Do you listen to iTunes while playing? Well if you do that is why you can still here the music play and continue to play after your compute freezes. There are multible things I found to help prolong the time before the game will freeze. Again this will only minimize the chance of the game freezing but it has helped me so much. 1) Don't run any background programs while playing like skype, xfire and stream. If you need them to run in the background make sure they are running in the background with no other windows are open. Also make sure nothing is maximazed windows while playing BW this tends to increase the chance of the game signifcantly 2) Try lowering your setting to 800x600 which also helps reduce the chance of the game freezing. Now if you don't need full screen and run through the iccup's launcher then you are able to run in windowed mode which will never freeze your game. Also if the minimized version is to small then you can press the 2x button in the top right of it however you need atleast 1080x1920 resolution or higher for that to display properly. I recommend run our system in 800x 600 mode and then run in windowed mode since this help first with streaming if your planning to and you can see the game much easier. I hope this helps since I am a Brood war fanatic and I have much experience trying to get this to run on my gaming rig WPWP.Fitz

As I do run windows 7 I do experience this major problem. After maybe 48 hours of research on the topic I finally found the origin of the problem. It has to do with windows explorer runs but Brood War changes something in windows explorer and this will cause your machine to freeze. Do you listen to iTunes while playing? Itunes, WMP, Winamp, doesn't matter, if it uses GDI for screen objects it has a chance of causing it. 2. Resolution doesn't help for crap, some games freeze worse than others (Starcraft is a full video subsystem hang, Starlancer can atleast be terminated by CADing to task manager. 3. 640x480 or 8bit colour modes don't help 4. Running without a driver..... don't even suggest something so dumb (for those who probably would....)

2. Ctrl+shift+esc to bring up task manager 3. Kill "explorer.exe" in the processes tab 4. Double-click starcraft in the Applications tab to bring it up 5. When done, exit SC, and go to file -> New Task in task manager, and type in "explorer.exe" to turn it back on.

enable all of the things when you right click the starcraft.exe (i did NOT enable compatibility mode, but i did every other box including run as admin) and disable color cycling which is in the in-game video options.

As above. Read the thread, realise your suggestions have been made already, and done nothing. I went through every non- file changing fix in the thread, and nothing helped. So I gave up and reinstalled. It works fine now, it only crashed once in about three hours, and I couldn't tell you why, but it hasn't happened again. I wasn't using any other applications, either (I love bw music, so that's what I listen too). The most confusing part was that I had logged on before, and it worked; it wasn't until I installed ICCUP (and thus 1.16.1) that it have me an issue. But then I reinstalled it with 1.16.1 to start and now it's fine. So I have no idea what the problem was, but try reinstalling it if you have the issue I did. I don't use ICCUP The same issue happens in almost all over DDraw titles Thus its not an installation issue.

If you go to program files/starcraft/broodwar, find broodwar.exe, and copy this as a shortcut file to your desktop. After this is done, right-click the shortcut, and select properties. Change the resolution to old school colour schemes and also select to run the game under a windows vista or windows XP service pack. Your broodwar game should work fine from here on in.
