Lecaf Oz Changes Name to Hwaseung Progame Team
From January 31st, Lecaf Oz is changing its name to Hwaseung Oz.
'Lecaf Oz' which was created by sponsoring the "Plus" gameteam back in March of 2006. Since then, it has become a reknowned game team by winning the Shinhan Bank Proleague (2nd half) in 2007 and the Grand Finals.
The name change occured because Lecaf wanted to increase its advertisement capacity and territory of influence. The idea is to improve Hwaseung image brand image in products from not only Lecaf but K Swiss, Murrel (not sure of the exact spelling) as well.
Hwaseung Inc.'s representative, Lee Gye Joo, has said "Through this name change, the Oz gameteam will become an even greater marketing communication channel for Hwaseung instead of Lecaf", and "I believe that the members of the team will be able to have more pride and loyalty to the team" and revealed the reason for the name change.
On the other hand, Hwaseung will have various fan events in light of the change in team name. First, on January 13st (Sat), they will give out custom-made cheering instruments for the fans that come to the Hero Center in Moon-Rae Dong. On the gameteam home page, fans will be able to interact with new sections, such as "Dart game", "How I became a Hwaseung Fan", and "Dinner with the players" to provide events to celebrate the name change.

+1, I am just happy that it looks like Hwaseung still values their pro-team sponsorship as an advertising tool. Oz's future looks pretty secure, all things considered.
I just read in the Economist that South Korea's economy shrunk by over 5% in 4Q2008...that's ridiculous. Hang tight, Korea!

I doubt anyone not fluent in korean would be able to pronounce the new name correctly.
They'll probably pronounce it Hway-sung, just like how they butcher Hwasin's ID.

Can you please let me know how to correctly pronounce both of these (Hwaseung, Hwasin)?
Edit: and note that you probably could have devoted your post to remedying these pronunciation problems, rather than just berating people for them.

Huh. Well I guess we can still call it Oz.

So if I understand this correctly, Hwaseung is the larger corporation that owns Lecaf, and they want to get the most bang for their buck by having their team promote the whole brand, not just Lecaf?
They need to get a catchier name though. Hwaseung Progame Team doesn't have any ring to it. I could get used to it if they just call themselves Hwaseung OZ.

hwasin is pronounced 'hwah-shin' hwaseung is pronounced 'hwah-sung' (like someone already mentioned, 'sung' isn't quite accurate but english doesn't have a better way of representing the actual sound)

Man, the old name sounder cooler but I guess business is business,
|
It's pronounced how it's spelled...just say it a couple of times...
"Hwa-seung"
or...
"Hua" then "seung"...soft s.
|
This'll be easy to remember, you'll all get used to it.
The transition from Hanbit Stars to Woongjin Stars took a day to remember.

so to pronounce seung you say something like straight except stop before the t and say ng instead that was probably unhelpful but okay

I pronounce it Woon-Jin, anybody else?

Lecaf definately sounded better, I think changing the name to a longer Korean name limits the global potential of advertisement (English names in Korea usually easier to remember and seems to alienate less people surprisingly, and Korean companies with English names can attract more international customers since its easier for them to say&remember)
just keep calling it Oz

But i'll try my best: Hwaseung: Hwah (add an H sound in front of a wah sound like that in water) -seung (gosh this one's hard. Just listen to korean commentators say the word starcraft (they pronounce it seu-tah-keu-. . .), take the 'seu' sound before the 'tah' sound, and attach an 'ng' to the end of it, ending with, tada, seung)
Hwasin: Hwah (same as above) -shin (just listen to a commentator say the name of the map with the word shin/sin in front of it (there are plenty--shin baekdu daegan(peaks of baekdu), sin chupung-ryeong, just to name a few at the top of my head))
Hope that was clear enough to understand

hwa from "hwa ee ting / fighting" (1 2 3 skt1 hwa ee ting!) then soong, hwa soong
the "soong" is pronounced with your mouth straight horizontally, teeth closed/together, instead of making an "o" shape with the mouth smile, makes it easier :D

Hwa-Se-ung Hwa is pronounced as that of (Hwa)sin Se is pronouned as that of (Se)oul Ung is pronounced as that of Sam(Sung) it should be something like Who-Ar-Song i think?
|
OOOOOOAHZUNG
seriously though ... Lee Jaedong Oz.
|
Most English guides I've read use the vowel sound in "brook" for the Korean vowel "ㅡ" (eu) in "승".
So, similar to the double-o in words like "look" or "book," but the "r" before it brings it closer to a mix with an "ee" sound by placing it farther back on the tongue. I've also seen it described as just this: a mix between a normal English "oo" and "ee" sound. Can anyone think of a better English word for it?
|
Lecaf was way better, but i understand the thinking about this.

All twelve progaming teams except Ace should split into their own cities with their own stadiums, that would be so cool.
Like SK Seoul T1? :O KTF Busan MagicNs?

Good they kept the old logo.

Too bad, Lecaf OZ sounded so much better, i don't even think i can pronounce the new name

No, it isn't. I have already heard caf being used as a short for café (coffee), but is very uncommon. So le caf (in two words) could mean the coffee, but seriously, you will never hear it, let alone read it. Otherwise, this is great news for Oz. More money means better working/living conditions, which means better results, which means Hwaseung will destroy everyone again in 2009
On a side note, could the 3rd brand mentionned in the OP be Merrell? They make great quality outdoor sportwear. Their hiking shoes are among the best.

Yes there sure is ^^

K-Swiss was a Korean company? I was confident that it was... Swiss... I guess this will stick eventually but not immediately. I mean it took so long to change from Hanbit Stars and Lecaf Oz is an even more household name than Hanbit.

Lecaf is favorite sports brand in Korea, but most korean don't know Hwaseung.. (company name)

I am definitely going to mess up and keep calling them Lecaf OZ - Hwaseung is annoying to pronounce. I like their remodeled jackets though.
