Nothing to do but restart, sometimes re-making the lobby or have someone else make it. It seems very random. For me it goes "checking password" or "joining game" gets stuck and crashes. Or go to shield battery

They clearly didn't think about how many maps users might have, because it's definitely not reasonable to spend 20+ seconds scanning maps to avoid a 0.5 second download. The crash is likely a bug in their implementation of this. Why they chose to try to implement this *now* (and do so without even telling us they did it), I have no idea.

Originally we assumed this meant deduping the maps *on their servers* but the actual change seems to have been that it tries extremely hard to not duplicate maps on your machine by downloading them. That is, whenever it would download a map, it scans and processes all the maps in your map folders first. That seems so strange, out of all things to do they implement this out of nowhere... and can't even do a decent job. I swear there's some intern sitting there and testing out his skills via patches for this game lol.

How did this previously work? Did they only check the Download folder in the maps folder for duplicates? But even then I feel like I didn't need to download maps from tournament map packs I had, for example.

What happens if you just wait? How did this previously work? Did they only check the Download folder in the maps folder for duplicates? But even then I feel like I didn't need to download maps from tournament map packs I had, for example. AFAIK the way it previously worked was that if it found a map with the same filename that matched the content, it'd use it, otherwise it would download it again (and I *think* this check was limited to maps inside your download folder). Clearing your map folder out would likely "fix" this issue, at the cost of extreme inconvenience. I'd definitely prefer that Blizzard not try to make these type of changes if they're not gonna do it well, don't see why someone came along and thought this was a necessary thing to do after 25 years of it being the other way. (But yes, ShieldBattery is not affected by this change)

What to do then? move all your replays to a folder outside of starcraft. the issue lies in the system also scanning all your replay files. if you have a lot of them (example: i have around 20gb) the game will crash.
