I guess this doesn't affect us as much given they probably would've never done anymore Broodwar content anyway, but this is still a huge kick.
OGN and their broadcasts got me into Broodwar. The first game of BW I ever saw was the Incruit OSL finals and all of their proleague matches they showed were all amazing.
Everything I do now with BW was directly inspired by OGN and MBC's work on Proleague. I watched I believe every single proleague match from 2009-2011. Amazing production and did so much to support the game we all love.
Whats going on guys? I mean esports is doing great,LoL is huge in korea, as well as other sports. Is Afreeca really outcompeting OGN for these events? I mean if i had the chance to watch gaming on TV i would go for it for sure, instead of watching it through a video stream online.
I agree they wouldn't actually delete their footage, however would they release it to the public? I heard MBCGame has released their archived footage eventually, but I can't seem to find it.

I'd be even more interested in releasing archived replays.

It seemed inevitable once Blizzard and Riot took their esports in house, but it's still shocking to see a once-titan fall like this. Adapt or die applied to everyone, I guess.

I thought OGN lost broadcast rights to LCK last year?

yes, once Overwatch and League of Legends became in-house productions by their respective owners, OGN had no more must-see content. They made a big PUBG push during the height of its popularity, but it never took off as a spectator sport (and now the playerbase has fallen considerably as well).
If memory serves didn't K.H.J. mention something a couple years back about OGN having difficulties? That they had been forced out of LCK and only had PUBG and a couple minor esports left available to them?
I suppose CJ Group doesn't see a future in OGN anymore. Not that surprising really considering no BW, no LCK, and no Overwatch League.
this sucks very first broadcast a friend showed me was the Iris vs savior match back in 2006 were i had 0 idea what was going on but that match was amazing and same with the final that followed and followed Starcraft ever since. But much like what Wax and others had said Blizzard and Riot moving their games to in-house killed them :/
Inevitable considering the situation, but still pretty sad. OGN always had great production and the matches were great too. It was also pretty cool that they helped out with SSL10/11 back in 2014/15 during the Sonic era, essentially reviving OSL even if for a short period of time: SSL and "OSL revived, Dream Realized"
The 2008 OSL finals was the first match of pro starcraft I watched live, and I was instantly hooked. Watched as much of every BW starleague I could after that. Sad to see this part of brood war history finally winding down -- I hope people have been proactive about archiving all their matches/broadcasts so we can continue to enjoy them in the future.
sad but not surprising... no audiences for months... big devs producing broadcasts on their own... Kart Rider & Darts & a decline in PUBG can't save that...
oh, just yet another minor esports organization falling... wait a second OGN ?? OGN marks a end of an era without a doubt, it was instrumental to grow Esports.

A lot of the production staff that made a lot of the marquee esports programs at OGN jumped ship some time ago to those in house production arms.
Frankly I'm not surprised by this news. As Waxangel said, the major modern titles do their own production or outsource to Afreeca/SPOTV. OGN had a slim chance of surviving by picking up the rights to do the Nexon Kartrider League earlier this year but clearly wasn't enough to keep them afloat.
Incredibly sad but not super surprising. I'd heard they were scaling back a ton of their operations in the last year or so, including cancelling a lot of projects they'd only recently invested heavily in, so this doesn't come as a shock to me. But it still stings.
Dang, they had a good run, and lasted almost 8 years longer than MBCGame. It sucks that they got shafted in this era of accessible online streaming and developer-run eSports leagues. I wonder what will happen to their studio and other leftover assets.
I read some really detailed comments last year how OGN was losing foothold but this is way too sad to conceive. Even last year I was wondering if maybe we could have another joint OSL with the round robin format and the booth and the grey chairs even if they are empty and all that.
I'm lucky enough to have been able to have visited their studio and will always remember how much this seemingly random little channel gave me. Probably can only compare it to VH1 all in all
God damn this hurts to see. So many memories of staying up all night watching OSL at the turn of the last decade. I hope they release all the match replays and VODs somewhere
just recorded a 30 minute long video discussing how OGN became OGN and why the channel eventually decided to close maybe watch sped-up because its just me rambling for the most part
This is sad news, OGN was as for many other the first tournaments I followed back in the days, really sad to see them go even if they are not focusing on Brodowar.
I used to watch this channel ten years ago, watching BW live from OGN. gonna miss those days, those were the golden age of this game.. never forget ogn and mbc
I haven't watched OGN since BW but still sad to see. OSL were the greatest tournaments there have ever been, insane production value and quality. For a few years from 2006 I watched every single game including qualifications and the proleague. The news about Blizzard and SC2 killing BW got me so depressed I couldn't even watch the last real OSL in 2011 with JangBi and Fantasy. Maybe it's finally time to look up the finals

I remember using one of them super secret URLs TL posted to watch a direct OGN stream on VLC to catch Proleague from school. That semester was pretty lame, so I'm grateful it helped me get through it. It was that FPL9 season I think where I nearly won lol.
I would leave the stream on in the background when matches weren't playing and it never failed to amaze me what kind of variety shows Korea could come up with for Starcraft. There was plenty of dedicated Starcraft content at that time.
When I saw this thread I knew I had to post in it. Seemed inevitable with the popularity of streaming, but still very sad nonetheless

last BW OSL was in 2012
and yes, it was a real OSL
Oh yeah I meant 2012 then, feels like it's been longer than that lol.

Well they did make back to back finals, easy mistake imo.
fuck man. ogn produced quality content. what a blow.
Yes from a business standpoint I understand why game companies did it in house. But OGN set a freaking gold standard. Nothing can replace what the Korean producers in BW did .

Oh yeah for sure, I've spent all these years since dreaming of those OSL OPs to return. Of course, the closest that came to reality were the SSL ones, which were of course, broadcasted by OGN.
The channel may be gone, but the 5am 240p restreams will live forever in everyone's memory. Hopefully everything gets released and archived, but i feel like that may be wishful thinking with how copyrights work. S1 Korean Air Flash vs Effort is still one of the best events I've ever seen.

riot officially my least favourite game company now. they took ogn's last big title only to do a massively shit job themselves. goodbye ogn; most koreans still dreamt that riot would give you back the broadcasting rights.
It's a shame it happened this way. Blizzard finally stepped back from starcraft broadcasting, and now the premier esports broadcasting entity in Korea is folding.
Maybe I'm gonna sound like a dick but I'm still mad that they all those years never tried to make an OSL - couple tiny events that I can count with my fingers is what they achieved. So I'm gonna say that's what you deserve for betraying the legend game which made esports on Korea into a thing. BoxeR vs. YellOW, Bisu vs. Savior and FantaSy vs. Jangbi those were times...

Yeah like most people here, I remember watching live stream of OSL in 2005+, that was majestic. Sad to see it goes but it has not been relevant for like 8 years. I got pretty sad when MBC disappeared also. The page has really turned now. The present is still great, but the massive scale of what it used to be is still leaving a void in my heart.
And hmmmmmmm, related to that, there was a video on the theme of Happy Ending by Mika showing all the OSL champions (Well up until the first Jaedong I think).... well I can't find it anymore. I thought it was on Violetak youtube (which I was sure was banned) but it's not. Well if anyone still have it somewhere, I'm interested for the nostalgia factor.

In terms of production understanding and enhancing value and entertainment there were some mad geniuses at OGN. I think it hasn't been surpassed since and since every in-house production I see nowadays was Dead Serious (tm) w/ dark colors, edges and corners and whatnot I think it never will be.
There was an OGN OSL torrent pack here couple years ago, is that still online? Might buy an external HDD just in case their archive vanishes too.

Admittedly I follow BW so sparsely these days that I only just saw this.
RIP OGN. Was some great years of watching professional BW. At this point, given that the pro scene is little more than a distant memory, it feels like little more than confirmation of something that has long been clear. It's a shame they couldn't find their place in the post-BW world, though.
Tanks for the memories. BW was never the same after it stopped being on TV. It was so cool telling my friends how they play SC on TV in Korea lol. And just the sheer amount of pro matches there used to be, it was actually too much to watch all of them, but it was always there played at the highest level when you wanted it. Who would have kept playing this game if it weren't on TV. First and last organic esport and competitive video game. Very unique time in terms of SC kinda being the only game in town, the internet being just good enough to share videos of it to all of us outside Korea, and being a kid with all the time in the world to get obsessed with it.
I feel like the first intro i ever watched was one of the years it had Iloveoov sitting in a chair with everyone around him or something, cannot remember the year. will never forget staying up all night while in school watching starcraft, rip.

These guys sure were ahead of their time with their awesome opening vids. Sad to see them go, even though I haven't seen any OGN content for ages and they quit BW stuff. Thanks for all the great memories I guess :{

I assume you're thinking of MedryBW which unfortunately seems to be gone.
I also vaguely remember someone passing around a torrent containing a very large archive of old VODs. If anyone knows where that is, it'd be great to find.

As already referenced by Jealous before, here it is for the sake of convencience:
Also, only semi-related: It's videos like those which got me into trying myself on a ~8h montage of my own — most of it is OGN/OSL content (as opposed to MSL content), lots of bad cuts and unrelated music, never got to upload the final 2 parts because the back-then copyright algorithm auto-blocked the EVER OSL 2004 content in my videos:
Who cares? It's not OSL hosting OGN anymore, they didn't make any BW related event after last OSL (exclude SBENU SSL was sponsored by Sonic so OGN only went for it for extra cash).
