In any case, if this is Broodwar's last hurrah in the spotlight, it was quite a run wasn't it?

How many players/accounts play on it total? How many are online at peak times, etc. IIRC the last ASL had like 500 people trying to qualify for it, that's pretty huge imo.

There's no team league in which rookies and amateurs can foster themselves in. Thats the main issue that is a roadblock for BW resurgence

Wasn't ASL the only big offline tournement this year?

But having 500 people who are motivated to try to qualify is pretty nice. If they see that there is actually something to train for that might be good enough atm. Fish server could be good enough to get somewhat competitive? Maybe? At least if some ex pros are willing to "coach" them a bit or play mass games, etc

I don't think that's anythingnew. I think a full resurgence is impossible but I think we can have a good scene. As much as we point to stream numbers and pc bang numbers, ultimately there's not really enough tournament support. Hopefully if HD Starcraft happens, Blizzard will start supporting more events, or at the very least, the hype will get these organizers will open up their wallets.

Without true PL its all just a wishfull thinking. With amatour tournaments only we can expect progresive fall of BW into obscurity - becouse of no new blood, becouse of decreasing skill, becouse of old PGs leaving gaming.

Football isn't only popular because its a good game. I hate playing football myself, I was never any good and didn't want to improve. Football is popular because it's everywhere - you learn it at primary and high school, involuntarily. Because its a sport you grew up with, you go on and watch it in the pub, when you are out with your mates, or with your dad or son. A lot of the popularity has to be attributed to the game, of course, but a lot of it has to do with football just "being there". The same way in US they have their football/rugby, and EU has soccer/football. Different sports being popular, for no apparent reasons. I say lets wait another 5-15 years, for our kids to grow up a bit more, and introduce them to BW. Get them to play the game with their friends. Explain the game to them, coach them, watch a high level game from your favourite player in his prime. Make BW immortal but branding it not an eSport, but a Sport, and pass it to new generation.
