Hi guys I know I'm not one to post often but I thought this topic was fairly relevant considering the many changes in hardware in the last 10 years or so. I'm hoping others can share their experiences for those who have been using mice from the Pro-Brood-War days and have had trouble finding new mice to upgrade to since.

In the last 10 years the common place mouse for BW was easy to come across considering the games that were released and the complexity required for the games; but recently I have noticed we have been slammed with the same shaped mice that are generally palm grip and are ridiculously big for most RTS games, on top of that the need for high dpi and macro keys all over the place has dominated.

Chronologically the top used RTS mice from what I have gathered were.
-Logitech Mini Optical (2000-2009)
-KTEC KTM-9500 (2005-2009)
-Logitech G1 (2005-2014)
-Zowie Mico (2011-2015)
-Logitech g9/g9x (2011-2014)
-Razor Abyssus Mirror 2010 (2010-2013)

I'm wondering to see what other people are using considering how hard it is to find the same shape as the above mice now.
The only mice I have found to perform similarly and that have good BW mice traits are the CM Storm Spawn, and Xornet II, as well as the Razor Abyssus however the new shape seems to have ruined it.

(I do have some bias to confess though as I am guessing most other people are I am a claw gripper so I'm not interested in mice that are long and/or have that wedge at the back.)

Thoughts?

I use steelseries sensei I think it's great, haven't necessarily tried a lot of other mice though I suspect some cheaper mice can be just as good.

It's simple lightweight durable accurate fast and expansive. ^^

You should also add famous korean mouse KTEC KTM-9500 Progamer to list. I don't know timeline of usage but must be 2005(06)-2010.

I'm using Logitech G100S because it's closer to LMO but still not that tiny. Also I'm still in love with my back to 2006 400 DPI Microsoft Basic Optical 1.0a.

I'm huge fan of mice that doesn't require drivers and simply got button for changing DPI. Flash uses Zowie Mico blue, it supports 400 DPI.

Also edit your post: It's 2014 ver. which ruined shape not 2013 (also called mirror edition which Jaedong used).

I'm using a logitech M105, very cheap and without any issues during the past 2 years.

I made some updates thanks for the feedback!

The Zowie Mico would have been a really nice mouse to keep in production but they stopped it which was disappointing. I felt like they stopped it very soon after they made it or maybe I just missed the boat. I remember Monoprice re-badging them and selling them fairly cheap but then that stopped last year.

I used the M100 which was kind of similar but the sensor was really shitty so I recycled it at work.

G100s.. didn't want to spend too much money as many of my fiends invested in trendy super expensive mouses and were disappointed. Very happy about my choice.

There were a lot of posts like this one here.
Nobody from BW pros used fancy mouses and you don't need any of that. You can become a good player with the cheapest mouse possible. Take the one you're most comfortable with. I would just go with **Logitech**, always good quality for reasonable money.

I am using the same Logitech G3 for over 10 years already and it's the best mouse I have ever used.
I also like it more than the G1 because of the two extra side buttons, I don't want to live without sidebuttons anymore. Sadly you can't buy it anymore
I feel like the left mouse button is breaking down slowly and if it really happens for good I gonna buy the internal button components and try to fix it on my own.

As a replacement I might get a Logitech G303 though, looks decent enough. I absolutely hate Razer mice, and they also seem to break frequently from what my brothers and friends told me.

Very good for BW:
- Logitech B58 (hard to find)
- Logitech Mini Optical (hard to find)
- Monoprice Mico (available online, new name) = Zowie Mico (hard to find, old name)

Bad for BW:
- Razer Abyssus
- Usually very large and/or high DPI mice

edit: Logitech G1 (hard to find) was also very good.

as long as the sensor isn't shit, one that you feel comfortable is the best one. i'm using Logitech g303 at 1600 dpi. I can't seem to play BW with low dpi.

Funny enough I found a Logitech mini optical/g1 looking mouse on amazon with omron switches no mention of the laser/optical which looks really nice but looks dodgy as hell at the same time.

I have CM Storm Spawn that I bought back in 2014, when my Zowie Mico died after using it for a year.
Like others that are listed above, Spawn is pretty small. Although the design/shape can be reluctant to buy at first, but once you get used to it, it gets pretty comfy. I've been using it for almost 2 years, and haven't had any problems.

I was going to add one more to my storage, Xornett, since they made a ton of price increase on Spawn, but then wanted to try out something new. I was looking into Razor Abyssus, but wasn't really sure if that would work well with SC, since I remembered buying one of the Steelseries's product and really just returned within a day. Seems like Steelseries/Razor are similar to each other, but maybe I'm being biased here.

Any suggestion on getting a mouse for casual SC?

It's called now Logitech RX250, I bought it year ago, should be available. Good mouse but a liiitle bit bigger than G100S, and I don't like left-right push of scroll button option, it looks like its shaking.

I wonder what will most of pros do when their mouse break? Flash must be storing 50 of Zowie Mico in his storage depot. I really like KT Edition of Zowie Mico, looks so cool.

Bisu is using Commatech M1 (also called FK mini?) football version. But don't blame if it's LMO football (which I think is pretty rare and outdated).

Deathadder looks like reminiscent/modern clone of Microsoft Intellimouse, they copied it 100%. IIRC Intellimouse was most popular among FPS gamers so they made a mistake when saying it's for RTS, it's fucking large.

Actually the best mouse I have ever had to this day is the KTEC mouse I ordered from South Korea, this mouse was very popular way back in the day like 99-2000' time, it is very simple / nice size / extremely accurate, and it is a bad ass mouse from South Korea that says "Pro Gamer" on it, what else could you ask for.

Oh and it is made / perfect for RTS, please believe. Only problem is that I now cannot seem to locate it on amazon / ebay or newegg..... damn.

By no means was I indicating that having the best mouse will make you a better player, its more about something that is comfortable to play with and reliable. Most mice are either too big or cant handle the quick motions required for RTS games.

I bought Logitech g9/g9x after I saw Flash using it many years ago. Biased I know, but my old mouse was actually defect.

Here is my personal opinion:

Pros;
- the housing is very very durable, no ugly visible wear after 5+ years of extensive use, unlike my previous logitech Click
- it is programmable
- the way it fits my hand, however it did feel slightly weird after just switching from my old mouse
- free spinning scroll wheel
- full black makes it look really bad ass
- God dominated with it

Cons;
- overpriced as fuck
- it doesn't work well without a mousepad or very smooth surface. I actually sanded and polished my table surface because I'm a cheapskate.
- the cord is reinforced with woven plastic which makes it way more durable, but also makes it very stiff
- it's difficult to clean thoroughly
- annoying, but very quite idle hum. (wasn't like that when I bought it, so probably a worn bearing)
- useless weights and larger body kit

I would only buy it again if it came without the reinforced cord and if it were cheaper.

Its sad to see reguluar computer equipment being overexpensive as fuck these days. If it has the label of Gaming Equipment it instantly increases in price with 30-40 dollars. Such scams.

I personally use logitech G303.
But to be honest, if the mouse does not suck, its mostly just getting use to it.

My only rule is that it has to be light, otherway I get too much inertia and the compensation of it becomes a problem.

I was used to playing with Logitech RX250 and was mostly thinking that I was comfortable with it due to being more precise and fast when selecting and moving units. As I switched to Razer Mamba (which I switched to to minimize my SC:BW gaming activity as I was super imprecise with it), I realised that in reality Logitech RX250 was a tiring mouse to use for me. With some years of the occasional UMS games I became used to the Razer Mamba and alike mouses (newer versions of Razer Deathadder) and am significantly faster and precise with it then before and am not getting tired fast.
Enjoy the game

Honestly, it's all about comfort, man. I was using some 10 year old mouse for the past 10 years and it was excellent. Recently, and unfortunately (or what I thought), it met its timely death - I did upgrade my self just a month ago.

I was actually considering many of the same ones you've listed in your OP. However, I actually decided to go with the Razer DeathAdder Chroma. I like it a lot, you can adjust the DPI, and it's super comfortable. Typically, when switching to a new mouse, it could take weeks to readjust. It only took me a few days and I like it more than the one I had for 10 years now.

Comfort is key. Good luck and I do advise you to check into the DeathAdder .

Why do they keep discountinuing the best type of mice imo for rts games? Logitech mini, zowie mico, logitech g1, logitech g9...
And they keep making these huge mouses that are only good for fps. I like my steelseries rival when im playing cs, but i feel its too slow for sc.

I stuck with deathadder now and its huge for rts yea but good enough for dia1

Also yeah G pro is 70 euros, but some people will ask 70 euros for zowie mico which is covering dust on their shelves

Wow that new Logitech looks amazing! Doesn't look like it ships to many countries though, don't feel like paying top dollar for it on amazon considering it would be replacing my $20 G1

Go for a zowie or razer product. They produce some of the 0 acceleration mice. (that means to unintended movements)

I used to use a mini optical when i ONLY played BW, i later switched to a G1. After i started playing SC2 i had to switch mice, long story short after like 10-15 mice i now use a Zowie FK2, performance-wise it's the best mouse i've ever owned (and comfort-wise.. but that varies with each person). Logic G Pro is another good choice if you're looking for the best small/high performance mouse on the market. I also like the FK2 because it has no drivers, all the settings are on-board. I use 1000 hz for every game and the dpi settings are 400 (i use this for BW), 800 (Overwatch, SC2 and every other game), 1600 and 3200.

In general sensor and comfort are the 2 most important things when youre shopping for a mouse (weight/buttons are secondary). If you plan on playing other games invest in a quality mouse, if youre only gonna play BW then just get something thats comfy and cost efficient.

I bought 2 logitech mini recently, one of them new (M-UV55A) and both have faulty sensors. They both have this problem : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/general/83100-logitech-mini-optical-problem

I dont know if that happens to a lot of people, but maybe the sensor is old and starts to not work properly after 10 years or so, these mice were made in 2002.

I've used Logitec g100s, good shape but i feel left click is not comfortable and the cable is bad.
Now I'm using g302 and it's best mice I've used (my g100s, Razer Abyssus 2014 ...). I set 640 dpi(window 6/11) for playing bw.

I really wanna try Logitec G pro, I think its shape is so good, and solved the problems on G100s. But the price seems too high.

Which sensor is in your logitech mini? I've heard this is a mouse with three different sensors, S2599, S5008 and h2000 (not suitable for games).

For this mouse advise black rag mouse pad (eg STEELSERIES QcK). Sens in windows at 6. Problems in sc bw should not be.

I am currently using Logitech G402. I haven't even considered mouse being an issue since playing BW again. I have no problem feeling accurate and my muta control is better than it ever was from my hard practice in SC2. (I played BW for 12 years before SC2 but I never practiced as hard as I did in SC2.. hope it carries over)

I really miss the Logitech MX310. Back in the day a lot of pros used either that or MX300, can't quite remember.

The KTEC mouses were always super highly esteemed as well. Probably not in production anymore, sadly.

What would be a good current updated new mouse to use for Brood War mainly? I had recently purchased a new Razer DeathAdder 2013 mouse but it jumps across the screen every few minutes or so. What would be the best way to clean the optical lense or to fix the jumpiness? I tried changing it to every different port. I also have a BlackWeb mouse mat, could that be the reason since it's a Razer mouse? I'm thinking of just going with the slightly cheaper Black Web gaming mouse and see if it is any or less jumpy than the DeathAdder. I really like the feel of the DeathAdder with my hand on it but for some reason Synapse makes the pointer jump and I think it may have corrupted my volume to my lab top and the touchscreen capabilities.

I had the 1st version of DA for 11 years , although the middle button died after 9 years it was perfect for me.Recently I've bought DA Elite , It's way lighter than the 1st one so I had to get used to it.I've never had any problems with "jumps" at all.Have You tried any other mouse pad ? Or to not use it at all ? I've not been using a mouse pad for the majority of my gaming and with DA i had been getting very good results .I have Synapse as well but I doubt that the APP would create problem like that.Maybe Your mouse have some factory flaws ? Try it on another PC/Laptop to see the result
I've bought Razer Sphex V2 and I must admit It's wonderful and it's price is not high (In case if it's mats fault )

Amen.

I've had my abyssus for upwards of 6 years, and it's been the best RTS mouse that I've ever had.

Although I use 450 DPI w/ no mouse accel. Habits from playing FPS. It evens out by the resolution of broodwar being blown up and making the sens higher. When remastered comes out I'll have to figure out some sort of ratio with my native res and the res SCBW usually used.

I recently finally found the perfect mouse: Razer Deathadder Elite (for big hands). The rubber grip on the sides of the mouse feels really good.
Combined with my new keyboard, a Corsair K70 Lux RGB Cherry MX Red, I shit you not I went from ~190 to ~240 apm.

Yea the new logitech pro mouse looks amazing.

Stay away from laser mice, they are inaccurate.

New BW:R goes off your native resolution with mouse speed so 400 DPI seems a bit low now if your playing with 1920 X 1080

I've got 2 logitech mini opticals that I don't use anymore.

There is a doc from a reddit thread about lightest gaming mice and the DPI's.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MouseReview/comments/3jrsnn/lightest_possible_gaming_mouse_with_reasonable/

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZzbKDmFOqsP_ut2RdctD01OEbZzbXol6HLwqVkSmZcg/edit#gid=0

Honestly I would just get what scan suggested though. Higher DPI version of the old mini optical basically.

Don't buy Logitech unless you're prepared to replace it in a couple of years. At least the MX518/G400-series has a cord problem.

Think i replaced at least two MX518 and one G400 by now. It's not like it totally breaks down, but it starts to intermittently disconnect (you hear the windows connected-mouse-sound sound) and it tends to be during the most important moments. I mainly played QuakeWorld too, would imagine BW working the mouse even harder.

Ive used a lot of mice in the past, but to be honest, the most important part was always getting used to it.

Ive used big and small mice and while I favor small mice, I loved most of the mice I used.

Currently using a G203 from logitech and thinking of buying 10 of them to have spares. last time i felt this storng aobut a mice it was the G3, and I had 4 of them. They are all gone now.

Agreed, the G203 is really nice. I think I might buy more and mod them to cut weight. My wrist is starting to feel slightly creaky already and this is day 3. The side buttons+assembly can come out along with many screws and you can cut off a lot of the upper shell inner cask and just glue together what needs to stay in place. They also used really heavy and thick plastic in this thing. If you want to get fiendish about it you can sand down everything and make it even lighter that way.

The G403 is a pretty big ergo and it weighs 87.3g to the g203s 85, LOL.

There's also just using a fast mousepad and custom mousefeet to reduce wrist strain when using the mouse. I might go back to a hard pad or at least a fast thinnish/firm cloth pad. Funnily, Logitech makes a really good 3mm pretty fast big cloth pad.

WIth minor effort, you can get the G900/903 down to 92.6g simply by removing the battery. That's amusing to me because it's chock full of componentry and it has an amazing m1/m2 button system from a technical standpoint. With a little more effort, you can get it to like 90 I think - but then you just have a mouse that's inferior to the DM1 Pro S in every respect except for the buttons.

A fast thick cloth pad helps a ton with the G203. Bought a cougar speed 2 to replace a control 2 pad and it's much better with this mouse. I thought I would like a 3mm pad but having used a 5mm pad for awhile I think 5mm is best. The speed 2 and control 2 are both 5mm and very inexpensive and good.

there is no "perfect rts mouse", it all depends on your grip and hand size.

1) find a mouse shape that you like (size etc.), something that fits your grip

2) out of all the mice that fit your criteria pick 1 that is lightweight and has a good sensor (you have to do some research here)

If you wanna be budget friendly just pick a mouse that fits your grip, is lightweight and budget friendly. Having a super high end sensor isnt a big deal in RTS games. I went through about ~10 mice before i found 1 that i liked (zowie fk2).

Worth the wait. It's my current mouse, it's a gorgeous and lightweight little beast, and when this one dies I will buy another G403 until they are no longer available.

I have really small hands and I go with TeamScorpion Zealot. Very small, a bit smaller but slightly more height than Logitech Mini Optical. It has drivers but setting is done onboard so once you set it up, the mouse carries the config. I bought in 2014 and still goes strong. It is no longer available though.

Abyssus 3500 was good but I prefer 600 or 800 dpi so the 450/1800/3500 dpi setting felt awkward.

Once mt Zealot dies then replacement would be G Pro(?) Zowie Mico died too soon for me (just after nine months!) but it was one of the best I uses

Logitech G102/G203 is the replacement for the G100s and it is basically a G-Pro and performs as well as one. You can find the G102 (chinese version) for sale on ebay for around 20-30 dollars. Best price/performance mouse on the market as far as I know and a great mouse for starcraft.

I use this
[image loading]
Steelseries Rival
It's great, I had a Steelseries Sensei which is nearly the same but with laser sensor, it was getting old so I got the Rival in replacement (cheaper) and it ends up having a better grip too, perfect for me (this is 40€). This brand makes simple but high quality stuff, so the buttons have a rly good click like the switches are light and come back quickly to "unclicked" the weight is great nothing superfluous in general. They also adverstise that their devices have great longevity, idk how true it is or not but I kept the Sensei for what, 4 years?

Anything by logitech is absolutely amazing and they last FOREVER.

Ive had 2 razor mice and they have broke within a 5 month period. They also feel so plasticy and weak that you can't help but to assume it's going to break very soon and sure enough they do.

Ive also had multiple crappy 10 dollar wal-mart mouse last longer than my razor mouses lolz which is pretty sad to experience.\

Edit: Also, go by something that is perfect for your size of hands. Going by a specific mouse that somebody found success with isn't the best idea. Think the best thing is to find a durable mouse first of all then review them individually to see how well they would fit inside your hand.

I find it to be very difficult to control the mouse accurately when its so much larger than my hands can comfortably cup it. And accuracy in starcraft is to important to ignore the details of each mouse you plan on purchasing. I would only say this for RTS games.

I have enough Logitech Mini Opticals for the rest of my life. Ever. Like, 6, including one in-box. :D Best for BW.
Otherwise, get Wireless Thinkpad Keyboards (with red trackpoint in the middle, the 'productivity' and 'ergonomics' equivalent of PC > Console), attach a guitar-strap, and you get a keytar keyboard with inbuilt mouse (pointer) you can stand up and walk around with = perfect for hyper ADD ppl.

If you want a mouse with a reliable middle click, don't bother with the G402. I bought it to replace my 10+ year old MX518 and the middle click requires an impressive amount of down force to respond.

Same here.
I haven't used any other mouse for close to 10 years now I think.

Best mouse ever
I'm only on my second Abyssus now as well - so no idea what the complaint about it breaking quickly is about.
this even includes a lot of travelling (I'm born in Germany, but live in the UK - with family and friends still living in Germany).

My brothers.

Edit: Oh ya I should probably make a real comment. I've also been using my Abyssus for about 6yrs and the only replacement I can find that isnt a Zowie/Monoprice Mico is the Abyssus V2 or the Logitech g102. Leaning towards the g102 because build quality and Abyssus V2 doesn't work without Synapse running(deal breaker imo)

i used MX300 for many years, then when they were out of sales, i switched to G1, then to G100.
These are more-or-less the same mice.
However i must admit my G100 started to glitch (short disconnects) after maybe 2 years of use.
I switched to G403 (got is as a present) and while the form needed some getting used to, i find me being quite accurate with it these days. Definitely recommend.

I recomend G203 (known as G102 in US?) its new generation of G100s, same design as G Pro, with cost like 30€.

For the 93847534735 th thread about "what mouse to choose" I suggest a "compromise" to a logitech mini

Logitech M105, I was afraid after 15 years to replace my logitech classic optical mouse and never adapt... I have no regret. I am 100% happy with this one. It has 2 buttons (awesome) and one wheel (so you can scroll down on your favorite browser, awesome too)

But it is as usual, old school player will tell you to buy the 5 euros ones and the new players (less intelligent players) will tell you to buy those new crappy shitty 100 euros razerblade stuff with 10094420 useless buttons changing colors when you are afk.

Not sure if this is a unique opinion or not, but it doesn`t matter that much, that you think it does (with what mouse you play). At least this was my experience.

I think its like 99% is the player, becouse knowledge is most important in this game but.. BUT... good equipment makes this game 100 x more comfortable, when u are not going to frustrate becouse coursor shakes or not registered keys etc etc etc. Most 1-5$ hardware is shit, but its not like u need to spend 123123$ for good quality equipment, like 25$ mouse / 25$ keyboards are mostly very good. Of course we can spend more for a bit better hardware but it will be not anymore cost-effective as much as changing from 2$ mouse to some like g203 (quality) mouse.

its slightly bigger than G1/G100, but not extremely big
it has the same settings in DPI and sensitivity
it curves a little which is better for the wrist
very nice rubber cover on the sides
good long and flexible cable
+ you get a detachable weight to make it lighter/heavier
and (my very personal best) you don't have 123213 buttons on it.
Overall i noticed my accuracy increased. But yeah, i've been using exclusively logitech mice for bw since 2001.

@endinglife remember that good DPI settings depends of screen resolution u cant use same dpi on differen resolution becouse outcome effect will be different for you. So if u asking about dpi settings you should also ask about resolution.

I've been trying many mouses in the past few months and they all ended up having a critical flaw that forced me to search for a new one.

- BenQ ZOWIE EC1-A, material making my fingers sweat
- RAZER DeathAdder Elite, wheel making a squeak sound
- SteelSeries Rival 300, not sure why I didn't like it probably just the shape and the side grip was annoying
- Logitech G403, the clicking didn't feel good, not clean

In the ForeignBW Discord several people recommended me the Logitech G203 .
I was skeptical because I have big hands but now that I have been using it for about 2 months I have to say this mouse is awesome, everything about it feels great.

I would recommend the Deltaco MS-779.
There are no annoying blinking lights, no hard to use scroller that keeps getting stuck or accidentally being pressed and
if you're in a dusty environment it won't break down.
Have sweaty palms? No reason to be afraid of electrocution anymore, this baby is waterproof.
- IP68-certified
- 800 DPI
- Very ergonomic

Ahh I don't think you can get KTECs anymore, I tried buying one a few months ago and couldn't find any. Bought 2 of them 3 years ago and they've been way more comfortable than any kind of Razer mice I've used in the past. Trying to hold off unboxing my last piece for as long as I can.

The truth is, one person's opinion on a good mouse could mean the worst for someone else.

You have to trial and error find one for your comforts.

I use the Razer DeathAdder ... I love it. But would I say it's the best? For me.

Is it for you? Who knows. You also need slightly larger hands to accommodate. Go test a few at a store like Best Buy where they put them on display (assuming you're American ... if not, find some European equivalent store?)

EDIT: Just saw you're from Australia. Do they have any sort of PC/hardware store there? I would think so. You can at least put your hand on the mouse and emulate some clicking etc.

Based on your mouse history, you prefer symmetrical smaller mice. I'd reccommend you the Logitec G203 Prodigy, it's the successor of the Optical Mini in a way.

currently in Thailand and the stuff they have here is pretty limited unless I go to Bangkok. Yeah you are right, it will be different from person to person. But I would still like to hear if anyone tried out this mouse since the zowie mico was so popular among pros. this is supposedly one of the successors.

yup, currently using a logitech G1. it was good but now I am having problems with it. Sometimes my clicks do not register or it thinks I am double clicking in BW. hoping a different mouse will fix that.

I've played with a logitech for almost 20 years before it gave in. Since then I've been looking for mice left and right. In the end the most important thing is durability; it takes weeks or months to get used to a new mouse with scbw. Therefore you want, whatever mouse you choose, to last.

Personally i settled with the Logitech B100. Logitech builts durable products, and someone around me had this mouse surplus. Optical, wired, lightweight, two buttons.

I tried the B170 because it was wireless and looks cooler. But somehow it didn't have enough space to grip it, and the weight balance felt off.

I do see the benefit of wireless because you don't want a stiff wire messing with your subtle mousing. However, the wired mouses are very light, and that makes for effortless mousing, too.
