+ Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler + ![]() WHAT CAN I EVEN SAY TO HYPE THIS MORE. IT'S ![]() ![]() The Grand Finals of the Altitude ISL3 will take place on the coming weekend and presented to you on Saturday (but wait! there's more! keep reading to find out about the 3rd/4th place match and a showmatch!). The series will consist of a Best of 9 on the maps listed below and the winner will walk away with 1000$ in prizemoney. ![]() Sziky's ISL3 run so far has been amazing, dropping only a a single game throughout. The likes of Alfio, Bizzy, TechnicS and Bibiane have fallen to his might and as the reigning champion he now has a shot a defending his title ![]() dOTY defiantly qualified for ISL3, proving he did not need to be on the reservation list to make it in. Some have seen him as the underdog going into some matches, but 3-0 and 4-0 victories over Ace and Sneazel has silenced all doubters. Thoughts on the upcoming Grand Finals Bakuryu - German "Moustache" Zerg i think sziky will take it 5-2, some close games. iirc dOTY will practice hard, but i think it wont be enough. actually i just want sziky to win^^ zerg ftw - Zerg > Deutschland? - Well, if a german wins isl, it should be me :D otherwise it would be hard for me to accept it xD but ye... sziky is better than karate, and doty vs karate was close series, if they played again, i think karate would have won because he figured doty's build out near the end (unless doty plays different builds) Defi - Russian Protoss, sponsor of showmatches My opinion is maximum 1 game for dOTY. Is it bo7 or 9? - 9 - then i think 5-0 or 5-1 for Sziky, since Sziky's ZvP is far away from non-korean level. - will doty put up a fight though? -ofc he will, since its the final of the best tournament outside of Korea. But I am really sure Sziky wont let dOTY do smth serious in games. That's my opinion Plumbum - Russian Zerg Doty is running extremely good in this tour, i hope he will prepare enough to take more then 1-2 games from Sziky, but looks like no one can stop Sziky, when he is fighting for such awesome money prizes. BW forever! Hacklebeast - ISL3 caster and BW fanboy I won’t be surprising anyone when I say Sziky is the favorite. He was the favorite as soon as he decided to participate in ISL. But doty has all the tools to pull an upset. Those quirky aggressive timings he used to dismantle ace are exactly the kind of thing sziky is weakest against in ZvP. If doty can channel his inner 2005 protoss, and walls properly to at least have a chance against the sziky lings, we will have ourselves a fantastic series. corumjhaelen - Sponsor extraordinaire Favorite is obviously Sziky, especially as his best match up is zvp and dOTY's best is PvT. personnally is expect 5-0 or 5-1 depending on whether Sziky has to work next saturday. i don't know the maps, but I'm not sure that even if Game trolled to the max he could really help dOTY^^ that being said i think the serie will be good because Sziky won't cheese too much, so the macro games have the potential to be good, plus dOTY cheeses a bit so we could have some funny stuff coming from him and as a zerg fan I hope Sziky will avenge Ace, his fellow hungarian zerg and i'll add that the third place match should be pretty good too =) Gecko[XP] - Community guy and BW Liquipedia hero I think Sziky will destroy dOTY pretty easily, his latest games against Pusan shows what he can do. dOTY isn't bad and i know him from the German scene, but well. Even the strongest Zealot control and funky openings won't save him in a longer best of series. im still kinda rooting for him, due to us being germans and stuff. if he can actually show his full potential he might take 2-3 games off sziky, but beyond that... sziky has more experience and way better control in that particular match up eOnZeRg - Zerges Españoles! doty ^^ - score? - 4-3, EPIC SERIES. is bo7 right? - BO9!! - 5-2 ![]() ![]() Although eliminated in their respective Semifinals, these two Broodwar Warriors can still battle it out for 500$ worth of prizemoney, with the winner taking the 300$ lion's share. As a preshow to the grand finals, they will play a Bo5 for the Altitude ISL3's Bronze Medal. Map Order: Sniper Ridge Tau Cross Ground Zero Benzene Gladiator As Saturday will see the Altitude ISL3's last official playday, we will close out the tournament with a showmatch on Sunday. Can't disclose a lot of details yet, but the winner of the ISL will face a mysterious Korean guest. Keep your eyes peeled for details on this one! Livestream is being a bitch though an keeps sending me emails about them cleaning up my database. As a rueful result so I've already lost the videos of Episode 3 and the Xmas Special ![]() ![]() + Show Spoiler [What is TL-Arena?] + The TeamLiquid Arena event (or TL-Arena for short) was based on a minigame found in the Gold Saucer, a casino slash entertainment park in the game Final Fantasy 7. Said minigame, called The Arena, would require you to pick one of your characters and fight off 8 monsters. After every victory a slot machine would determine a handicap for the player (e.g. broken weapon, no magic etc). These handicaps would stack, making your character weaker and weaker as he progresses. It required you to defeat all the monsters to win the game. TeamLiquid Arena invites a prominent player from the StarCraft scene and pitches this player versus several players of a much lower level. After every win, a handicap, picked randomly from a predetermined pool, is assigned to this player and stacks with any previously begotten handicaps making it harder and harder for the show's hero to get his 8 kills. In the run-up to each event, we held brainstorms and poll so the community could weigh in on what maps would be played and what handicaps would be added to the pool. TeamLiquid Arena Season 1 ran from September 2009 til March 2010, resulting in 6 shows and a Xmas Special. You can find more information here: ![]() Welcome to the TL Arena Season 1 VOD archive! Some years ago, a bunch of us organised a series of events called "TL Arena". We had a great run and I recently managed to upload three episodes (listed below) for anyone who cares to enjoy. I'll will try to add a bit of a Why-to-watch summary to each episode to help you decide and because I think that there's even some interesting stuff gone odwn for the SC2 crowd. Enjoy! ![]() ![]() ![]() Announcement • Polls/Live • Results + Show Spoiler [Why to watch?] + Yes that's the same Cloud that now plays Terran for aTn and yes he played Protoss back in the day. Having won four WCG Italys in a row he used to be among the greats of Europe's BroodWar scene - a force to be reckoned with. In this episode, Cloud plays his games with style and class. The real reason you should watch though is his game vs TL's resident spambot Konadora (back in the day anyway) which is probably my favorite Arena moment ever. Also on an interesting note: we had, currently It's Gosu's, ![]() ![]() ![]() Announcement • Polls/Live • Results + Show Spoiler [Why to watch?] + Legionnaire is a living legend. Having been a progamer in Korea and holding the record of most Reaver kills he was Australia's BroodWar hero. But wait! There's more! This show also features Husky and Raelcun! They're both pretty big now names but they once commented a TL Arena Episode. ^_^ ![]() ![]() ![]() Announcement • Polls/Live • Results + Show Spoiler [Why to watch?] + Oystein is such a hero, being among the last players who still stream BroodWar on occasion. Below you'll find an overview of the players that have qualified so far, some fresh interviews, and a look ahead at only remaining way to get on board. All report at Gate 7, the ISL is just about to take off. As per usual, you can follow the Qualifier 7 at hacklebeast and L_Master, whose streams start at 20:00 CET Saturday and 19:00 CET Sunday respectively. Qualifier 7 musings When the qualifying format for the Altitude's ISL3 was first announced, there was a lot of backlash. No ladder stage, but gruelling single elimination brackets. The worst part though? Only three tries. I have to say though, as an onlooker, this whole scheme makes matters a whole deal more interesting as we get to watch the players make their decisions. Let's see... first there's the mappool that people can choose as per preference and then there's the thought that the later qualifiers will be easier since all the gosus have already qualified. Then again, said gosus might be thinking along those same lines, plus waiting for the last qualifier to make an attempt is a waste of your precious two other tries. Metagaming abounds. As far as mappool goes, feel Qualifier 7 might be the most attractive one. With Sniper Ridge, Ground Zero and Jade it's certainly the most modern one - taking also into account how these new proleague maps have been featured heavily in other BW leagues as well. There's a number of very skilled players still in the queue to take a shot at qualifying and, although the majority of foreigners' finest have already made it through, everyone will be wanting to get in on Q7. The three-tries rule is out of the window now anyway, since it's everyone's last try. It's crunch-time - do or die. It's ISL3. ![]() Qualifier 1: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Qualifier 2: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Qualifier 3: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Qualifier 4: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Qualifier 5: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Qualifier 6: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (race division: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Interview with Southpark Polish Zerg Southpark made it through in Qualifier 4, beating ![]() You qualified on first try in Qualifier 4. Interviews + Show Spoiler [Sziky] + What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? I was glad since 1. it's a tourney with a prize pool which is a huge motivation, and 2. BW is dying rapidly since sc2 came out and i feel only such leagues can save the remaining players. Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? Although i had no serious problems with it so far, i would prefer if the matches were played on sunday since i'd rather go out saturday evening than playing bw. Also sometimes i work on friday night, like last week, when i had to play Astro, i worked until 6 am and no sleep at night has it's effects on my play. Sadly i will work at night before the match against pro too. Being that you were a top 12 qualifier in the ladder stage of the starleague, did you end up watching your opponents or learning anything in the group stages? I somewhat already knew most players' playstyle but of course there were some surprises as well. On the same topic of top 12, as most do not know, the first place ladder qualifier received a monetary prize. How do you feel about placing only 6 points under Michael right before the ladder stage was closed? To be honest i wasn't surpised because i felt it won't be enough but i expected someone else than Michael (i didn't even see him at the ladder and we didn't play ![]() At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? I wasn't particularly afraid of any match, although overall i had a small fear of failing. When i got to know that i had to play Astro insted of a zvz, i thought i would make it. What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? my match against pro i'd only say that he beat me before so he could do it again. sneazel vs pike - since sneazel beat michael, i'd say he'll beat pike too 3-1, although i haven't seen the series yet. baku vs ace - I have to say if they played today probably bakuryu would win it but there's 1 week left :D so gl Ace will win 3-2 Kashu vs bibiane - I think bibiane's tvz is not bad so he has a chance against kashu but i think kashu will win 3-1 gl gogo kashu Given that you are the absolute favored player in this starleague, what are your thoughts about the level of competition, and players in general thus far in the tournament? A lot of good players gathered together and some of them were already eliminated so i certainly think its a high level competition. I've got to add though that i miss the big old 'rivals' who stopped playing BW like White-Ra, ret, idra, dima, strelok etc. But anyone could show good results, there always can be surprises, so nobody should be put down!!! So as far as predictions go who do you think will make the semifinals from the other legs? According to my calculation kashu and ace will play it which will be a tough fight if it happens. Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? Sneazel, because i think my zvp is better than my zvz. How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? wuthering heis ( (C) by sziky ) - was never a beloved map i think, not even in korea, i dont think its appropriate here longinus 2 - can be imba at some match ups neo balwey ( (C) by sziky) - i don't know this map yet aztec - good hbr - for zvt, ouch ![]() fs - its balanced, i think its fine. How do you feel about going into a best of 5 ZvT? How confident are you in your ZvT, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat Pro7ecT? Sadly i'm not really confident these days, i dont think i'm good enough to say it will be easy win. I like this mu, maybe its the hardest with zerg. Bo5 is fine for me (the more, the better). Now i'd say 1. zvp 2. zvt 3. zvz. Actually my actual mind state also affects what i like more. Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? Anyhow, i won't be glad if he really retires. But i think we can hope for another tournament, greater than any of them before. Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? gl to everyone we have a nice top8 good matches will be played. go h u n g a r i a n s ! ! ! glglglglglgl + Show Spoiler [Pro7ect] + What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? Well, I was not able to participate in TSL and ISL1 because I was inactive, so ISL2 was my first big event since I came back. I thought that ISL2 is going to be as new opportunities for playing with good players. I didn’t make a goal to reach as far as I could, because I was not confident in my skill. I can say that it was very big luck for me to be in Round 8 of ISL2. Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? Wow, I’ve never heard about that matter! 19 CET Saturday is very good time for me. I didn’t have any troubles to come to the channel in time. Being that you were a top 12 qualifier in the ladder stage of the starleague, did you end up watching your opponents or learning anything in the group stages? I watched only the games of my teammate Plumbum and several games from Sayle’s stream. Overall, how many hours or games would you say you've practiced so prepare up to the Round of 8? I just played some ladder games and practice with my teammates. I think I played at least 2 hours every day. At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? As you know, I got W.O’s for my previous Ro64 and Ro32 matches. It was not good for me, because I expected to play and to get some practical experiences from official matches. But I practiced a lot of TvP games, so I was confident I would win Andrey. In the Round of 8 I will face Sziky, he is very good player, indeed. But TvZ is my favorite match-up, so I think I can show all my skill in these matches. What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? In the second leg… I think that Sneazel will not have much troubles with the games against Pike as he’ve already defeated trutaCz and Michael who were among top 12 ladder players. Next, Bakuryu against Ace. Both of them are good players, ZvZ match-up, so I think their games are going to be very close and the winner will be Ace. Bibiane vs Kashu. I don’t know exactly, but Kashu seem to be in very good shape, so my prediction is for him. Many would say that Sziky is the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what are your thoughts on potentially facing him in later rounds? Yes, Sziky is very good and as I know, ZvT is the best match-up for him. But Starcraft is quite unpredictable, so everything can happen. I will do my best to offer considerable resistance to Sziky. Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? I want to play against some Terran players because I feel very comfortable in TvT matchup. How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? Most of them are standard maps, except Wuthering Heights and Beltway. To be honest, I’ve never played on those maps T_T How do you feel about going into a best of 5 TvZ? How confident are you in your TvZ, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat ![]() TvZ was my best matchup before I went inactive. Now it is not so good as before, but I have several days to practice, so I think I can prepare some surprises for him. Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? I think Game should withdraw his retirement decision. Because there are not so much people who organize such great tourneys as ISL, Gambit Cup, etc. Players need such ambitious people! Game, don’t leave! ^^ Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? I would like to say hello to my reps teammates, all visitors of reps.ru, defiler.ru, sc2tv.ru. I hope I will show my best play against Sziky. I am looking forward for dynamic and epic games. Thank you all! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Round of 16 will be a sad day for Poland since the two remaining Poles are facing one another - guaranteeing one to be knocked out of the ISL. Don't be sad though, because the match will certainly be a good one. Sneazel finished off the ladder stages at B+ and has defeated two Zergs so far in ![]() ![]() Pike was a relative unknown to me, having been eliminated by Szajna and Bishop in the early rounds of the first ISL. However, his ISL2 record so far has been impressive. 34-4 on ladder, and defeating ![]() ![]() ![]() It's hard to call this series. Both players have been showing us great games and it's sad to see either one go. On the bright side though, both players have shown tendencies towards long games, or at least aren't afraid to take it there. Sneazel has been watching Sayle's stream, so we might see some Arbiters?, and watching Pike's minimap as he swarms seven control groups of units over the maps gives me nerdchills. I expect a close, hard-fought series. Who will become King Poland? Poll: Who do you want to win? Sneazel (35) Pike (19) 54 total votes Your vote: Who do you want to win? Interviews + Show Spoiler [Sneazel] + What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? Nothing special. I just felt happy to participate in such a big tour. I desired my games to be broadcast live. What is more, I was positively astonished when I saw the pool-prize Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? Personally, I think it would be better to play about 21CET, but 19CET is also ok. But on the other hand, the later I would play, the better it would be because of my poor internet connection Being that you were a top 12 qualifier in the ladder stage of the starleague, did you end up watching your opponents or learning anything in the group stages? Yes, I did. I'm still trying to analyze games of my potential opponents. At the moment, I prefer watching BW streams (Gambit Cup, ISL2, Defiler.ru and other players' streams) to playing myself. Overall, how many hours or games would you say you've practiced to prepare up to the Round of 8? I have to admit that recently I've not been paying so much attention to playing BW. On average, I have played maybe 2-3 games daily, playing mainly for fun and choosing offraces. At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? Replying to your first question, I realized it after matches against Michael(OD) LOL. As you have seen, I was really lucky in the last game, but I made an unexpected comeback. As for upcoming matches, I feel I'm prepared to challenge next top Zerg player. I'm focused on that match. What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? All my teammates from Gt like Michael, AstrO, SouthPark, trutaCz and Andrey have been eliminated before Ro8. Only Pike - my polish BW-mate - left, and I would wish him good luck, but I do not (LOL), as he is my rival in the next round. Many would say that Sziky is the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what are your thoughts on potentially facing him in later rounds? I hope that Pro7ecT will beat him because I would shit my pants at the thought of playing versus him. I remember games when he has beaten me so hard. So as far as predictions go who do you think will make the semifinals from the other legs? In my opinion, the other legs will constitute: Sziky, Ace and Kashu - all Hungarian players. Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? I do not have a real choice, because in this tournament there are so many Zergs, but I would like to play PvP. How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? I do not like HBR and Neo Aztec because it is really hard to play PvZ on them. The rest of maps are alright. How do you feel about going into a best of 5 PvZ? How confident are you in your PvZ, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat Pike? It is the hardest question ever! PvZ is really enjoyable to play as well as to watch. As I said before, in this event I have played mostly against Zergs, so I think this MU is ok. All my Match Ups are level with each other. We both play at a similar level and the case of who will advance to the Semifinals will definitely not be decided in 3 games. I think there could be five games. Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? I think he is gonna to comeback, in front of him there is a great future in USA and Korea later on. He has the makings of being Progamer. In my opinion, playing SC:BW can be his job and he could be breadwinner. Just kidding of course ^^ But seriously, I believe that he will retire. I'm also considering doing the same. Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? Just regards to my fans (if I have some) ROFL + Show Spoiler [Pike] + Hi I'm LRM)Pike and I'm taller than Game. What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? I had no idea about announcing ISL2 and I wouldn't untill I was fired from holiday job. Then i came back to home, started playing sc:bw and saw ISL2 ID's on iCCup so I registered quickly and started playing ladder because I had only few days to qualif. Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? Now when i say 'Saturday' i know that i have to do something important and i mean ISL2 ![]() How did you feel about your group of the group stage? There were qualifing a lot of players with much lower skill and i had no doubts that i will pass group stage easly. I didn’t know any of my opponents from my group but no offence to anyone, i stopped fallowing foreign scene few years ago and have no idea who new plays now at high level. Overall, how many hours or games would you say you've practiced to prepare up to the Round of 8? I haven't spent yet many hours to preper but i'm going to play some. At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? When i saw bracket i knew that only SouthPark can stop me before being in RO8 but i passed him so here i am! No doubts about upcoming matches, just have to play my best and beat Sneazel ![]() What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? Sziky vs Pro7ect will be really awsome match, can't wait to see replays from it, I bet on Sziky. Bakuryu vs Ace it's zvz so everything can happen in this match up, but imo Bakuryu is little better in this MU. And Bibiane vs Kashu can be really curious - Bibiane has good TvZ but Kashu is solid, strong zerg and also can surprise with other race (maybe he is getting ready something crazy?! ![]() Many would say that Sziky is the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what are your thoughts on potentially facing him in later rounds? He is probably the most skilled and experienced player in this tourney, I placed him at least top3 of ISL2 but now Pro7ect showed that he's also very strong and on the other hand Sziky can always lose in zvz with one of us - zergs ![]() Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? Hmm zvz or zvt.. both match ups have pros and cons and have no idea which will be better for me. I focus now at my zvp. How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? They are horrible :< If i will lose it's your fault Game. How do you feel about going into a best of 5 ZvP? How confident are you in your ZvP, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat SneazeL? I feel confident if only i won't do any stupid moves. About ranking them it would look like ZvP=ZvT>ZvZ (lottery of zvz decide about it). It won't be easy but i know i can beat him. Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? I have no idea what's going on in this crazy Game's head but hope he won't disappear like dinosaurs and have conntact with us still ![]() Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? Poll: Who do you want to win? Ace (28) Bakuryu (27) 55 total votes Your vote: Who do you want to win? Interviews + Show Spoiler [Bakuryu] + What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? i was happy because i got another chance to prove myself, after i lost in ISL1 pretty early to dragon in ro32 Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? well its ok for me because i live in CET, nothing much to say about it^^ Being that you were a top 12 qualifier in the ladder stage of the starleague, did you end up watching your opponents or learning anything in the group stages? only 1 of my enemies had 1 game which helped me, other than that, there were many walkovers in the group stage.... Overall, how many hours or games would you say you've practiced to prepare up to the Round of 8? until now, nothing. but i guess it will be around 40 games At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? when i saw my lings in castros main in 4th game and he had no sunk, i knew i could take it home even through it ended up being close. i wont get easier in the next matches so i try to give my best and maybe i can pull trough. What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? i think, sziky, pike and bibiane will win. no idea about my game Many would say that Sziky is the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what are your thoughts on potentially facing him in later rounds? i will worry about that when i actually get to the finals Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? I would like to play kashu in semi and sneazel in finals How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? i dont like that wuthering heights is one of the set maps, i would consider it the hitchhiker of ISL2. other than that... meh How do you feel about going into a best of 5 ZvZ? How confident are you in your ZvZ, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat Ace? the last time i played vs ace (5 months ago i think) we went 4-4. as i said in my ISL2 interview, im not very confident in my zvz and he can watch my games vs castro and zzzero... so yeah... zvz compared to my other matchups? i think its hard to compare that, i think im equal bad everywhere. Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? no idea, if he wants to retire then he should retire. its his decision and nobody can help him with that. he should do what he thinks is right for him^^ Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? hm not really, i just hope that i can win, so that my special song wont hurt me :D + Show Spoiler [Ace] + What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? I was really happy, because ISL is the biggest SC tournament nowadays. After ISL1 I was inactive, I did not practice, I played only on CW games, so it's really hard for me to become that powerful again. Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? Well, it's ok I think. Players have time only on weekends, they couldn't play in different time. I have only one problem with it, I can't watch the stream, because I have games too! :D Overall, how many hours or games would you say you've practiced to prepare up to the Round of 8? Well, I have practiced against all of my opponents. I was training 6-7 hours a day for 4-5 days before my game against Ramms, and 3-4 hours for 3-4 days against DeSka. Unfortunately both of these games were freewins. Against UltrA, I did not practice, I played only ladder games. At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? When I saw the brackets, I knew I could make it into the Round of 8, because there was no big monster zergs like Michael or trutaCz. What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? I think Sziky, Sneazel and Kashu will make the Semifinals, and i hope i could do it too against Bakuryu. Many would say that Sziky is the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what are your thoughts on potentially facing him in later rounds? Yes, it's true. He's the best player right now, and I'm really happy, about the fact that I could only meet him in the Grand Finals. Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? I'd like to face against a Terran probably. My ZvZ is kinda weak nowadays, and I don't really like ZvZ, because it's a micro game. I'd prefer some Terran guy. How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? Well, in ZvZ the maps don't really matter, so I don't think I should be sad about it. Anyway I think Pike could have some troubles against Sneazel because of the maps. How do you feel about going into a best of 5 ZvZ? How confident are you in your ZvZ, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat Bakuryu? Well, I think we're gonna play exciting matches, and it's ok for me. I have great zerg friends who practice with me. I think my ZvT>ZvZ>ZvP right now. Bakuryu is a really good player, but as I heard, he does not like ZvZ that much, and with some practice I will beat him. Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? Oh well, I think he wants to stop BW, cuz of the less activity from the community, and he's 100% sincere. BUT!!! I hope he won't leave, cuz he's a cool guy, and he does a really good job for the BW community with his tournament's organization. Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? GO SAS! GO HUNGARIANS FOR THE WIN! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kashu is random, or a racepicker, or Zerg. We're not so sure to be honest. The main thing to note though is that he's from Hungary, and with 3 out of the 8 remaining players being from Hungary, we should probably suspect that there's something in the water there. Kashu is immensely versatile - he played TvZ versus ![]() ![]() ![]() And that's pretty much as far as predictions goes. Bibiane thoroughly impressed me against Plumbum, who I had picked as favourite for that match, but since it's completely unpredictable what Kashu will do it's hard to say anything sensible. There is a possibility Kashu has depleted his resources - showing no less than 5 match ups in his previous rounds, and planning to show 3 more in the oncoming series might be too much for any human being to handle. Then again, maybe the complete opposite is true and we'll find out how firghtening those Hungarian powers truly are. Poll: Who do you want to win? Kashu (41) Bibiane (26) 67 total votes Your vote: Who do you want to win? Interviews + Show Spoiler [Bibiane] + What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? At first I took tournament just for fun but when I got qualified for 108 I expected I would make it to later on. Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? Since I live in Canada and the game time is at 1pm Saturday, it's convenient for me. How did you feel about your group of the group stage? I thought it was going to be easy althought I haven't played them before. Overall, how many hours or games would you say you've practiced to prepare up to the Round of 8? I've only managed to play two games to prepare, until to the round of 8. At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? Since I got two byes I thought that getting into ro8 would'nt be too difficult. No. What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? I think Sziky will make it to the finals. Many would say that Sziky is the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what are your thoughts on potentially facing him in later rounds? My thoughts on potentially facing Sziky in later rounds doesn't bother me because he is like any other zerg player which I don't think it's hard to beat. So as far as predictions go who do you think will make the semifinals from the other legs? I think Sziky, Sneazel, and Bakuryu will make it to the semifinals. Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? It doesn't really matter to me since they are both zerg players. If I have to choose one, I'd say Bakuryu because I played some games with him before. How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? I don't feel comfortable because I haven't played the most maps in the round of 8. How do you feel about going into a best of 5 TvR? How confident are you in your TvR, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat The Comeback Kid aka Kashu? It might be hard to prepare to play against random but I am pretty confident beating Kashu. Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? I think he is sincere because he has been playing for a long time and achieved many things. Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? Special thanks to all the SL members that have helped me to get into the round of 8 especially Alec and Agavond. + Show Spoiler [Kashu] + Hello, I'm Gergely 'Kashu' Fincza, 25 years old, and I have been playing SC:BW since 2002. In my real life I have a little web developing and design company, and I just finished the University of Economics; Faculty of Business. In my e-sports life I achieved what I wanted when I won the Hungarian WCG in 2006 and I participated in Monza. After that I stopped practicing and just played in clan wars, LAN tournaments, and online competitions. ISL2 is the only one tournament where I practice every week again! What were your feelings about ISL2 when it was originally announced? I never watch proleague vods or anything, but in the first ISL, I really liked Ace's game and Sayle's casts, so I was very happy to see this competition again. At first I didn't care to sign up, because I don't like the ladder qualification, but when I saw that there will be many players, I decided to try it. Later I was shocked that I could reach the top 12, because I'm really bad at laddering. Overall, we know it's a big concern among foreign players, how do you feel about the day and time that all Kaal's International StarLeague matches are played on? We don't have a problem, because it's 19:00 in Hungary on Saturday. If I finish my games, I can still go outside in time. ![]() Being that you were a top 12 qualifier in the ladder stage of the starleague, did you end up watching your opponents or learning anything in the group stages? I didn't care about the players and opponents before the top 64, because I knew there will be a minimum of one week for preparation, and I'd just have to concentrate one opponent per week. I saw just my teammates games. Overall, how many hours or games would you say you've practiced to prepare up to the Round of 8? I never play that much, because I'm currently working 10 hours every day and I have 2-3 football match/training in per week, so I can play only late in the night. Despite that, I have very skilled teammates, and I can prepare with them 4-5 hours in a week. Btw I'm thinking of new build orders every week, and if I have time I practice them against some usual play. At what point could you see that you would make it into the Round of 8, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? When I saw the brackets of the top 64, I knew if I could beat Whistler in the first round, I can manage the top 8-4 somehow. It's never easy, because everybody is skilled at this level, and there are many personal things that can disturb somebody before the games. I think I have good chances against Bibiane, because I have 25-30 LAN tournaments, 180-200 clan war games, and dont know how many online competitions in my pocket. Therefore, I can play very confidentally. I don't know if my skill is enough to win, but I know I can accomplish what I know. What are your predictions for your fellow tournament players in the Round of 8? In the 1st leg I'm sure in Sziky's win, who will face off with Sneazel or Pike in the semifinal. As I saw, Sneazel is very good in PvZ, but I remember Pike's best mu was ZvP some years ago, so it will be very hard. I bet on Pike, because I want him to win ![]() Many would say that Sziky is the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what are your thoughts on potentially facing him in later rounds? I don't think there is best player now, because Ace, Bakuryu and Sziky are very good level now. But finally I think Sziky will win the whole tournament, because he always had something back luck in TSL or ISL1, and I don't think he will miss this chance. Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the semifinals for you? If I can reach the semi-final, I don't have many chance, because Baku or Ace will come there, so I will have to play against Zerg, which is the worst for me. I know many things that hurt for Zergs, but sometimes I can't make what I want. My play against zerg is very complex, because I try to find the best opportunities in order to choose the right race and what is best for actual map. In this competition I really prepared for TvZ against Whistler, because I knew that's the best chance for me. Against TechnicS I couldn't decide earlier, because I didn't know his experiences (I thought he is Terran btw), so I had to discover my chances in the real games... That's why I lost two games easily, then I changed my mind and used safe protoss macro techs. How do you feel about the Round of 8 maps? I think it's enough fair, but Wuthering is not so good for zergs. I don't have to find special strategies for these maps. How do you feel about going into a best of 5 RvT? How confident are you in your RvT, and how would you rank it with your other matchups? Also, how confident are you in your ability to beat Bibiane? I think I will use zerg, but I'm confident in PvT too, so we will see, I didn't start my practice games yet. ZvT is my best match up, which I can't show in this competition yet, so I'm sure there will be one ZvT minimum. My PvT is good enough, and I can say my TvT is the worst, although as I remember, I always won my higher ranked TvT's somehow. ![]() Game announced his retirement after the end of this tournament. Do you think he's sincere, or that he has something up his sleeve? Why? Hahhh.. :D I don't think there can be anything in real life, what announce a "retirement". It's not a TV series ![]() So my advice for Game is to don't say such bullshit, if he won't go to army, he can show his skills sometimes in game and organization too in the future. Lastly, any shout outs you'd like to make? I know that it's usual to say some thanks in this part of interview, but I really want to say thank you to everybody who works on this competition. It's very good, because after this tournament I got so many positive impressions from everybody who saw my games, something I never felt before. I hope I can play enjoyable games in the TOP 8, and I hope later too. For more interviews, keep an eye on Hacklebeast's Interview Thread ![]() All matches are Best of Five. ISL2 SUPPLYBLOCK BINGO (for the lulz) As the ISL progresses, we, the onlookers, have begun to notice a trend. There seems to be an awful lot of being-supply-blocked. After so many games, there can be only one logical conclusion: The ISL is suffering from a Supply Block Curse. While curses are certainly no laughing matter, we can still do our best to make the best out of a bad situation. I therefore present to you the ISL2 SUPPLYBLOCK BINGO. HOW TO PLAY? 1) Go here: (replace xxYOURUSERNAMExx with your username) http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/User:xxYOURUSERNAMExx/ISL2SupplyBlockBingo 2) Click "login" top right and log in using TL ID and Password. Backspace back to the url in step 1 and refresh the page. Your name should now be at the very top of the screen. 3) Hit "edit" at the very top of the page and paste in the following: {| style="background: {{RaceColor|R}}; text-align:center;" border="1" width=150 4) Replace all the letters (A - Y) with numbers that you think people will get supply blocked at in the next ISL matches. Needless to say, 200/200 doesn't count and no number can be entered twice. Note to help you out, here's an overview of possible Supply Caps per Race per Townhall. + Show Spoiler + Terran:

Hop over to the ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Recap There be spoilers here... The Round of 32 had it's fair share of upsets and notable drop outs. We say goodbye to Boy Wonder ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Drama Before I get to the actual Round of 16, there are some things to clear up concerning the advancing players. I'll best leave this to Game. About Bibiane vs Terranboy Bibiane vs TerranBoy was decided when Bibiane beat TerranBoy 3-2 in the 5th match. However, Bibiane broke a rule and used the same map twice. Given that it's the first time in this starleague that the rule has been broken, there was some leniency. I told Bibiane if he could hunt down TerranBoy within 24 hours of our conversation, and get him to agree to re-play the 5th match + provide proof, then that could decide the match. Indeed they did re-play, and Bibiane again won, therefore Bibiane will advance. About Ruarc Ruarc? Everyone wonders why Ruarc was so good. Me too, actually. Yet, in such a short period, he gained major fanship. I'm pretty sure a few people can guess who was playing on that name. He's a Terran, he's named after a Terran function. Yes, that's right, TTF and AstrO got so easily demolished by none other than Scan. It seems Ruarc literally went to pick Scan up an hour away from his house to play his matches, and then brought him back when he was done. We weren't entirely sure, as he changed up some of his hotkey patterns with Zerg until some last minute replays. Those being: The replay pack Scan sold to Shade[AoV], 3 games where AstrO 3-0ed Scan the day before PvZ and told him all the build orders he was going to use, and a few other sneaky ones we got from people who were playing Scan PvZ days before. Only after those, were we able to go from 90% sure given the endless amount of replays and material we went over, to 100.1%. Therefore, Ruarc is disqualified. TTF and AstrO will be playing a Best of 5 for the Round of 32 spot Wednesday at 20CET, and that match will decide who goes into the Round of 16. P.S this was the third time Scan was banned from this league. First as a general ban for cheating. Second as a ladder player who played within the last few days. Third, for this. I guess it's best to question why Scan was banned initially, given his cheating past, and cheating in every major tournament and starleague. Sziky vs Octzerg has two top foreign zergs facing off, Michael(OD) takes on Australian streaming hero GoD, Ace the SniperZerg got a BYE against Ramms, but now has to prove his skill in the fickle ZvZ matchup against DeSka, and in Kolll vs CastrO we have two more foreign legends with one doomed to elimination. Here are Game's thoughts on the Round of 32: Game said: OctZerg vs Sziky can be a tournament changing match. With the given luck addition to ZvZ, both are great players and both could easily make it to the finals. andrey + SzajnA are both weak TvT but strong players, so it will be interesting. Pro7ecT will have his first test after winning the last defiler tournament by playing a Shauni-esque opponent. Michael and GoD is by far the 3rd best match after OctZerg + Sziky and Ace + DeSka, but most likely will provide the most entertainment due to not being ZvZ. PatrrOn vs TerrOr will ultimately decide who the king of South America is. Ace and DeSka was the semifinals match last ISL, a nice repeat so early in the tournament. And I'm sure people can't wait to see what kind of play Plumbum will pull out to defeat such a mechanical monster like dsaqwe. Last but not least, TechnicS and Kashu are both crowd favorites who can deliver compelling play and ultimately the most likely surprising series. Game: With so little TvZ, the imbalance of Empire of the Sun becomes null. However, it might make for a fair 3rd or 4th game in Kashu vs TechnicS. Other than that, Icarus with all of these mirror matchups can only enhance Shauni + Pro7ecT, SneazeL + trutaCz, possibly Bakuryu's, and Kashu + TechnicS's series. Need more hype? The last time I played BW multiplayer was about 9-10 years ago and while I had fond memories of stomping my brother and a few other people on LAN parties, I didn't remember much else about it anymore. I therefore took the opportunity to play a few rounds of SC2BW, which weren't very successful but reminded me of how the challenge provided by the 12-unit selection limit actually. :p I decided that I should compare it to BW, which I quickly downloaded from the iCCup website. I thought: "Well, I'm a Diamond player in SC2, so it shouldn't be too hard to play a little against the AI. I'll try the new builds that came into existence long after I stopped playing BW..." I was a fool. :p I decided on Terran as my first race and picked Protoss as opponent, read the 1rax FE TvP build from Liquipedia, executed it (though a little poorly) and got immediately stomped by what about 8 Zealots swarming into my base. gg. :p In game 2 I got the hang of basic macro (producing workers, units, etc.), only to get nearly stomped by Zealots again. I microed a few Vultures and managed to barely hold them off and move out into a siege contain of the Protoss base, after which I started practising macro again... Very unsuccessfully, as the 11k minerals at the end of the game proved :p Well, with a maxed mech army I was easily able to crush the Protoss defenses, so at least it wasn't too humiliating :p At least i learned a few things: 1. Unit control in BroodWar is different from SC. It'll take a lot of practise before I master this. 2. Moving two tanks through a choke by simply telling them to is impossible. Pathing isn't as spoonfed as in SC2. Like I said in point 1 I will need to practise this into mastery, and have attained a new found respect, no, reverence for players that manage to control their units well. 3. SCVs are actually extremely fast. :p 4. Macroing properly is extremely difficult and I have realised how mechanics greatly benefit a superior player. I like the challenge this provides. 5. The computer's Zealots attacks caught me off guard. I will need to work on scouting better as well as learning how to properly adapt to my opponent's strategies. I plan on playing around a bit more, just for the nostalgia, the Unit AI that requires precision and focus makes it a very challenging experience. The lack of Auto-Mining or Multi-Building-Selection doesn't bother me much, I still managed to be far oversaturated on 3 bases :p It was a nice excursion into history, I think I will play some more in order to properly assess SC2's predecessor. Naturally I realise I am in no way bound to choose and play either game exclusively. :p + Show Spoiler + ![]() AoV's StarLeague Grand Finals - Best of 9 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Loser picks from: Benzene, Bloody Ridge, Tau Cross 1.1, ![]() by Dan1870220133262 ![]() After a full month of gaming, the AoV StarLeague is finally coming to an end. A: I felt it was great because I haven't played a lot of official tournaments and I think there are not many Brood War tournaments since StarCraft 2 came out. Q: How did you progress through the qualifying ladder section? How difficult was it? Did you ever have think you might not make it? Any other feelings/thoughts? A: First of all, I played TSL2 ladder qualification before playing ISL. In that time, I was a rusty Terran player because I came back to play StarCraft again in 2007. I had forgotten a lot of strategies and I was getting my skills back. After 1 year, I heard about ISL from people and I decided to play since I've practiced a lot since those days. I felt comfortable that I'll qualify and it wasn't really difficult for me. You might have realized if u checked my ISL ladder replays folder, I played only Zerg/Protoss. I made it with decent win ratio. I believed that I could make it by playing offraces. Q: How did you feel about your group of the group stage? A: I felt it would be easy for me to advance to the Ro32. I was guessing JoeKim and I would advance to the Ro32. However, I was extremely suprised when Cute beat JoeKim twice in a row. I also felt Cute had a lot of practice before the Ro56 started. Q: At what pointcould you see that you would make it into the semi finals, and do you have any doubts about any of the upcoming matches? A: When Ro32 brackets were posted, I saw a lot of Zergs and Terrans on my side. I felt that it was going to be fun because I love TvZ. On the other hand, I saw a lot of Protoss players on bracket 2 and I was like wow. How come all protoss players on that side? I don't know how LRM)Game did this but it was fine for me because I like TvZ. Q: Many would say that Sziky was the best player in the tournament and favored him to win, what were your thoughts on having to face him in the quarter finals? A: Before the ISL was announced, I played against him TvZ 5 ladder games. I killed him 5-0. when the fifth game almost over, he bmed me that I have a lot of marines and vessels without tanks (blatant lie because Sziky doesn't speak English). I was really disappointed with him because of that attitude and that time, he started hating me so much and bm'd me everytime he sees me (another lie because again.. he doesn't speak English). I also couldn't play a lot of games after Ro16 was finished because I had a lot of things to do concerning school. I was hoping that I'll win him 3-1 or 3-2. Q: So as far as predictions go who do you think will make the finals from the other bracket? A: I think Ace has a higher probability to make the final than Deska since he has decent multitasks and plays aggressively. Q: Okay, so if you had your way, who would be the preferable matchup for the finals? A: I think the final match up will be Scan vs Ace. I've played against Heme many games and he plays so dirty and he really needs to understand TvT. He always tries to finish the game as fast as he can. I also met him at the iCCup Ladder tournament and I wanted to see his TvZ. I played Zerg and omg.. I was like "really?" because I was owning him so badly even though I wasn't playing Terran. And I heard Heme's best matchup is TvZ. I'm feeling bad that I can't play against Kolll in the semifinal because Kolll got eliminated by Heme. Q: Game has announced a new tournament project that is supposed to put ISL to shame, what are your feelings on this? Thoughts? A: It would be great and I'll participate his new tournament. Q: How much do you believe you have progressed since the start of the tournament? A: I believe I have progressed, I practiced a lot since the start of the tournament. I appreciate to Minus)ZerG, Ever)P(Yuka, Mahell, Melody[WHITE], kOkOmi[WHITE], and Minus)Master because they are the people helping me to practice the most for my next match up for ISL. Q: How do you feel about going into a best of 7 TvT? A: Best of 7 TvT is going to be fun, but will be somewhat boring. Q: Any shout outs you'd like to make? A: Censored for EXCESSIVE BM and gloating from Scan. by Eywa ![]() #1 Ladder (123-63) Ro56 - 2-0 ![]() ![]() Bracket - 2-0 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Overall: 14 - 3 // ![]() ![]() + Show Spoiler [Ace, the Sniper Zerg] + Ace is a Hungarian Zerg player and the top qualifier of the ladder round. He has been playing Brood War for the past 8 years and is now part of team sas. Ace was a top 16 finisher in WCG 2008 and a participant in many iCCup tournaments. Ace is now the only remainning player from the top six who had the privilege of picking their groups for the Round of 56. In the group stage, Ace easily took down Jumper and Roman 2-0 each to advance to the next round. In the Round of 32, Ace took on Alfiomerda and moved on with a 2-0 victory in the series. Shauni was his Round of 16 opponent, but Shauni fell to Ace with a score of 1-3, giving Ace his first loss of the tournament. Ace swept his quarterfinal matchup against Jumper dominating it 3-0. Ace has taken the least amount of losses so far in the tournament, although every one of Ace's games have been Zerg versus Protoss. DeSka is the first Zerg he will have to face, and although Ace is favored to win this series, ZvZ can really go either way and Deska flourishes in low economy play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsHA4lVK9w8 + Show Spoiler [Interview] + Q: What were your feelings about ISL when it was originally announced? A: I was really happy because there are not many Brood War tournaments nowadays. I had no reason to play ladder before ISL was annouced, so I got my motivation back. I hope there will be more great tournaments like ISL in the future! ![]() Q: How did you progress through the qualifying ladder section? How difficult was it? Did you ever have think you might not make it? Any other feelings/thoughts? A: I knew I was going to make it because I can play more ladder games than anyone if needed. To qualify in ladder stage wasn't that hard, but to win the first place was. Sziky was a really powerful opponent and I think he's a little better than me. On the last day I needed like 600-700 points to get more points than Sziky, so I played several games against OliveRealSkin, who's a really good korean Protoss. I beat him 5-2 or something like that, that's how I managed to win it. ![]() Q: You were one of the few people who had the privilege of picking your group for the Round of 56. How did you decide who to pick? A: The first thing, when I picked, was to choose some opponents, who I think I would win against. The second thing was to not choose Zerg opponents, because in ZvZ anything can happen. So I chose Jumper, Roman and Dollar. Q: At what point could you see that you would make it this far and do you have any doubts/concerns about your upcoming matches? A: This point was when O saw my bracket for the first time. I saw there were not any players like Sziky, Heme, Ramms or Scan. I think these 4 players have the biggest chance to win against me. My next opponet is DeSka, who's a Zerg player. I think I'm going to win like 4-2, 4-1, but you know, in ZvZ anything can happen. Q: So as far as predictions go, who do you think will make the finals from the other bracket? A: I think if Scan were to play zerg, he would beat Heme in ZvT, but!! In the past weeks I have not seen Scan playing Zerg, so it's going to be TvT. In TvT I think Heme has a little advantage and I think Heme will win, but it's gonna be a close match anyway. Q: Who would you rather face? A: Heme. Q: How much do you believe you have progressed since the start of the tournament? A: I think I've progressed a lot, because I become better in every week by practicing a lot. Q: Deska seems to be pretty well known for being a cheeser, do you think you are prepared for any deviations from standard play that may occur? A: In ZvZ, I don't think he can cheese me, with ling scout and overlord, I think I'm going to be prepared for all cheeses. I'm not going to play different against him than I usually play. The halls of iCCup barren and empty, with only cobwebs and tumbleweeds stirring in the winds? Think again. The AoV iCCup StarLeague has been in full swing for the past 5 weeks and as we're about to plunge headfirst into the Round of 32 - here's TeamLiquid's preview. Sporting an over 1000$ prizepool and a 60 player roster, the AoV iCCup StarLeague is the biggest foreign StarCraft:BroodWar tourney since TSL2. On the 9th of February a Ladderstage kicked off. Over 300 players stormed the last and the top 56 players advanced into the next round. They were divided into 14 groups of 4, duking it out MSL style over the past 3 weeks. The 28 players that advanced were joined by 4 invites, totalling 32 players that are now getting ready for the final haul, starting with the Round of 32. Get out your agendas folks - here's the schedule:
On top of this, replay casts for Ro32, Ro16 and ro8 will all continue Sunday at 19:00 CET / 1:00 EST following the Saturday cast. ![]() As a lot of the more well-known names in BroodWar have made the transition to StarCraft 2, the ISL roster is full with only a handful of well-knowns, a lot of newcomers and a couple of veterans. Here's who to look out for! ![]() Kolll is everyone's favorite pocket-size German Zerg. Hopping onto iCCup at only 12 years old, he managed to get to a B- rank in only the first season and has since gone toe-to-toe with both Bisu and Stork. Kolll is back for ISL. He recently started streaming on TeamLiquid, drawing many eyes. If he gets back into his former shape he'll be a true contender for ISL champion. ![]() Russia is known for being very Terrany. Notable names are Androide, Advokate and Brat_Ok and of the 9 Russians that qualified, 6 are Terrans. During his Round of 56 cast, Ramms was marked by commentators as one of the favourites to win the whole thing, as he destroyed his group 2-0. Ranked #7 outside Korea, he might be the best Terran around. Keep an eye on this guy. ![]() Yayba is one of the more accomplished Protoss players. Throughout the years he continuously performed well in the Polish championships and Polish WCG. He placed first in GosuGamer's Gosucup #7 and was the runner-up of 2009's SC2GGSL. In 2010's WCG world finals he defeated A2, F91 as well as White-Ra. Arguably the best Protoss in this tournament and certainly one of the most accomplished players. Other notable names include Hungarians ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fair enough, Foreigners aren't as good as the top tier Korean players. However, this doesn't mean their play is any less fun. It's safe to say Foreigners have their very own style, setting them apart from the Korean scene. Apart from the copious amounts of drama already enveloping this event, Foreigners seem a lot cheesier. It's almost common to see 2 Gate PvZ, hidden expansions, 8 Rax, slowdrop and the notorious 4 Hatch ZvP. Luckily, Foreigners also excel at the more exotic and creative cheeses (good old 2 Rax Fact TvZ anyone?). With that premise, the Ro56 certainly didn't disappoint. Can we start off with a quick introduction of you as a BroodWar commentor and how you got involved with ISL? Hi Pholon! Well, I'm currently the 'leader' of the ICCup BW TV section, which is to say I'm the only member of it ^^; I got into casting kind of randomly when ICCup needed someone to stream an A/B rank tour a few months ago, and I've been doing ICCup and various other events since then. I got into ISL thanks to LRM)Game, who is of course the organizor of the whole event. I can't remember exactly how it went, but one day he somehow ended up on Skype with me during one of the casts and he thought I did a pretty good job. Next thing I know, "hey Sayle, I'm about to run the biggest BW event since TSL2, wanna cast it?" We know that you cast many games, including ISL, Chronicles of KasPra etc. What was your motivation to become one of the most dedicated BW commentators? I guess a large part is that I'm one of the only ones left. I remember when Klazart, Cholera, and a ton of other commentators regularly did casts of Proleague and stuff. Nowadays, I think there's just a couple of Youtube guys like NuketheStars who still do it, but I'm probably the most active one. I love BW and the BW community, and I feel that the foreign community is a big part of that regardless of how dominant the Koreans are. I think when you boil it down, I'm just the same as any other diehard BW fan, except that I'm actively trying to do something to help instead of just complain on the forums. You're the main caster for ISL. How do you like the organisation of the tournament? For example, how do you like the format (MST into Single Elim) and the choice of maps? Haha, for a second I thought this would be a loaded question about some of the recent 'drama', but you were just talking about the format and stuff. I really like it so far. The ladder stage is nice and reminiscent of TSL. I think MST style groups is also a lot of fun, since it can lend to some interesting intra-group dynamics as we've already seen. Ro32 onwards is pretty standard so no complaints there. I think the biggest issue people have had so far is the map choice. There are some interesting map choices in there, not least of which is of course Hitchhiker. Since I'm not actually playing, I don't have to worry about map balance or practicing on too many maps or anything like that, so from my spectator/caster perspective, having some unusual maps in there makes for some fun games. I can see why players might have some issues with it though. When you look back at the Ro56, were there good games? Were your expectations met? And, perhaps more interestingly, how do you feel foreigners are different from Koreans? Can you describe the foreigner style? Hmm. I think this one depends a lot on someone's definition of a 'good game'. As a caster, any game that has exciting moments like big reaver shots or storms is great. Games with unusual strategies or just clever cheese are also very fun to watch. On the other hand, I have seen some complaints about the overall skill level being somewhat lacking, and this is somewhat valid. To be fair though, you can't really expect Korean progamer level play from these guys anyway, so all things considered, I've been very satisfied with the games so far. As for style, I think foreigners just use a lot more strategies not seen in Proleague. Honestly, I think a lot of the time these might not be the 'optimal' strategies compared to the Korean ones, but the foreigners can get away with it due to the overall mechanics being weaker as well. This means slight deficiencies in certain strategies might not be punished as hard and similarly, certain progamer builds might not even be possible to execute properly. I don't think I can comment on an overall "foreigner style" though since really, every foreigner has their own personal style. We’ve seen some pretty awesome games in the Ro56. What’s your favourite moment so far? Probably the game that *spoiler alert* Joekim lost to Cute, getting him eliminated from the ISL. There are just so many awesome things about that game, not to mention the drama that ensued. I remember seeing the drop going in and thinking HONG JIN HOOOOOOO On the other hand, *spoiler alert* Time's recent game against Casper was quite hilarious as well. Once again, it wasn't just the quality of the game, but also the whole situation that made it awesome. It was especially funny to just feel the disbelief from Casper when he got back in the channel. "What? I lost?" We’re about to head into the Ro32. How are you looking forward to this? What do you expect from the next round? Looking at the brackets, what matches do you think people should definitely watch? Given how many upsets we had in the group stages, I'm even more pumped for the Ro32. I'm especially excited to see how Game does in his match, and I'm sure a lot of people are eager to see how he performs as well. Given that we're going into normal Bo3 style brackets though, I think there's less room for upsets than the group stages, which were all Bo1. On the other hand, the 'lesser' players have for the most part been weeded out, so we can expect higher quality games from now on as well. I'm not too familiar with many of the players, which is why I often get match recommendations from Game, but I'd certainly like to watch Mamom vs Kolll and Shauni vs Fakap-_-, which is a rematch from the group stages. I'd also very much like to see Julia vs Sziky, Cute vs Ramms, and Game vs vAriOus due to the drama/backstory surrounding those games rather than the players themselves necessarily ![]() Any last words/shoutouts? Shoutout to my team rD! Check out our website at reality-defined.com! Shoutout to Game, Joekim, nOoNe, and everyone else helping to make the ISL run as smoothly as possible. Shoutout to Timestop!
