I just installed Windows 8.1 and tried playing Broodwar but I'm having some video issues. Every button has a black box as the background in the middle, instead of being one solid color. And when I click on say "Join" I can only see the game list partially, the other half is obscured. Scoured the forums and Google and couldn't find anyone else having this issue.

Any advice?

From my experience in game it works just fine but the bnet interface is bad unless in window mode and then it will look fine

If you reduce your desktop resolution to 800x600 or 640x480 windows mode = fullscreen basically

I don't have any issue running BW with Win 8.1. I checked the boxes to run it in 640*480 and disable DPI scaling.
However, the mouse behavior is significantly different in Win 8.1 so I kept my old WinXP computer only for BW.

I've fixed the alt tab problem by setting compatibility settings to Vista sp2! (was win98 previously)

If you have nvidia card, you might try going to nvidia control panel. Under Display > Adjust desktop size and position, you can change the scaling to "no scaling" - this will allow you to play in fullscreen with a game size of the original 1x windowed size. I have a 1920x1080 monitor and I play this way. It's basically just an easy way to cover the entire screen in black, then overlay the game screen from windowed in the center of the black screen.
Please PM me with any songs you like that you think I haven't heard before!

Anyone had a completely black screen with windows 8? We got it working randomly, but I have no idea what temporarily fixed it. All I know is most of the time it doesn't work at all. This isn't the colour artifact problem where you either end exlorer.exe or have a black destop and pull up screen resolution. The entire screen was black despite running all the win xp compatability, etc.

Try vista sp2 compatibility, disable display scaling, run in 640x480 resolution. That worked for me. I have had the same problems with other compatibility settings too. It still has some minor problems and I'll try it out with sp1 or something later, but the major problem of having a blank screen is solved.

I don't have that option and I can't disable it with dell graphics setup : /

Hey guys ive been wanting to get back into some rts action so i busted out my starcraft and broodwar so i can beat them down before upgrading to starcraft 2. i have windows 8.1 and the game launches and runs. the color is fine and i can get into campaign and everything but everything is choppy. mouse input in menus is all over the place. if a building is building anything in game the game is choppy. scrolling the map feels choppy too. its basically unplayable like this. Ive been googling for hours and cant seem to get it fixed. Ive seen a few threads on your board and figured maybe you guys know something i dont.

I have a solution that works perfectly for me, even without launchers. Brood War works better than it ever did before.
  • Buy a copy of Windows XP
  • Install VirtualBox
  • Create a Windows XP virtual machine.
  • Run the Windows XP VM in full-screen mode with keyboard/mouse captured.
  • Install Brood War.

You can even get IPX for LAN!

So you need to buy a copy of an outdated OS to just play this one game. Not only that, your computer needs to be able to handle running that second OS and playing SC smoothly. While this could work for some people, it's not ideal.

is anyone else's text fucked up? like if i go to the game menu and i click on different games, the text will overlap. same with trying to view someone's profile in the lobby. if i view, it overlaps the chat boxes and i can no longer see the chat and stuff.

Is Window XP even safe to run? I keep Window XP drive but refuse to enable any network functionality at all due to the discontinued support.

You'll get used to it. I prefer that than the quirks we had with Win7.

No, it is now reserved for adventurers, swashbucklers and daredevils. It is also highly flammable and may cause effects such as delayed metabolic acidosis, blindness, and death.

No it isn't but since you'd be running it in a VM, you have nothing to worry about unless personal/sensitive data is in your VM.

Alright, I'm trying my damnedest to get Brood War functioning adequately on my Windows 8.1 machine. It seems like every solution to one problem requires conceding another. At first the game felt choppy, but running it with the ddemulate flag fixed that. Then I wanted to have working Bnet menus, so I used window mode in Chaoslauncher... but ddemulate doesn't work within the launcher.

Okay... so I can except garbled Bnet menus as long as I can play the actual game, but there's one last problem that I feel like I haven't seen mentioned around here. There is a considerable delay when telling a unit to perform an action. I loaded up the game on an old Windows 7 laptop just to make sure I wasn't imagining things. It's not mouse lag. The game responds to my mouse immediately when it comes to animating the reticle whenever I click somewhere on the terrain, but units have what feels like a full second delay before they react to the command.

Has anyone else encountered this?

How are you launching the game? Are you playing online or single player? Are you playing online versus the computer? Do you have LAN latency enabled?

I tried playing online versus the computer once and it gave me a delay of around 1 second. When you play versus human opponents on the other hand and have LAN latency enabled, it feels amazing.

I am just launching the game normally as administrator with a shortcut using the ddemulate flag at the moment. Full screen, no window mode.

I was playing by myself on Bnet when testing this out this morning, and it did basically feel like latency. Actual game performance was fine, but the delay between my actions and my units' movements felt like latency.

Maybe I need to forward some ports? I remember having to do that on my old Windows 7 laptop, but I haven't done it on my windows 8.1 machine yet. I don't want to use the LAN Latency trick since it's technically a hack.

Battle net always has a lot of delay. Try single player, and when you play for real, play with one of the latency reducing plug ins (for example the anti hack launcher on ICCup)

You don't need to forward your ports for this, it's normal for that slight latency delay. You need to use the LatencyChanger if you want to decrease the built-in latency, yes it is technically a hack however all players in the game must use it or else disconnects will occur, so no one will have an advantage.

No. Just USEast because that's where the last vestiges of the UMS community seem to remain. Does anyone play UMS on the ICCup servers?

I am just launching the game normally as administrator with a shortcut using the ddemulate flag at the moment. Full screen, no window mode.

I was playing by myself on Bnet when testing this out this morning, and it did basically feel like latency. Actual game performance was fine, but the delay between my actions and my units' movements felt like latency.

Maybe I need to forward some ports? I remember having to do that on my old Windows 7 laptop, but I haven't done it on my windows 8.1 machine yet. I don't want to use the LAN Latency trick since it's technically a hack.

Just to make sure... you are playing through the iccup gateway?

No. Just USEast because that's where the last vestiges of the UMS community seem to remain. Does anyone play UMS on the ICCup servers?

Barely, I would recommend US East for UMS. And if you're going to be on US East, I would also recommend using wDetector as an antihack.

Okay. Is it possible to connect to US East through a launcher like mca64? Looks like I can only connect to either ICC or Fish through it.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured out how.
