This small guide was compiled by sMi.Silent and sMi.Frozen. I thought that some of you may be interested in seeing it and that it may help you out a bit =p I wasn't sure where to put this topic, but this seems like the most appropriate section to put it in. Well, here ya go ^^

"For those of you who want so badly to be me (I know, I know, it's hard not to) and are trying to learn some Korean, here is a shoddy list I have compiled. It's not very clear or very complete or even entirely accurate... feel free to say what's wrong with any of it :D

I also recommend http://www.zkorean.com for their translator (of single words) and to read through their grammar section, though that and this together will likely only confuse the hell out of you.

The list below is a bit more indepth and tells you what keys on your keyboard you need to press in order to get the desired phrase out.

I'm just learning it, because I have some korean friends, and they have hard time talking to me in english, so I want to try Hangul as a new language aswel. .

omg you're, like, totally wasting your time learning another language... Really, who needs any language other than English?

Awesome! I'm sure the community can use this!

My advice:

Just let people be. Why pick on people for learning a different language? Who does that make look bad? The person who spent 10+ minutes making a quality post, or the person who spent 20 seconds typing out "why learn Korean? It's useless?"

In WWII, the American soldiers could have said "OMG, why learn this Navajo crap? Who uses it?" But it turned out that it was one of their deadliest weapons.

Again, just my advice.

Is there really any harm in further educating yourself? NO

Uhh, you go through your control panel and do a bunch of stuff. I got Chinese to work on my computer (so I can type Chinese now), so I'd assume it's the same with Korean. I don't remember the exact procedure, but whatever.

I have a question regarding the Smi recruiting policy: Don't you have any standards of etiquette for members? That smi.frozen guy was cursing and whining and throwing a temper tantrum like a little baby when I beat him, and I didn't say a SINGLE thing to him. In fact, I was going to play someone, who had me join his game and then out of nowhere Smi.frozen joins, the guy I was going to play says "NVM PLAY FROZEN" and I have to play frozen instead. I beat him and he goes fucking apeshit. Ijust thought smi had higher standards.

Actually the two sMis that I've played (beaten me badly both of them ) were both manner. And talkative.

I'm not asking about ME being recruited. The guy I was GOING to play was not in smi. I'm talking about why they recruited YOU. Please read what I wrote. I have no interest at all in being in smi.

and hahaha at this PM I just got from you:

who the fuck are you?
give me the rep/text/akas of my friend/aka of you
and i might remember that i really did bm you.

or else shut the fuck up

There is no need bringing up issues you have with one of my members on a thread that was made to help those who are interested in learning a bit of Korean.

To those of you who think this thread is pointless, or learning a bit of the language then please don't even bother posting in the topic. If its so stupid or idiotic to try to further educate yourself and you don't want to read the thread then don't even bother opening it.

You can't type Korean in battle.net? Do you have your regional setting set to Korea?

I just changed it to Korea. But I don't know what to do in Battle.net. I press Alt+Shift which changes it to Korean. But when I type it is still English. =\

I did the same thing. I set Korean to Alt+Shift+0 and I use it in Battle.net but it still comes out in English.

But when I change it to Korean text outside of Broodwar, I have to click on the 'A' on the language bar menu. When 'A' changes to '가' then I know I can type in Korean.

Topic got derailed by off-topicism, so:
here are my contributions to the word list, original then my comment in brackets.

Advance = 조이기 (I think thats more like a containing advance, 전진 would be more accurate)
Conference = 대회 (that's competition, 회의 would be conference)
Dedicate = 반납 (that's 'to return', 봉납 or 바치다 seems more accurate)
Delusion = 환각 (착각 as in mistakenness might be better for ease of understanding)
Favor = 호의 (that's right as in the verb 'to favor', but as a noun (i.e. request) 요청/요구 is correct).
Impossible = 설마 (설마 means a concept which I can't explain in English, similar to Japanese 'masaka'. 불가능 is correct here)
Joining = 가입희망자 (that's 'one who wishes to join', a noun)
Live = 사싲 (???? 살다 would be 'to live')
Many = 들 (would work as a suffix after a noun, but 많다 'lots' is probably better)
No Chance = 암울 (works when describing a situation in a game, but literally means 'gloomy')
Proud = 자만하는 (that's like more like boasting, or conceit. 자존심 would be pride)
Recent Condition = 근황 (lol, gosu)
Search = 수색 (good, but 찾다 as a verb would be recommended. For the concept of scouting in game, 서치 or 정찰)
Spelling = 쉬워 (?? the Korean there means easy. 스펠링 is correct here)
Stomach = 위염 (uh, that means stomach ulcer, 위 would be enough)

Of course many of the words still sound dodgy for various reasons, such as some being in verb form, adjective form, in a fixed tense, but it's good enough for basic communication.

Those words are taken straight out of zKorean... It's way too formal for small BW talk on b.net.

Probably some stuff you'll see more often:

안녕 (Annyeong) = hihi
수고 (Sugo) = No real translation but it's kind of saying thanks for playing with me, or thanks for going through the trouble.
살살 (Salsal) = Easy, or go easy on me.
ㄱㄱ (R R) = It basically means gogo
지지, ㅎㅎ (Jiji, gg) = GG
시작 (Shijak) = Start
초보 (Chobo) = Noob
고수 (Gosu) = Pro
초고수 (Chogosu) = Almost pro

Map names:
로템 (Lotem) = Lost Temple
루나 (Luna) = Luna
라이드(업으발커리) (Raideu) = Ride of Valkyries
라쉬아워 (Raswi-awo) = Rush Hour
헌터 (Heonteo) = Hunters or BGH
Do your best, God will do the rest.

When you have it set to Korean with alt+Shift, you must press the alt on the right side of the keyboard to switch between Korean and english. You'll also notice that the ctrl on the right won't work when you're in Korean language, cause it makes stars and shapes and stuff instead (Korean text has stars and all that, you know?)

Chogosu means kind of "nearly pro," not "really pro." It's like prefix, you can say chochobo if you want...I think.

Alt+Shift changes the IME (Input Method Editor).

When in Battle.net

1. Press Alt+Shift
2. Press RIGHT Alt once.

Type wlwl.

If it doesn't show up as 지지, you need to install the Korean IME. Go to Bard's Displaying Korean guide

That's incorrect, the cho is the Chinese character 超: which means over, superior etc. The chobo on the other hand is 初 which means first, beginning.

Can someone confirm this? A friend of mine told me that is what it means, "cho." I don't know if it's same as Chinese either...I know that it means that in Chinese, I speak Chinese, but I am also fluent in Japanese and I know that many kanji are different from their Chinese meaning or have subtle differences, ex. the difference between "to sit" and "chair."

some of Korean words is came from chinese letter ( only meaning ), HOWEVER we use totally different pronounciation and alphabet for those.

Cho is not a word, it only works with certain words like gosu/hasu. It means like 'hella'. I would say cho is more like 'slang'.

I didn't type this guide and I know that it is in the search. I also realise that somewhere in the post someone couldn't have pasted the link for this guide.
======================================================================

Here is my list for those without korean fonts..
Koreans pretty much use short version of English phrases for build ups and strategies...
I really don't think you need to use much Korean to play with Koreans as teammates..

Strategies

* Fast dragoon

* Fast zealot

* One fac double (one factory double command)

* 2 fac (2 factories)

* 3 centi drop (3 cm drop, dropping your units in enemys' base only travelling a short distance i.e without overlord speed upgrade)

* 4 drone (4 drone spawning rush)

* 8 barrack

* 9 over pool (9 drone - overlord - spawning pool)

* BBS, BSB (barrack - barrack - supply, barrack - supply - barrack)

* FD terran (fake double command, usually consists of attacking your enemy really early on with 1~2 tank + 5~7 marines making them think you're playing agressively when you're actually expanding)

* SK terran (It's a strategy usually consists of numerous M&M, loads of Science vessels and little or no mechanic units)

* Gas rush

* Gong up, Bang up (Gong up means attack upgrade, Bang up means defense upgrade so if you say gong 2up bang 3up, it means your upgrade status is 2,3 respectively. for shield upgrade you just say shield upgrade)

* Bal up (speed upgrade, i.e zerglings, hydra, zealots)

* Ggot bat cannon or sunken (when you or enemy has excessive cannon/sunken defense line) Ggot bat literally means flower garden.

* Gu reum Ssa be or Gu reum science vessel (literally means Science Vessel cloud, which means loads of them)

* Nak ha san drop (It literally means parachute drop, which means you don't drop your units all at one at one place but rather one by one at different places strategically)

* Detecting = same

* Ddang Hyrda (It means pure hydras without lurks or zerglings)

* River dae bak ( Dae bak means spectacular so you say it when River is able to kill loads of enemy units) Same applies for mine, I.e. Mine dae bak

* Mine yuk dae bak (You say it when mines kill lots of their own units instead)

* Mak multi (it's when you expand like there's no tommorow)

* Manner pylon (if you don't know what it is, then quit sc)

* Mechanic

* Mok dong zerg (it literally means shepherd or cowboy zerg, usually consists of millions of zerglings + ultralisks)

* Molae multi (when you expand secretively or in unexpected places, Molae = without knowing, Multi = expansion Koreans don't say expansion)

* Molae gun mool (when you build buildings in unexpected places)

* Bionic
* Bakanic (Bionic + mechanic, M&M + mechanic units)
* Burrow
* Bunkering
* Sunken Rush

* Sok up (speed upgrade, but usually applies to shuttle, overlord and vulture)

* Soo song up (Overlord transportation upgrade)

* Yang dong Jak jun (It means when you're multi attacking, i,e overlord drop as well as attacking from the main)

* Jung Chal (Scout)

* Soon hwae gong yun (Instead of guerilla harrassing with small amount of units, it's when you take down your enemys' expansion one by one in full force it literally means round tour or road show)

* Yuk rush (it's when your enemy rushes you but fails and you attack them back immediately)

* il Koon bibigi (It's sor of like a bug, It literally means workers rub, you say it when your workers go through mineral lines using mineral click - move command)

* il jum sa (It's when you aim attack particular unit with several units of yours to kill them off individually instead of randomly hitting other units)

* Jun jin (it means proxy, so you say jun jin gate, junjin barrack etc)

* Ji woo gae (it means eraser, usually harrassing drones with your science vessesls eradiated)

* Jil tem (zealot + templar)

* Chun ji storm (it means heaven and earth storm, you can do it if you spread your templars right and use storm aimed at one particular spot. It has huge range)

* Cheese rush

* Turret sin gong (when you mass build turrets it literally means devine turrets)

* Fast dark
* Fast carrier

* Pok tan drop (it literally means drop bomb so you say it when you mass drop)

* Hardcore zealot rush

* Hydra wave (when you mass hydra)

* Han bang rush = wait for the timing then gather all macro and strike upon your enemy

Here are some extras

Manner = same
Sugo = good effort/good job
12 si = 12'o clock direction (as in position)
Chi sa = disgraceful, shameful (When your opponent 4 drones you say chisa)
Sa rang hae = I love you
Nimi = your mum
Jungmal? = really?
Good Night - Jar Ja sea yo

It took me ages so I hope you find it helpful..

Okay so here goes. I'm assuming you already have Korean installed on the computer.

1. Leave it in English mode.
2. Start BW and go onto Battle.net
3. Alt+Shift
4. PRESS THE RIGHT ALT ONCE
5. Type Korean
6. Press the right alt again to change back to English.
Do your best, God will do the rest.

Wow, lots of people dedicated to translating random definitions. If anyone wants to know what a particular word means, or wants me to translate, just hollar. (send me a PM) and I'd be glad to help.

@the original poster: nice effort, but one thing: there's a lot of ambiguous words in Korean and you seemed to have touched upon quite a few of them. I think what M7Excellence has in his reply is a very effective way to learn SC related korean.

Okay so here goes. I'm assuming you already have Korean installed on the computer.

1. Leave it in English mode.
2. Start BW and go onto Battle.net
3. Alt+Shift
4. PRESS THE RIGHT ALT ONCE
5. Type Korean
6. Press the right alt again to change back to English.

At the alt+shift step, is that left alt+shift or it doesn't matter? After you've done the alt+shift once you don't need to do it again for the duration that bw is open so that you can jsut keep pressing the right alt to switch between them?

Nvm this works perfectly. Cool stuff ^^

Edit: How do you switch it in normal programs outside of sc? I can't get it to switch to korean outside of sc but inside of sc its working.

Edit2: Nvm I'm a retard you can't type korean in trillian lol

Eck more problems T_T I use a keyboard that has a united kingdom layout. I set the settings so that left alt + shift chnages the input language, but it ends up changing the keyboard layout as well which I don't want. Like usually when its in normal english mode and I type shift + 2 it gives me " but when I go left alt + shift then type shift + 2 it gives me @ which I don't want. How do I stop it from changing the keyboard layout when switching between inpuit languages?

Could someone also explain what the options are for the Korean IME input system thing?

If it doesn't show up as 지지, you need to install the Korean IME. Go to Bard's Displaying Korean guide

this is kind of just a side question but

sometimes when im playing, i will switch korean to english or vis versa and all of my keys will be hotkeys

like the game will start and i will press S for scv, and it will bring up some menu thing (im guessing its something like alt+s)
it gets pretty annoying because i have to reload starcraft and explain why i left the game ~_~;;

does anyone know the problem?

Well to say i'm a foreigner is "저 외국인이에요" = wj dhlrnrdlsdldpdy which might come in handy
for "I don't speak Korean" = 저 한국말 못해요 = wj gksrnrakf ahtgody
for "English plz" = "영어로 대화해요" = duddjfh eoghkgody seems about right. somebody with better korean might want to change this

Gonna bump thread for this pic, should be pretty useful. There's a few less common styles on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout as well.

difficult thing for me (as a korean learner) is, that most people on battle.net use so much slang that even if you have decent conversational skill in the real world, you don't understand much on b.net.
the many shortened and slang forms and also thestrange use of honorific forms are sometimes confusing.

dunno if this has been said but my contribution is:

낚시 - (nagg shi) - skrrtl = quickly leaving and rejoining the game for the purpose of getting more players (originally means fishing)

i see that quite often
