Yahoo offers us a free e-mail service, but they're dwarfed by Google's new and improved Gmail; providing not only a free service, but even more functionality and convenience. Simple layouts, easy to work with. Not sure how this is relevant to what I posted. There's a clear and definite benefit mYm gets for the 'free' videos they release. They get publicity, and ultimately more exposure for their sponsors (ie. more money). I'll repeat: "After all, it's a sin to promote one's website and to try to get something in return for one's own hard work. We should all selflessly give to the community because we know everyone is going to selflessly give themselves." Sift through the sarcasm and realize that them deriving a benefit is not only reasonable but should be expected. The community is consists mostly of those who take and never give, those who give deserve to get something in return for what they do. If their sole purpose were to truly cater to the community and give us 'free stuff,' then there's no need to make us register in the first place now is there. My point is this: Go ahead, make us register to download the movie. But the community is going to take the shortest and quickest route possible -- I've noticed the movie is already up on the Torrent tracker. In fact, it's probably MORE beneficial for mYm to just not make us register and appease us of the inconvenience. It's obviously caused enough of a stir to lead to a 7 page thread about it. Once again, it's not the end of the world, but registering is a nuisance nonetheless. People are going to take the quickest route, and if a company is willing to cater to that rather than putting us through an inconvenience, people would actually be more appreciative towards mYm. Once again, look at Google - they've flourished through word of mouth and keeping people content. What I'm saying is sure, go ahead and ask us to register. But perhaps it'd be MORE effective towards your reputation if we didn't have to. It's a matter of the ultimate benefit of the company, in this case mYm. The part I disagree with is that what mYm did with this video offering should reflect negatively upon their reputation in the first place. The only people who see this as a bad thing are the ungrateful idiots who shouldn't be benefiting from their work in the first place. "More appreciative" and "more effective" are above and beyond what people who are getting free quality content should be demanding or expecting, again with all this entitlement. I take it you have ample experience in debating. I always start off reading your arguments with the utmost respect, until you go off saying something irrational like this. Call me ungrateful; I'd say that's a fair statement to make. But didn't I just say I went ahead and registered to the site? I explicitly said I appreciate Draco enough to bite the bullet (and a *SARCASM* mighty large one at that!) and register. Calm down, I'm not some grabby "gimme gimme gimme" kid asking to eat the cake too. I'm simply playing devil's advocate, considering how my actions obviously oppose my argument, and offering an alternative route for mYm's publicity to take. First of all, your registering has nothing to do with your respect for Draco. He didn't make the video, and I doubt he cares in the slightest whether people watch it or not. You registered because you're a bit more reasonable than the other people who thought registration was a price too high to pay. Secondly, the fact that you ultimately registered and are only playing devil's advocate doesn't make your arguments/opinions any better or worse. You still have said nothing as to why the general community has any right to expect more than what mYm gave them, aside from saying it'd be "better" for them if they just made it as easy as possible for people to freeload off of them while giving nothing in return. Again, your argument is premised entirely upon the idea that the general community somehow deserves, should expect, and is entitled to making people who contribute to the community their bitches. Oh, and by the way, I have every right to declare how free stuff is given to me - it's my choice to accept it. If it weren't up to me, as you claim it shouldn't be, then my wallet would be filled with about 1500 credit cards. What you're talking about isn't HOW free stuff is given to you, but what you're doing with it (accept or decline). You indeed should have no reasonable expectation that you should dictate the circumstances under which you receive such content, particulary when you have done NOTHING to deserve it. Your credit card analogy makes no sense in this context, it'd be more accurate to analogize it to people on welfare complaining about how the gov't makes them fill out so many forms to get their checks (although even this one isn't ideal). You're getting free services while doing nothing to earn them. The only reason the community is getting such content is because some people who have better access and skills are willing to share it with the rest of the community, not because it's some duty or obligation. Not only should you not expect to eat the cake, you should be happy to get any part of what the kitchen offers. | ||
