heh the thread "celebrating 8 years of balanced gameplay" refreshed my memories such as my first ever sc game and my first bnet game
the first 2 sc bnet games i played, the map was LT. i had only 12 scvs the entire game and didnt expo at all, by the time i had a army of marines/firebats/vults/tanks numbering less than 15, i was attacked by mass goons and mass zlots, he let me go after he owned half of my base(i didnt even know u could quit a game that time), he returned to my base with 12 carriers T_T. so i thought to myself, protoss are cool so the next game, i chose protoss and by the time i had 15 zlots, 10 goons, and 12 probes, i got owned by mass goons+reavs T_T
post ur stories of ur first bnet games =)

i remember it was some version of fastest. This was in late 98. I was terran and he was toss, and i remember having like 12 rines, 8 wraiths, and 2 tanks. I send a rine to his base and see 10 gateways pumping goons and im like " holy shit he is good."
So yea, i learned to macro shortly after with many a BGH game^_^

It was a 2v2 on some blizzard map. I was protoss, made quite a bit of zealots and actually did fundamentally okay for my first b.net game ever...but we still lost.

First Game: 3v1 computer on Bloodbath for fast 2 minute melee wins.
First One v One: Random guy in a public channel. I begged him to allow me to win for free ladder points. We worked out an arrangement where he made a smurf account, I rushed him 20 times in 2min, then I returned the favor. I was mortified when Blizzard erased my statistics.

Hehe. My very first game was in a LAN-game against a friend of mine and I played terran against protoss and I hadn't even played the campaign yet, while he already had completed it (got SC like a week or two before me when it was released.) I only went marines and macroed like a whore and was almost able to run him over even though he had reavers. I was leading after the early game and was close to winning but reavers for my opponent turned the tide (I didn't know the tech tree and had to learn production hotkeys as I played :D). I got tanks too late to get back into the game so... I guess I learned that tech units were more powerful than in WC2 the hard way so to speak. This was on plains of snow or whatever it was called. The SC version map of one we used to play in school 4v4 at WC2.
I don't remember my very first SC-game on the internet, but it must have been like a month later. I played very much with a macro-approach so I probably just ran over my opponent with zealots and goons. (played WC and WC2 before that, but only on LAN in school.)

3v3 with some random pubbies on bgh hunters. We all picked protoss, and basically just destroyed everything with mass zeal-only raids. We continued to laugh at our victims re our games and have fun, until we met some guy who actually decided to pick terran vs 3 protosses and we were like "lol you noob protoss > terran eZ". Long story short, we got our asses owned 1v3 by vultures/tanks/nukes -_-. Think I still have that replay hanging around somewhere in my collection too

I believe my friend and I were playing FFA Bloodbath games on west on 56k modem -___-;;
I was so afraid of clicking that "Ladder" button, i never ever played a single ladder game... this was not even BW, but SC on its first patch or w/e.
come to think of it, i still havent played a ladder game on original bnet lol

it was a 1v1 on a fastest map, and i was first learning the game, learning the shortcut keys,builds armies and he massed carriers and attacked me, at first i saw them i was like WTF ARE THOSE BIG SHIPS? WTF LITTLE SHIPS ARE COMING OUT OF THE BIG SHIPS AND ATTACKING ME...i then thought protoss was the strongest race but later realised how balanced the game is and played terran huk;;

Back then I didn't even know that I was supposed to make extra workers in order to increase the rate of the income. So by the time my opponent was getting a group of BattleCruiers, all I had was a bunker and a marine. GG..

First B.net would've been a 2v2 comps on some random blizzard map, chosen by the leader of the clan I had just joined. I was Protoss and built cannons and had a single zealot when my main was destroyed. I made a pylon in his base and proceeded to be amazed as he used M&M to win against them both.
First against other people was a 2v2 in that same clan. I was Terran, and "rushed" (Wasn't exactly that fast then) to tank drops. Main was destroyed, but I had a ton of resources still left. I lifted off and hid my building until the nasty lings went away, then rebuilt. I actually ended up winning my team the game, and upon seeing the replay, was dubbed the "surviving hero".
First one on one was on a random blizzard map against the same clan leader, about half a year later. I won by dropping tanks on the cliff (which had no ramps going up to it) directly behind his main mineral line, and then lifting off all of my buildings when he attacked with his five zealots. I did not understand the extreme imbalance in this and thought I'd accomplished something!
Needless to say, the entire clan was not skilled in general, but we were all good friends and had fun, which I think is more important.

My first game was at my friends house when SC JUST came out, literally 2-3 days afterwards. I remember thinking zerg were so weird because they looked like pulsating brains when their buildings built. I don't really remember the game itself though.

First EVER game on starcraft original, I remembered I was zerg(cuz I can't speak english then and didn't know I should finish the terran campaign first... anyways I remembered I thought overlords can actually attack and tried to killl his wraith w/ it, it was reallyfun. And since I can't read english I didn't know I'm suppose to make more overlords :D First 1v1 was against ZidaneTribal, this was what, 5 years later I think... it was 1v1 on a super small map, 3 kingdoms, I still remember the tag of that map: Once upon a time there were 3 kingdoms, may there be one. Anyways I was protoss and he was zerg, He expanded twice and I didn't expand at all, made 1 carrier but his hydras shot down all my interceptors. It was GG from there and he plaged all my stuff and i thought wow that was kewl! Then the next game he was terran, I was still protoss, he attacked with 3 tanks and I tried to maelstrom his tanks and he laughed hysterically and I lost T_T
was fun though!

TvT on bgh. i was at 12, he was at 8. we blocked our entrances with supply depots. i had 25-30 scvs, building BC from two starports. after one whole hour, i got 12 wraiths and 12 BC, and launched the fleet. he spent more money into bunker and turrets. so i outnumbered his air 2:1 and i owned. woo hoo! oh man 1-0-0 record and i had a star next to my name. A STAR! omg what a great gg

A real life friend talked me into buying SC three days after he brought it.. Our first game was TvT on Challenger (weird north/south map with two center island expos). We had about 2 days practice under our belts.
Neither of us attacked the first 30 minutes at least.. Ironically enough, we both went one base mass battle cruiser and had a HUGE air battle in the center of the map. No expos, one starport apiece, just 10-15 scv's, a bunch of cruisers and the instuction booklet sitting open on my desk.
I still have the replay.. And BWChart shows my NaDa-like 16apm for the 45 minute game ><

I feel sad, not able to remember my first ever game...
But sdG)Sakura-JAP converted me to a hardcore Terran player by showing me the magic of Boxer. He proceeded to drill integrity into my games (absolutely no maphacking allowed in the sacred melee games), and taught me everything I know about StarCraft. I feel that this was my true first game, as I was pretty much learning all over again.
"Learn the basics. Isn't that what you use every day?" - Gattsu (Berserk)
You can read my experiences with this great man here.
Nowadays, I don't often play StarCraft because the vast majority of my friends quit. Instead, I try to pass on what I've learned and apply the same concepts to the other games we play.
Thus, I absolutely pwn at DotA, a wc3 map I've been on after high school with an extremely high win %. I've concluded that it's also the sole reason for wc3's existence/success/fun. I would not play WarCraft for it's melee; Have you ever seen a pro orc vs orc matchup? Very, very, VERY long and boring.
I wish everyone would get back to StarCraft again. Guess I'll start the nagging and bring it up wherever and whenever. I often do load up the micro & training maps and secretly practice to prevent my SC sense from becoming too dull.
Edit: My micro seems to be consistent @ 120 APM these days! w00t! 2nd Edit: I used to play zerg. Something about them just appeals to unskilled koreans I guess.

Shareware june/july 1998 TvT (obviously) on the only map you could play - byway. The guy used 3 pauses each for 2-3 minutes each time cos his girlfriend was over (or so he said). I actually lost 3 bc's to cloaked ghosts which cost me the game at the end - i was like WTF hidden fire!
|
I don't remember it was so long ago
|
ha, i was pro right at the start, played lan zvp, and i 4 pooled Obiviously i ran over. (even after searching for the base for quite a time.. it was LT and i had no idea where opponent could start)
Next game he said it is unfair, so i used somesort of 6hatchery 8pool and got raped by masses of zealots.
i have never really won anything unless you count the 4-6pool rushes.

My first LAN game was terran vs protoss on some 2 player map with a raised ground in the middle, I had played only the signle player missions for terrans and was masssing my favorite unit - tanks(I also counted my scvs and had exactly 2 scvs per mineral patch and 3 on the gas, funny times). He was massing goons and decided to attack the ramp leading to the raised middle ground, where I had all my tanks sieged, so in the end he lost every single goon and killed 2 tanks and I just unsieged and attack moved to his base. I felt really good and it was fun I really can't remember my first bnet game, probably because I played a lot on lan before that and it wasn't as exiciting.

Hahaha I'm sure all you guys are lying, when me and my friends got SC for the first time it was all about BCs vs Carriers. We used to have arguments during lunchtime about which would win. The only thing we all agreed upon was that Zerg was a crappy race.
My first 'multiplayer' game was modem to modem thing. I got schooled by my friend as i was teching to carriers while he went mass hydras and owned my ass.
Then I progressed to bgh on bnet, where i learnt the secret of extra fast lurker drop at their nexus/hatch/cc. I won about 50% of my games that way, it was kinda a 'do or die' thing haha. I actually got some newbies to think that i was gosu until they figured out my trick and stuck some cannons there. I had to go back to my carrier tactic after that =(.
My most fun experience in SC probably ever was early on when everyone in my group of friends were playing, and me and my school friends could get an 4v4 BGH games goin' withing our group. There was a lot of trash talking, laughing at my slowest friend (i swear, i had my 5th worker out before all his workers started mining) and my selfish friend, who went all defense all the time. Carrier wars, nukes, infested CC's, everything was fair game. It usually ended with the 2 koreans (who weren't allowed on the same teams) duking it out while we flew out CC's, probes or watever to annoy them. Ahhh good times. Everyone cept for me has grown out of SC now, playing online poker or WoW. Gayed.
