No idea what is wrong with you. This thread is obviously populated with people that play(ed) and enjoy(ed) Bw. Some even come from playing SC2. However thousands of SC2 players will never know how great of a game Bw is. I think it's fine to pity them.
Also, I've been on TL close to ten years now. I'm sure I don't need you to tell me about board functions.

BW was great fun. Play it have some fun, but remember that things are moving on now. We have a better BW now so come back to sc2 soon! See you there!

This thread is actually pretty helpful. I've played a couple of games vs AI, but I've always wanted to try some real BW games. The BW mod in SC2 just isn't as satisfying. That said, I downloaded the ICCup launcher (from the anti-hack link), the starcraft.zip, color_fixes.reg, and the latest map pack from the ICCup site. Do I need to do anything else (such as moving files from the map pack folder into the starcraft folder)?

If you follow this ICCup guide you should be able to play.

SC2 and BW are completely different games. Calling SC2 a "better BW" is absurd when BW is probably the greatest RTS ever made.

If people can't join your games, go to http://portforward.com/ and pick your router mark/model on the left, then choose StarCraft: Broodwar (or it's maybe just starcraft) and follow the instructions.
When playing ladder games, set the speed on "fastest", game mode on "one on one". When playing friendly games, use the "melee" game mode (or Use map settings if you're using an obs map). For 2v2 use "Top vs bottom" game mode.
Name the games like 1v1 <rank> <map name>: "1v1 D Fighting Spirit" (or "1v1 D FS" for short) you can list more ranks, "1v1 D-/D Python".
When joining games, the colored bars next to the game indicate the ping/latency to that game, so you should avoid 5 red bars, and mostly go for 1-2 green bars. As someone said, when people say xyz/1 or xyz//1 they want you to join the private game with the name xyz and 1 is the password.
If it lags in game, you can increase the latency of the game so it stutters less (but then units take more time to respond to/do the commands) by going F10, o, n (I know the shortcuts but not the names LOL) and choosing first High latency, if that doesn't work well just quit or try Extra high latency (altho most people will leave if you do this as it's really detrimental to micro and gameplay). If you see LAN Lat off at the start of the game I'd recommend leaving as that player has turned off the option to reduce the latency or doesn't have the antihack launcher running (also visible by AH off msg). Also recommend leaving if there's a player with AH off.
You can use /motw to see the maps that give extra points that week, some weeks have popular maps, some not. In the not popular weeks you can use Fighting Spirit as it's the most played map.
You can /f add <name> or /f a <name> to add people to your friends list. /f remove <name> or /f r <name> to remove them. To send messages to people on the friend list use /f m <message>. To see people on the list you can click the Friends button or write /f l. To see just the people that are online use /f o. If you're in a clan you can use /c m <message>, /c l and /c o, /c off/on (to turn clan messages off/on). To msg people that aren't on the fl use /w <name> <msg>. To replay to the last guy who messaged you use /r <message>. There's also /time, /stats, /stats <name>, /ah (in lobby or game) to see if people have antihack on. /clearstats YES to reset stats once per 2 weeks, /transfer <name> to transfer stats to the <name> account. /ignore <name> to mute someone. /dnd <message> to turn off private messages (whispers, and friends' messages in game). To join channels use /j <channel name> or /join <channel name> or click the Channels button and type it there. There are a bunch of other useful commands but you'll learn them as you go on. You can double click peoples' name to see stats/points and profile, or your own to edit profile. "op teamliquid" is a good channel, I think there's "op sgs" too for low level players.
I'd recommend joining the sGs clan and then getting them to add you in their skype chat so you can get games vs low level players easily.
Also ranks are basically E (CPU), D-, D, D+, C-, C, C+, B-, B, B+, A-, A, A+, Olympic. Most of the ranks have 1k points between them, except the top four and bottom two ranks. (Details.) You usually get 100 points for a win on a non motw (map of the week) map when playing a player of the same rank, and 130 when playing on a motw map with ah on (antihack on). The number of points you lose depends on the rank you're at, but at D it's -50, higher ranks lose more. When you win vs a higher rank you get more points, when winning against lower rank you get less, for losing it's the opposite.
I know I forgot something important, but if I remember I'll write it later.

Thanks for all the help. I tried to get into a game, but the only person who responded was someone from California who I couldn't connect to because of latency. Aren't there supposed to be tons of people who play big game hunters or something? I've always heard of that map, but I've not seen any games on it, I figure that would be a good place to familiarize myself.

sorry, i was addressing the poster right above you (in this thread) and i thought that was obvious, so i mentioned it the way i did in my post.
and... i was talking that way because to me, you were using 'oblivious' as a negative connotation for---as in what you mentioned in your post just now--pity... i was also comparing and putting into perspective how 70%+ of the world isn't aware of starcraft or how good of a game it is,.. to those tens of thousands of sc2 players who don't appreciate the game.
there are plenty of arguments or whatever for that whole sc1 VS sc2 stuff going on. it's not hard to see that i dislike it when it's pretty unecessary. my point point was: give it a break... and i'm not trying to give you a lecture or whatever from what i say from here, but much of what the community has to say about that whole debate is that they are two different games, two different beasts. ---same goes for any gamer out there who doesn't appreciate star1 in the slightest, and enjoy their own hobbies perfectly fine. they either could not, or would not enjoy the game as we do. i don't agree with any sort of pity (except purely comedy) because the fact is, many people pity *us* starcraft \-gamers for our interest in this game.

You look at BW, and all you are able to see are the graphic and the limitation, BW is not that

Yea there should be Hunters and BGH games all the time. You have to set the game mode on top vs bottom to see them.

SC2 even has destructible rocks.
Jokes aside, the guy must be pretty lucky to get away with a temp. Playing SC2 is one thing, trashing BW is another.

What about the aspect ratio problem? I haven't done any research but I'd love to get it back to 4:3 like it's supposed to be.

I'm seriously having so much fun playing this game right now. I feel like I'm actually decent considering I've only played like ten games total. Can anyone tell me a good hotkey setup for terran? Right now im just using location hotkeys for all my bases and I'm using 8 to take me to my production. I set 9 and 0 to the comsats on my first two bases.
I have 1-7 designated for units, especially when I'm going marine medic, but I usually just get so frustrated trying to set up the control groups that i just end up boxing and clicking on the minimap. Is there some trick to setting up the control groups for units that I don't know about?
|
I've just been doing mostly clicking, I can 1a2a3a when I have a larger force.
That said, I can only say that for the one game I played. Poking through the ICCup channels, I learned that I'm not actually allowed to play unless I'm at least a Korean A- with 2 OSL wins and a girlfriend. Therefore I was instructed to delete and/or uninstall.
Is there a practice group channel or something? For how much people like to hate on SC2 and say that their game is better, they aren't very welcoming to people learning BW :/

Anyone else think we should have a sticky compiling all the info we have on getting new players started?
|
Yeah, I was wondering, a good "New player's guide to BW" thread with plenty of copypasta would be pretty helpful. If anything, it would cut down on question threads, I would think.

Someone should teach the guy Shift + F2 for screen hotkeys.
Basically if you are playing Terran, your production facilities shall be clumped up in one pile. You click on the middle facility and then you press Shift + F2 to take a screenshot of that location. So while you go into the battles with your unit, once your money gets high, you press F2 to go back to your Factories/Barracks and whatnot, quickly click on every single one of them and produce the appropriate units from them. Immediately go back to your unit afterward. If you do this more and more often, your macro won't skip a beat and the entire game just flows smoother.

go /op TL on ICCup, there are usually around 20 guys there.
OR TL search sGs Clan for beginners. I only hear good things about them.
The route of BW is somewhat simple.
start at sGs, then move on to C Rank, there join a famous Clan from Gambit Cup, practice your butt off with them until you reach B level. Then download Fish and practice against the Koreans. You should be able to get into A rank from there.

You are so right about this. I tried playing a 2v2, and my teammate was just telling me how bad I was the entire game. I ended up getting the highest score, which really confused me considering it was like my 3rd game ever. Is there a way to add friends in bw? If there is, we should add each other and play some games. It' so hard to find people that are willing to play someone that just started.
