I'm curious if anyone's got suggestions for Protoss hotkeys and camera positions because the probe and pylon being on P makes them a bitch for me to transfer over the same from sc2. So has anyone got good suggestions of hotkey setups throughout the early, mid and lategame? And I know some of it will always preference. nexus on 0 and 9 (and stargate/robo on 7/8). For building a pylon, after a while you'll be able to hit P fast without looking at the keyboard. Other races have this far away hotkeys too (f.e. Overlord on O) early game you can use the f-keys at your nexus to be able to transfer probes quickly against harass, if you have lots of gates you can also camera position there for macro.

KuKri, do you mean if you can't add them all on the same hotkey or just shift add them at all? Because no there is no MBS and no you can't see your hotkeys but you can add them via shift+# like in sc2.
Darneck: Popular hotkeys would be to be have your first nexus on whatever hotkey is comfortable for you. Some foreigners did the 0p9p8p but most koreans have the first nexus on like 4 and then just press the F-keys and makes probes by clicking on the other nexies. And then when you start coming up in bases you just hotkey all your gateways on the hotkeys you don't have army on. Protoss hotkeying/mechanics are pretty simple in BW.
Also a tip: hit P with your thumb. It gets pretty easy to build pylons and probes that way. When you hit B>P with your thumb for pylons it goes pretty fast.

Look at it this way, once you get used to hitting "p" for probes, you'll also be in great shape to use the 8-0 hotkeys.

I have my thumb on b all the time but both is fine I guess

Opened up with what looked pretty similar to a Starcraft 2 force, Zeatlos, Dragoons and, because I was soooo high on gas, DTs. I would probably get some friends of mine, who I usually play SC2 or Diablo 3 with in the after working hours, to play with me. Two of them even used to play BW, but not really vs HI, just casually, the campaign mode and from time to time vs AI. Will be a lot of fun :-) Now I have to learn how to use hotkeys (can't add buildings to one group by holding 'shift' and click?), learn the basics about units, counters and openers by reading and watching replays and when I'm feeling comfortable I'll give it a shot at the ladder, I'm so excited hahah Heheheeee. Um, you can't select more than one building at once. You have to macro individually. Also, if you ever try psi storming by selecting all your high templar, spamming "t", and clicking all over the enemy units, you'll get a nasty surprise.

Ah Im going to update the OP with info iv got from all you good people because it seems that im not the only one who wants to get into this game
|
So i did all of this, but my game keeps crashing. And i have no clue how to find people bad enough to practice with. I need help!!
|
Good luck starting BW and I have to commend you on editing your OP to make the information more accessible.
|
you'll probably have to find an area where you can find a couple people to play with.
i remember that at times in the past, i would join public obs (competitive maps usually with observer slots) games to play random games or to spectate them. they were usually quite competitive and although the game title could say something like 'noobs'... there would be some pretty o-k players who would join and pretend to be bad in chat just to try crushing whoever else that joined
since you're starting, you'll probably have to have friends to play with where you support one another in getting better. unfortunately, i have to say that this aspect was much easier for me when the game was generally much more popular in years ago. my friends were very active and we actually formed in-house 1v1 groups all the time to have fun and learn.
[it's my personal opinion that a top-5 rule for improving is to never 'complain'. do your best and tweak until you hit a point where a human couldn't possibly do better.]
we're ages older compared to back then so what do we do these days if we don't SC-exhibition? ---now?... b*tches and ho's and money, haha---excuse my language. hardly anyone i know plays anything to be competitive unless it's the next big MMO. very few people in comparison, know the art that is starcraft!!
that said, i haven't played in forever and wouldn't mind picking up another game to play for a bit :D perhaps send me a PM if you want a low-level practice partner (i haven't -played- sc1 since 2008)

Let's have a minute of silence for all the SC2 users oblivious to the excellence of this game.

give it a break, there are far more people out there who could care even less. atleast sc2 player are along the same line. silence isn't going to do a thing. actually doing something (say, creating a thread and getting the word out) is a lot of good in comparison.
also, there's an edit feature to the boards, please use it.

This thread gave me the infection that is BW and I went back and did 3 1v1s and I SUCK! worse then ever sc2 has made me slow and dumb. also totally not used to movement control.

1) is it worth it downloading BW NO it doesn't. If there is one game you should buy a real copy of the game it should be SC BW.
2) What should i do before i play any games If you are new to the game may be you should try to finish the campaign first. it will help a lot.
3) are there any specific things i need to do before going online, i.e. ICCUP, antihack things? and how do i do these ? I have to warn you that THE PEOPLE who are still playing BW are real gamer! They are very nice and they always welcome a newcomer to the community. However, These guys are not WOW player and they will crush you like a bug for your first 200-300 game. So be prepare.

After reading this thread I just sit here wondering, why did I ever quit SC:BW?
Now I play LoL and feel ashamed to even say it in here, purely out of respect for the amazing game of SC. And its community. God, the community was amazing and inspiring. I miss SC.
In the end I think I ended up quitting because it sucked me in too hard and I couldn't get motivated for much else when I was very into SC. Also, you couldn't take a leisurely game when coming home after a long day at work. There are no such things as leisurely games in SC:BW. You get sucked in and and want to learn more. You dream about it at night, and try to come up with new build orders in the morning shower. You want to read up on strategic intricacies, identify your flaws, perfect your muta micro. That's what makes it the best game for anyone with passion. It also makes it hard to fit into your everyday life with friends, girlfriend and work.
But hey - you should definitely try it. Have your run and see where it takes you.

There's nothing unethical about using the ICCup Brood War. But yea, definitely worth having a real copy for the campaign.

Yea, I bought the battle chest for $30 for Mac yearrrrs ago when BW was new, so I didn't feel guilty for pirating the Windows version now to play the campaign again (the Mac one is PPC, no way I could run it now).
|
It's fun but expect to get just smashed for a while. If you're thinking of being really competitive, join the Fish Server as well since iCCup isn't as full as it used to be.
