Been looking to get into BW? SC2 player thinking of trying out this game but don't know where to start? D/D+/C- player looking to pick up gameplay tips or advice about a certain MU? You've come to the right place!
This will be a new-player show with the goal of helping out D- -> yellow rank level players! The general format will feature L_Master as he attempts to improve his gameplay from the red rank realm of D+ to a shiny new yellow rank. The show will air once a week and will focus on analysis and advice of L_Master's replays, as well as potential analysis of high level foreigner and pro games. Since L_Master is a Protoss player their will likely be a protoss flavor, however expect other players of different races to be occasionally invited on to share some of their games
Whether your a total beginner with no idea where to start, a yellow rank player looking for a useful tidbit of information you hadn't heard, or a D+ player wondering how to make the jump from red to yellow ranks this show will have something for you.
When: Friday, Mar 30 5:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)
Where: twitch.tv/l_master
Along with the show expect to see every to every other week an addition to the BW Beginner's Guide (found here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=272906) for a new match-up. The guide will lay out a safe build in every match-up, discuss various common early/midgame options your opponent has along with appropriate responses, touch on lategame goals, and include details on how to micro in common situations.

10 as in 10AM or 10PM? I assume PM but you should clarify.
|
It's set using [time] tags, which use the 24 hour format. So it's 10am for you.
|
Can't wait! I'm tuning in for sure :D This is a good idea. Once L_Master gets Yellow though, be sure to do one for zergs too

Best of luck L_master! I'll be sure to follow you and visit. Also any plans or would you guys like to collaborate with me on doing one of these for someone at bottom yellow rank moving to blue ranks? It seems to be an impossible journey for some as there's such essential mechanics and multi-tasking that really show between C/B. PM me!

Who's our yellow hero being followed to blue? I just read the "L_Master going from D+ to shiny yellow" and figured it was D>C, my mistake.

I seem to recall a Jaedong proleague game where he was brown and someone was referring to his lings as "shitlings" due to the color. So nOoNe's color is Jaedong's color too?

Ah ok it would be great if we could see. I was curious what kind of hoops Dragon was making you jump through. I had so many friends who were yellow and are either STILL yellow or quit already for sc2. Seems like less than 1% of people who make it out of red make it out of yellow. Its like this black hole of death for iccup players.

I haven't learned this one yet... thnx for tip : )))))) I just realized today was Thursday, I guess I missed this... Another time, I guess. Also I am curious if you can actually improve in iccup given the amount of players you are playing or the class of them, it seems like it would be very hard.

I'm not sure what you mean here.
Are you saying it's hard to improve because the level of play is lower? I guess I'm lost as to why a D/D+/C- player would be unable to improve playing against other D/D+/C- players.

You won't improve very quicky regardless of your rank if you're playing exclusively against D/D+/C- ranked players. It doesn't matter if you're E rank, D+ rank, or A rank. Players at lower levels generally don't have the correct mindset for you to improve if you're exclusively practicing against them (This is under the presupposition that you want to be a standard player). In my opinion, the best form of practice for players around that skill level would involve practicing against no opponent and then moving on to playing actual opponents. After a couple of weeks against opponents you can move on to practicing without an opponent again. This will help you develop builds and strategies (Without an opponent) and when you face an opponent you will develop game sense. And regardless of how you practice, you are pretty much wasting your time if you are consistently playing with non standard opponents, especially at such a low rank. This is likely the reason why progamers don't really practice on public servers with public players even if using smurfs. A large number of players completely exclude practicing without an opponent and therefore have weak mechanics and outdated or unpolished builds.

The only players I've ever heard succeed with offline practice are Blackman and NonY. Everybody else improves by playing real people.

Progamers in interviews all the time discuss creating build orders in single player....and I never said you don't also improve by playing vs real people. I said you use a combination of both so you can develop game sense while maintaining good mechanics. I just don't understand how someone can learn a new build if they don't practice it in single player or without an opponent first.

My mechanics are the worst on the entire server, or probably in history. How can I fix this?
All joking aside - my mechanics (or lack thereof) are really poor. I'm working on correcting my mistakes, but of course, I would be open to suggestions on methods of improvement.

We'll I can tell you what's worked for me; going from literally the 10 APM bronze league that Gheed loves to discuss in his blogs to a player that can, when my shit is together, macro/multitask reasonably well for someone who is D+.
I do several things basically. The first thing was literally just drilling against the AI, perfect worker production was the only goal and if I fucked up I restarted. Then I would take that and do it adding units and keeping money low. Once I had that feeling really good (constant probes off 4+ bases, low money, pylon timing, yadda yadda) I would take it into real games. I personally liked taking it up another notch, and automatically leaving the game if I ever let myself float over 500 minerals, as I HAD to do that above anything else (basically made bad macro = auto dying on the spot). But that's not for everyone. As I did this more and more, at first my play was almost worse because I was so focused on macro I wasn't really able to micro but as you practice it macro becomes more automated and you find the little gaps where you can go be microing, scouting, etc.
As far as the multitasking side several things helped me there:
1) Speed Games - This is me literally forcing myself to play stupid fast, fast enough that my play becomes sloppy because I'm pushing the boundaries of the multitasking I am currently comfortable with. Eventually though you become used to it, adjust, and have expanded your ability to multitask (that little multitask UMS isn't bad for this sort of thing either). I want to emphasize that the goal here is NOT to get a higher apm; the goal is to do more. Don't focus on APM, focusing on jumping around everywhere do as much shit as you can possible do, and do it fats enough that your play starts to become a little sloppy (though when I do it I like to ensure my macro is still tight) 2) DEAFAP - Do Everything As Fast As Possible. I watched streams of people sometimes and they are really slow about the stuff they do. They click slowly through gates/facts/hatches, they have relatively slow movement boxing and sending scv's to mine, they re-rally slowly, take a long time to place the building. Try to minimize how much times is spent doing those things. It's a big difference when you can re-rally gates in less than a second vs. taking 5-10s to do it. Same for macro cycling. Having to look away from an important battle 3+ times and/or staying away from it in one long look is harder to get yourself to do as opposed to just being able to flip back through your base and do it all super fast. 3)FPVoDs - Watch them. See how progamers multitask, learn what they focus on, how they hotkey, when they go to macro at important battle points, etc. You can really improve alot watching a section of an FPVoD and then go into a game right after and try to replicate that feel and focus, and this also helps by making sure your focusing on good decisions and actions/rather than multitasking a bunch of wrong stuff in your effort to play faster. 4) Hotkeys - Make sure you have a good system your comfortable with that allows you to do everything you need to quickly and efficiently. If your hotkeys don't allow for this, re-work them.

I just want someone to fix my TvT QQ =[

Why should you cut probes on 13 when going FE (against 12 hatch) for the earlier nex, instead of cutting them on 17, when you're already supply blocked? You said an early core is the goal of the forge FE, but is it really?

You don't want to be delaying your core since tech is paramount in pvz. For example, just look at your own pvz reps and compare your stargate/sair timing to his spire/scourge timing. A good protoss will have his stargate finishing as zerg's spire is about to start. An unclean protoss who doesn't have his builds down and does things like delay core for no reason might have his stargate start when spire finishes. This means that any Z who sees this can just autowin with muta or decide to get way ahead in later game.

Also, I said you should cut probes on 13 vs an overpool, I don't think I talked about vs 12hatch at all. edit: Nvm, I talked about my responses vs 12h.

All joking aside - my mechanics (or lack thereof) are really poor. I'm working on correcting my mistakes, but of course, I would be open to suggestions on methods of improvement. I will try to talk about this.

The youtube vod has the bottom and right side of the screen cut off quite significantly, cant see some of the minimap, so thats an issue. also there was like 15-20 mintues of dead time atr the start. if you're going to link a vod please link a complete vod that works properly O.o

Not exactly terrible players to aspire to be. Honestly though, contrasting Blackman and NonY's offline vs online practice percentages really rules out NonY. Black+ Show Spoiler +man.

The dead time is an issue, and I can fix that. Thanks for letting me know!
I am not sure what's going on in youtube though as the right side is absolutely not cutoff whatsoever, and if the bottom is cut off at all it's almost unnoticeable. The minimap doesn't appear cutoff by more than like a pixel or two if it's cutoff at all, so I at a loss there.

You could just go on twitch tv, make it save your recorded video forever and link that here.

Yea, either option works perfectly fine for me. Doesn't really make any difference, to me anyway, whether I put them on YT or leave them on twitch.tv.
If people have a preference I'm happy to do whatever you viewers would prefer.

The video should now be properly cut on youtube, beginning right at the start of the show with no ridiculous dead time.

video is not available with the link...maybe you need to correct it :/

Works fine for me. Maybe the quoted links are still wrong since I think trimming changed the URL, but I changed the original link yesterday when I trimmed it.
For convenience: nOoNe Weekly Episode 1

I fixed the link in the op, it should be good now.

So if you're doing 3 hatch hydra into fast econ (most progames I've seen take a fast fourth base + 5th hatch while teching to lair --> hydralurk), When should you start thinking about making units instead of drones against a 6~8 gate 2base hanbang with 4-6 temps + perhaps obs? Should I stop at around 40-ish drones like in regular 5 hatch hydra play and make a muta group + hydras + 4 or so lurks for his push or what?

Puppykiller was the streamer for that episode and I think he was having some technical challenges with getting it uploaded.
I will be uploading Episode 3 here to youtube shortly.
