I know this makes quite a bit of topics about it, but I kindly ask the admins to keep it open.
Over the past three weeks, I've had very little time to play any BW, or get outside, or anything like that. For anyone that's ever organized anything, you know how hard it is. I've constantly been messaging people on Trillian and such, reminding them about matches, etc.
Today was the day of the TANL finals - a day I had set many a things aside for. We've been planning this for a while now. A shoutcast was set up. Ret was supposed to play Testie in a bo7 for a 100$. Unfortunately, none of that happened.
Before we continue, I should note something. I've always believed Nick, mostly because I thought he was misjudged. Whenever someone said he was a dumbass, I'd tell them that they are wrong - he is actually a smart person if you speak to him one on one. Whenever someone said he hacked, I'd tell them that they are wrong - he doesn't need to hack.
So, today I wake up. Freak was supposed to shoutcast today, friends were supposed to obs, and above all - people were supposed to enjoy. The main reason I organized (or tried to) this league was to give something back to the community - give a little enjoyment.
12:30 - people accumulate in the channel. 12:45 - Freak hasn't answered yet, and so I get Pride as a safety backup for the shoutcasting. 12:50 - Pride starts shoutcasting. 12:55 - Freak arrives, and does not go back on his word.
So, I tell Freak that he will shoutcast after game one. After game one, I start game two and forget that Freak is supposed to join the game to shoutcast on TeamSpeak, so Pride continues shoutcasting. Freak is supposed to shoutcast game three, but of course, that never happens. To the readers: Freak was hung over after a welcome home party the night before, and he - walked - all the way to his place to shoutcast for some ruddy tournament, something he never got to do, because Testie just "had to go".
It turns out, by the way, that Testie had to go play poker with his boss. I normally don't do this, but here is the chat transcript:

No, I do not think getting to know people is trivial. However, I've missed out on parties just to organise this, and it fails, because of you. My own sacrifices in vain, I can live with. But, you didn't just screw me over, you screwed tons of people over. People that were trying to listen to the shoutcast. Ret, who set aside his entire day for this. Friends of mine, who were sorely disappointed. My cousin, who logged on a bit late and wanted to listen to the shoutcast to try and get better at English (he lives in Poland), but never got to, mainly because there was no shoutcast to listen to. Freak, who at the moment I think I am the most sorry to. Through my fuck-ups (and yours, Nick), I don't think Freak will ever do any favors for me again. I also take this time to forgive FakeSteve, who no doubt Freak might be pissed at for sending him to such a retarded tournament oragnizer. radiaL, who's computer I troubled for no reason. Pride, who I gave five minutes to set everything up. To everyone that I told "Hey, 1 PM EST, #TANL" to. And, to Team Areola, who I have pretty much now shamed. I wanted to do a second TANL, but after the outcome of this one, what's the use? It'll all be a big joke anyway.
Mostly, I'm annoyed at myself. I will now be the victim of many, many "I told you so"s. Of course, what else is frustrating is that I remember something you told me - "you're doing a great job adminning this tourney". And I thought, this guy can't possibly screw me over. It'll be np. But, heh, you did it. Sneakily, too. I log on, and you tell me that you might only have time to play two games today. And then, you behave like an ass in the games, and after game two, "I told you I might have to go!" is what you say.
I guess what irks me the most isn't all the people I've disappointed, it's mostly that... I had expected better coming from you.

If it were up to me, I would just flat out ban testie from any sort of competition until he can show that he cares enough to put in the time. Any tournament you have ever seen testie enter, there has always been things that add controversy. I say just leave the guy out...whats 1 less competitor when you can save alot of frustration and headaches. =\

Unfortunate as it is I guess Ret just made an easy $100 heh and you didn't spend the rest of the day in a tourney, although now your stuck making up for it to all the people you mentioned. There was another shoutcast hosted for ppl who had buffer probs by ReSpOnSe and the server had 20 ppl waiting for him to shoutcast it, but everyone running this ignored him. The games were scheduled long before testie had to go. He should have made an exception for his personal life if hes going to involve himself with this event. Instead he signs up for something with no intention of actually comitting to it, wasting all of our time.
You can't hold that he was 0-2 against him, Oxygen said himself he would've left if it were 2-0. time to remember how about 3-4 years ago. i went on east now n then to play a few games there. never really liked testie n always knew he hacked. hardly no1 shared this oppinion and everytime i flamed this lil cockgagger in public, whole x17 went wild on me. shows not only how much testie sucks, also shows how much BNET + IT's ppl sucks. luckily, 3 years later, almost every1 found out that testie is the incarnation of a true BNET nerd w/ a big mouth n lil ballz.

i'll just chime in with aggreenace that yea oxygen, nobody holds this against you, or are worried that the next tourney will be a flop. This is all on testie. When a sports figure is found to be on steroids, they dont blame the organization, the blame the team/player. This event went pretty smoothely imo, and now that you have the kinks worked out and know what to look out for, like suspicious behavior among participants, the next one will probably be even better.

Oxygen: I would encourage you not to let the actions of ONE (singular) person in the BW community stop you from doing what you are doing. Many many people are excitied about what you have organized and hope that you continue. Don't let Testie dictate what you are going to do. all i know is that if you sign up for a tournament, then suddenly beforehand say you might have to leave (for no really good reason, i mean, come on poker with the boss can be rescheduled, or not scheduled at all if you know you have a match), lose two games in a row and then quit, it looks really bad.
i didnt really keep up with the tourny but from what it sounds Oxy, you put alot of work into it and i guess he (testie) just didnt respect that. i was listening to the shoutcast (nice work pride once the buffering problem stopped it was good) then i switched over to teamspeak where Response was commentating and he still tried to keep us all entertained (which he did)..anyway after watching the reps anyone else get the feeling testie was just bored and couldnt really be bothered to play properly?

Oxy, this was a great league and I really enjoyed it. The games were great, save these last 2 that were kinda shitty, due to Testie.
Let me say this; You all know I like Testie, and I defend his behaviour as the ranting of a show man that never disappoints. But this was just plain shitty. If I were to guess, I would say that Testie wasn't feeling (as he would say) very Testie-ish in his play today. Knowing he was going to lose to a very strong and in shape ret, he pussied out.
It's the truth. I'm not going to stop liking Testie as a player, but as Naz said, Nick cares so much about every little game and every little tourny that if he ever loses for any reason, he needs to fudge it and make it seem as though extenuating circumstances got the better of it. Excuses, etc.
Know this, you let no one down. This was a great tournament and Testie was playing and behaving well to this point. You never could have seen this coming.
Good luck in the future. The tourny on the whole was awesome and we all liked watching. Don't be turned off of doing it again, that would be a shame.
chances are testie made up an excuse to leave in the event of losing. That's what naz meant by he cares too much. Not about the game but about his own self image. He plans escape routes instead of admitting his own inadequacy taking it like a man.

Actually, this behaviour makes the difference between him and the top non korean gamers. He will never win anything big like FiSheYe or Mondragon did. He will never make a career as a pro gamer like Nazgul or Assem did.. Testie isnt interested in getting better, he's still interested in getting wins and good stats.. Thats why he never reached much offline and why he probably never will.
But thats one thing. Being an asshole like this i didnt expect from Testie. I mean, he was quite arrogant and strange but never a real asshole in my eyes. This has changed..

Actually, I wouldn't mind if Testie was stopped from playing in the TLT right now. I would hate to see him playing in a league with such skilled, mature, distinguished players. It would be pretty cool if he were banned from everything TeamLiquid. Hint hint
I'm just wondering, but why is this being cast in such a detrimental light towards testie? What if we phrased it like this:
Testie knew he would have to leave soon, and had been playing for several days straight without going out. He told Oxygen at the beginning of the tournament that he would have to go soon, but it was decided that the tournament should proceed anyway. As he said, Testie soon had to leave. Realizing that he was off of his game anyway today, Testie decided to forfeit the match and give the money to Ret, conceding.
Now I know that testie has a hard time losing, and doesn't like admitting defeat even when he's just having a rough day, but I think its unfortunate how people treat him in the folder. Reading the chat transcript, it sounds like he was being pretty rational and not horribly ill-mannered. I just feel like if another player with better social skills was having an off day and conceded a tournament because he had to leave, no one would say anything. It's not as if he is claiming that he deserved the money or something. He just said the tournament was less important to him than getting out of the house and to retain relationships he thinks are important. I personally am going to continue loving the way Testie plays while regretting some of his personal choices.
I thought the same thing as you bine. But the fact is alot of people put alot of time and effort into this tournament. And after all and all, there wasn't even really a final. It was selfish of testie.

bine: I tried looking at it from this point of view. Before posting this, I asked people - should I? I'd search myself and feel a few seconds of compassion. All those years of loving that style -- but then, that lingering feeling of bitterness keeps coming back.
He said that he wouldn't be able play - had that been two days before the match, or even a day before, I'd've gotten online and been able to reorganize this shit. But, Nick told me about ten minutes before the tournament started, the left, and only answered to me when I got him on MSN. People in the channel are pissed, because things are not going as planned, they're there wasting their time, and everyone is feeling annoyed.

As for the people saying that Testie should be banned from TLT, I think that's completely unnecessary. This is just an explanation to those regarding the outcome of the TANL. I have just lost >my< respect for Nick.
Again, I know all that. I've heard it like 230498238203582935 times commented in everything testie does. I agree that he's egotistical, but I feel like alot of it is overly-hyped. Everytime he says he thinks he's good, as all Pros do, for example, people are like WTF BM and its just frustrating to watch. I definitely agree it was wrong of him to forfeit the tournament, and I would have loved to have seen the whole series, but about the cheating thing, my understanding is that he was caught cheating a few times a while ago. Plus, I think its important to remember that on a normal day testie can, and has, beaten ret. Not to discount him, but testie is better. I guess I just feel like sure, its an unpleasant happening, and testie is definitely selfish, but some of the insults people post about him are out of hand. I don't think its fair to list reason why he's mentally disturbed, for example.

Any ways, my thoughts are that what Testie did wasn't right at all. Like it has been said earlier, I would understand if Testie would've told Oxy a day or two earlier instead of ten minutes earlier. Though I do recall Testie saying he would continue it later or tomorrow (though that would be wasting the time of all the people who had gathered there, were shoutcasting, etc...)
I agree with what someone said earlier (I believe it was Manablue), that Testie probably felt his play wasn't at his best today and decided to take his leave. I can totally see why this was a screwed up thing to do after Oxy worked very hard and did a good job with the tournament.
Overall, this was a great tournament with what could've been a great final... Too bad .... TANL2 should be good ^_^...

I told ret to decline and just let him play, oxy also said there that if ret disagrees, he will have to play or forfeit the match. Ret agreed though, and lost 1-2 on the next day.

Banned from all tournies like this, problem solved. Next time more specific questions should be asked of participants.. If players begin flagrantly lying about their willingness to dedicate themselves to the game, the the tournies fall apart and its all over.
Testie did dedicate himself to the former part of the tourney. Some hitches in the WBF, but I'm not counting that. That's why I had expected better coming from him, and though my bitterness is softened by how active he's been in the past, wtf that's some fucked up reasoning.
If my friend PAID for my entrance and having many people hoping for some GOOD GAMes I wouldn't even play for the money I'd play for the friend and the people who wanted this and waited for this.

i don't think testie was playing in the finals of some poker tournament... it's not like him and his boss go drive down to Atlantic City and go to make their rent money...
you would think that the finals of a tournament he was committed to play in and had importance to not just him (he played in all the other rounds, so it obviously mattered to him) but to others as well would take precedence over a random poker game with his boss that could be rescheduled to the next day, week, whatever.
so it comes down to why he left, the poker game being the excuse for the real reason: he was going to get raped by ret. losing another two games to ret takes what, an hour?
random poker games can be rescheduled or pushed back... especially considering how much BW matters to testie.
Actually, I feel bad for the guy. Of course, I always thought situations like this must be neat for Testie. He can be the most hated guy in the world online, then turn his chair around, stand up and walk away, then have everything be completely normal. I know, thats the internet, but that kind of thing has always interested me .
If you have that set of priorities and general understanding online, then it can't get any better offline, because there people will actually punch you in the face instead of just whining on public forums for nine pages.

He can't be expected to have a responsibility to his fans, hes not even a professional gamer. And with people paying his entry fee for him, hes got nothing invested anyway. So testie forfeits, ret wins and we miss out on a good series. I for one am not THAT disapointed.
I know Oxy put in lots of work, but sometimes things just dont work out. Evidently Oxy's invested too much in this... emotionally and otherwise. So testie forfeits, ret wins and we miss out on a good series. I for one am not THAT disapointed.
I know Oxy put in lots of work, but sometimes things just dont work out. Evidently Oxy's invested too much in this... emotionally and otherwise. Its awesome of him to do it for the community, but this ISNT professional basketball. Its not even professional. Its a casual starcraft tourney. If Nick wants to forfeit its up to him.

eh everyone has their flaws, just let him be, ban him from future tournaments you host oxy and just let it be, whats done is done, and really testie got what he wanted, he got all of your attention and made people mad. testie is an instigator, which is kinda obvious to me cause im lik ethat sometimes as well, and you people are just doing what he wants you to do, your making him the center of attention and getting upset over something so stupid... do you realize how moronic some of you sound getting upset over a video game? seriously, yes i agree what testie did was wrong, but some things you have to get over it. just do what i said and ban him from your future tournaments oxy, maybe then when you host another one and he wants to play and cant, he will realize how stupid he was to skip out on the first one, but banning h im from TLT ect is just stupid. TLT and oxy's tournament are in no way connected, thus there is no real reason to ban him from TLT, you guys are simply taking out anger or just trying to make his life more difficult, which basically makes you just as bad in theory, wether you want to admit it or not, its true. Testie yes does have an ego, and yes he can be rather bm and idiotic, but there are times hes a nice guy (altho the bad outwiegh the good), but still, thats what battle net invented the /squelch option for. Alot of you people claim testie has alot of growing up to do, but look in a mirror, so do you, me, and just about everyone on battle net does. everyone has their flaws, learn to accept it, if you cant then just leave that person alone, its only online, you arent forced into contact with them.
Pb with that stuff is that Testie has proven many times he cares a lot about his image, therefore he hates loosing, therefore he sometimes dodges so his story is hard to believe + he should have scheduled all this, it was a fucking final and a lot of ppl were expecting these games.
Of course nobody has proof but i tend to think he did dodge and was afraid of taking a 4-0 up his ass :p
