Kibibit's post made me tear up!
People are talking a lot about the game itself and progamers and those are important to me, too, but the community that I felt in this game was like nothing I'd ever experienced.
In 2001, the GameFAQs message board was where I visited to learn about low level Final Fantasy 3 playthroughs or a new hacked rom version to test your abilities. I had always had a soft spot for BW and picked it up randomly out of my bin, installed and went on the gfaqs BW board to see what I could learn to be awesome at the game. The gfaqs community had a channel called BSB and from then on I had no other life. I gave up all my shitty friends I had started high school with, thought about BW at school and came home and played as long as I could. I remember I didn't hang out with one person outside of school during my second year of high school and I couldn't have been happier. I could always count on 5 or 6 people to be in BSB and we would play together for hours. I got to know many of them very well and they were great friends to me at the time when talking to people I didn't know in person was a helpful personal experience. We made websites, hosted tournaments, used the ban hammer in channel a lot, made a yearly holiday commemorating a favorite in house player and we even had a comic series full of inside jokes. I learned about the delicate play that normal resource maps brought to the game and heard of the fact that there were pro players (no replays, yet!). Watched VODs when I could (but I was playing on a 28.8 modem!) and read battlereports.com over and over again. Once I finally saw the tvt replay of boxer locking down those battlecruisers I think I knew that my life would be different. I was absolutely fascinated by the skill. BSB ended up churning out more than a few really great players and I consider many of the people I talked to over 10 years ago friends today. Amazing!
Professional gamers are the reason the game itself is incredible. The most magical aspect of the sport is that style and personality can be seen in play by the discerning viewer and the game rewards viewers for knowing about the players, tournaments and the game itself. Being excited by an ongoing challenge is one of the greatest things that life has to offer and BW always has more to offer the curious mind. There's no skill cap so there's no end to the drama. I am great at picking up hobbies, learning how to be better than average within a short time and then giving up on them because they no longer excite or fascinate me. BW has always been fascinating and will never cease exciting.
As for personal play, I don't think I'd ever been so nervous in my life as when I would play BW tournaments back in the day with my friends from BSB. Especially if we traveled to other channels to compete! I didn't want to let the BSB name down and played as hard as I could (and still play terribly! hahaha). I remember something called Rose Ladder on useast. I remember signing onto gamei and being too afraid to actually play. I remember translating the WGTour registration page from French and posting it up for everyone I knew to sign up and start playing. I remember that manner was/is important in this game. I remember attending a WCG regional event and almost taking a game off a known player in a long match on Gaia (I'll never forget this!) I remember having to submit replays for every match won on wgtour. I remember playing a progamer on pgtour and dying to a dt drop but I couldn't have been more honored in my life. I remember that over 10 years after I first started playing BW competitively I was on stage at the OSL finals in Seoul congratulating Jangbi and a dream had been fulfilled. Hardly anything gives me more satisfaction than this game.

I love Brood War because it was game that me, my brother and my sister could play. Because of all the lans me and friends shared. Because it was game that I could compete against older and stronger people than me and win against them.
I love it thanks to watching Nal_Ra play. This guy not only had some really good sim city, but he considered whole map as his main base. I mean there was stuff everywhere. What a sick baller.
I love you Brood War <3

Brood war is such a great game. I got into it from SC2gg, though I'm not an amazing player in the least, the sweat and blood and hardship that is displayed in the game, whenever i see brilliant play from flash. it just makes me so damn happy and in awe of things that took years to accomplish.

I lost so much interest in BW when I found out about the Savior cheating scandal (he was by far my favorite player). I don't think it'll be the same to me =/
it's still my all-time favorite game, though.

I love Brood War because of Jaedong`s mutas against Iris. Because of Jangbi`s storms against Nada. Because of GGPlay dark swarms agains Iris. Because of Boxer`s x3 bunker rush against Yellow. Because of Firebathero`s dance against Savior. Because of Much`s pylon heart against Firebathero. Because of Tempest Dragoon against Light. Because of Flash`s...Because of Flash. Because of Bisu.

Because I am it and it is me. Because my entire life can easily be seen reflected in this game I've played for my whole life. Bad actions, good actions, memories, the best of them and the worst are all tied together in Brood:war. Dead friends, live friends, best friends everyone I've ever known or loved has known BW because of me. I love Brood War because I am it and it is me.

i love brood:war because the boys who lost at the lan party instantly after a 20 min no attack phase in the beginning. because its intense to watch the pros. because in 1998 i started with the campain on my friends pc. did not had my own one. Because my Brother with 7 years loved to play it on lan. And now with 15 nearly 16 he hates sc2 because of loosing on ladder because of my GF she loves these cute bugs

I love BW because its given me some of my best memories with my friends. I remember getting pissed and stomping Troy when he broke the 10 minute NR, i remember the epic 45 minute PvZ on destination between my friend Christian and I. I remember the big derpy Free for alls on hunters when i commanded Chris to go SK and he won even though i stormed so many marines. I remember every single reaver drop ive ever done. (they were all awesome) I remember the epic defences and the totally full of fail offences. I remember Borna proxy two raxing my ally. I could go on, but the point im getting at is that its amazing fun, both to watch and to play. I have to go, but ive gotta throw in when me hazy and chris were watching the OSL finals between lash and JD, when JD did that speedling timing attack against Flash's marines... OMG

I know in general its not encouraged to do this.
But I'm giving this post a QFT.
So true in its essence. BW is more than a game. It is a lifestyle. It is its own culture.

I love Brood War for moments like this that can be shared with a community like Teamliquid.

I love brood war because it spawned the greatest internet community in the world... ScReddit Team Liquid

I love Broodwar because it breaks through the limits of my imagination. Reality rarely surprises one's imagination. "you can't script something better than this!" Broodwar delivers that regularly. It's not every game, it's not even 10 games, but you know it's coming, you know it will deliver, you just don't know when. Reach V Flash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbJqPi9EtXk&list=FL_c8bX3-bcAjQ979Ce19DUA&index=27) Everyone's thoughts said Reach was DEAD, but he shows that his training, his ability, his game sense, is far superior to my imagination. Everyone thought flash was dead after, but he shows you that his game sense, his planning is still beyond your wildest imagination. I love Broodwar because it lets me dream bigger, it makes me realize that there are people out there who it able to do something that even in my wildest imagination, was impossible.

I watch broodwar for the QTs.
I'm a lover of SC2, I don't want to seem biased. But there's just something that seems so much more beautiful in a SC:BW game. Maybe the players are better or the game is just that much more developed, but for those important matches I'm just a little bit more excited than for the big SC2 tournaments.
For me the game that really turned me from being someone who just watched it to someone who wanted to watch every big game and was excited for every big tournament was the Korean Air OSL from 2010, Flash vs Effort. The unstoppable machine that was flash vs Effort, a good player, but a guy who hadn't really won anything, hadn't gotten far enough to really immortalize his name in the annals of broodwar history.
By all accounts this was flash's OSL. He was on fire. Dominant in every matchup, a monster of 'Best ofs', four losses in his last 30 games, alive in both Starleague tournaments. The only thing was though, one of those losses, the most recent one, had come against Effort. There was a chink in the Ultimate Weapon's armor.
The tournament starts with massive fanfare, it's being held in a massive Aircraft hangar packed with screaming fans. The upstart Effort is lowered down from the ceiling in an aircraft crane. Spectacular. Then the hangar doors open up. A jumbo Korean Air jet rolls up and the door opens and out pops the Ultimate weapon. The players march up through the raucous crowd, effort first followed by Flash, while the commentators and screaming fans echo in the background. Then the games begin.
Effort looks well prepared. An unorthodox 2 base 4 hatch Muta build that flash can't has him on the ropes. In unflash like fashion he loses a valk. Then.... lag into pause. The refs confer and a regame is called. Apparently flash's screen went black and he lost the valk. Lots of drama and controversy in the LR thread. Effort's preparation was all for naught. Flash comes back in the regame and wins the next two games looking completely omniscient while doing so. The chink in his armor has disappeared, and with one game away from elimination, it looks like Effort's journey ends here.
Game 3 looks a lot like game 2. Flash going MnM, moves out onto the map, but this time effort is ready with lots of lings and his third is nicely hidden. An absolutely beautiful ling surround (this was much harder to do in BW) and effort kills off Flash's push rather nicely. A hard switch to mutas by effort that Flash isn't prepared for start wrecking Flash. The Ultimate weapon ggs. Series goes to 2-1. Winning two more in a row is still going to be ridiculously hard to do.
Game 4. Flash's scv moves out early... towards the center of the map. The ripe odor of cheese weighs heavily in the air. But, hark, what this way comes? An overlord, from Effort? Yes, yes it is. Effort's miracle starsense tells him that flash is going to cheese him this game, and as his overlord reaches the center, flash cancels his second barrack. Gas goes up at home for Flash, follow this up with mech. A flood of lings from effort head towards flash's base. Flash micro manages to repel them.
Flash throws up a starport, still slightly mysterious as to what effort is doing. Effort manages to squeeze a ling into Flash's base and scouts the starport. HUGE. Hydra Den goes down and sunken comes up just as vulture gets to efforts base and he's able to repel. Vulture drop inc. Hydras are waiting, this should be cake for Effort to hold. Somehow flash is able to kill three drones, despite the hydras. 2 dropships out now for Flash and a switch back to bio. Still no expo. Double drop all in time. Effort moving out with his hydras, but spots the drop. He retreats and holds, not losing too many hydras and cleaning up most of the MnM. He follows it up with a huge amount of lings and transitions to lurkers. Another Effort ling surround and lurkers rip everything apart. GG. 2-2. It's all down to one last game now.
Effort looks like he's already won. After the first two games it looked to be all over and it showed on his face. Now with the series tied 2-2 its for all intensive purposes a Bo1 and Effort is coming into like he did into game one, full of confidence and ready to win. Flash... looks like flash.
Game 5, 12 hatch gas for Effort, 14 CC for Flash. Greedy flash being Greedy. Ling harass coming, but a bunker is up for flash. Super fast lair from Effort, but more lings coming... Flash doesn't pull SCVs and Effort runs his lings into the main. More lings come to the natural. Nothing is happening for flash, lings camping everything. Flash breaks, GG. The messiah has arrived! Effort takes the OSL finals.
The series may not have had the most epic games in the world, but the drama of it all overshadowed the gameplay. It was truly one of the most epic series I've ever seen and really cemented my passion for SC:BW. Even as the scene seems to be dying I still remain a huge fan of the game and will watch every OSL, MSL (hopefully), SWL, and Proleague finals I can catch. Jangbi vs Fantasy reminded me of what a broodwar finals really is.
Long live Broodwar.
