Our hearts have been bombarded with one bad news after another. I don't need to list them out for you - just check the top 10 threads in the BW General section and you'll get the idea.
Instead, I will try to enlighten you (and myself, too!) with these fresh news articles from Fomos and DES. No, I do not have the time to translate them all right now (and I'm not allowed to translate Fomos ones anyway). So these are open for fellow translators to grab as you wish (I'll link the articles here), but most them are short and perhaps not worthy of a full translation. I do encourage someone to pick up the Twitter Q&A with Reach though. If there aren't any takers, I'll get on it this weekend.
- Thanks Kalent for translating the OGN Commentator Um Jae Gyung article. Updated link. - Updated link to Ryo's thread regarding Light Girl's conditions.
Stats rewarded with a 100%+ salary increase from KT FomosDES Brief overview: Stats, earlier in the season, set a personal goal to achieve 40 wins in the SPL season and to double his salary for next season. He indeed achieved his goal when KT rewarded him for his contributions and hard work. KT management said that they awarded Stats with a huge salary increase that brings his salary near the 100 million won mark (approximately $100k USD). Stats is extremely happy about this, and is recovering well from his recent chin surgery.
KT renews Violet's contract FomosDES Brief overview: KT showed that they are indeed a loyal and caring team by signing a contract with Violet. Violet, who has been diagnosed with leukemia early in the season and hospitalized ever since, said that he's very grateful for the support from his team. He is optimistic about his treatment and recovery process, and wishes to return to the stage soon.
Player contracts in the finalization stage Fomos Brief overview: KT announced that all of their player contracts have been renewed for next season. SKT announced that all of their player contracts except for Bisu's have been finalized. Bisu, who was the main force behind SKT's incredible SPL regular season record, is still in the process of negotiating the terms with the team. Both SKT and Bisu are expected to come to terms soon. CJ, which also had a good run last season, have announced that there are not going to be major surprises in player contracts, and that they are in the final stage of getting the contracts done. Fans are curious about whether Hydra will get a raise, and how CJ will value the return of Effort. Other teams like Samsung Khan, Woongjin Stars, and STX are also expected to finalize their player contracts soon, with few to no raises due to their disappointing results last season.
Light shows his support for his fan DES Brief overview: Light Girl is sick (see this thread). Light, having heard the news, immediately visited a local hospital to make blood donation towards the girl's surgery. Light is also planning to visit the girl in the hospital once she is cleared to accept visitors. He expressed his concern and wishes the girl a successful surgery and swift recovery. Bonus: in the comments: "Jaetler to forcibly extract and donate Woongjin Team blood to the girl's surgery"
Flash's surgery date finalized DES Brief overview: Flash will receive surgery in the coming 19th (September 19th). KT released their position on this, saying that "they had to delay the surgery a little bit due to the re-scheduling of SPL Finals and the ensuing vacation to Guam." Flash is expected to be ready and well for the start of next season.
Twitter Q&A: REACH DES Brief overview: Twitter Q&A with everyone's favourite MANTOSS. There are questions regarding his manly looks, manly muscles, why he's so good looking, what he thinks about his muscles... oh and also about his future plans, has he thought of SC2 like YellOw, what were some of his most memorable moments in his career, and blabla.
OGN commentator Um Jae Gyung opens up about the current state of the scene DES Full Translated Article by Kalent Brief overview: OGN's oldest commentator Um Jae Gyung has been a part of this scene ever since the very roots of Korean e-sports scene, starting with Tooniverse (founded 1995, anime/cartoon channel). He recalls having the first broadcasted SC match ever on the Tooniverse channel - with 0 dollars of sponsorship, pocket change for prize money, an old dusty ping pong table, and a couple computers. Nobody imagined the e-sports scene as it is today. Match-fixing scandal and legal feud with Blizzard are two biggest factors he identifies as the cause of recent withdrawal of three corporate sponsors. He acknowledges the events of today as temporary setbacks, and that the livelihood of SCBW e-sports scene is in the hands of the fans - both die-hard regulars and casuals.
KT sends 100 blood donation certificates to Light Girl FomosDES See Ryo's thread for Light Girl regarding the original articles and updates.

My friends, it looks certain that there will be a next season. Do not fear. I'll try to deliver these kind of comprehensive quick-news whenever I can. Also, to Ryo, sorry I didn't have time to work on that Stork overview article you linked me last time, but don't you think I forgot about it!
I've also read that Flash has already signed a contract with a roughly $300,000 salary and that Bisu, who has a salary of over about $200,000, is going into renegotiation with SKT1.
Thanks i really needed this! and its mah birthday!!! So :D Thanks for this "Birthday gift" :D made me really happy lol (i know it wasnt for me but still :D)
Things are actually very simple: As long as there are people watching BW, it will not die. And obviously it wont die soon because a) Proleague finals were again most viewed E-sport event of the year, which means people are still interested in BW, and b) Do you think these guys from KT and SKT are idiots? They wouldn`t sign those 200.000-300.000$ contracts unless they knew that Flash and Bisu will earn them 10x more money than they are paid. And teams disbanding? Not good for sure, but it`s normal...Teams disband in football or basketball all the time, industries that make 1000x more money than Brood War. SC2 a threat for BW? Not really, people were saying that 2009. was the last year of Brood War-it didn`t happen. 2010. again- again didn`t happen. If we can get one sponsor and merge 3 teams into 1 super strong team which will be able to compete with SKT,KT and CJ, things would look very nice for Brood War.
Thanks for all these updates Opticalshot, appreciate it. Wow stats earning 100K :0, well done. Also really really happy Violet got re-signed.
What are SKT and Bisu negotiating? pay? Yeah Light, you go visit that girl and make her happy. And someone please translate that Reach Q&A please :D (pretty please)

Nah, the small sponsors are drifting out and only the big sponsors are remaining.
Now all it just depends on whether or not a big sponsor will form an 8th team. If that happens, BW should remain stable for a long, long time.
OpticalShot, thanks a lot for the topic! Fuck yeah gogogo next season And hopefully, with at least 8 teams - very much hopes that the rumours about the new team (sponsored by JinAir or Korean Air) are true. So many players just can't be left without work, and moreso that among them there is Jaedong.
Even if I didn't care much for BW news (mainly a SC2 follower, sorry), the recent succession of news struck me as quite bad. But seeing this makes me think that maybe things aren't ALL that bad

Nice to see adequate SC2 users remembering and being respectful to their "roots"

This is by far the greatest news here. Amazing. Love KT.
Not really a BW follower, but about Flash's injury. Is injury pretty common in the BW scene or is it something that happens that rarely happens now and then? I known that Boxer been suffering some injury for sometimes but don't really know that is it a common things among the Bownja?
I came to the starcraft scene with starcraft II, however people like day9 made me love bw as well, and eventhough I'm not good enough to play it I understand how amazing this game is. I'm glad to hear good news like that about bw in korea, thanks for doing that .
So basically SKT1 and KT are like the Red Sox and the Yankees. And Fox/Oz/MBC are like the Royals/Devil Rays/Pirates. Except the revenue disparity is even higher and there's no revenue sharing or other ways for lesser teams to make ends meet.
I know this is suppose to be an upbeat thread, so sorry to be debbie downer here.
Much thanks OpticalShot. BW forum has been so focused on sensationalist bad news that we are forgetting we still have a lot Here's to continuing to enjoy Brood War!

Yeah, that was what I was getting at. The rich sponsors are throwing money at players and buying championships so the poor sponsors are basically saying, "Fuck this. We can't compete."

At this point in time, who gives a shit about the structure of the league when even the league itself was in question? I think most of us will take all the good news that we can get right about now.

I wonder who would sponsor the 8th team though. Would be deliciously random if it was a fried chicken place like Kyochon. :p

Let's put it this way.
1. There's a lot of fans who care about BW(high ratings) 2. There's a lot of money in BW(high player salary) 3. There's a lot of players in BW(best RTS players in the entire world) 4. THere's a lot of infrastructure in BW(2 cable channels
So why is it that half the league is saying "Screw this. Forget it"?
KT can give Stats a 100% raise. Yet Hwaseung thinks a team with Jaedong on it is not worth sponsoring. Do you not see the problem here?

"most viewed E-sport event of the year" all this means is that it stands a better chance of surviving on mainstream cable than any other E-sport. it says nothing about how it compares to other possible programming the cable station can replace it with.
League of Legends and SC2 are not the competition here. It's baseball, comedy, reality tv, and mainstream drama that will push Brood War off of cable.
remember Brood War on MBCGame is not being replaced by Call of Duty or Halo competitions... its being replaced by music videos.
player salaries are rising because they are no longer replaceable by up and coming 16 year olds.
I'm glad there's some good news around. Grats to Stats (pun defiantly intended). Its great that Light is being so chivalrous like that. And lastly, I hope Violet recovers soon.

over all numbers are slowly falling with no growth potential in other areas. ever major corporations knows their is a hard ceiling on ratings.... the peak is over and "investment spending" will always be limited.
Intel/AMD/ZOTAC all make logical sponsors for a computer game just as Ford/GM/Chrysler/Honda are great sponsors for an auto race.
the problem with Brood War is that I can pick a computer up for free at the local "Salvation Army Donation Store" and it will play Brood War.
Therefore, an entire segment of international manufacturers is out as a sponsor.
Could the Indianapolis Racing League by a thriving//growing entity if Auto Parts Manufacturer's and Auto Maker's themselves would not be a sponsor of any events?
Stats and Bisu definitely deserve their raises. Hopefully Hydra gets a good one also. I highly doubt he was well paid coming into this season. Sad to hear about Light's girl. Hopefully the girl will be cheered up when her hero comes to visit her. Reach's twitter Q&A article MUST be translated.

I fail to see why you are disagreeing with me.
My point is that there is a ton of money to be made off of BW. But that the current setup is flawed. You have basically explained why that is the case.
So why is there a need for 1 sponsor, 1 team? Why can't it be "National Starcraft Association" where every game is sponsored by Shinhan, Olleh, SK Telecom, etc.? Or something similar? Why do you force companies like Hwaseung and Wemade to make huge investment of a single team rather than lesser sponsorships?
My only point is that there's enough stuff to make things work. There's just not enough ingenuity.
Why the gloomy comments?? This post is a much-needed ray of sunshine, and I'm gonna bask. Argue and cast shadows if you like, but don't come over here to me. BW hwaiting!!!

I think that's more of a problem with those specific corporations than anything else. However, my point was to not worry about problems that have no short-term solution, and just take what we can get. For example, what you say might sound good on paper, but in actuality, there might be logistical, financial, and other obstacles that prevent such a situation from materializing.
I never was into BW. This saddens me and I certainly regret it. Not only do I respect the game itself, and I don't want it to die, but if BW lasts 5 more years, maybe that means SC2 will also last longer. Maybe SC2 wont die until 5 years after SC3 comes out. Maybe SC3 could last ~15+ years as well. #futureofesports
people still watch broodwar?? that is absolutely ridiculous. i was one of the first pro players here in America, in clan deathrow. broodwar is a great memory and im grateful for everything it taught and gave me. but i think its really psychotic people are still trying to support a game that is clearly obsolete in every way. not rational behavior.
if i was one of the last few guys in BW, i'd still take your money too. but who, on earth, would ever watch or support those matches??? lunacy
time to get some therapy. its not 2002 anymore. we have sc2 and other bigger better things, good god people.. LIVE

By a stretch he is saying that, but what the more general message is that devoting time and money to something that is outdated and (potentially) failing is lunacy.

people will watch what they enjoy. theres no rational reason people should watch pitchers take 10 mins to throw out a pitch but its been going on for 100+ years. who are you to tell people what they should be watching/supporting.

Your viewpoint is garbage, and I don't need to explain the inappropriateness of coming into a BW news thread telling people why you don't think it's worth your time to watch. Basically like going to a college basketball game and telling the audience that you don't watch it because the NBA is better.

y nice point u jump on everythign cause its new ^_^
and if u play games for graphics i dont know why the fuck u post on this site. and BW graphics > SC2 pew pew shiny graphics
For a game that you claim is so hard to watch because of it's graphics still had 1 in every 5 teenagers in Korea watch the proleague Grand Finlas,I'd prefer it if you learn to look past the graphics and actually critisise the game and it's proscene, otherwise your argument is quite poor.

This ^^ I can't stand watching Brood War because the graphics are so terrible. Feel free to call me whatever since that is my reason for not watching, but the fact of the matter is that relatively the same game exists with a 3D graphics engine. TL is donating more attention to SC2, why won't everyone else.
Nobody cares what you think.
I explained my viewpoint and opened myself to criticism for it, you made a statement that has no backing and seemingly no reason to post. I really would have preferred an actual rebuttal.
mk, how about this. As fun as I find SC2 it just isn't SC:BW. I have serious doubts that that will ever change. SC2 just doesn't feel the same. It lacks a certain dynamic feel to it that BW has right now. Maybe it is the development time that BW has had or maybe not. We have to give SC2 about ten years to find out. However, it is stupid to simply rule out one of (if not the) best games ever made. You expect people to abandon something as developed as BW for a game that is still in it's infancy. I find the notion laughable, and if one day SC2 does take over and BW disappears I hope that it is with enough time for it to be a graceful transition. I don't want it to be something that is just thrown on a game that is still being patched. I don't want it put on a game that still has TWO expansions left. I want the transition to be given to a better game than BW and that game is NOT SC2.

haha yeah, Bisu should be fine too. The guy already makes bank and after coming off a record season (I think the teams care a ton more about Proleague than individual leagues) he should definately get a raise. Probably not Flash level but he'll be amongst best paid in progaming.

Seriously, anyone who thinks they are the same game either sucks at sc2/sucked at both of them or never played BW. They are entirely different games, really. If sc2 was called Warcraft in Space there wouldn't be a split in the community and it probably wouldn't get any attention at all in Korea. It's actually funny that this guy says it's 'relatively the same game' when for the longest time sc2 guys criticized BW "elitists" for just wanting BW with better graphics.
Dakota, are you 12 years old? I hate playing an RTS in 3d, the entire feel is fucked and I can't imagine anyone who is post puberty would really have a problem with "graphics". I can't imagine anyone who is competitive in an RTS or any game to really give a shit about graphics at all, actually, unless it hindered gameplay (oh shit, it does that in sc2!!).
Awesome for Stats on his humongous raise, anyone have any idea when we will get to see him post op? Also, are they constantly renewing Violet's contract and he is still getting paid/ treated like a player despite having to sit in a hospital all day? That's pretty baller if that's the case. GO GO KT!
Good to hear some good news. I'm guessing Bisu will get a pretty hefty raise. I'm really glad for Stats, and hope Violet, Flash, and Light Girl get well soon.

I know this is suppose to be an upbeat thread, so sorry to be debbie downer here.
At this point in time, who gives a shit about the structure of the league when even the league itself was in question? I think most of us will take all the good news that we can get right about now.
Do you not see the problem here?
maybe just maybe the problem is not with BW and its scene? Financial crisis got to Korea and its time to cut corners? Just guessing.
This is the first time I've heard about Light girl. Even though I found out about her because of a tragedy, the story still makes me smile. I really hope she can make it through

Very bad analogy. BW is not college basketball ........... and SC2 definitely isn't the NBA if BW is college basketball. Besides, isn't NBA really better?

Those who qualify for the OSL/MSL proper get some form of prize money. They also get bonuses for winning matches. Depending on the individual contracts, players may get bonuses for winning streaks, winning a certain number of games in a season, winning Ace games, getting past a certain round in the OSL/MSL etc.
Assuming 1000:1 Won:USD, which is close enough, first place is $40,000.
Further, players often have success clauses in their contracts where they get a bonus if they get far enugh in a major tournament. Finally, if nothing less, winning events boosts their popularity and hence their power to renegotiate for higher salaries.

ok ok, granted but I probably could have worded it better and not been such a dick. However, I still think that the prestige is worth more than the prize money.
Good news! The doomsday predictions for Korean SC in other threads is ridiculous. SC is by all means a national sport in Korea. It's not going anywhere any time soon.

That all dependents on the individual. Some people value money more, and some, their rise in fame & reputation. Can't really generalise something like that according to your own views.

Way to not get my point, which was you don't go to an event then tell the people there you wouldn't watch the shit they watch.
Very good to hear news like this when we've been so depressed in the BW forum lately. If major corporations are re-signing six-figure salaries for their players, they clearly don't think the scene is going away anytime soon, I don't see why we should think it is either.
As long as the 3 sponsorless teams can successfully merge with a new sponsor, and as long as Jaedong doesn't throw off the balance even more by joining KT or SKT, we should have a thriving Proleague next season too. Looking forward to it.
For the fricking win! "Light, having heard the news, immediately visited a local hospital to make blood donation towards the girl's surgery" - Light girl is TOTALLY going to enjoy that blood. For now, time to dive in!

I translated the "OGN commentator Um Jae Gyung opens up about the current state of the scene" article found here http://esports.dailygame.co.kr/news/read.php?id=49364. I'm not too good a translating, and I didn't really check it over carefully so please forgive me of the bad quality . Should I just leave it here or do I make another thread? I'm a noob here :p
Commentator Um Jae Gyung has given some advice regarding the apparent danger esports (BW) is in.
Commentator Um, in a telephone interview with DES on the 29th said "Instead of looking at the scene negatively because of the apparent danger it is in and blaming others for it, we should try harder to make a more fun league, and a more fun esports for the future."
4 days ago, Commentator Um posed this on Twitter "The eSports scene started with nothing." He tweeted "Depressing news is all over the eSports scene but I don't worry too much. That choice is in the buyers, aka tha fans so there's no reason to blame anyone" He said as he started to talk about the early days of eSports
Um started commentating even before Ongamenet was created in a kid's cartoon channel named tooniverse that was brodcasting starcraft leagues. "There were no game channels at first. We just took a ping-pong table that was rolling around somewhere inside the tooniverse company building and put a black cloth over it to use for stage setup and had a very small prize pool. It was just for fun, a small, weird event" He reminisced.
So he explained that the current situation is not a danger through comparing. "In the eyes of a person who started with 0 won, I don't want to even say cheer up to the people who are depressed and saying it's dead from the scene falling from 10,000,000 won (T/N: $10,000 aprox.) to 9,000,000 won ($T/N $9,000 aprox.)" He tweeted.
In the telephone interview with DailyESports, Um explained "A team may disband because of many reasons from the sponsors. The important things are the coaching staff and the players that make up a game team. These guys are able to be players thanks to the system that allows them to be absorbed into other teams easily like the Estro situation."
If there is a disappointing point, it is the fact that one of the sponsors that is pulling away from their teams is the gaming cable channel MBCGame. "It is important culturally and industrially to have cable channels broadcast gaming content. The broadcast is a power mechanism as we are able to showcase our player's games to more places and people, therefore hardcore fans, people interested in the content and the people around them are able to take interest in it."
He also analysed the reason danger has appeared to us. One of the reasons that game teams lost their attractiveness to sponsors is because of the match-fixing with the illegal betting sites, and the other is the dispute between Kespa and Blizzard Ent about the broadcasting rights. The clean image that sponsors wanted was destroyed by the match-fixing in the world of competition and the disputes were taken all the way to court so the chances for synergy (T/N Not sure about my translations here) was reduced.
Commentator Um confessed his wishes to see leagues and eSports programs that people want to see. When Starcraft leagues were first being made, "Nobody predicted that the industry would grow, but it achieved a dream bigger than a dream (T/N: That's how he said it). He said, "When you talk of success in most industries, especially content-based industries, success is not just capturing the niche, hardcore fans but it has to have the ability to attract people that are just passing by."
It was possible for sponsors to create teams because there were not only fans that watched, but because that scene had the ability to attract people who watched occasionally. Creating more leagues and more content is important, but it's crucial to care about the quality of the games, history between players, and to create contents that give viewers a sense of enjoyment while watching.
Commentator Um says "I would be lying if I said I'm not disappointed about the sponsors pulling away from their game teams, but isn't it better than the times when we would have tournaments on top of a ping pong table with a black cloth on it? When danger is upon us, we need to analyse why carefullly and then we need to use this as a chance to capture that eyes of mainstream viewers."

This is some decent news but the problem is, scbw in Korea is the only place where it exists, the game it self is way outdated and the market has no where to go but down due to it only existing in one place in the world. So as this is better news for KT fans, unfortunately as time goes on it will get worse and worse until it is no more which is sad because scbw is so entertaining to watch and the story lines behind pro league matches as well as OSL or an MSL are so full of excitement. Regardless, thanks for posting the article.
100k for Stats? I suppose it's more of a reward than anything?
If KT were to offer 100k to players that are likely to be displaced they could probably snag someone a lot more skilled.
Still, despite the gloom around some teams, it's nice to know that at least a few teams are fully committed. I wonder if any coaches are going to get fired, though.

48 wins, including 6 straight to finish the playoffs. Who are they going to get that's better?

China's where it's at. Got cockblocked by the hurricane typhoon once, but it's on a positive trend.

I don't think it's realistic that BW gets huge e-sports dollars in the west, but I think it could pretty easily grow to 5-10 times its current size if the BW community shilled it a little harder and sponsored more tournaments and advertised them outside the BW section of TL.

China's too enamored of WC3 and DotA to care much about SCBW. I can't fault them for it either. WC3's fucking amazing, and I'm glad it still exists somewhere in the world (similar to Korea and SCBW, really). I'll go ahead and admit that I could definitely live without DotA, though.

I think it'd be okay for him to go to Khan, because Stork is slumping (As usual, but he slumps a lot) and KHAN needs a zerg. It wouldn't be imbalanced at all, it may even balance the teams more. If Jaedong does go to KHAN though, STX would need a few more consistent and solid players for a proper 1-2 punch with Bogus.

Oh, yeah, Jaedong worth more than 100k, I was just saying that the raise could be better put toward acquiring someone of J's caliber.

But China's a big market regardless and there are enough BW fans. It's like saying Americans care too much about baseball/basketball/football to care about Hockey, when there is a sizable hockey fanbase.
Now, what's more in question is their purchasing power.

I know this is suppose to be an upbeat thread, so sorry to be debbie downer here.
At this point in time, who gives a shit about the structure of the league when even the league itself was in question? I think most of us will take all the good news that we can get right about now.
Do you not see the problem here?
maybe just maybe the problem is not with BW and its scene? Financial crisis got to Korea and its time to cut corners? Just guessing.

There is a reason why I posted what I posted on this thread. So far everything has been gloom and doom. But this thread shows that despite enviromental conditions, whatever they may be, some people are living it up very well. You don't give players 100% payraise if you're suffering from economic crisis. You don't resign a player who hasn't even been part of your team for a while because you have no money. You don't give your star player more than the combined salaries of player #2 and #3 in the sport if you have no money.
Yes, if it's a case of everyone having no money, it would be one thing. But the rich obviously are rolling in money with huge salary bumps.
Thank you for this thread! Uplifting threads are always a nice change of pace from the gloomy and hack n' slash headlines that seem to draw people's attention so much better T_T

I believe from the last FA thing he stated that he wouldn't leave his team for any price unless he wasn't resigned. Something along those lines.

It's so nice to read happy or at least not sad news ^_^ Thank you OpticalShot I miss some of these things amid trying to keep up with two games and my life. It's so refreshing to not read any negatively oriented news. (Except Light Girl who I obviously hope the best for )
Thanks a lot for this round-up of awesome. Good threads are hard to come by in BW lately :\ With all the bad news something good has to happen soon. Will look forward to more of these threads

Hes getting paid more than 100k
But he isn't going to be re-signed since his team is disbanding =/.
Thanks for all this info, this is indeed mostly bright news, except for the poor Light girl, I hope she can recover speedily, that's a harsh bit of treatment.
I dont know this lightgirl, but i have to admire her dedication. She is in a tough time right now, so i hope she can get better and will be able to cheer for her favorvite player once again. The news about her makes me actually sad, and i hope she will get better. Normally i only say this for players or people i like but, LightGirl hwaitiiing. Get better girl!
