Update 2:
- lots of new maps/players have been translated ;
- you can now translate some text directly through the main page.

--

Update 1:
- you can now access a main page which allows you to submit any url to be "progamized" ;
- a little frame on top of the progamized website allows you to go back to the main page anytime. Frames suck, but on a site translation tool I think they're ok ;
- the script now translates "Park Sun Jung1" to Zergman, since most korean sites use this to distinguish him from JulyZerg. Thanks to Live2Win for the tip ;
- the script now also handles sites with frames, like ongamenet.com (thanks to Resonate for making me notice this btw).

---

So I’ve been working on a little project for a few days. I thought it would be cool to have a tool which takes a korean progaming-related website and translates all the progamer names into their nicknames, as well as maps and a few other things (team names, league names etc.).

I’ve been working a few hours on it during the last few days. If you guys think it’s useful I’ll try to improve it (it’s more like a beta version right now).

Okay, let's get to serious stuff. Here are a few samples (*spoiler* some of them contain today’s MSL results), to make yourself an idea:
- FighterForum main page. You can see the winners’ of today’s games in the top right part, a schedule of tomorrow’s games with maps, etc ;
- Today’s MSL results on FiFo. This is the news corresponding to the results of today’s games ;
- Another example: some proleague match results from last week. Note that some maps are still in korean, cause I’ve not implemented all of them yet.
- PGR21 main page. You can see PGR21’s overall and byrace progamer ranking.
- PGR21’s full overal ranking. Number of points, number of games played, wins, losses, win percent. Click on any name to get detailed results (who he beat, who he lost to, and when).
- Example: PGR21's Reach’s detailed stats ;
- Kespa ranking.

You should be able to freely browse the “progamized” website, but links inside flash animations or popup links might fail (in the case of FiFo, the links to the live reports in the top right part don’t currently work because it uses some javascript.)

A few notes:
- as stated above, some translations are yet to be implemented: some player names are still in korean, and also lots of map names ;
- it’s not totally reliable (and it’s still a beta) so you might get some 404 errors while browsing through Progamizer, or be redirected to the “original” website.

I also plan to create an input form on http://rpgamers.free.fr/progamizer/progamizer.php (when no url is given as parameter), which would allow any url to be “progamized”.

Okay that’s pretty much it. Tell me what you guys think (pretty useful, totally useless), and what bugs you find.

interesting idea
i wonder if after you filtered it, and then ran it through babelfish, it might give something readable.

probably would be much more readable esp. if babel didn't have to deal with words like "zealot" "goon" or whatever koreans call these common bw things.

ROFL gold :D

I do not know, this is something new, and amazing, I mean, PoP just came and tell us that he is developing a new tool (or sort of), and it is amazing. Things like this makes me realize that SC is going to break the 20YearsOld barrier ;D

I've got an Idea to difference July from Zergman..

I mean it is pretty obvious, can you make an script so the program or the "script" can read first the team (July is on POS and Zergman is on Samsung KHAN) so that way you can make a difference between them :D

i think even with the really bad translation service, you can sometimes get the gist of what happened.

maybe if a korean helped out in translating common bw terms. for example "the monk" shows up sometimes in between players names. it might just mean "beat" (e.g. boxer beat pusan).
And this hot potato has vanished into thin air.

This is great, good work man. Its really to bad that sites such as PGTour and WGTour have attempted to breing in the Korean community by doing translations and such but huge sites where Pro-Gaming is seriously a sport, ie Korea, hasn't created English translations to their sites, which would surely add much more popularity from the foreign gaming communities.

This little project however would seriously make me visit these sites more because now I can actually see alittle about whats being posted - not the bulk of it, but the important things. 1 Step closer to better community -

so you can put that in. But leave the other in too, incase they don't.

good idea, still I think that the problem is that the algorithm can't know for sure if the team name found is really related to the player. Though an approach could be made following this rule: "if team name is found reaaally close to the player name, then that's enough proof", stuff like this could happen:

"and that was said by Zergman; POS coach, however, said that..."

algorithm says: wow, names are separated only by 2 characters, then it's July since POS is July's team. (bonus problem: what would be the most efficient constant number of separator characters to decide?)

This problem can be solved if the algorithm knows the format of the text, so it can be achieved in particular cases: for example if algorithm knows how they separate name/team on Kespa ranking, then it knows which team belongs to which player. Too expensive though...I wouldn't do it for this tiny particular case, the loss is little or nothing.

Hey I'm not Illi or Ashur so perhaps I'm wrong, perhaps there's a good solution to this! Keep on it! I smell automata incoming!!

Yeah I thought about that. But the team name isn't always next to the player name. :/

I'll try to work on it anyway.

Actually it didn't take me that much. The biggest task would have been to store every korean name/nickname correspondance. Of course I didn't want to add every single entry myself, so I made a script which browsed pgr21's website and generated a PHP file out of it.

Then basically the process consists in reading the url given as parameter, getting the source html out of it, translating it, and then printing it. I used regular expressions to make sure the links are correctly translated so that you can browse a site directly under progamizer.

Overall, I'd say 3-4 hours.

Good idea. I can do that easily.

TrentLane > yeah, that might work, but that sounds a tad too unreliable. Let's say POS and Khan are facing. The original output of the report news looks something like :
POS 1-0 Khan
[JulyZerg's korean name] (Z, 5) WIN < Map > Stork (P, 11)

Now you can tell it's July cause POS is the left team, but if the algorithm works like "if Khan is close enough to the name, it's Zergman, otherwise it's July", it will fail.

Anyway, I think it's not too hard guessing who's who yourself in most situations. It's better than having the wrong name written and being confused I think.

i think they just use the english words for those, but spell them pheonetically with korean characters. if this is the case, babblefish would be fucked.

This is just a guess, however. A guess based on the fact that when i listen to the korean commentators, i often notice, among the steam of korean i can't understand, words like "factory" "starport" and "firebat."

I don't know if this it is actually because the game calls them that, or if koreans just know that because their english is generally better than our Korean.

can any korean speakers clear this up for me?

If you hear something like assimilator, then it's probably assimilator

Every in-game unit is called by it's English name, but most game terms are Korean words. For example, a player's natural expansion is called an "ap-ma-dang" and a rush is "cho ban"

I'd love to help you, but I don't know alot of terms and I don't know any Koreans T_T
After watching VODs for almost 4 years, I've picked up a little bit of Korean terms, can understand some basic sentences and how to read Hangul

I guess I do know more than an average foreigner watching a VOD, but not that much more ^^

As FakeSteve said above, you should probably mean about the same-name thing between Julyzerg and Zergmnan.

He made that when the name of the progamer appears (Is it July or is it Zergman) this text will appear
"July or Zergman" just like that, anyways, We can always figure it out by ourselves since:

+ July is at the top of the rank, Zergman isn't even top10.
+ July is in POS while Zergman is in Samsumg KHAN.

Anyways, this is great. Go PoP~!

You can see that #30 is July or Zergman1 -> They wrote it down like live2win said =)

Update:
- you can now access a main page which allows you to submit any url to be "progamized" ;
- a little frame on top of the progamized website allows you to go back to the main page anytime. Frames suck, but on a site translation tool I think they're ok ;
- the script now translates "Park Sun Jung1" to Zergman, since most korean sites use this to distinguish him from JulyZerg. Thanks to Live2Win for the tip ;
- the script now also handles sites with frames, like ongamenet.com (thanks to Resonate for making me notice this btw).

The next update will most likely feature more map/player translations.

Enjoy.

Pop, can you put in a text box that will 'progamise' a small amount of text that can be pasted in there from the clipboard? That'd really really help =]

Update 2:
- lots of new maps/players have been translated ;
- you can now translate some text directly through the main page.

Hmm actually sometime they use < map name > 2 and sometime < map name >2 (without any space), and I'm only translating one of them. This should be easily fixed.

It does translate the other maps/players at least, doesn't it?

Hmm yeah it does that but it should still translate the text into the bottom textarea. (Of course it doesn't translate korean except for the progamer nicknames and stuff. This ascii korean text probably doesn't contain any "progamizable" word.)

Oh and thanks for the domain name. You could've just bookmarked it tho.

I've got an Idea to difference July from Zergman..

I mean it is pretty obvious, can you make an script so the program or the "script" can read first the team (July is on POS and Zergman is on Samsung KHAN) so that way you can make a difference between them :D

Dont get it ? Does they have the same name ?

Now, I found out how they "difference" July from Zergman.

If you try to search around, or well that's what I noticed, they add a "Z" next to Zergman's nickname..

박성준 = Julyzerg
박성준Z = Zergman.

Edit: Sorry to revive this thread, but It needs to be done to avoid confusion or w/e.

Question 1: What does 'programize site' do ? Does it only opens it?

Question 2: Why some korean characters are not being translated properly?

Anyway, very very good work

I think I pretty much explained it in the first post?

Question 2: Why some korean characters are not being translated properly?

Well the goal is not to translate korean into english, but only the progamer nicknames, also maps, tourneys names and things like that. This way you can get results from FiFo (www.fighterforum.com) more easily, you can read the kespa ranking, etc.

Some nicknames and maps are yet to be translated though, of course.
