This is for a project in economics. I start with $100,000 to invest in at least three stocks listed on NYSE or NASDAQ. No shorting stocks, no day trading.
As I'm totally clueless as to how the market's doing (and how it works in general), which stocks should I buy (and why)?
EDIT: Poem I wrote for English (on Crime and Punishment). Doesn't really belong here but I figure I'll take up some space because the OP's kind of shit... (hopefully this helps in respect to overall shitiness...?)
There lived an old hag and her life was so grim. She stole people’s money – they cried at her whim. But I paid her flat tax And then fashioned an axe So now her life’s prospect is rather quite dim!
I start to her house – it’s now past six-o’-clock. I tap at the door and she opens the lock. Without much ado, I slice her in two And give her poor sister (as well) a good knock.
But what of the clothes, all bloodied and stained! And all her grand jewelry I gladly obtained? Both gold and my sock Are now under a rock. I guess you could say that my conscience is strained.
And hark, the police are now questioning me, Invading my mind and my own privacy (A bothersome lot). My mind’s all I’ve got But they tear me apart from my poor sanity.
And plus there’s a chap whom my sister will wed Who really just wants to get with her in bed. But just hear him speak And their future looks bleak (And my friend kindly offered to bash in his head).
Some mad crazy people I happen to seek A little whore-girl and a child-loving freak. Of the nonce I distress, To the girl I confess Of my rabid and axe-wielding murderous streak.
And to the police I reluctantly go I walk in the station and say, “Hey, you there, so… I killed the old snake (Perhaps by mistake?) So please let me off easy now that you know!”
Siberia’s now where I’m destined to stay For seven long years. With my whore-girl I pray That I won’t freeze my butt off Or get my head cut off… I guess seven years isn’t too far away!

Buy an equal amount (in dollars) of every stock in the Dow. The market is at a really low point. If you invest in the Dow as a whole, you should come out ahead.

I had to do this once, I just went with ones that had cool letters for their names. I didn't do too well though.

this is really tough, as it's hard for anyone to pick any three stocks. pick companies that you like, in industries that you think will do well.
For example, if you think video games are going to do well, then you should probably pick up blizzard stock (or whatever company owns eve possibly -_-)
If you think tech is going to do well, broadcom/cisco if you think defense is going to do well: rayethon, Boeing. etc.

OMFG. I played this in 4th and 5th grade with my class. Ez. Just use all your money to get dow jones and win. thats what I did :D

I did something like this way back in high school. I invested like 80% of my money into a stock that was FIVE CENTS per share. It stayed at 5 cents for like 2 months, and on the LAST DAY of our game, that stock went up to TWELVE CENTS. I had like... Hundreds of thousands of shares, so I beat everyone out by a long shot. =D
|
how long is this? if it's longterm just invest in some index-tracking ETFs, hard to beat it. bond/stock split depends on how well you can sleep at night

(assuming the OP is doing the same simulation I am)

your best bet ... is randomly choosing shit no joke D:

Put all $100,000 on ATVI easy money! That is Activizion-Blizzard btw.
|
Don't invest in a thing and by the end of the game the 100K would place you well above average in your class.
|
imo since market is so crappy, invest all into bank and collect intrest to win

At least you're not like my friend, who's at ~$20k now and nearly last in NY state. Edit: He's actually at $6,122.84 now and 2nd last in NY

LOL Kinky is referring to me, I am literally the second to last team on the stock market game (a team from stuyvesant high school). The reason was that we shorted 8500 shares of GE just to spite our teacher cause he invested in GE in real life. We got fucked in the ass big time lol. We basically shorted when GE was just about to go up. At least you know you're not doing as bad as us =p
Cash Balance: $6,122.84 Total Equity: $62,869.84 Region Rank: 1522 out of 1523 Region Trade Type: END OF DAY

short everything you can lolol
i'd buy mineral stocks people buy gold stocks in case of fears of recession another good one to look into are alternative energy groups and biotech

I remember doing this in middle school. My teammates didn't want to invest in EA, which ended up tripling in value over the four months we did this =\
We ended up investing in really stable stocks and walked out with just a sliver more than we started with, once you figured the interest. (Don't do this.)

well a month isn't a long time at all anything can happen you're literally best served by going with your gut do you get anything for winning? any penalty for doing exceptionally badly? depending on that you could go with some exchange rate bets or gold like someone mentioned earlier.
i assume dividends are taken into account on your return. just drop that shit in some random stock you feel like. pick a random day next week, go find the top 6 gainers, roll a dice, pick one of them. momentum baby~! empirically observed, ezpzlmnsqz
