One more thing about Thief 2:
Considering that each and every mission is goddamn huge (seriously, I think I don't know any other game where you sit so long on one mission/level), and many missions have quite the "non-standard level design" (i.e. are kind of weird, interesting but weird), it can often be hard to reach your objective or to find out what you should do next. Often you have to search a lot, go back all the way, search again, etc... plus you have to take some notes for yourself. If you're easily frustrated by that sort of thing, then just play Thief 1 and 3 which are much less "eccentric" in terms of level design.
Not few people prefer T2 over T1 though... T2 gives you much more to do (and many more ways to do it by using items in different ways, by offering more possibilities to move around in a level, etc...), more to discover and offers much more content and variety, but it's just such a huge game it can be a bit daunting, especially if you're playing it like a power-gamer wanting quick results, hehe.

Arcamum is trash tbh, such a let-down seeing as it had many of the fallout people on the team.

How exactly was Arcanum trash?

It had a really nice setting, decent soundtrack, decent character customisation and enjoyable dialogue. It has its problems, sure, but what crpg doesn't?

Bob - If you do get Arcanum - get the resolution mod fix~!

Whilst by todays standards, System Shock 1 graphics are pretty bad, I did think that the story line (especially the side plots if you play on full complexity - which you should!) of SS1 where a notch better than in SS2. The SS2 story isnt bad at all either, I just think SS1 was even better. Play both if you can.

As has been mentioned though, knowledge of SS1 isnt required to play SS2.

Some more suggestions:

If you like adventures, then try Grim Fantango and the Monkey Islands. And if you like really old school adventures, play all of the original Zork! text adventures. It takes a little getting used to, but I really enjoyed them. Once you get into it, the experience can be a lot better than any high graphics wanna-be game.

If you like action adventures, try Crusader: No Remorse, followed by Crusader: No Regret. Play them in that order though - the first one is better, and the second one can be too difficult without knowing some of the tricks from the first. Cool gameplay, some thinking and the story isnt half bad either.

Dungeon keeper 1 and 2 still works, definitely no other game that plays like them and they are good (Majesty plays a bit like them but its still off by a lot). Populous the beginning is also good.

What kind of a character did you play?

The experience with Arcanum is highly dependent on what kind of character you chose to play going through. If you played a diplomat, and managed to unravel the mysteries of the deep world, it was a gaming experience like none other. If you played a technologist you got to explore the world and collect schematics for all sorts of exotic mechanisms, and pick up a fair amount of the story as you went. If you played a utility-based mage, you got some pretty boringly easy combat, but your character probably had enough intelligence to get through most of the interesting stuff in the plot, and you got to try some pretty interesting things with your higher level magical powers. If you played a combat character, you very possibly missed a large portion of what made this game epic, because the combat, quite frankly, was not one of the game's high points.

Of course, this is one of the high points of the game. You can play vastly different character types for a vastly different experience. Your character shapes the world in a way not seen in any other game--the only game that comes close is Fallout, which is still distinctly different. In some ways, its a contrast with Planescape: Torment. In PS:T, you watch the story unfold. In Arcanum, you make the story happen.

If there's any real fault with this, I'd say its that the experience of the game is largely weighted toward having social stats. How much fun you have with the game is almost directly related to how many of your character's stat points you put into Intelligence/Charisma/Beauty.

Dwarf Fortress is very Dungeon Keeper-esque. Personally, I like Dwarf Fortress's complexity more than Dungeon Keeper's cheeky style.

SHTUP is looking like a good way to clean up System Shock 2's old look. I haven't followed its development in a while though, so I don't know how complete it is yet.

Deus Ex is soo good indeed.

HOMM3 is also oldschool and i recommed it very much.

Doom is another must play FPS.

I also liked playing a lot games that were screen-scrolling i think? particulary a game where you had a shuttle-like ship and collected powerups and killed things in the levels. I remember the first level was jungle like. Unfortunately i have completly forgotten how the game was called. ;(

oh btw simcity is good too but i think its a f*cking hard game

I have played HOMM3 a lot ( decent game but not that deep if you can only play vs comp )
And Doom was one of my first video games :p
( they are in the list in the spoiler at the end of my post )
I have also played a bit sim city but never really enjoyed it. Maybe i was too young and the game too difficult.

Dunno what is the last game. Looks like a gradius like-game.
I love those shooters ( raptor, gradius, shooting macross etc .. ) but damm that's hard and frustrating.

Can you point me into the right direction for how to get the 2 Crusader games to work on modern OSses?
I have tried DOSBox, native Windows, DOS compatibiltiy mode, and VDMSound, Wine/Cedega and probably some other shit but I couldn't get these games working anymore.
I loved them both when they came out... and I'd like to replay them.
Hmm... now that I've wrote this, it's been a while since I last tried it, maybe a more recent version of DOSBox has magically solved the issues with the game?

lol.
Wait until you play Thief 2, then you will also need a second keyboard because 105 keys just isn't enough for all binds... or so it seems.

Play it on hard... it's better. In games like this, a high difficulty also adds to the atmosphere - after all what good is a horror/survival shooter if you blaze through the levels tearing apart everything?
But you'll have really low ammo and you have to play cautiously. Just so u know.

oh my gosh simcity you just reminded me. i LOVED simcity 2000
oh dear, i'm going to go DL it right now
i was going to do it earlier but decided to try simcity societies instead. it just didn't have the same feel to it (plus it felt uber easy, but maybe it's because i'm older), so i forgot about simcity 2000

thanks for reminding me!

You get a starting boost to different skills. Helps to use the Gamefaqs guides because it's hard to figure out what skills are useful otherwise. http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/185706/14415
