I tried absolut vodka a year ago and to be honest it tastes like gasoline. I don't know if you're suppose to mix it with stuff. I heard smirnoff is a girl's drink and the one time I tried it I was in a strip club, don't know if they watered it down or if it really is a girl's drink. I don't need high end, don't have the money for it. Just wanta get drunk, but I wanta get drunk on something tasty and different. anyone know the diff. between whiskey, rum, gin, and vodka? They taste different... Whiskey is sort of spicier :S I guess. Rum is sugary in general. Gin reminds me of soda. Vodka is like window cleaner. Tequila is like shoe polish. The actual difference is that they're made of different things... Just wikipedia each one. Rum is sugar cane I think, and Vodka is potatoes. In general, I think you should educate yourself on the actual impacts of alcohol on the body... It does permanent brain damage, and will make you slower a little bit at a time each time you have it, so make sure you're okay with that... Other than that... I used to always get Prince Igor's vodka... If you're too lame to drink it straight, then just mix it. You're not fooling anyone into thinking you're the man by drinking a really expensive flavourless/rasberry vodka straight. Polar Ice is supposed to be a top shelf vodka at a good price (it's like 2 bucks more than Igor's) but I didn't really like it too much when I had it. There was no kick, and it just felt weird to drink... I can see why people describe it as 'smooth' though... But where's the fun in that.

that is horrible horrible vodka and overpriced smirnoff is total garbage I favor moskovskaya as a cheaper vodka but there are lots of vodkas out there better than smirnoff note that moskovskaya isnt going to be completely clean but its not too 'gasolinish' either imo

As for which vodka, just go to the LCBO and go by price, there's a ton of options and you can get a 26 of something decent for 22-25$.

TBH though, from what you wrote I'm guessing you won't like any straight spirits, so just mix it with coke.

best thing i've had recently: Canton Ginger Liqueur VSOP Cognac Infused with Baby Ginger 80 Proof (40% ABV) Typical Price: About $30 mix the two for an awesome new years. ask your liquor store employees. there is a reason they work there, usually. don't ask what's good, ask what they personally are drinking. they have good taste, usually, and don't spend much $. beer is not just beer. drink omengang three philisophers (8$) for a bottle the size of wine. you will never see beer the same way again. promise. my best advice is avoid the cheap stuff. that doesn't mean every time u pick up vodka you buy grey goose, or that every bottle of wine is more than 15$, or that ever bottle of gin is bombay sapphire. buy these top notch drinks when ur feeling flush and then keep them around. don't just drink 'em in a night or weekend. top of the line is often great, but it takes time to develop a sensitive palate, and to be able to appreciate the differentiation. until then, read reviews, ask questions, and there is no substitute for experience. people spend a lifetime enjoying just whiskey, scotch, wine, or beer. fools rush in. learn what these drinks are made of, how they are made, and learn the vocabulary used to describe them. i cannot detail all that here, now do i know it all. if you have specific questions i maybe can answer. also, every place has local brews of everything (almost). drink local!!!

Vodkas (atleast for people who think absolut tastes like "gasoline") are almost always mixed (at least in North America) with something else, the nice thing is that you can mix vodka with literally almost anything. Plain vodka, especially cheaper plain vodka doesn't have a real strong discernable flavor imo. I most commonly see it mixed in things like sprite, lemonade, punches, orange juice, and jungle juice recipes. Flavored vodkas obviously depend on the flavor, but in my experience you can almost never go wrong with something like sprite. If you dont care much for Vodkas you might prefer rum. Generally you want to avoid plain, clear rums ("light" rums) unless you're simply using it for an ingredient in a margarita or something like that. Rum is made using sugarcane products (esp. molasses) in a mixed process of distillation and fermentation. If the rum is clear that means it has not been aged very long, otherwise it would start to take on the colors (and tastes) of the barrel it was in. Now, since you're going to listen to me and avoid that you have two or three other main options: flavored rums, spiced rums, and dark rums. Flavored rums are easy and generally follow the same rules as flavored vodkas, mix some keylime flavored ParrotBay rum or a Malibu rum with sprite and you'll drink the whole bottle before you know what hit you. Bacardi's flavored rums are significantly stronger and less sweet than Malibu or ParrotBay. I tend to think of them more like a flavored vodka. You were worried however about drinking a "girls drink" so you might want to avoid these drinks since they are probably considered as "girly" (aka so sweet you cant taste the alcohol) as mixed drinks with flavored vodkas. You might instead want to try a spiced rum. A "spiced" rum is usually going to be kind of caramel or gold in color which is (typically) a result of them being aged longer. An example of tasty but cheaper spiced rums would be your normal Captain Morgans or Sailor Jerry's. I like Sailor Jerry's for a cheap, "oh-hey-the-guys-came-over-lets-get-drunk-fast" rum because it is relatively high proof (92 i think?) but it has a nice sweet caramel tasting overtone which makes it easy to throw into a coke or something. If you buy a spiced rum the only thing to watch out for is that some cheaper ones are made by adding color to those nasty "light" rums. Finally we get to my favorite, the "dark" rums. Dark rums are typically aged a bit longer than spiced or golden colored rums and also contain more molasses. I love drinking this straight but you can use it in most rum drinks. My roommates swear by Captain Morgan Tattoo or Private Stock mixed with Dr. Pepper. There are also some very nice rums that are aged but I wouldnt consider dark. Two that come to mind first are some Cuban rums and Bacardi 8. When i went to the Bacardi distillery in San Juan they claim the initial "Cuba Libre" meant Bacardi 8 and coke. Since you're in Canada you're lucky enough to have access to Cuban rums such as Havana Club (among my personal favorites). I find the Havana Club rums (and Cuban rums in general) to have a much clearer, crisp, well defined taste than others. Gin- I hate gin so I know the least about it. All I know is that all my friends and i think it tastes like pinecones+a kick in the nuts (its actually made from juniper berries i think). The only thing I see anyone put it in is a Gin and tonic which i usually think of as 1part gin (tanqueray usually), 4-5 parts tonic water, and a slice of lime. Like i said though, I hate gin and dont know too much about the variety so, you're on you're own for anything else. Whiskey- The manly mans drink. Whiskey is a really broad term that also includes anything you'd call scotch or bourbon. Most people I know like their whiskey "on the rocks" (meaning by itself in a glass w/ ice) or with coke (one of my buddies favorite drinks is the tried and true "Jack and Coke"). Whiskey has a much stronger taste and flavor than vodka, and is nowhere near as as sweet as a rum. In my opinion whiskey tends to have a more savory, musty, taste reminiscent of wood or leather. Generally, as the whiskey gets more expensive the taste becomes "smoother". I prefer really nice rums so i dont drink a ton of whiskey but I hear rave reviews about Jack Daniels' "Gentlemans Jack" and "Single Barrel" varieties, both of which I enjoyed and found to be much smoother than your typical Jack Daniels and far, far smoother than Jim Beem. Regular Crown Royal (and of course the nice varieties) are also nice quality smooth rums for their price, as are Johnnie Walker Red and Black Labels (black is much better than red). I'd also highly recommend looking for something I found last time i was in Montreal called "Sortilege" which was a mix of whiskey and a maple syrup liquer. Edited to include whiskey section

For a cheap whiskey I really like Glen Grant, or any other Speyside whiskey. For a more expensive whiskey I love Laproaig but it has a quite distinctive taste and a lot of people think it tastes like shit :/ But if you go for it anyway don't spoil this fine liquor with coke, drink it with water

anyway i ended up with a bottle of finlandia(finland vodka). Not the most creative of names but it was good. Made myself a variation of a screw driver and having a blast. Next time I will use less vodka in my cocktail though as it's a bit strong. i'm thinking of adding additional drinks and flavors like liqeurs in the future but thanks to everyone who've responded. Oh, and something I learned about Grey Goose. The creator, Sidney Frank, intentionally overpriced it so the pubic would think it's better than the average brand. Guess what? People fell for it. They're basically paying more for the same quality vodka as other brands.
