I don't know how long those headphones on ipods are mp3 players are suppose to last or usually lasts. During the past year i've broke like 3-4 already. I dunno if i'm just misusing it or w/e. I'd wrap my headphone wire around the ipod so it doesn't get tangled up, and i stick it in my pocket. I'm not sure if while the headphones are tangled it breaks their inner wires, or if its because it rubs against my leg while its in my pocket especially that plastic/hard part that contains the plug to the ipod (dunno if u know what i mean)...
PS: the last one i broke was a JVC, and it costed like $5 in wal-mart. Maybe because i keep buying bad quality headphones... Anyone want to recommend me some good ones? oo
I can't think of any other reasons why i keep breaking headphones...
=== Usually when it breaks, one of the earplugs don't have sound, from my last 2 headphones, its always been the left earplug that didn't work. Dunno if its just a coincidence. Other times, the plastic falls out on the earplug, the circular thing with holes in it.

I have problems like this too, I actually broke 3 pairs in the past month. One of which was my headset... Just go buy a really expensive pair and get a 2 year/2 pair replacement warranty. It's what I did. It really helped because I go through a lot of headphones.

Price-range?
Headphones can get very, very expensive.

Don't ever buy the expensive earbuds man. They will break just like the rest. The best pair I ever bought were $11 sony earbuds, try those out

if you listen on max volume 24/7 they tend to break faster?? :O

go to dell.com and buy some $15 creative labs bud headphones. cant think of the model number right now but theyre 20x better than the apple oem, cheap and theyve gone through a lot of wear and tear.

Not usually, usually it's percussive vibration/wear (aka you hit them a lot)

nah that wouldn't cause it, neither does excessive use. it's just how you well you treat them, even if you think you are handling them carefully etc. there's random shit that can happen that will mess them up.
my last pair lasted over a year and they were just ones that came with the ipod and it took stepping on one of the earbuds and having a cat chew the wires for them to stop working properly. my newer ones that i've had for a year now are losing some sound in one of the sides but that's probably because i sleep with them everynight.
don't wrap them around the ipod so that the part that plugs into the ipod is bent, that will end up ripping some of the plastic cover and afaik isn't good for them. don't drop them or toss them around etc. and they should last awhile.

Omg, I just washed my Sony earphones in the washing machine and the drying machine. The head came off. They retail for 60 dollars.

Psh, in the past four years or so I have easily gone through about 5 or 6 pairs of headsets.
Plantronics Audio 90 $30 Altec Lansing AHS502 $70 Altec Lansing AHS602 $100 Steelsound 5Hv2 (x2) $100 Some Sony earphones $20
Once I get paid on wednesday though I am picking up some Sennheiser HD555s though with a clipon mic, I've heard that's an awesome combo for gaming.

Buy a soldering kit and learn how to fix it yourself :>

Headphones are cheaply made - its mostly the wrapping, bending of the wiring that will cause that problem, as this stresses and than breaks the connections... Don't really have a suggestion, if anything try to find some with thick cords, otherwise dont wrap them too tight when you're storing them. Also, there are jackets now w/ internal sleeves for your headphones, those keep the wires straightened out, although thats more of a fall/winter thing.
