Piss me off. So the first laptop I got was two years ago this christmas. Just about eight months after owning it I have to return it to HP because something went wrong hardware wise. Ok, not 'too' bad, considering how often I used it and it is a laptop these things happen, right?
Well, first off. HP 'somehow' lost my laptop. So they sent me a new one, a much better one. I wasn't home at the time so when I got back I was glad to have my laptop back and it being better. I was slightly annoyed at it having vista but.. what ya gonna do about a free laptop? I mean it was much better than my old one. So I was happy enough with it.
So now, in July, pretty much the same time frame as my last laptop, it has once again died. And the same thing has happend, just a different route. The problems that occured prior to sending my old laptop in were the wireless wasn't turning on, and sometimes the laptop wouldn't even boot past BIOS. This time, the laptop would lockup after having colored lines across the screen and that led into the computer not getting past BIOS at all, with maybe the occasional time where it would boot, but thereafter only get assaulted by the colored lines, lockup and once again not start up.
SO, I've come to the conclusion that HP laptops suck balls, don't buy them. Even my parents laptop, which is also an HP, had to be sent in for almost the SAME problem as my old laptop. So in the course of a about two years, three HP laptops have had the same related problem. Random bad luck? Maybe, but probably not.
Moral of the story is stay away from HP laptops. Their desktops are ok, the laptops suck balls.

My friend's HP laptop overheated like CRAZY. I think he had it for about 8 months like yours before it started cooking his fingers whenever his hands touched the keyboard. He said it was literally hot enough to fry an egg. He sent it in to get fixed last month. HP laptops are a no-no.

yeah, they get fairly hot. A cooling pad is a must, and even then it gets pretty warm.

Ew~ Vista.
Yeah, but I have to say that HP laptops are pretty bad. At least they look nice...right? Right? Anyways, my cousin is just going to help me build a desktop from scratch, some Barebones PC or something like that. I've heard if you have the time and patience it's the best way to go.

my friend's HP laptop's motherboard went wack so he had to send it in to get it fixed... ouch

I have HP pavillion, 1 year and 2months old i think. So far so good. The only problem that i have is that wireless reciever is quite weak...
Never forget to clean the coolers and it won't overhear. Heck, i would leave my laptop on for a week (downloading stuff) and nothing. And I hope it stays that way

Speaking of laptops - my acer one just died and i was in the market for a new one. Was thinking of a HP one. Not anymore.
I heard sony vaio is pretty pricey but worth it.

Vaio's are pretty terrible. There's nothing about them performance wise that makes a difference, Sony's customer support is the worst of all major brands, and they're way way overpriced.

Building from scratch is the best way to go. You dont get any of that prepackaged bullshit that comes with bought computers, and you can customize it far beyond what you can if you buy one. Get a cool computer case and flashy lights and a 500gb HDD lol. Its rather easy to build one too I did it when i was 15, any problems i had were software not hardware. (my Mobo died once though because it got overheated due to bad cooling, then i got more fans and its been fine for a year).

I forgot to add that my HP desktop has been working wonderfully for a year+

I've had no problems with HP desktops, they work just fine. And if something did go wrong their much easier to tend too than a laptop. I've had two hp desktops, first one for around 3 years before getting a newer one for no one reason other than wanting a new one, and than the current one for around the same time. but i've been using laptops so i haven't needed to get a new desktop.
once my current laptop craps out again after getting it fixed this time, and since the warranty will be gone in a few months, i think im going to look into building my own just because i can get what i want that way and it's supposed to be much cheaper.

I have a Compaq Presario, which is technically HP now, and it's great. Maybe they're manufactured differently, because mine has given me almost no trouble over nearly three years now. Good, solid machine, that has served my extensive usage really well.
