President Trump's approval rating among Republicans is north of 90%. His fundraising numbers for the 2020 election are stratospheric. Sentiment among his party regarding the Russian collusion investigation is very strong; the belief is that the investigation was cooked up in order to handicap his potential presidency. Now, an impeachment inquiry begins after over two years of calls from Democrats to impeach Trump for various reasons. Leading the charge is the liberal media, much reviled by the right but capable of occupying the public's attention with stories of scandal. President Trump's base is particularly aggrieved, beset by a powerful media and anti-Trump components of the federal law enforcement and intelligence communities.

Prior to the 2016 election, private militia units trained for the event of a Hillary Clinton win. The Second Amendment people feel very strongly about the individual right to keep and bear arms. As did the Founding Fathers. The president warns of a "civil war like fracture" if he is removed from office.

Further revelations about Trump's communications with foreign leaders regarding Biden come out, convincing not only the House to impeach but the Senate to convict. The Senate convicts with a secret ballot to avoid political fallout for individual members. President Trump refuses to concede. He calls on the military and state National Guard units to defend him; this is to no avail, as their leaders refuse cooperation.

With his back to the wall, the president exercises his legal authority to call out the unorganized militia as its commander in chief. He reasons that the execution of the laws of the United States is being obstructed as a result of an impeachment predicated on neither a high crime nor a misdemeanor; and in fact, the impeachment is predicated on pretextual and malicious plots.

Many militia members refuse to obey the call, but many, able to furnish their own arms, supportive of the President and more or less geographically unified, answer the call. Thus begins the Second Civil War.

I know this is a blog post, so I'm not sure if you're being purposely hyperbolic for effect. Yeah, Donald Trump has talked about his supporters possibly starting another Civil War, but this isn't the first (or hundredth) idiotic remark he's made about anything. Impeached or not, Trump will finish his first term as president, and we'll see what happens in the next election.

Labeling whatever is to come as “the Second Civil War” is stupid for a variety of reasons. Not only is it historically inaccurate, unnecessarily hyperbolic, and entirely too early, it gives credence to the self-proclaimed identity of those who would raise arms against the US should an election not go their way. The folks you deign to describe would LOVE it if they could get popular support for their being regarded as a second Confederate Army, so keep doing their bidding, I guess.

Why prophecy such a thing? The devastation and loss of life from our civil war was appalling.

I'd be surprised if in the age of streaming and home deliveries anyone took up arms for such a thing against an overwhelming security apparatus. We're mostly lazy, distracted by the rat-race and used to peace. The only way a civil war begins is if there's a loyalty crack within the military and some branches actually stage a coup. I hope for everyone worldwide that it won't happen.

Yeah, I'm sure it's unlikely. There would be real problems of some sort if he were removed from office, though.

The politics of the right especially the far-right isn't about a certain individual or support. Their main purpose is to do whatever it takes to destroy the dems, it's not about who makes the right or logical decision anymore. It's pretty sad but most people are so ignorant and oblivious of the reason beyond the headlines that "news" organizations push out.

And most people includes the current President of the US, the man is absolutely a joke, I honestly think Pence would do a far better job of actually getting something done in office without looking like a fool.

Pence is unlikely to take his position when Trump gets impeached because he's caught up in this mess as well lol.

Also, Trump being impeached doesn't mean he'll even be removed from office. It's likely that Trump will be impeached, but it's all but certain that he won't be removed from office.

This is lazy fan fiction, and ignores the fact that an intact American military can defeat any force in the world. Unless the military breaks apart, there is no civil war.

Am I the only one doubting anything will go forward? Donald only has another year left but he essentially destroyed his image (Not that NY'ers already knew he was a royal asshole) and while dragging the Republican party down with him. And all the talk about a military coup, that is even more unlikely.

It is unlikely for there to be another civil war. One reason is that red counties tend to be rural counties that are agricultural, blue counties tend to be urban. The different counties are tightly intertwined. The blue urban counties require food from the agricultural areas, and the red require industrial equipment forged in the urban areas.

The civil war happened because there were clear boundaries of slave states vs free northern states. And the two boundaries had different economies that allowed them to split. If you suggest there will be a civil war that it would be between gun owners vs government, because gun owners vs non-gun owners does not make sense. Also the pockets of gun owners and non-gun owners is too scattered for them to truly collaborate enough to make a war. What could happen is militia skirmishes vs the military. However, I believe our military to be mostly conservative minded, and would ally with the plight of gun owners.

There could be upheaval across the country. But ultimately, just vote. Honestly people believe the president has more power than they think. Vote for a congressman and women who represent you, that is how a civil society works. Presidential candidates that talk about taking guns are simply talking about their stances, but still have to get past congress. Congress can override executive orders, so just vote.

I think you're right that it would be pockets of skirmishes as opposed to any coordinated rebellion. People could readily form local units though, and one can envision a situation where it cripples the country, if widespread enough. Seems doubtful that the military would actually go in and crush a bunch of insurrections. In this way people would be exercising their right to act as a militia - a dispersed body of citizens that the framers had every intention of empowering to overthrow a tyrannical government.

Agreed. Not even Oregon would actually be able to build a militia to start a civil war. They would be crushed by Oregon probably getting aid from neighboring states like Washington and California to crush any sort of ridiculous war attempt.

What does Oregan have to do with it specifically?

Just look up right-wing militias and Republican walkout. It got comically serious.

Leftists in liberal cities like Portland, Seattle, LA would be attacking each other and burning their liberal cities to the ground within a week.

No unity among the left, too obsessed with identity politics.
Good luck if civil war ever happens, you’ll need it in the big cities.
