I went for yearly physical dcotor's exam, and because of irregular heartbeat I have to go to cardiologist for tests. It felt like a very rushed experience, like I was a product on an assembly line. Without hardly examining me at all the cardiologist booked me for a $400 test and then a $1400 one after. I do have insurance so I hope it's mostly covered (the office said usually they pay 90%), but it's just nerve wracking not knowing if a huge bill is coming or not. I already had to pay $200 for a test due to abnormal liver and I'm supposed to do another one because apparently there were gall bladder polyps. I don't know just feels excessive when I'm basically in good health.

To apologize for my whinings, some music I've found enjoyable:

Good luck with your insurance as well as your test.

Heard from a vet that many docs nowadays are actively trying to sell you stuff to keep you in a paying cycle. These bills are pretty insane.

Tbf irregular heartbeats can be just nothing (my stepdad had some and has no issues whatsoever), but also be a sign that your heart is working improperly. So better safe than sorry.

Yeah specialists don't have the time to examine you and running offices with all that equipment is expensive, they have to pay the bills with tests and procedures. It's not malice but research the crap out of whatever they say you have especially if you're not having troubles. Not that it's a scam but treatment isn't one size fits all and doctors are thinking about what you have and what the options are, but it's up to you to know what's right and make that decision. Tests are one thing but actual interventions especially if you don't need them are something else when there are risks of side effects.

Better than to wait half a year for a test cause queue is too long and live in the unknown if you are okay or dieing in a month. Cause that's what happens with health insurance

Can always call your insurance ahead of time to see what's covered. They may even suggest a cheaper location to get tested that they have an agreement with or are affiliated with.

Yes. Beware private medicine, it attracts sociopaths, particularly in countries where public medicine is also available. There are a lot of quacks in the world as well.

Don't be too quick to take a doctor's word for what you ought to do. In a lot of cases the procedures to fix your present problem have high risk of creating bigger problems, if not right away then down the line. You need to look for research that has been done, and if there is hardly any then don't assume it's fine.

As someone living with chronic pain from unethical surgeries that were done to me as a kid, this topic makes me very upset. In a society where we track every stupid little thing people do when shopping, we don't track anything when it comes to outcomes in medicine, be it drugs or surgeries, and it is very sad because we could so easily have that data and make it accessible to people who are currently making decisions completely in the dark. We really live in a dark age of medicine, relying on data from tiny sample sizes of biased studies to try to navigate our health problems. It should just be a simple maths problem, does getting something done outweigh the risk of not getting something done, the end. So often you get scared into getting procedures done which turn out not to have a good history, and then your problems get accelerated and you lose lots of money trying to figure out what to do. It's very tempting not to look anything up about what you're being recommended, because of the very real problem of reducing your chances of success by making yourself stressed about the risks, but you just can't rely on people working in private industries to take care of you. They are monetarily incentivized to keep you visiting them and getting every procedure as soon as possibly, because heaven forbid you have time to make a decision or you end up getting it somewhere else because you move. Fuck I hate the reputation doctors enjoy from movies and media, there are so many crooked ones who leverage it.

Best of luck and tread carefully. If you have to get something done, you have to get something done, but I urge you to look it up, to ask around to other people who may have gotten it done, ask your parents if any of their friends have had stuff done... etc. And don't assume all tests are safe, some of them have their own risks. You only want so much radiation, for example.

I agree with what you say Chef, sorry to hear about the unethical surgeries done to you and the pain they've caused. Weird I was just reading an article in Wired magazine yesterday following people who got hand transplant surgeries. Was publicly touted as a big success but what we didn't hear about is that the patients have to take drugs for the rest of their life that are prone to destroy their kidneys. I've felt wary of doctors ever since getting really messed up by psychiatrists as a teenager. But like you say, they have such a high reputation, and if you're cautious or skeptical about diagnoses sometimes people will jump on you as being some kind of anti-vax, anti-science moon bat. I mean I'm grateful we have doctors and will defer to their expertise most of the time but still it pays to be careful when someone potentially wields so much power over your body.
