I had a similar experience with Black, I rooted for N all game long. He was a bit extreme, but I could really understand where he was coming from. The less than subtly hinted "I'm the real bad guy and it was all a front" helped only a little bit.
Also yeah the systems add to multiplayer and stuff like duel tower/subway.
@Cricketer12: I don't agree to 5th gen being worse than 3rd. 2nd is pretty legendary though. Gen 3 was definitely the best in terms of gameplay for me. Admittedly the rival wasn't that great. But that can be said of any game post gen 2. Otherwise, I really enjoyed gen 3.

Hey! I had the exact same experience. You used the DraStic DS emulator, right? That thing is amazing. I also grabbed Pokemon Black to play on my phone and actually ran through the entire game and postgame on my humble Nexus 5 at a glorious 60 FPS. I thought it was a "fine" game in terms of gameplay (Pokemon is Pokemon and like you, I only ever played through Pokemon Red as a teen). In terms of story, though, it's funny: I never played through Pokemon Red asking myself philosophical questions about indentured servitude and what roles Pokemon played in the world until Pokemon Black, and only because the game pushes you into thinking about these things. Once you start down that path of "is keeping Pokemon ethical?" the entire premise of the game world falls apart. From that point on, instead of the game being fun because it's a game, it constantly hounds you about ethics and symbiotic relationships until you just want to cruise through battles and get it over with.
I also grabbed Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 but I couldn't get into it and stopped after a few hours. I'm looking for another high quality original DS game to play on my phone (and I'm sure iaguz is too), if anyone has recommendations.

The World Ends With You is an awesome game with unique mechanics. There's a port for mobile already and it should play pretty well on a phone.

Is it turn based?
My interest is piqued, but I'm not sure I'm interested in something that might be even slightly a pain in the ass to play on an iPad

Radiant Historia is the best game on the Nintendo DS.

Gen3 was small, most pokemon were pretty uninteresting, the antagonists were more random than team rocket and I the only new good thing they introduced were abilities. Also surfing on your pokemon is fun for 30 minutes, not for 3 hours.
They did a good job on the world design though, the edition has lots of pretty places. Outside of the actual gameplay I also liked their representation of the sea with diver and music etc.
But overall I enjoyed leafgreen far more than sapphire f.e.. And leafgreen could have been a lot better if they didn't seal the seven islands with event-codes (screw Big N).

Then again my DS touchscreen seems way more precise than my smartphone touchscreen. Also the controls are a bit fidgety in TWEWYY to begin with, mainly thanks to the 2d-3d hybrid view. Really good game though.

The Phoenix Wright series is awesome. Ace attorney is the first part. Castlevanias Dawn of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia are great! Picture of ruin is pretty decent. I have no idea how they play on a smartphone though, real time and lots of buttons. Yugi Oh is a nice way to pass boredom. Same for Advance wars dual strike.
I Know some people who really loved Professor Layton.

I thought Gen 3 had some of the best Pokemon additions.
Gen 2 was particularly underwhelming with Tyranitar being one of the coolest additions, and then you never see it in the actual game.. There's a Dark type Elite 4 ffs, give her a Tyranitar instead of Vileplume/Gengar.
Gen 3 was a massive improvement. Metagross, Salamence, Aggron was my usual post-game team in the battle tower or w/e it was called. Other favs included Flygon, Walrein, and Gardevoir. I'm a sucker for Stage 2 Pokemon, Gen 3 was amazing in that regard.
It also offered seriously improved graphics, double battles, battle tower, etc.

Honestly I was hugely disappointed with the new Gen 3 remakes because they didnt have a full-fledged BATTLE FRONTIER!
Easily my favorite part of pretty much any Pokemon game.
