What the title says, but worst of all I got addicted to ranked MM and thats all I play for a couple of months now. I'm a fairly casual support only player - a while back I decided to try and reach 4k MMR for the street cred. I've been hovering around 3800-3900 since, but the games have been nothing short of nerve wrecking, infuriating and simply not one bit fun. I swear, the moment I hit 4k I wont touch ranked MMR ever again but I simply cant make it to 4000! A couple of days ago I went between 3950-3975 without being able to win 2 games in a row. This continued for the better part of last week. The situation has made me bitter and resentful towards my team mates and I get upset the moment I see a terrible pick, like say pudge solo offlane. I dont know what to do now, I really want to be back to the easy and relaxed normal MM, but not achieving my goal being 50-100 MMR away from it will make me feel even worse. So atm I'm in this perpetual anger where I pray to god simply to have a good game, its not even about winning. Just enjoyable, close and fun games. But those simply dont happen. I cant believe what Dota has become for me, but yea. I just wanted vent my frustration somewhere and I apologize if that blog isn't terribly informative and wasted your time. Think of this blog as something I just recently encountered in my ranked games - jungling morph. Silly and dumb.

i've seen jungling morph in some high mmr games. needless to say, it doesn't work there either. only way it will ever work is if it's str morph i think.

sorry to hear about the frustration. sounds like when i try to get sleep these days, teetering, extremely tired, but something is always itching and stopping me from finally going unconscious.
i notice that it's a lot of problems. not the right timing, anxiousness, etc.

hence, it's hard for me to recommend you just clean your slate of mind and win some normal MM games comfortably before going back to finished those ranked games.

instead, i'd just say do some studying and learn something new with your heroes. do the best that you can and over-achieve for yourself. that's really the only thing you can measure and enjoy at the end of the games.

the moment that players are completely satisfied with their play and decide not to change it-normal mm or not-is when you know that things are slipping and it's possibly getting stale.

I'm in kinda a similar situation. I've been all over the 4k bracket ever since mmr came out without ever being particularly bothered or invested in my mmr. Sure it'd be great if it was higher, but it's not because i'm not better than I am. Similar to your experiences in Unranked, I could just play and not care. Sure winning was more fun than losing most of the time, but it wasn't a big deal. Team picks jungle invoker? meh, there's always next game. Statistically speaking, that jungle invoker is more likely to be against you than with you anyway.

Sometimes not caring took actual effort, but I always had it in me to just play some dotes and let what happened happen.

Anyway after a long string of mostly just party queue, I started to put in more solo-q games and my rating jumped to a peak of 49xx. The 5K dream was real (much like you, I'm aware there's no difference but there's simply a lot of credibility associated with being able to describe myself as legitimately 5K, especially when all my friends outrank me). Suddenly, i've not only started to enjoy the games less, but I'm pretty sure i'm also not as likely to win (unclear if i'm playing worse or just less conducive to a team atmosphere). After making negative ground for a while, i'm sitting in the 4800's trying to figure out what my strat should be to push 5K without ruining my own games.

E: I'd like to point out that of course the easy fix to my problem would be to just try really hard to improve, but I've long ago come to terms with the fact that i'm not going to put in a half-effort to improve and that I'm certainly not going to try to seriously improve because i'd rather just play for fun so... oh well.

The thing is hitting an MMR means nothing and you can claim "I'm 5k" or "I'm 3k" but if you only get there from lucking in a few wins it doesn't really mean anything. Getting mad at your teammates just means that you need luck to get into the 4k Bracket.

Just accept that your MMR is right for the rating you should be on and focus inwards at improving. Even if it's frustrating to be at 3950 MMR that's where you belong right now.

Ranked match making is rigged by valve so thats why players like morph jungle and pudge offlane are in high mmr or mixed with tryharders serious players.
So much tryhard you play so more retarded players valve will rigged you with for balance 50-50.

Also to elaborate on the being upset with picks part. Its because I get really annoyed with people picking whatever they feel like while completely disregarding their team mates and their picks. Its a similar problem to having someone insta pick a jungling hero - it's not a problem per se and you could come across players that have a lot of impact with jungling heroes, but picks like pudge solo off or morph jungle force me to not pick something I would have fun with cause solo omni support is just shit. So in my desire to win despite those picks I force myself to pick like lich or dazzle so that at least we don't lose all 3 lanes by default. I get pissed cause there are people who pick whatever the fuck they want even if its fucking awful in that instance and their team mates (Im sure Im not alone) have to deal with the situation they are put in. Its not even about playing garbage with a terrible pick although that makes the situation worse for sure.

I wonder if MMR would be better if they only told you your total once a week and hid it the rest of the time. There are whole game industries created around filling meters and watching numbers go up, so the psychological effect is very real.

Clearly this would be an option feature, but I bet people would use it.

This is very understandably frustrating, but it's also something that can be solved by reversing your mentality. It's less likely (particularly if you're picking support) that these retards are on your team than on the enemy team. That means you have a greater opportunity to take advantage of their selfishness and stupidity than the enemy does for your team. So it's just a question of what you can best pick to exploit the enemy's weakness faster than they can exploit your teams. Thus if you lose, it's because you aren't abusing their stupidity fast enough to make the game easy for your morons.

I like playing defensive supports but I want to just abandon most games I play defensive supports for <6k core players. It's just not worth it. More aggressive supports that make things happen on your own make the game 10x easier.

i have a slight issue with just accepting 'there's next game'. it doesn't necessarily mean i agree with getting angry with teammates for their poor choices, it's a matter of being unable to gain your time back. like ver. says, sometimes it doesn't feel worth it. with 30+ minutes at a time, i'd rather look up vods or load up a replay i've been eyeing to figure something out.

of course, you will never know which situation you're in until the game is started and underway, so all you can really do is make the most out of those 30+ minutes. at that point who cares who your personal pick is, winning is the fun part.

I took a 2 year break from Dota for the same reasons as you disciple. At that time I had 4.5k mmr. About 3 months ago I picked up Dota again with a fresh look on things. I always last picked the first 3-4 days, I always had to play a support (no surprise there), but I didnt mind because the break took a toll on my skill, I was slow as hell, didnt know all the changes to the game etc. Im not suggesting to take such a long break, but a small break of a few days or a week wouldnt hurt.

It wasnt working out, so I decided to change it up. As soon as the game starts, I mark down safe lane with Antimage. I dont intend to play AM, I just mark down the safe line with him. In my experience people are a bit more cautious with their picks when they have AM on their team and they generally tend to make strong early/mid game picks. So I just wait to see what their core will be and counter pick it. In case some one randoms a core or is simply an idiot and picks a safe lane core regardless, I take mid, if thats taken, I go offlane. I never played support or jungle. In 3 months I made it to 5.4k mmr by playing 2-3 games a day. I ended up playing 7 heroes in total: Sven, Naix, Antimage, QoP, Alchemist, Void and Beastmaster. All of these heroes are strong at pretty much all stages of the game, farm fast (except Void, but he doesnt need too much farm to be useful), require minimal support and you can dictate tempo with them. Those are my strengths as a player and these heroes allow me to play to my strengths. I always buy my own wards/sentries if I cant get them from the support and never bitch about not receiving help. I rarely talk/chat, but if I do, I make sure I remain either neutral or positive, I never ever bitch about anything to my teammates.

Difference between 4k and 5k isnt that big, people in the 5k are slightly stronger mechanically, but they still make stupid mistakes (I make them too ofc). The biggest mistake they make is: they focus too much on the negative aspect of their team, be it picks or misplays without realizing that the opponents arent any better. Its very hard to evaluate the game when you have a negative mindset, thats why people are so freaking butthurt in Dota and get pissed off so easily. What pisses you off is the same what pisses them off, so use that to your advantage, be the guy that will piss off the other team. My goal was to get to higher mmr and I wasn't gonna let some idiot on my team get in the way of that. I guess you need mental fortitude to endure all the shit on your way up. And thats not something that goes away, there isnt a mmr heaven waiting for you in the higher brackets.

So the experience has thought me this: a) you need to have a handful of heroes that you are very good at and allow you to play to your strengths, b) mental capacity to endure.
Smile, tomorrow will be worse

you might just need to tighten up a few basics

http://www.dotabuff.com/players/131465760/trends?date=3month&metric=last_hits

also stop picking nightstalker until you learn to play him better (49% winrate with a 2.78kda over 57 games and you're picking him on tilt whilst trying to get your MMR from 3900 to 4000? dont do it bra. tho you had a great kda this month it doesn't necessary translate to winrate by any means)

spam another 30 games on your supports whilst tightening up your cs, xp and kda and you should be going up again, right? make all of them dazzle/omni/lich games and you just gave yourself a chance at another +5% winrate

also you shud def quit at 4k and pick up a musical instrument instead imo lol

Its very normal to be frustrated by mm, i ll explain the situation with rigged theory which is the most correct and amusing.
From my experience kills matter even in ranked, if you got bad kda (well thats expected as a support when you lose a game) you trigger the ''dont deserve'' rigged mechanism and valve puts you in the must lose group and in the next games you are getting retarded teammates. The opposite happens when you are usually best in team.Valve always punish supports mercilessly.

I understand 100% dude, I was 4300, I'm down to 3911, I went like 1-24. I get support leshracs that get no points stun, Invokers with 443 games that still suck worse then my 2k friend, feeders, tilters, randomers that flame you for not playing the hero they randomed, I've seen it all. Sometimes, you just have to step away from ranked for a while, or just laugh, tell your friend, "You won't believe the shit I just saw," share a good laugh and try again.

100% you have to keep your own attitude positive, if you aren't feeling good searching for a game, step away, breath and do something else for a while. A positive attitude for you is the most important thing you can do.

Playing dota as procrastination when you are supposed to do something "important" will never lead to good things. I have had so much more fun playing dota once or twice a week after work then I had when I played 10 games day. Take a step back get on your feet and then maybe think about playing some again. 5k MMR < 4k $

Dont worry. It gets worse in the 4-4,5k rating. People get decently good at the game and that causes them to go way overshoot and think that they are the shit and ignore any advice and always think that they are the absolute definition of skill. Lower ratings arn't as tryhard and bitter. Higher ratings are friendlier and they know their limits.
You set your goal to the most cancerous bracket.

after 11 years of dota I've stopped caring since two years. my all time high was 5500 when #1 was 6300 iirc. now I'm at 4800 and don't really give a fuck anymore and exclusively play unranked with friends (because most of them are 2k anyways). It is just a number and this number doesn't change a single bit after 4k. the only thing that really difffers is the efficency (a few more lasthits here and there).

You will have: feeders, toxic players, people fighting for lanes, junglers, afk junglers, no lane supports (aka roamers because playing a real support sucks), people getting triggered

please for the love of icefrog NEVER THINK A NUMBER WILL CHANGE THAT FACT.

on the other hand my friend asked me if I could play 30 more int. ranked games so he can overtake his new mmr (solo 1900 - int solo 2600) I did and what I've seen isn't dota.
You could call everything below 3k (and I don't know when it ends) a different game like DotA 10v10. These people play a completely different game. I actually feel really sad about it. Experiencing it is something completely different. Especially for 30 games.
