Let's Talk 2v2 - Meta?

To everyone reading this, I am no expert in SC2 but I've played A LOT of 2v2 over the period of the SC2 series but I haven't managed to figure out whether there is a meta game. I'm posting this blog to try and figure out if there is one currently so I can create a style which would dominate the 2v2 scene.

Currently, depending on the match up, everything that anyone does seems to be random; no matter on the caliber of their 1v1 rank or skill. If there is an all in coming it isn't the same as it would be in 1v1, (ignoring the fact that their is 4 people playing rather than 2), if there is cheese play it could easily be a macro build behind it. Everything that everyone does isn't making sense and there doesn't appear to be any builds being talked about for team games within SC2.

Everything that anyone talks about for SC2 is for the 1v1 pro scene or trying to rank up ladder points rather than just to have fun with their friends on a team game.

Does anyone have any play styles that are really effective in 2v2, or a composition of units (for any race) that seems to be the most popular or is out right killing people.

I'd love to hear back from anyone, I've been masters 2v2 a couple of times so my understanding isn't awful of the game but it certainly isn't what I want it to be.

Thanks, Dazed.

Pure air trolltoss. Works quite well as long as your ally is terran and you thumb down the big open ramp maps.

Not sure if these are 'meta' but they're quite effective, my friend and I were 2v2 masters up till last season then we both stopped playing as life got busy. I know 2v2 masters isnt the same as 1v1 masters but yah.

(T - Terran, Z - Zerg, P - Protoss, X - Any)

TZ team vs XZ - 2 rax wall off the zerg base if its a split base map, Z goes 10 pool speed and terran pumps marines, both attack other player, zerg can't get out

TT vs XX - 2 rax (reactored so 4x) reaper from both players (some of the 2v2 maps are super abusive in terms of where reapers can come in), as long as you are on skype and have good teamwork, this build alone brought us to masters, after that people get good at not dying to it so it is on you to do damage or you fall behind in tech heavily,

TZ - vs XX - the good old helliion/speedling combination is quite effective at getting map control and punishing mistakes by opponents.. I think this combination works best in 3v3 (2 Z, 1 T) but still good in 2v2 as well.

On race combinations: I think its mostly accepted that TZ combinations are the most effective/versatile. PP and ZZ is usually quite bad for 2v2. I'm not aware of any meta or builds around the other race combinations. PZ (up till masters) you can do funny things like speedling harass (and draw their attention towards the front) while the protoss player proxies a super fast stargate for a quick oracle.

Ling hellion or ling reaper rush is probably the best way to go if you want to have an 80% winrate in master league.. however its gay and cheesy as fuck and even though its frowned upon people still do it... this game was sadly balanced around 1v1 and they couldnt be fucked to make seperate balance for 2v2... so go ahead, abuse that fact, and get yourself some nice juicy wins

This is a very interesting question, as apart from very seldom 2vs2 tourneys, noone ever uploads replays of his 2vs2-games. I downloaded very godo ones, but those were from 2 years ago, so not applicable anymore.
Maybe there should be talks on high level 2vs2 players which makes them upload their replays more often?

Its literally just all cheesey rushes dude They're all just too effective for anything else to be decent at a high level of play.

2v2 Masters Na, Diamond on Kr.

2v2 has become SO much better with hots, not only are the maps strategically diverse, but the MSC has really saved protoss early game from being so cheese-centric. Obviously, as in 1v1, 2v2 meta is highly dependent upon league. 6 pools are much more prevalent in low leagues, while higher mechanical 'First Order Optimal Strategies' are used in higher leagues. Yes, I adopted the FOOS term from the video addressing the derogatory view on cheese. In 2v2, cheese is not to be interpreted in the same context as you would in a 1v1.

2v2 is highly scouting centered, because of the necessity to identify tech from 2 players, possibly even races. 'Cheese' is a great way to find out an opponent's opening, while at the same time keeping pressure on the opponent.
Eg: in my 2v2s, I open double reaper to keep the opponent in his base, while my protoss teammate opens fast oracle. The double scout lets us see practically everything coming at us, and allows the opportunity of economic damage.

A combination of warpgate nerfs, MSC, queen buffs, map pool, and the reaper for terran to provide optimal scouting has pushed the meta I experience away from the all-in cheese builds towards more aggro openings that have midgame transitions. In base expos do tend to help for the normal reaper expand.

In essence I would say the meta-game dictates constant pressure to keep optimal scouting and always know what your opponent has. Either to prepare for blink stalker allins, the 'firepunch build' (pool all your $$$ to your protoss teammate for an 8 minute push), or just to inflict damage of your own, constant harassment alternated between players allows for incredibly fun 2v2s :D
Don't underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can't hear, and not bothering.

I've watched Taeja play 2v2 for a couple hours. He had random partners. All of his builds were map specific (whatever compliments the map best) and also fast expanded a couple times which surprised me, as FE seems to be an auto-loss on 2v2.

There is no meta. You just need to look for hardcore all ins, or gimmick builds on small/large maps.

There is definite 2v2 meta between the top 2v2 players. Fast expanding is the norm in 2v2 because once you are experienced enough to recognize the cheeses you can hold them off with proper scouting and reacting, just as in 1v1s. At normal 2v2 levels though it's likely a lot more random

Joshies post above seems quite accurate for listing some of the popular builds in the meta today
