I know TL is probably not the best place to bring your family troubles but I really needed somewhere to rant and this is probably the only place I know.

I'm a second semester senior. By an overwhelming majority, this means that you can relax, not really care much about school as long as you are passing all your classes and staying out of trouble to graduate and go to college. my parents? nah, they still force me to study every damn day and force me to get Bs or else they take away "privileges" (unlimited texting... which does not impact my studying at all...)

Today my dad goes to my online gradebook and sees that I have a 72% in english honors right now with only 1 essay grade in, in which teacher was overall very disappointed in the ENTIRE CLASS. ofc, i already knew what they were going to tell me. the usual, "why are you playing games with this shit grade, you'll never graduate, how will you feel with a C on your transcript going into college?" hey guess what? ITS ONE FUCKING ESSAY GRADE GET OVER IT. oh, and my past marking period grades? 84, 90, 87 respectively. I am nowhere even near, hell, a C average for the year in english. so how about you get off my fucking back and take a seat. plus I have many english projects this quarter that will fluff up the grade substantially.

oh, and wait, after I tell them that I had already submitted many other english assignments for grading (one socratic seminar participation grade which I felt very confident about, and my senior speech outline which is honestly a fluff grade), and that colleges dont really care about your senior year so long as you didnt miserably fail any classes, AND that your high school transcript basically vanishes once you get into college, they say all this shit about how im making excuses. im sorry, im just telling you common sense information that pretty much everyone agrees on.

Sorry for the vent. If you've read it this far, I'm impressed that you managed to read through a high schooler's poorly thought out rant. I have one more favor to ask you. What would you tell your parents if they were acting like this and do senior year grades actually matter? I figured if my own parents cant believe me, then i'll need outside proof to back up my statements.

Thanks for reading.

My parents didn't care what I did. I didn't even go to college they just asked that I didn't end up in a gutter somewhere. I have a good job that pays well enough and am so glad I did not put myself through another 4/5 years of study... I think the exams are what really matter? I'm not sure, I have been out of high school for 5 years (holy shit!) and it has changed a lot since then.

Hehehe, your parents would of hated me I graduated in the bottom 15 people of my high school because I was skipping so many days of school. The important thing is, I graduated though. Did just enough to scoot by.

The music video of Numb does this blog justice...

As for the actual blog, I have Korean parents myself, and with me growing up here in the States, they obviously cared a lot about my grades and actually expected bad middle school grades to prevent me going to high school, which is the case in Korea, but obviously not here.

When I got to high school, they were, like you, always on my ass and lordy, my mom would never stop bitching at me about grades and this and that. After bitching about my grades, she would always find a way to relate something that she hates about me, like me exercising in the house or listening to too much music, or anything she found annoyed of me doing on that particular day.

Honestly, your best bet was to either deal with it, or just prove them wrong and get A's for every single class, ace all your IB/AP exams, and take part in extra curricular stuff for your junior year, which is sort of what I did, except for AP Physics, because fuck physics. High school is fairly easy in terms of tests/quizzes and the work they give you, it's just whether you decide to complete them or not.

Some advice that worked out with my parents, whom I believe are reasonable to an extent, but similar in the amount they bitch at you: make sure you remind them that not everyone actually gets accepted into college. It's not a right to go to college, it's an opportunity. Granted, nowadays, college is pretty iffy as to how much it'll lead up into the job market, but make sure you remind them. Also tell them that with high school, even though it isn't about the grades, it's about how you study and your habits and maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout all of this. I know two friends, one who graduated 12 and another who graduated like, 30 something, both major in computer science, but while 12 is slacking off because he thought college would a breeze like high school, the other is going to San Diego this summer for a paid internship with Google for 3 months. They both attend UT Austin AND pretty much go to the same classes.

Seeing as it's May, hope you study well for AP exams or whatever finals you're about to take soon, and have fun graduating with prom (if it hasn't happened for you yet).

IMO, senior/high school grades matter far less than some would lead you to believe. Case in point: my brother had some of the absolute shittiest high school grades imaginable. Just terrible grades. Comes back from his mormon mission and goes to community college for 2 or 3 semesters and does quite well. Ends up going to BYU and graduates Summa Cum Laude. He is now a tenured law professor at Ohio State University.

My point is that you can do shitty in high school, but well in something like a community college setting and still do really, really well in life.

(Edit: you still have to do well at some point in your academic career, it just doesn't have to be high school)

Cause honestly high school isn't shit. A lot of teenagers don't know what they really want in life until they become fully fledged adults. I know I had my head up my ass all the way up until my early 20s. Then I realized that I needed to change my life and be responsible

OP don't let your parents stress you out. Just relax and take life one day at a time. Life is too short.

I just wanna take a moment to say that this post is magical.

Also, be glad you get to take this time off as relaxation, for me, this was the most stressful time of my life last year. It was awful, and my parents were telling me to lighten up .

Yeah I feel for you man, I'm pretty sure you gave me some advice in my blogs actually about the same kind of stuff. My situation seems extraordinarily similar to yours except I was just getting a B- in Bio. You're almost done though, if you got into the college that you want, great for you, your parents should be happy for you when you graduate. Just ride this storm out, you're at the final hurdle and you'll be away from your parents at college.

Graduation is going to be great for you, but some advice is know when to throw your damn graduation hat, don't jump the gun and embarrass yourself

Blog is too short and you didn't capitalize the fourth paragraph. B+. A- at best.

Didn't capitalize 'I'll' at the end of the fifth paragraph either. A- is reaching a bit, I think.

Honestly, I would say prove them wrong. Do the extra work, raise up whatever grade they have a problem with and show them that you are capable of getting those grades all while doing other stuff on the side (gaming, extracurricular activities etc...). Arguing with your parents won't change anything. The only thing that'll happen is that there would be tension between you guys which would make living harder to do.

It's much easier to make peace with it than fight it. Your dad said that its 72%? You're right dad, I will work harder on the next assignment and then just do better on the next one and show it to them. Still not satisfied? I'll continue trying harder. I think most parents are satisfied if they see their son working hard so that even with the end result, they know you are trying your best. I'm sure that applies to asian parents as well. Working hard now will also help you out when you get to college. You don't need to give up gaming or anything like that either. Just work hard and game on the side.

As for them mattering or not, I dunno how it works like in the US. Up here, grade 12 marks(guessing those are the equivalent to yours) can determine if you get any entrance scholarships and their amount etc... so they do have some bearing. Some of the harder programs actually require 85% or more while most are around 70% or so, so the higher average that you have, the better chance you'll get into your program. Again, this is the general Canadian system, dunno how it compares to US but regardless, better marks can't hurt

Also, for being completely subjective, I'll give you your first C in english!

wtf ur parents settle for Bs? That's pretty lenient for Asian parents. Anything less than A was unacceptable for me.

Step up your Asian game....

Just curious, which college are you attending in the fall?
