So a few days ago, I got this friend request from a girl whom I didn't have any mutual friends with, and whom I never knew about. So obviously, being a guy, I looked at her pictures, decided she was cute, and accepted the friend request. But all jokes aside, i did message her asking who she was.
I completely forgot about this until like an hour ago. She messaged me saying that i had a cute avatar and asked if we could be friends. Then she asked if i had a girlfriend. I pretty much knew right then and there that something fishy was up. I checked her profile page, and she created an account in 2011, but she barely had any posts and only like three people had posted on her wall. There were a few more game/app posts, but that was about it. Also, i couldn't see how many friends she had since it was blocked(?) i guess. She also only has like 3 pictures in her album. I mean, is this a fake account? Does she not have very many friends?
I haven't really had strangers friend request me before, and by strangers, i mean, like not even a friend of your old high school teacher or something. Is this normal in facebook to have random strangers friend request you? I've used it since like 2009 but haven't had this happen to me.
Anways, I tried to stop the conversation by answering curtly but she kept asking questions and asked again whether i had a girlfriend. I told her that she looked pretty, but that I didn't feel comfortable talking about this kind of stuff with a stranger. She said some other stuff and then said good night and called me"pretty" boy.
Not sure what to make of this. I'm kind of scared that someone is stalking me now and will kill me in my sleep(only half joking). It's crazy but im a pretty paranoid guy. and how did she get my facebook page without mutual friends? Maybe I should just take it as an ego boost, but still... something feels kind of weird. Maybe its because of the catfishing stories nowadays with manti te'o and chris anderson.

I just thought all those weird invites were from adverts. Once you friend someone they get info about you and potentially more info about your friends.
|
Treat it casually, don't think to much in to it. Its like pretending you just met someone new with no attachment. This should help you figure out things in the long run. I mean this is your conversation you kinda have to be the one deciding what to do. What matters outside should not affect what you do with whats happening right now.

Obvious catfish is obvious.

dude, friending total strangers on fb is asking for trouble...

I've had a load of requests like this recently, really strange o.O

I would unfriend them immediately. It sounds creepy. It is also possibly fake. The fact that she is hiding so much is also something to be suspicious about. But then again I don't tend to accept friend requests on facebook from people I don't know at all. I have a few TL friends, otherwise everyone on there are people I know irl.

probably people employed by dating sites.
They try to catch lonely people and lure them to certain sites where they then pretend to arrenge a date while the monthly sub cost is 50-100€. Its pretty common.
And as we can see here, rather successfull as you as a internet savy person allready spend hours thinking about it/her.

What to invest time caring about. Random chick on facebook messaging you or cute Korean girl working at the store you go to every day. Your choice, but one is 100% real.
|
u dont have to be worried about anything. but dont waste another moment on this cuz it's most likely a desperate loser with fake pics, etc.

This is exactly what it is. I always get friend requests or skype requests from Olga Kurlienev or Sasha Volmonov from the Ukraine, etc, etc. It's a big scam to prey upon single people, don't fall for it.
In reality its 'Fat Uri' sitting in his basement somewhere in Moscow in his underwear making accounts using fake pics and a little imagination.

dont listen to the haters, she wants to the dick

If the girl was from ukraine or russia or something, it'd be much more apparent. But this girl "apparently" lives in hong kong which is where i happen to live right now also.

Ok dude, the people here are right, its just a scam trying to catch lonely desperate people. Clearly this one has used the right bait. Hong kong really isnt that strange of a country for these things to be coming out of either, plus you can type random first names into facebook and get hundreds of peoples accounts up from areas nearby your own account, which is probably where yours came from. People being paid to make accounts will do so in various regions to broaden their potential.
Delete it, its a "scam".
|
Do a reverse image search on her pictures. Depending if / where they show up, you can draw you own conclusions.
Apart from that: chat away. Dont share anything too personal (address, phone, ...). Dont get emotionally attached. But you actually can talk to random strangers on the internet. Dont visit any links they send

Delete it, its a "scam". I wasn't stating that this person was from hong kong in order to make the girl "believable." I was just saying that this wasn't your normal "hot tall blonde from ukraine" which we've all seen in porn ads haha.

surprised at the people telling you to continue chatting.
if not a scam then it's definitely a weirdo - pics are almost certain to be fake. think about it this way: if she were actually that cute would she be creeping Facebook for dudes in her area? and sounds like you don't even have your own picture as your profile picture - what would her motivation be to add you as a hot, single chick?
I've never accepted a friend request before from a stranger.
|
i've got a couple lately, too. friended the first one because i thought she might be a girl i met and didn't remember, realised it was a fake account and blocked the next couple i got.
|
I dk man, it sounds like a scam especially since she keeps asking if you have a girlfriend. Try to actually talk with her, and ask her questions that require more than a yes or no.
I don't want to give you false hope, but I've seen a lot of scams before with chat bots, and this one sounds fishy, but it's missing some crucial elements for it to be that. That being said, maybe this is the new way the bots work.

I've never accepted a friend request before from a stranger. Actually it is a photo of me, but her english wasn't that good so she just called it an avatar. But yeah, you do raise up good points. I'm NOT going to meet her or initiate conversation, but if someone is catfishing me right now, i'm telling you, I've at least got to applaud their efforts.

That being said, maybe this is the new way the bots work. This girl actually originally messaged me in chinese, and i told her i didn't speak chinese, and then she started using english. English wasn't very good, but still..

This sounds like one of your friends making a fake account and then trolling you.

Reverse seach with the images to see if you find something. Then reverse joke

Don't be fool its a scam next thing they'll do is ask for dickpics and use those to extort you for money before releasing them.

DONT DO IT CATFISH ALERT

Also note if you're messaging from your phone and don't have location services disabled (on by default) they can see where you are when you send the message.
|
Oh, random internet girls... Those, who on a first date steal your wallet and ask you to call them "Larry"...
|
I don't see any problems with talking to her, maybe provide deliberately misleading information so they'll get confused, frustrated, or upset and leave you alone.
|
Yea... If I were you, I would delete her from my friend's list and possibly block her as well. Really seems fishy. And even if she is real and not a scammer/bot, would you really want to get to know a girl who looks up random people on FB to try to "be friends" or whatever? That screams out "desperate crazy girl" to me.
|
I just imagine you as a rat looking at a rat-trap with cheese on it going "Whoa, free cheese! This is awesome!"
|
and all your friend rats telling you its a trap and you go
"i dont know man, it looks like free cheese! Ill just take one bite, what can happen?"
|
Wow I'm old. When did "catfish" become slang for that kinda thing?

"i dont know man, it looks like free cheese! Ill just take one bite, what can happen?" also this was basically the perfect analogy
think about it this way -- what is the upside of staying friends with her on FB? slim to none. downside to her having access to all your personal info and social network? huge.

I kept getting random friend requests from Japanese girls on facebook a few months ago, and after looking at the location all of their photos were shown to be taken at all the different accounts pointed to the same building about 10 blocks away from my apartment. Definitely someone trying to steal some kind of information from me.
