TeamLiquid's 100 Greatest PC Games of ALL TIME
Based on the controversy generated by PC gamers awful (really terrible) top 100 list recently, it was suggested that the well-educated, 150 IQ, but modest PC gaming master race might have some good ideas about what would constitute a good top 100 list. And I thought, that sounds like a find idea, somebody should get on that. So I did! This thread is to vote upon your person top 10 PC games of ALL TIME. You are beholden to no set of rules or restrictions, but only your judgement. Influential, funnest to play now, hidden gems. Do your best! Or worst, it's your dime.
Rules are as follows: 1. I will tabulate results by hand when voting closes one week from today at midnight US Pacific time, Friday August 2nd. (if anybody wants to help, pm me, help is more than welcome) 2. One vote per user 3. To ensure no multiple voting, accounts must be created prior to July of 2013. 4. List your top 10 in order. Your #1 is worth 10 points overall, your #10 is worth 1 point, and all the inbetweens. 5. One game per line in your post, numbered. Descriptions and explanations of your choices are appreciated but not required. 6. Feel free to to discuss, critize, argue, promote your own views, etc. Please just make it clear when your post is a vote. 7. Votes are for a single game, not a series of games. Expansions and episodes (looking at you HL2) can be considered a single game. 8. Do not edit your vote. I will be tallying votes throughout the voting period, so when your vote is put into this thread, it is final!
As an example I will begin with my own vote: 1. Starcraft: Brood War The game that launched national sport in Korea. A game with perfect balance, graphics that disprove the notion that newer is better, and personality dripping from every unit. A masterpiece, clearly. 2. Portal A proof that short and sweet can make a game great. Certainly the play time isn't much, but per time of playing, i've never had as much fun with a game as Portal 3. Bioshock Infinite Perhaps playing it recently has colored my viewpoint, but Bioshock Infinite is the most fun I've had with my PC in ages. I'd tried playing through many various single player games, to no avail, deciding that perhaps the problem was that I just didn't care for single player any more! This game I took a chance on, and it lulled me out of that thought, it engaged me through and through with it's beautiful locale and wonderful gameplay based around that locale (yay skylines). I frankly prefered the pace(faster) and locale (and watching that locale get torn to pieces before your eyes) to the original in retrospect. 4. Civilization II The thousands of hours of my life I'll never get back. I liked the original, but this improved upon it in every way. I felt like Civ 3 and beyond somewhere along the lines lost track of the elements that really counted (although alpha centauri was also great). I've probably wasted 100 hours of my life on the World War II scenario alone. 5. League of Legends League of legends has transitioned into what Brood War used to be. It eats my time, keeps me company. The champions are well polished and put together, the feedback is viscereal and on point. Dota fans gonna hate, but I like it more. 6. Dota Credit is however due to the original. All-stars consumed by days back in the day, while making me feel like a bad person because I'd rather play DotA than ladder Warcraft 3. It's a true testament when a mod (really, no more than a map) for a game comes to overshine the game that spawned it and create a whole new genre. 7. SimCity 2000 The high point of simulation games in my mind. SimCity made the leap into 3 dimensions with panache, nifty new elements, and a great sense of style. I never quite got tired of watching aliens blow up Los Angeles or New York, then reloading and doing it all over again. A great example of what a sandbox can be. 8. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic My favorite RPG I've ever played. Yes I've played Baulder's Gate. I just love Star Wars, and this game is definitely the best video game adaption, which rather than attempting to tie itself down to the movies is it's own property with it's own vision of the star wars universe, one which is compelling and fun to be in. The combat system is intuitive and addicting and building a light saber is just a fun concept. Too bad the sequel sucked 9. Counter-strike 1.6 Speaking of mods which overshadow the game they are from. Sure everybody has fond memories of half-life, but who spent all kind of time playing half-life versus the hours whiled away in counter-strike. This game proves that dedication to the basics, sounds, weapon control, graphic indications, and concept can make a great game. 10. Grim Fandango What would a best of list be without at least one pretentious left field pick. In seriousness though, Grim Fandango is a game with characters that I doubt I shall forget. Frankly, I found the puzzle aspect of the game tedious and random, so I played through with a guide telling me where to go every step. Even with that flaw, the setting, music, characters and plot were certainly in my top 10 best gaming experiences.
Now get to voting, and may the best games win!

1. Half Life 1 An era defining game, it had depth, challenge, it was way ahead of its time, and it is almost single handedly the reason current shooters function the way they do.
2. The Secret of Monkey Island (Monkey Island 1) An incredible classic, full of brilliant humour and frustrating puzzle solving. This was one of the first games I ever played on PC when I was much younger, and I think it still holds strong to this day.
3. Baldur's Gate 2 Not much really needs to be said about this. Perhaps I'm a touch young, but I think this massively dwarfs Baldur's Gate 1.
4. Saints Row: The Third It's like a company remembered what games are meant to be about in an age of brown shooters. Vice City was always far and away my favourite GTA, things got far too serious after that. For me SR3 is the sequel to Vice City, and 8 billion times better and more fun!
5. Dragon Age: Origins. The most engrossed I've ever got in a single player RPG. I think the combat is a little subpar, but the atmosphere, characters and story are the best I've personally experienced.
6. Portal What needs to be said?
7. Monkey Island 2 Similar to MI:1, a masterpiece on a larger scale.
8. World of Warcraft I know this might get some hate, but WoW took a lot of my life and despite being "generally quit", I've played vanilla through to Mists varying amounts each expansion, with the majority of it being during WotLK. I know it steals and stole a lot of its ideas, but Blizzard knows what sells, and nothing that has been a genre defining game for so many years ought to be left off this list.
9. League of Legends It has almost 30 million unique global players weekly, is fun, has the biggest esports scene (despite not being a great spectator game) and is the one game I always default to when I'm bored.
10. C'Thulu Saves the World A hidden masterpiece IMO, especially playing the Director's Cut version with the hidden notes throughout. I don't think it's actually top 10 material, but is EASILY good enough to fit on a Top 100 list.
|
1. Brood War 2. World of Warcraft 3. Starcraft 2 4. DotA 5. Baldur's Gate 6. Rome: Total War 7. Unreal Tournament 8. Diablo 9. Portal 10. Age of Empires II

edit: nvm, what I thought is exactly what is happening, people put BW first because they are incredibly biased in its favor.

That's the point of the poll. You list your top 10 games. Sorry you didn't understand the OP?

It frustrates me when people replace one biased list with another under the guise of it being somehow better. I understood the OP perfectly. It's not worth it though, this is something for fun, and it's not going to be published like PCgamer's is, so there's no point in me being a debby-downer.

1. Bioshock: the most well-put together game I've ever seen. The gameplay meshes with the game's themes and setting beautifully, it actually makes you think, it has the sickest plot twist, and the ending is even coherent (suck it, Infinite lovers). 2. Starcraft 2: I didn't really play Brood War unfortunately, but SC2 is my favorite RTS. 3. Rome: Total War: sick history nerd chills all day long. 4. KotOR: If they had made this game instead of the prequels I would have been so happy. 5. Portal 6. Red Alert 2 7. Command and Conquer Generals: this game knows how to do lasers pretty well. 8. Skyrim: It's some of the most fun I've had in an open-world setting. 9. Age of Mythology: cyclops' fighting hydras and trolls is a pretty good concept for a game. 10. Portal 2: it's still pretty funny, even if its not as good as the original.

It wouldn't be hard to come up with a better list. The PC Gamer one has Broodwar at #81 while DayZ is #45 and Batman Arkham Asylum is at #65. Having everyone here put their 10 favourite games down is likely to come up with something a little more accurate. Admittedly it'd have a Blizz/RTS bias but it's still going to be better than PC Gamer's.
Some of the other ridiculous shit on their 'greatest of all time' list:
Skyrim at #1 L4D2 #9 Diablo III at #96. Diablo II & I unranked. Dragon Age > Baldurs Gate II Supreme Commander 58 spots ahead of Brood War

Edit: Changed because i derped and added two non-PC games because i played them emulated on my PC.

It can then be made permanently invisible and surrounded by invisible angry mobs and filled with invisible rocket launchers.

1. Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne 2. StarCraft: Brood War 3. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction 4. Civilization IV 5. RollerCoaster Tycoon 6. Civilization III 7. Rainbow Six 8. Portal 9. League of Legends 10. Starcraft II
|
1. Starcraft: Brood War 2. Portal 3. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (the most played game on my Steam list, it is a highly underrated gem) 4. Warcraft 2 5. Bastion 6. King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow (I debated putting the first one on here instead... this series was amazing as a child and tons of hours were spent figuring out Sierra's twisted logic puzzles) 7. Quake 3 (tons of hours playing Deathmatch in this and it had quite the e-sports scene for the longest time) 8. X-COM: UFO Defense (the original X-Com basically) 9. Ultima Online (While not *the* first, it was still the first mainstream graphical MMORPG to take off, and I sunk so many hours into this world as a kid with my 14.4 Kbs modem) 10. The Witcher

Yeeesh, sounds like fun! Hopefully people don't take this thread to seriously. So i tried to consider all genres, making the ranking very hard. Also, i tried to not get carried away by my own fanboyism about specific time-killer of my past.
1. World Of Warcraft: The Burning Cursade While i didn't play WoW for years and i don't know much about the current situation, i'd say the basic game itself was a mileston in gaming history. Just starting with the game, discovering this super huge world was amazing and new as something undiscovered can be. Not going into the different classes, races, quests, zones, dungeons and battlegrounds, but 40 people raids were an event for itself. And thats were The Burning Crusade could shine. Those boss-fights from Lady Vashj over Kaelthas to Illidan were a perfect mixture of a fun, challanging and teamworking experience. 2. Baldur's Gate 2 I wouldn't have guessed to place that game this high, but it's just such a roleplay monster, that kills hours and hours and hours of time. A strong story, endless side-quests, perfect game-mechanics, various living teammembers, simply perfect in its genre. 3. Half Life Oh my, what a breakthough for FPS. This was just a crazy good game at release setting the bar for shooters to follow. Also it allowed for the development of Counter-Strike, which i didn't include in the list as an own game, but would have probably put at the same rank as HL. 4. The Secret Of Monkey Island Now as i write about it, this game could probably be higher, because it's just perfect. The puzzles, humor, story and presentation were just top notch. If you haven't played it yet, go buy the remastered version, which has new drawn hd graphics but is apart from that identical to the original. 5. Max Payne Putting storytelling and atmosphere on a new level. An awesome story, told through graphic-novel-like cutscenes and regular inner monologues of the protagonist. Superb atmosphere. Also: great and new (!) FPS gameplay: bullet-time. 6. Bioshock Places after Max Payne, because Max Payne was first. Its very different but features the same strong aspects: perfect atmosphere, exceptional story and unique gameplay. 7. Starcraft: Brood War Ok so finally here it is: the best RTS ever. While it definitly would be placed higher in a multiplayer only list, i think place 7 is good enough in a "best games of all times list". 8. Final Fantasy 7 Personally my game of all time. After 16 years, it still doesn't bore me. And while one can endlessly argue about which Final Fantasy may be the best (let's just ignore the pc-only condition for a sec) i never experienced another mechanic with equal excitement: weapons, armor, accessoirs, materia. just love it. 9. Mafia Ok i guess i'm a bitch for great storys. Or i'm running out of ideas. But this is just awesome if you have a tiny-itzy-bitzy thing for the mafia genre. The gameplay is also great: driving cool cars, walking around in trench-coats, shooting the lovely tommy gun. 10. Anno 1404 So this i didn't even want to put here, but it is just so fucking flaweless. Everyone who likes city-building and business-simluations should get sucked in in an instant. The game starts simpel and offers one new option at a time, getting more and more challanging as time goes on and stays that way even after hours into it.
Honorable mentions in no specific order: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Dragon Age: Origins No One Lives Forever Simon The Sorcerer Deus Ex Bastion Portal 2 ....
shit, i could go on and on and on....

1: Starcraft Brood War - Best 1v1 multiplayer game 2: Counter Strike 1.6 - Best team multiplayer game 3: Diablo 2:LOD - Best time sink, incredibly satisfying game to collect loot
4: The Last Of Us - Best single player story-driven game, despite being limited by PS3's obsolete hardware and technologies. The rustling of my feels was priceless. This game was surprising and impressive in its unique ability to do that to me.
5: Chrono Trigger - Best RPG, previously my favorite SP game, may resist the test of time better than The Last Of Us. 6: Mass Effect 2 - An excellent RPG, with most of the qualities of the trilogy and none of the faults. 7: Bioshock Infinite - A great game with a fun, interesting story. A bit crippled by its largely standard gameplay. 8: Tomb Raider - Great action game which did a fine job maintaining the feeling of urgency and danger. 9: Civilization 5 - Just a fun time 10: The Witcher 2 - Fun SP game which gives a challenge. Gameplay is different from most games I play.
This is a list of games which are my favorites for my reasons. I don't like racing games, I don't like sports games, and I'm especially picky with certain genres. The list has many story-driven games, as I've been more into those lately. My list doesn't include games which I consider to be classics or games which were awesome at the time - it only includes games which I STILL consider to be amazing games.

Explanations in spoiler. + Show Spoiler +1. IMO the best RTS ever made. This game has so much depth it's insane. Regardless of whether or not the game is intentionally this good (some of the retarded mechanics and unit movements are what makes the game amazing), it's phenomenal. 2. Everything about #1 except less by a fair amount. 3. I love Counterstrike. I've played it since I was like 8 years old or something, and I still play now. 4. The first time I played Half Life I thought it looked incredible, and I still do. 5. The height of WoW, IMO. I played WoW a fuckton, and BC was my favourite expansion. In fact I quit after I played some WolK. BC had it all, man; it had it all. I think it was pretty inevitable that the game would get worse after BC, since the items scaled pretty retardedly from Vanilla to BC, but BC had the perfect amount of satisfying gameplay, difficulty, and community. 6. What a sick party game to play with friends, but a lot of people don't realize how much depth Melee has; it's nuts. This game is HARD! Once you start learning all of the tech skill and trying to do it you realize how incredibly the pros are. Like if you watch for the first time you see fox jump and do a back air and then use the reflector, but if you know what you're watching you actually just saw a short hop-bair-fastfall-Lcancel-shine-wavedash in like a second. Fast hand speed, quick reactions, decision making and fucking sweet action. 7. Diablo 2 is fucking cool. I've dumped a lot of childhood into this game, and it was all worth it. I think one of the coolest parts about this game is the fact that gold is worth nothing, and you have to go find other players to trade with. You also have to get run through stuff and grind runs with people, so you're forced to play with others. I played Diablo 3 the whole game through and never played with another person... I don't even know how to join a public game. 8. The music, the graphics, the sfx, the monsters. Dope. People don't usually think about how important it is to have really satisfying menu clicks in a game, and this is a game where it really counts. Man. What a sweet game. 9. HAVE YOU PLAYED THIS GAME???? I dunno what this game is like when you're remotely good at it, but I would just describe it as fucking sweet gut visceral action. Shit just blows up. Awesome. The resource system is so cool... you can turn energy into ore! Plus you can mine trees and rocks and dead robots for resources! SICK! This is one of those games where there's a million things to do all at once, so you can feel overwhelmed, but who gives a shit because you're running your K-bots around killing shit! 10. Tyrian. So sick. Ballin' music, sfx, fast pace, blowing shit up.

1. Heroes of Might and Magic 2 I started playing this game in 1996, still playing it occasionally. In total I've spent more time on it than any other game, probably in the thousands of hours. It's a huge step up on its predecessor and the template for the much better known HoMM3. The gameplay is leaner, harsher, and all of the faction and units feels more unique, making it my favourite of the series. 2. StarCraft: Brood War Epic single player and 10 years worth of multiplayer for me. Since this is TL, no need to detail its qualities.
3. Unreal Tournament A classic for both competitive players and casual fans like me. The great variety of modes and mods means you need not be a twitch master to enjoy yourself online for years. The gritty industrial look is a nice touch, and the voice acting is the best I've seen in any game whatsoever. And the impact hammer is just a genius design.
4. Fallout The first and best of the series, with the greatest atmosphere of ruin and desolation(Fallout 2 overdid it with the jokes). The time limit on the main quest gives it a tension that all the later game lacks. Also has the most flexible structure - in my first playthrough I stumbled on the final boss and killed him mid-game without even knowing, just "wow why is there this guy with such a deep backstory in the middle of nowhere".
5. Freespace 2 Imagine Brood War from a wraith's viewpoint, flying around trying to keep away the scouts while the BCs and carriers duke it out. There is only one word to describe it: epic. The gameplay itself is only good (physics is practically non-existent), but the sheer atmosphere and scale of battles raises the game to be great. It's proof that you don't need great graphics to create incredible immersion. The campaign rivals Brood War's in scope and drama, and the missions even affect each other based on your performance.
6. Mass Effect I admit that the sequel has better gameplay and more fleshed out characters, but this game beats it hands down in terms of storyline and subplots. The game is packed with epic, experience-defining moments (fall of the matriarch, the nuke, and the oh so breathtaking spacewalk) and provides some thought-provoking plot points (the sentient tree, dialogue with the Reaper, the rationality of Saren, the role of the Keepers). Overall a great sci-fi, whereas the sequel is more of a thriller/fantasy set in space.
7. Half-life I don't even like FPS that much, but this game is just engrossing. For a linear game there is a remarkable sense of exploration, and there is never a dull moment when you think "ok let's just get to the next part". Too bad I've never got past the giant alien spider, so I don't know how it ends. But that probably can't take away from the game's greatness.
8. Jagged Alliance When your special force team consists of a Russian major who doesn't speak English, a half-crazy Cuban bomber, a Schwarzenegger clone who acts like a man-child, and a drug addict who can't even shoot - all of whom you've picked yourself - you just know this is a great game. The gameplay is very unforgiving though, not only do your soldiers die quickly, but practically any shot taken will disable them for at least the remainder of the mission. But if you can get through the saving and loading without breaking your keyboard, it's a game with incredible freedom and depth of gameplay.
9. Borderlands A refreshing take on the grind-your-gear genre where everything is really well done, from the comic style, the gameplay, weapons and skills, and the huge amount of content. Perfect if you just want to have fun.
10. Gears of War The modern-day Contra, enough said.

I never played broodwar back in the days, so i cant judge it. but playing it now, i dont get a whole lot of fun out of it honestly.

1. Final Fantasy 7 (pc version) 2. Broodwar
question... can we have an entry for "a mud/mush/text-based game"? i'm sure that each person who has played a mud will consider it in their top 5 list of games they've ever played, due to the insane scope and detail that many muds contain. ill add it to my list and if other people add it then i guess itll be a valid entry

Hard to pick which individually would fit on a list, since it would probably just depend on what each person had played.

A lot of people are posting console ports in this thread like KOTOR and Mass Effect. Personally I think they should be left out unless they were heavily improved through mods.
My list:
1) SC2 2) WC3 3) Minecraft 4) Civ 5 (BNW made it really great IMO) 5) Dragon Age Origins (with mods) 6) SC:BW (sorry, I didn't play it much before SC2 came out...) 7) Rome Total War 8) TES Oblivion (with mods) 9) Crusader Kings 2 10) Civ 4
Unfortunately I never got around to playing Half Life 2, Skyrim, Portal 2, Alpha Centurai, Baldurs gate, diablo 2, hotline miami, etc. which probably would have taken some spots on this list. Hopefully I'll get around to playing them someday soon (I've been procrastinating with Half Life 2 for almost a decade now?!)

Craaap. I hate ranking games in this manner (or anything tbph) because I love the variety that art and entertainment allow, and because a game like Thief is so different and impossible to compare with say, Brood War. That being said I will then just list a bunch of games that had a major emotional impact on me growing up. Also for games like Mass Effect, I honestly view that as a single entity but for that one I'll choose my favorite of the three. They are (in no particular order):
- Thief: The Dark Project
- Star Wars: Tie Fighter
- Half-Life
- Starcraft (includes Brood War)
- Diablo
- Star Wars: KOTOR
- Mass Effect I
- Warcraft II
- No One Lives Forever II
- Dragon Age: Origins
I guess that means give each of these games a rating of 5.5 as I don't want to play favoritism for the above reasons.
The problem with this only top 10 is that I've been playing PC games since the mid 1980's and could also go on to list these games as additionally having big impacts on my life as a gamer:
- Team Fortress 2
- F.E.A.R.
- Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
- Bioshock
- Batman: Arkham Asylumn
- Half-Life 2
- Portal
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein
- Deus Ex
- Theif II: The Metal Age
- Sim City 2000
- Diablo II
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Eye of the Beholder
- Ultima III: Exodus
Seriously, I could go on from here as well...

Beyond Starcraft and Planescape I could probably interchange the order of the games, but I'll try and put them in a meaningful order.
1. Starcraft - Brood War
2. Planescape: Torment
3. Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic II
4. World of Warcraft
5. Dragon Age: Origins
6. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
7. Heroes of Newerth
8. Hitman: Blood Money
9. Rome: Total War
10. Civilization IV
My list was primarily based off hours spent in the game, how often I recommend(ed) it to friends, and the amount I obsessed thinking about it when not playing it. These lists are difficult to compose because it might change depending on the mood I'm in (especially from 3 and onwards.) BW and PS:T are sacrosanct in their positions.

1. StarCraft II 2. StarCraft: Brood War - I've been playing since 2000 and have had an amazing time with the game but I have to say that SC2 has been a much more intensive ride for me, year for year 3. Deus Ex 4. Knights of the Old Republic I 5. League of Legends 6. Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Some of the gameplay actually supersedes DX2000 in my opinion, but the shitty boss battles take it down a few notches 7. Heroes of Might and Magic III / Heroes Chronicles 8. WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne 9. Halo: Combat Evolved 10. Unreal Tournament - not sure if I want the classic '99 one or the 2004 one (invasion RPG so fun :D)
|
My top 10:
1. Warcraft III 2. Heroes of Might and Magic III 3. Counter-Strike 4. Left 4 Dead 2 5. Age of Empires 6. Starcraft Brood War 7. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 8. Starcarft II 9. Dota 2 10. Age of Empires II
Many old-school games ^^
|
I'm not quite sure about how to rank them (it's so hard to compare different genres...), but here's my list anyway:
1. Civilization IV - The sequel doesn't even come close. 2. WarCraft III - The most played game at all LAN parties I've been to. 3. StarCraft 2 - I'm torn between SC:BW and SC2. I prefer the regular ladder in SC2, but I can't really forgive that they destroyed what was UMS maps. 5. World of WarCraft - A lot of Blizzard games... 4. StarCraft: Brood War 6. Myst - Maybe the best adventure game. 7. Baldur's Gate II 8. Dungeon Keeper - I just loved playing this game as a kid 9. Heroes of Might and Magic III 10. King's Quest VI - Another wonderful adventure game. The best in the King's Quest series.
|
No particular order.
- Starcraft: Brood War
- Civilization IV
- XCOM: UFO Defense
- Hell Night
- NetHack
- Minecraft
Actually, I'm out. I never was one to buy much games xD
|
- Starcraft: Brood War
- Civilization Series
- Minecraft
- TribalTrouble
- Battle for Westnoth
- Portal
- Portal 2
- Diablo series
- Star Craft 2
- Beyond Good & Evi
- Psychonauts
|
1. Baldur's Gate 2
2. League of Legends ( I know, but there is a reason why it's so successful. Took the best parts of Dota and made it simplified enough for casuals to enjoy)
3. Diablo II (Nostalgia, the good multiplayer world, addictiveness. It's a terrible game if you look at it piece by piece but there was something about it that made you play it over and over again)
4. Simcity 2000
5. Broodwar
6. Counter-strike
7. Star Wars X Wing Alliance (God, this game had a great playthrough storyline with a lot of action)
8. Dragon age origins
9. Rome: Total War
10. Black & White

The list has many story-driven games, as I've been more into those lately. My list doesn't include games which I consider to be classics or games which were awesome at the time - it only includes games which I STILL consider to be amazing games. PC games, dude! Brett 8/10 will have to do... 9/10 considering that Chrono Trigger can easily be emulated on PC.
to clarify, emulating on a PC does not count. This is a game about PC games. Simultaneous releases or nearly

My votes are more about franchises, in a way, but not quite. Meh. 1. Starcraft 2. Doom 3. WarCraft 4. Quake 5. Dune 2 6. Metroid/Castlevania 7. Civilization 8. Shadow of the Colossus Portal 9. Final Fantasy 10. Zelda
edit: shit, you want solid PC... then Shadow of the Colossus is out. Hm, put in Portal then, whatever. edit2: No Metroid game was ever made for PC? WTF.. then call it Metroid/Castlevania, because people usually name the whole genre with these two series. And Castlevania has some PC titles.
Honorable mention: Stronghold.

Im definitely a little biased towards doom, but with it's massive sales, kickstart of deathmatch (People were slacking off at school and work playing doom deathmatches) and creation of the first large speedrunning communities in 1994 I can feel too terrible putting it first. Doom set the groundworks in a multitude of areas and is still played by many today. I've seen many mapmaking projects that get anywhere between 1-50 people working on them today.
Im a little iffy with AoE: The Conquerors. Great game but I think this is my weakest choice in the list.
Also, I felt the atmosphere of diablo 1 was far superior to diablo 2.

My list 1Brood war. I have never loved a game like this before or after, where even a long losing streak left me looking for more. 2 Kotor1 One of the few games I can replay over and over 2a kotor2 I really like these games 3 D2. Pity blizzard made the third a console game but released the pc port first. 4Civ3 so many hours of my life gone forver. 5 dota The closest I ever got to bw for my competitive drive. 5a dota 2 6 TF2 I like hats ok 7 quake such a great shooter 8Half life just such a great game 9 Portal 10 Fall out 3. I think it took the the series a bit beyond the first games, but its close with the other games and new vegas

1. TES III: Morrowind. OMG I played this for like 300 hours, I am still so in love with Vvardenfell. I'm going to get into ESO when it comes out just so I can go back to Morrowind and nerdgasm. I wrote fan non-fiction for this game. And it was published on the internet. 2. Baldur's Gate II. I missed the boat on Planescape: Torment when it was current, so this still holds a special place in my heart. 3. StarCraft. I played the original WAY more than Brood War. No regrets. This game was fantastic even in vanilla. 4. Portal. Highest concentration of perfect game design I have ever seen. 5. Dwarf Fortress. Especially drunk. 6. Total Annihilation. This game was hideously balanced for competitive play, but it was SO COOOOOOL. God, I would make custom games with indestructible defensive structures so I could build an army of stealth fighters and individually micro them to dodge missiles, just because the combat physics were that good. 7. Dragon Age: Origins. In my opinion, the pinnacle of the BioWare cinematic RPG line. Super fun combat, great writing, pretty cool original IP. 8. SimCity 2000. Another one on the "holy crap how did I have that many hundreds of hours to put into a game" bandwagon. Then I found a copy (in French!) floating around the web and downloaded it last year, and it was still just as awesome. 9. TES V: Skyrim. Like Morrowind, but with way better combat and graphics, but in a less cool province. 10. Asheron's Call. I'm not sure this game really deserves its place on this list, but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for introducing me to the idea that playing videogames with other people (whoa!) could be lots of fun.

Okay here we go. 1. Starcraft: Brood War. Invented competitive RTS, a genre I still worship today. Showed how a game can live its own life with a community behind it, and how games can become more than just a video game. 2. Quake 3. With its many variants and mods, still imo the best multiplayer shooter today. Too bad it's dead. 3. Planescape: Torment. Black Isle's crowning achievement from the Interplay glory days. Combined atmosphere with great writing. Better than Baldur's Gate series just because of the setting. 4. Master of Orion 2. One of the very first 4x games with multiplayer. It took forever but we had time back then. 5. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. The best designed roguelike available to play today. Combines infinite variation with its own oddball sense of balance. 6. XCOM: UFO Defense. Only a 6th? Seems like it should be higher? Well, the competition is fierce. We have two 90s era Microprose games now, so let's find something else. 7. Fallout 2. Introducing the horrors of drug addiction, prostitution, organized crime and things much worse to a poor innocent ten year-old. Better than Fallout 1 not because it is that much better, just because it is larger and longer. 8. Warcraft 3. The Frozen Throne. Not because it was that spectacular on its own, it gets a mention for the most succesful implementation of user generated content ever. Even if War3 melee and campaigns bored you, custom maps had everything you could possibly want, from casual fun stuff like Uther Party, to the living videogame hell like DotA. 9. Europa Universalis 3. Putting the 3rd 'cuz I haven't played the new one yet. Having a strategy game titan like EU so far down the list seems unfair and wrong, but honestly the titles here are all so good. EU3 showed us you didn't need silly Blizzard things like death animations or balance to have fun playing a game. 10. Company of Heroes. IMO the best of Relic's RTS games. With less emphasis on economy and more on tactics and micro, Relic finally found a good balance with CoH. Combined with nice graphics and some of the most engaging audio in any RTS game it gets my last point.
So yeah. Gaming _was_ better in the 90s. It's not just nostalgia.

Been a PC gamer since 1996. This is a very personal list...I care about how the games affected me, not necessarily the 'best' games.
1. Planescape: Torment (1999). Replayed it this year. Still the best. The combat isn't really that bad...not worse than say Arcanum or Baldur's Gate 1. The writing, creativity, variety of philosophies and characters. It's truly great.
2: The Void (2009). Amazing, stupidly amazing game. If a game was a rich and epic poem this would be it. Game as art but uses the Game part very effectively to build emotions and gives an incredibly unique experience to the player. Check it out on Steam if you like weird, hard, crazy, explorative gaming experiences that aren't afraid to hide LOTS of things from the player, quite intentionally.
3. Deus Ex (2000). Replayed it this year, still amazing, and still does some things that new games do not have the guts to do.
4. Vampire: Bloodlines (2004). Possibly the best written game of all time. Very replayable because it's always a joy to play through with a new bloodline.
5. Baldur's Gate 2: ToB (2000, 2001). Epic.
6. Star Control 2 (1992). I love this game. And it ain't just nostalgia: I first played it in 2007. Download it for free here (called ur-quan masters for copyright reasons) http://sc2.sourceforge.net/
7. Alpha Protocol (2010) I know...WTF, right? It's in my top 10 because it is simply a joy to play over and over again. Like Vampire, I doubt I will ever tire of playing this game. Best example of plot reactivity I've seen in a game.
8. Grim Fandango (1998). Replayed this year. I would usually have this in the top 5, but I think it actually doesn't hold up quite as well over time as some other adventure games like MI2. Still, it has the most engrossing and immersive writing/atmosphere/overall ambiance and mood of any game I've played. So well written. Shitty controls and some stupid puzzles though.
9. Fallout (1997). The sense of freedom in this game is almost unrivaled (except from Bethesda games), and unlike Bethesda games it is well written and has compelling quests/characters.
10a/10b. System Shock 2/Half-Life (1998/1999). Can't choose between the two. I just can't. So...I guess just pick one. I do think Half-Life 1 holds up better than Half-Life 2. System Shock 2 is great as well.
Honorable Mentions: (roughly in order, probably forgetting some good ones)
Fallout 2 Monkey Island 2 The Longest Journey Morrowind Civilization 2 Mass Effect 1 Half-Life 2 The Walking Dead Full Throttle Bioshock Portal Braid Maniac Mansion: DoTT Quake Monkey Island 3 Fallout: New Vegas

Ok then, heres mine. Note: Im very much a Blizzard game player and I know I rather play few games more over many games a little. I've probably missed lots of great games on peoples list but when I get hooked into a game I can play it for weeks or month without barely touching any other game.
1. World of Warcraft. Much can be said about it, the common perception seem to be overall more negative than positive. But for me this game has taken more hours of my life than any other game. And even if you dont enjoy the game anymore (or ever did), no one can deny that this game has been one of the most (if not the most) successful game ever and absolutely crushing everything any other game company could muster in the same genre. When people make "greatest games of all times" lists in 10, 15 or 20 years when WoW servers might have closed, people will put things into perspective and this game will be high up on lists everywhere.
2. Civilization II. Kept me busy so much before I got hooked into WoW. I tried both Civ3 and Alpha Centauri and neither of them kept me playing for more than one play through. But Civ2 I could play over and over and over again winning in different ways with different styles or just fooling around going to war with everyone. Awesome game.
3. Baldurs Gate II (and ToB expansion). Didnt spend as close as much time on this one as many others on the list. And the I never found this game to have the same replayability as say Civ2. But I dont think any other game has had me more interested during my first play through. The story is freaking amazing, probably the best. Irenicus is the best villain of all games of all time. I can hear so many of the conversations with him in my head any time I think of it, whoever voice acted him did an absolutely stellar job. I cannot be caged! I cannot be controlled! Understand this as you die, ever pathetic, ever fools! So while this might not win any prizes in the hours-spent-on-category, its enough to make me put it as 3rd.
4. Starcraft II. Its gotta go somewhere. Again for different reasons than most of the above, namely e-sports reasons. I played it a descent amount during WoL but barely touched HotS. Yet it still keeps me there at my computer watching just about any major tournament. The combined skill ceiling of pure mechinics plus strategical thinking blows any other game out of the water.
5. Warcraft II. Im not sure why, but I never got hooked by Warcraft III. I played the first campaign and a bit of the second but kinda lost interest, and I generally didnt like the hero system and limited supply count. Warcraft II however I did play a lot and was probably my first real online multiplayer experience. I had lots of fun playing both "macro games" and silly 32x32 maps on Battle.net. I also enjoyed making funny maps with the editor and playing around with it.
6. Counter Strike. I never played Half Life and it took me a long time to try CS. But when I eventually did it made me put a good amount of hours into it. It shines when you can play 3v3/4v4/5v5's with friends and might still be my top game in that category. Perfect for LANs. But as I also spent a good deal online it gets a solid 6th spot on my list.
7. Dota II. Lots of "II's" on my list I realize, lol. Anyway, its very much possible this will be way higher if I am to make another list in a year or two. As I said, I often play few games a lot rather than many a little. And right now, that one game I play a lot is Dota II. Not much to say since I havent played it for that long compared to many other games, but I thoroughly enjoy it. Its also great to watch as an esport.
The last three games will be slightly harder to judge as theres not many left that has had me hooked for a long time. I think I'll just finish up with a few good-but-not-great Blizzard games and something else. So...
Edit: I know the OP said dont edit, so here is what 8-10 looked like pre-edit: + Show Spoiler +8. Diablo III. Good game, great skill system. Item hunting kept me hooked for a while but eventually that just gets boring after a while too. Its not anywhere as bad as people try to make it out to be, but to me its not a top contender either.
9. Diablo II. About as good for its time as D3 was for its own time I feel. Same here, had me playing a good amount of hours and had me spending a fair amount of time hunting for items to maximize my char, but eventually I got bored of this game too.
10. Age of Empires II. And another "II" last on the list lol. Not much to say. Good game, fun to play through, but wasnt that massive time consumer many other games were. But I didnt just remember another game I spent a lot of time on. Namely:
8. Realms of Arkania: Star Trail. Its probably sort of a random game to be on the list. I was very young when playing it and my English was lacking back then. Its also the 2nd game in a trilogy of three games. Funnily enough I never tried either of the other two. I cant remember how we exactly came to play exactly this game and no other, it doesnt make any sense looking back at it. Maybe it was just a random game purchase that went right? But it was my first RPG experience (which evertually would be topped off by BG2) and for that reason it still holds a special place in my heart. And for its time it was probably a solid RPG.
9. Diablo III. Good game, great skill system, somewhat lacking story (imo). Item hunting kept me hooked for a while but eventually that just gets boring after a while too. Its not anywhere as bad as people try to make it out to be, but to me its not a top contender either.
10. Diablo II. About as good for its time as D3 was for its own time I feel. Same here, had me playing a good amount of hours and had me spending a fair amount of time hunting for items to maximize my char, but eventually I got bored of this game too.
Edit: Spelling and shizzle.
