Sometimes the Automated Ban List is no longer enough. After all, when people get banned off TL, they get sent to Disneyland, of all places. Besides being barred from talking to other people on this site, it's not really much of a punishment, even if the mod who bans you treats you like a special snowflake and includes an oh-so-sweet goodbye message along with it.
The ABL? That's weaksauce.
\
Sometimes you need something more, something with a bit more grit, with a bit more reality, to make your day.
Now that's what I'm talkin' about.
Ladies and Gentlemen... I present to you the world of for-profit real-life automated ban lists... aka mugshot websites.
mugshot-catalog.com mugshots.com mugshotsworld.com mugshotsonline.com
Feel free to browse these sites. Notice how they're all load super-fast? That means somebody is paying out the nose for a decent CDN... but these sites are also all ad-free.
How do these sites make money?
They charge you to take pictures down from them.
Yep. If you get arrested (note: not convicted of a crime - just picked up by the police on suspicion of having committed one), the website in question will index your name, height, weight, date of birth, and your police photo. In order for them to stop, you've gotta pay them anywhere between 20 and 60 bucks. And just to ensure that everyone can see this information, these sites are among the top-paying sites for search-engine optimization, just to maximize the negative publicity value. This means that whenever anyone puts your name into a search engine, if police think you committed even the slightest misdemeanor, guess what pops up?
So go nuts, TL! Have fun googling up all your friends on these sites. (Don't forget to use the "site:" prefix to limit your search.) It sure beats stalking them on facebook. For example, I just found out one of my high school friends got booked for theft, narcotics possession, and 3rd degree burglary. Looks like he's facing three to five.
You could also try googling members of the SC2 community. (That's how I wound up finding out about this new and fast-growing consumer internet space - I googled someone's name and found that person on mugshot-catalog.com)
Last but not least, you could always just browse through recent bookings at your local correctional facility. Sorry Europe, no one's doing this for the EU just yet, but I'm sure one day your cash-strapped local police departments will enter into revenue-sharing agreements with these websites too!
Doesn't this make you feel proud of how clever and helpful human beings are?

I don't know how to feel about this one. It's hilarious and pathetic at the same time.
I laughed when i read this: "BROTHER OF FORMER CEO OF MOVIE EFFECTS COMPANY DIGITAL DOMAIN ARRESTED FOR STANDING IN MIDDLE OF WEST PALM BEACH, FL INTERSECTION YELLING RACIAL SLURS"
Poor CEO...

Is that for real ?! Don't you need an authorization to publish someone's picture ? Not sure it exists in every country but that's what I think is called "right to image".

You can already pay Kennigit so that he requests someone you don't like to be banned.

That's what I'm taking away from this as well.

They've been arrested, different than randomly posting someone's profile picture. This is hilarious though, I have something like this in paper print that comes with the local newspaper.

As far as I understand arrests and mugshots are a matter of public record.
I'm pretty sure this won't fly in most EU countries. You're not even allowed to publish the name of the accused until they are convicted (with some exceptions).

yeah mugshots and arrest records are indeed public record in the united states, rights become limited when you elect to impinge upon others. It's a bit unfortunate, because as you've said it implies guilt especially in high profile cases. Implied guilt prior to commencement of trial in high profile cases can really ruin juror impartiality. Buuuuuuuuuuut also i understand that it has its benefits as well.

This is pretty disgusting. It's plain extortion, and those who cannot afford to pay will be disadvantaged over those who can pay.

Some of these pages look like the cast of a gang bang. One hispanic lady and sixteen African-American gentlemen...

Yeah...and you have to do this for every single database (site), and they can just open another one.

I doubt these databases can be classified as "fair use". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#Purpose_and_character Some of these sites links directly to an attorney website who'll do the procedure to "expurge" your record. How is that fall under fair use. Well at least the sites with attorneys links are not a scam, they're selling a procedure that will erase your records...most of those sites you just pay to have your name removed for the website only, so they can just have another site linked to the same database and make you pay as long as they want.
