Spoiler I guess?

I think I'll stop listen to the internet. After bumping into a decent amount of comments about how great the game is (they generally go like this "BEST GAME OF ALL TIME" or like this "LENGENDARY!!!!!!!!!"), i've decided to give it a go and well....... it didn't turn out as expected. The game is straight up BAD, no where close to all the fuss people are making. The story is about a random personality-less kid (who always carry a katana sword for some reason) with his unrealisticly smart friend Lucca, who first willingly to risk their life to save a girl they've just met 5 minutes ago and then, for some weird reason, think they're the only hope to save the future (yes, a bunch of teenager will surely be able to kill a massive monster that can practically destroy the whole planet). The game then went on with the group of friends travel back and forth in time, doing random things that somehow will progress the story etc. etc. (I think it's important to note that the story is significantly better 5-7 hours in but still below mediocre)

The gameplay is pretty standard repetitive RPG gameplay. The good side is you have non-random battles. Other than that? "update" weapons and armor, get experience get skills....standard jazz.

I agree the the game is 17 years old but to call this game "THE BEST OF ALL TIME"??? I mean the only thing that can transcend through time properly are the story (which was mostly shit) and the music (which was pretty decent with a couple of memorable songs). The game play wasn't exactly outstanding, even when you compare to games of its time. Compare this game to games like FFVI (1 year earlier) or Metal Gear Solid (3 years later) is a joke.

All in all, it's a decent game (for its time) with some good, but mostly bad, things.

I guess nostalgia is a big factor in this but PEOPLE, STOP USING YOUR NOSTALGIA TO RECOMMEND GAMES TO OTHER PEOPLE.

P.S. On the same note, am I the only one found Xenoblade overhyped? It however has deceptively good songs though. Just wish its world and music would have ended up with a better story and characters.

I hate all this singing

Chrono Trigger isn't the best game of all time, point taken, but it's definitely the best of the "classic JRPG with a mute main character and stereotypical party members (all of whom have a mysterious secret identity you must help them regain/discover)" games. Of which there are a lot.

It's long, it's actually replayable and most importantly, it's fun. In fact, I played Chrono Trigger for the umpteenth time this summer and it was still fun. I can't say that about other JRPGs of any generation.

No RPG comes close in story and Yasunori Mitsudas soundtrack is timeless, I still listen to CT songs today. It blows FFVI out of the water and while MGS is a fantastic game, it's hardly a joke to compare them, just like CT was a brilliant game at the time it was released, so was MGS. Both games are games you come back to a few times a decade to play though again for timeless story, music and characters.

Nostalgia has nothing to do with it, I recommend CT to people all the time and I've never ever heard any complaints. On the contrary. The only reason I wouldn't recommend CT to someone is because it ruins their future gaming since no jRPG ever makes a dent.

Hmm, I guess different people look for different things in a game. I played Trigger way back when i was a child and loved it. The characters' combo system makes for more party selection than just standard "pick the best 3/4/5 ppl among the ones you have".

Either way, might i recommend
Vagrant Story (usually appeal to more veteran fans)
Tales of Eternia (the story is not going to impress you, but the combat is mad fun, esp later on as ur skills develop)
Devil Survivor 2 (one of my recent favourites, also it's harder than most standard RPGs, which is good)

On the FF side of things, 6 and 7 probably age the best. If i have time to replay any FF, it ll probably be either of them.
Look. Only Forward. See. Only Victory.

I dunno man, I played Chrono Trigger for the first time about two years ago and I think it's easily one of the greatest games ever made.

Nostalgia isnt a big factor it's a fantastic game, if whatever grading criteria you use for games doesn't align with that then that's fine but welcome to the minority

It's good for a JRPG, a genre you rightfully don't seem to enjoy much.
Edit : I think it's on par with FF6.

Sounds like you just dont like JRPGs then tbqh. Those are 2 of the best games in the golden age of the genre.

It's a cute little game which was amazing when you played it back then on the SNES as a kid but no way it's not the best RPG of all time. However it is still way better than the majority of JRPG lol.

The whole digital devil saga series imo, Altus is one of the greatest developer on Earth and from persona to nocturne all their games are fantastic.
I liked CT but I think I discovered it too late. I liked Chrono Cross better.
And ^ I also loved DQ8.

In my book, stuff like FF7 doesn't come anywhere close to CT. It's not the best RPG, but at the very least it doesn't make me fall asleep like FF7 does.
If you only played CT once, you surely didn't even discover all the alternate/hidden storylines. CT has like 20+ endings (most of them obviously involving you winning against Lavos). Those are an important aspect to the game. It's a game for explorers.

I definitely rank Tales of Phantasia above CT.
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

I really enjoy most of RPG's described in this thread; I'd be lying if I said I didn't think that Super Mario RPG is the best SNES RPG, but I realize I am in the minority with that one. Chrono Trigger certainly does have some amazing music and I think the art direction and musical style are the games strongest points. That being said, there are a select few pieces of music in Secret of Mana that I think are the best of their kind. The moral of the story is that I can't truly discriminate between these games, I love all of them.

Yeah, nostalgia doesn't factor into its greatness. I played the DS version first and I think it's fantastic.

Also, the music was "pretty decent"? Give me a break.

Mmmm. I feel as if earthbound, and any of the infinity engine rpgs are far superior to the Classic JRPGs of the past.

Chrono Trigger is clearly not the best RPG of all time.

...That would be Chrono Cross. :D

Most of your argument is based on how real the game could be. I'm going to refer to the Rule of Fun, the Rule of Cool, and Acceptable Breaks from Reality for this one.

I agree with you that using the word "best" is not a convincing argument, though. When it is, I feel like slapping whoever said it across the face.

You make me a sad panda, just because people like to overhype things doesn't mean Chrono Trigger isn't an amazing game. I can still pick it up and be wow'ed even now after playing through it a few times.

Earthbound IS one of the "classic JRPGs of the past," lol. One of the SNES' greatest for sure.
