Holy crap what a terrible terrible day on reddit. I come home from school to find destiny and co whinging about how this game is doomed to fail, the disbandment of slayers, and how people are just sick of the game already...
Is this the greatest RTS of all time? Well, technically speaking it is the most sucessful game of the RTS genre in existance to date, according to wikipedia at least. But in terms of strategy, gameplay and balance? In my 'humble' opinion BW was a better game (so far in SC2s relatively short existance) in terms of technique required and strategy. So where does this 'shit' , 'doomed to fail' and 'pathetic' game called SC2 rank on my imaginary list? right at #2.
It may be a long way off BW, but if BW was the peak of Mt Everest, SC2 has just started the ascent, and every other strategy game thus far is on the other side of the world in a swamp.
It's not the greatest game we could have hoped for, I realised that, but when you compare it to any other RTS to date, the balance and skill required is just amazing. We are very pessimistic and criticizing as a community, and I accept that I am part of that branch too. When someone rants about how shit multiple unit selection is and how it makes the game too easy I can tag along with them from time to time.
SC2 is not the game that we hoped would unite the whole world with Esports, and maybe (god forbid) league of legends will fill that role. But we have gotten a damn good effort out of Blizzard.
I realised this not too long ago, when I was so sick of losing to P that I just turned on C&C generals, one of my favorite games of my childhood. If you think the colossus is OP, just wait until you can build a nuke and hit anywhere on the map every 5 minutes, killing entire bases, and one unit that can blow up 10 buildings in a second. Lets not forget the US radar, which can see every position on the map for a limited time.
Then I turned on Battle for Middle earth, the strategy game I have played for the longest time behind BW/SC2, and micro is .....well there is none. It is a clump of units that just go into battle, and when I think of the delicate splits i see ForGG achieve everytime he streams, I can't help but go on and ladder again.
I'm not bashing these games at all (well, I am....sort of) as they may be more fun to some to play, but in terms of finesse, balance, micro and macro capabilities, and all the rest, they do not even begin to compare to the brilliance of what is SC2.
So when I logged into twitch tv just now, and saw starcraft viewers 3rd highest behind LoL and WoW, I laughed a little.
Because through all the histeria that is going on now, and all the disbandments and depression, I know this game isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and once people realise how far above the rest of its genre it is, they will feel the same as well.
I've loved this game for 2 years now, have witnessed my favorite players achieve greatness, and wept (no i havent actually.............) when they lose in heartbreaking fashion. I have read all of the esports articles i could find, and would always jump for joy whenever I saw Day9 on Forbes.
The world needs a MOBA (or whatever the fuck you call it) and that is where dota/lol comes in. The world needs to cater for people that love to level up a character just for the fun of it , ie Wow/Guild wars.
The world also needs a 1v1 competitive strategy game that has multiple races which use resources to build up armies and attack each other. And right now, SC2 is the best we could have hoped for.
GOOD JOB BLIZZARD!
TL;DR: I like chicken

Lies! Always kite with Legolas never not kite with Legolas. And microing the op gondor knights so you could kill everything without dying. And setting your uruks and gondor soldiers in turtle formation so that they wouldn't be rolled over by cavalry. And the lvl 1 poke wars with the hobbits. And the nazguls juking the fire archers to 1shot the siege stuff. But yeah the game was pretty braindead.
Nice post though ^^

After spending only a week in NYC Harlem area I love the chicken also!

I agree with you, although I have to say BFME2:ROTW, along with holding the official title for longest name for a video game, is the most satisfying thing ever invented in terms of RTS. Never have whole armies been destroyed faster than giant orc/goblin hordes being hit by Drogo's or Gandalf's level 10 ability, never have squads of archers been destroyed more thoroughly and thrown longer than if flanked by Knights of Gondor or the Nazgul, never have more carnage induced moments occurred than an expedition force of swordsmen being assaulted from the front and back by 10 cavetrolls. That game is pure and unrefined perfection!
Haha, i even miss the teleporting, impossible to kill dwarfs

Yeah in terms of RTS games, SC2 is the only popular game that's actually balanced. The whole spectrum of C&C games have been horribly imbalanced: mirage tanks of RA2, seekers in C&C3, nukes etc.. The AoE series was also pretty bad.. Even though each race in AoE2 had similar units, some were obviously better than others (Goths cannot build walls, wut?) AoE3 was so crappy that I didn't play it for long. The only other RTS that's really awesome is CoH, but that's not a game for the masses.
I like chicken.

I also like chicken. My favorite is when you can grill a chicken and they smother it in nice Honey BBQ sauce. Cooking it in the pans isn't that bad as well. My favorite quick meal with chicken is pan cooking it with coconut oil and then when it is 3/4 done, turn on my sauce pan that has 1/2 a cup of quinoa. By the time the chicken is done, so is the quinoa. I cut up the chicken, throw it in a bowl with quinoa and drench it in tapatio, bam, you got your self a stew baby!

lol based on what? Copies sold? SC1 sold 11 million copies while SC2 sold about 5 million.
You also make the mistake of looking at rts games through the glasses of esports. Games like RIse of Nations, Company of Heroes, AOE, and Empire Earth are much funner to play even though they would make pretty bad esports. nvm

And I probably didn't research this enough; It said it was the fastest selling, but not sure if it was the most sold of all time.
And yeah they may be more fun to play, which is what i said in my post about these games, but in terms of competitive play they are nowhere near SC2
