Dignitas/Curse vs MLG

Dignitas and Curse. Easily two of more known and widely respected teams League of Legends currently has to offer. Professional teams. This last adjective makes it impossible to regard this situation as a gag and forces us to pose some important questions.

Before that, in case you don’t know what I’m rambling about, do yourself a favor and follow this link. Or you could simply type ‘Dignitas’ and ‘Curse’ in Google, as I’m actually pretty late with this little write-up and the waves of rage already swept through our little, virtual universe. But let’s get back on track.

First and foremost, as fans and community are still what makes eSports so strong and unique, the decision Dignitas and Curse made is a slap in the face of the above. With players and casters thanking and stressing the importance of fans in the world of eSports at every turn, what we witness here is simple hypocrisy. Members of the community, who defend such an act should take a moment and ask themselves, whether they are capable of even the slightest criticism directed at the ones they worship. If not, eSports won’t be able to grow.

Second, eSports is still a fairly fragile industry, constantly proving itself in the face of other, more established sports. In order to stand its ground, eSports needs professionalism. Without ‘pros acting pro’ the dream of eSports getting really big is a futile one. Situations like this one strike a hard blow at the image of our beloved industry. Especially considering how much hard work is being invested in making tournaments live up to the latest standards.

Third, money. Whether we want it or not, eSports isn’t only about dreams and ideals. In order to maintain these, money is needed. eSports is business and with money on the line the need to act professionaly is even greater. Without sponsors and people willing to pay for the spectacles we all crave, the industry won’t get bigger. So to all pros who think that delivering the fans the best of your game just because they believe in you isn’t enough, consider this: if there’s cash on the table you can’t act like kids anymore.

Fourth and last, a question. I respect progamers for their skills and the hard work they put in to get where they are. That is why I can’t simply go all out on them in such situations. I always try to understand ‘why?’.

Why did they do that, is there some reason other than being silly, that pushed them to act in such an irresponsible and insulting way? Why did they lack the motivation to give their best? Was is the format they played in? Did they feel there is nothing left to prove? Did someone wrong them?

In the end no matter what the reason behind all of this was, we need to remember two things. First, never let things like this slide. Second, always give the players or teams a chance to explain themselves. Mistakes happen and as long we can talk about all of it in proper manner, a solution can be found. Even if punishment is a part of it.

Even though I dont give a single fuck about LoL I found the situation interesting.
During the ARAM game they had more viewers than ever I heard. But I still think it's shady that they got DQ'd but I guess everything comes at a price...

Price splitting seems to be a normal or at least accepted thing in (SC2) esports.
There was a thread back then which discussed the whole matter (Fayth, ToD and other progamers commented in it).

I personally understand the price splitting logic (though I dont really agree with it out of principle, but I'm not in their situation which requires to pay the bills with esports-money).
I definitely dont agree with what happened in the LoL tourney case with ARAM. If you split - try to play your best, people expect that and want to watch such a game.

Athletes do this all the time. Look at badminton in the olympics or the 1919 White Sox.

The thing is, DID THEY SPLIT? MLG THOUGHT they did, but did they? Curse denied it, I haven't read Digs statement yet though. The teams say they only agreed to play ARAM first game (and who cares about that) and MLG DQ'd them for price splitting, where's the evidence?

I read one of the LoL forum posts and I thought this stood out to me the most. League of semi-mediocre players. Thats how I look at Curse and Dig mostly. TSM, MME, CLG, Azubu, Garena teams, and especially the other Koreans are the best. Its not that Curse is bad its just that... yeah they are bad. On any given day they will claim to be so much better than half of those teams, especially TSM, and they then will lose in a most not spectacular fashion. I'm fine with this, I've hated their sportsmanship for a long time, I especially dislike SaintViscious who is just a total asshole, the guy who just makes the team this clod of douche. Dig isn't as bad, but they just broke the honor code with a team known for being prick-ish. If this were starcraft, they would be both banned and have all titles stripped from them. I'll be glad if they just drop, that team is just too volatile and over the top to be considered a legitimate e-sports team.

I really don't get why MLG went with LOL over Dota2 anyway. This major insult should be the push they need to bring them over to Dota... like 2GD said, not even LOL pros take their game seriously. I've tried watching LOL, and it just doesn't compare to Dota from a spectator standpoint

There's only two things I have to say about this matter.

1: I find it hilarious how this reinforces the stereotype of the LoL playerbase.
2: I hope this will lead to LoL being replaced with DotA 2.

THIS. Oh God, this.
It's incredible how even pros can't take the game seriously. What they did was not only unethical and very unprofessional, but very damaging to eSports as well (and maybe even illegal)... I hope MLG turns heads on this and FINALLY goes for DOTA2.

So by that logic, should Starcraft be pushed aside as well? We are not free of scandles ourselves.

On a side note I have no real issue with the ARAM and stuff, I think its fun and personally acceptable. I mean, sometimes spice is needed: Like cheese in starcraft to avoid seeing the same macro builds all the time. The plot splitting on the otherhand is pretty bad.

when did two SC2 players in an MLG final agree to throw good sportmanship and professionalism out the window and do the starcraft equivalent of "all random all mid" ?

LoL should get pushed aside because it is in every way inferior as an esport to Dota2, I just hope MLG comes to this realization as well. And I say this as someone who came to Dota2 after having played a fair bit of LoL

You would think that if they were gonna do something as stupid as this that they would at least be smart enough to do it quietly behind closed doors.

THIS.

I don't think any other rational argument is needed here... It's not about strategy (we're not discussing cheese or whatnot here)... It's about sportsmanship and ethics. WORKethics, mind you.

Not at MLG spefically, but stupid shit happens all the time in the SC2 community.

Also Riot spends mad cash on LoL, we'll have to wait and see if Valve does the same (apart from their annual private tournament)

Stop with the "hurting epsorts" crap. Every single competitive scene, up to even pro sports have shit like this go one. People are people and they will always try to have some fun and sometimes make mistakes while attempting this. The OP and a few of the posts in this thread have greatly exargerated the degree of how bad this situation is and the amount of effect it will have on esports as a whole.

Stop being sensationalist

Dota2 isnt too good of a game either. Neither is HoN but I prefer HoN any day over Dota2 both in playing and watching.

the only thing I can think that even comes close is naniwa probe rushing, in an ultimately meaningless game in a tournament he was already essentially out of. It's not even remotely the same.

Thank you all for responding, I'll definitely check out the thread Zocat linked, would like to see what it looks like on the "SC2 side of the fence".

Also, I didn't really mean to sound sensationalist Slaughter, eSports isn't as well established as other sports so I felt that if such situations became common (as far as I know they aren't atm BUT! like I said, I'll check out the SC2 thread on the same topic) it would hurt this industry to a much greater degree than others. Still, we're doing fine, that is true, plus, I liked that the teams issued apologies etc.

If you want a scandal the bw match fixing scandal is probably takes the cake.

My main point is that this goes on everywhere in every sport. It may of been misguided they wanted to give their fans something different and fun and entertaining. That is the point of any sport and in fact their stunt drew more viewers and got the live crowd really excited. The people who seem to be against it are those who are wrapped up in this concept of esports and that it must be super serious and professional all the time or it will die!

I just don't agree with that point of view and think they did a relatively minor transgression of agreeing to play that aram.
