So i just signed up for my first half ironman triathlon at Branson, missouri --> http://ironmanbranson.com/
The ironman 70.3 is only half ironman. Which consists of 1.2mile swim in open waters, 56mile bike, and 13.1mile run.
Needless to say i am beyond pumped. I have wanted to do one of these but never had a bike. But this summer i managed to get one and get some decent miles on it. + Show Spoiler +
It's actually an entry level road bike for like 940$ which is the cheaper end of road bikes, but i attached aerobars on it and reconfigured my saddle to make the aero position more comfortable.
The entry fee was really expensive because i didnt sign up early lol. 225, ended up being like 250 after tax and processing and everything. But i figured it was something that i was going to remember for the rest of my life so it was worth it. Funny that the date sept 23rd of this year is actually my 21st birthday as well.
In the past i have done 1 half marathon, 1 full, I have another full coming up 1 month after ironman branson.
Eventually in 2 or 3 more years i plan on doing the full Ironman which is 140.6 miles under 17 hours, 2.4mile swim in open water, 112 mile bike, and 26.2mile run.
Sounds corny, but i think i've found my life long passion/hobby. After finishing endurance races and training month leading up to them, the satisfaction is beyond words. anyways here is a video of what the event sorta looks but probably a lot less epic cuz the video is the world champion full ironman @ kona hawaii.
Get a full medical checkup before going for the race. You might have some underlying medical condition which may decide to trigger during severe exertion. It has happened to several people before; so better safe than sorry.
Good luck! I did full marathons before.. never gonna do that again.

I'm 20 right now, Will be 21 during my first half ironman.
19 during my first half marathon 20during my full marathon.
Good luck with your attempt. I'm planning on a Half Ironman myself for next year and a full Ironman in 2014. Just hope to have enough time for training .
I'm 28 myself but age is not a factor with these races. There are people well into their 40s - 50s who take part while not being professional athletes. It's probably the highest challenge one can set for himself (in terms of sports) and I totally support all of those who try it .
Is that a CAAD8? I am a huge bike junkie. I am doing my first triathlon in september. Just a sprint, I hate running more than 5-6 miles so I have 0 desire to do a full or even half ironman, but the training for a full one seems like a full time job in it's own. Good luck with it and update us on how it went!
Right on man, just make sure that you change tires on the trainer, I know a lot of people that make the mistake of using their normal tire on the trainer and go to ride and they have no grip at all.

And that trainer in the picture at the bike shop when i just got it, i needed to sit on it to get it fitted lol. I train mostly on roads/parks.
