So. Making stuff as Terran. In a lot of ways, this is the most straightforward race when it comes to actually building an army. Once the buildings are down, you really don't have many decisions to make about what units need to be created. That reactored barracks is making marines, the tech lab barracks is making marauders or ghosts, and even something like a tech lab starport always has a specific purpose, be that ravens, banshees, or battlecruisers. So the real decision about what to make doesn't come when the unit is created, it comes when the infrastructure is being placed. This actually makes creating units VERY easy for basically any Terran player before about the middle of master league. We simply don't need to almost ever decide that in game, we just follow our build order through to the late game, put down our buildings, and make whatever comes out of them.
If you want to know how to decide for yourself what buildings need to be put down and when (which in my opinion is unnecessary and time consuming for most players) then I would highly reccomend looking into some of Day9's vods, including his most recent daily as of this posting. I won't be talking about it here for a long time.
At the end of the day, what this means for Terran players is that in order to practice army creation, one of the most basic components of macro, all you need to learn is the timing on when to queue up your next round for each building, be constantly making supply depots and practice making that happen while microing your army. My favorite way to do this was the custom game type "Macro or Die." This game type limits your available queue to 2, and simply nukes you if you make too big a mistake. Hilarious. This isn't perfect, but it is certainly less stressful than simply playing ladder game after ladder game, and more productive than playing practice matches while just focusing on macro, and especially helpful with the limitation on queues. In this game mode, once you are capable of executing your build without attacking or being attacked, practice sending units while macroing. Once you can do that, just keep your camera on your army and macro, NO MICRO YET. The next step is obviously to begin adding micro, but when practicing macro always keep making units and depots forefront in your mind. Most of this is actually mental, and requires very little speed or dexterity, so training the mind is the most important thing.
Tomorrow I'll start describing my methods for fixing my play, and what my plans are as I continue to improve in the future.
