The First Step
In order to be able to develop our abilities for any activity we must first determine what those skills are. It is also important to begin as broadly as possible, and then find more specific techniques to focus on as we improve. As an example of why this is important, consider having taught someone the technique of splitting their units perfectly, but never telling them how a much simpler a-move works. It's entirely useless. Because we don't want to learn useless things, we start with the three broad ideas of Knowledge, Decisions and Execution.
Knowledge
This is the single most important thing one must have to succeed at a game like SC2. You must know what is possible. You can have the best control in the world, but it won't save you if you haven't figured out how to make an observer to detect DTs, that a tech lab lets you research stim, or that larva are what Zerg use to make units. These may seem silly to most of you to even mention, but that is because these concepts are so extremely important you would never forget them. Knowledge like this is the foundation that guides the Decisions that need to be made, which I will cover here tomorrow.
