Haven't written a blog in a long time so thought it's time I wrote one lol. Diablo III needs no explanation. Everyone and his dog(well maybe not all dogs lol) know about the game. For those who don't know much about it, it's a hack and slash RPG game with an interesting story. It was released back in 2000 with an expansion in 2001. I remember playing the game and its expansion when I was younger.

I loved rolling a barbarian. I tried the other classes but I wouldn't go past the first act, usually the 5th quest was my max with either the necromancer or sorcerer. Regardless, it never got boring to just hack away at enemies, use different spells and explore every inch of every dungeon bit by bit. Searching for items and finding rare items was such a draw. I was always overjoyed whenever I found an unidentified or set item.

It had a strong appeal to me and I enjoyed every minute of it. Anyways, Diablo III is released and I'm really excited to continue the story and play the game. The major problem I'm experiencing right now is getting disconnected. There were server issues on the first day which is understandable but I get removed from the game now every 30 minutes to an hour which doesn't make sense since my internet connection is perfectly fine.

Having played through most of the first act, I'm finding that I don't enjoy the game as much as I used to. I did when I first started it but it almost feels like work to play now lol. I'm not exactly sure what is causing this though :/ While its a good idea that items are smaller so you can carry more, a rare items looks the same as a normal item which might not appeal as much to me? It could be due to the colors which are bright at times compared to the dark colors of Diablo II and that takes away from atmosphere? Maybe the story doesn't draw me in as much because the three prime evils were defeated in the last one?

Honestly, I'm completely lost as to why this is. I've been playing SCII since release(breaks here and there for school) and I still can play for 2-3 hours at a time yet I can't play Diablo III for that long without either getting kicked out from the server or getting really bored. It just lost its appeal I guess or maybe I'm just getting too old for games now since SCII is the only game that I play now. Curious if any other Diablo fans out there experienced the same thing or if it's just me?

Thanks for reading

I dunno about you, but in these days of the internet I just can't play single player stuff without getting very bored very fast, I have Skyrim, and it is sitting on my steam account with 25 min played, I got bored so fast. I can't get through final fantasy's any more, I haven't even finished HL2 yet. I just get bored so fast unless my internet is down (and even then I opt for football manager, or the UT2k4 campaign lol) and have to get back on online and compete against someone, which I can do no problem from when I get to to when I lie down.

Skyrim is basically a single player mmo. No wonder people get bored. Most overrated game in history imo.

About Diablo 3 I dont think you getting bored has anything to do with colors or atmosphere. A game like Torchlight is very colorfull but great fun cause you get these special items that Diablo 3 currently lacks. I am level 60 working on Diablo on hell and havnt found a single unigue (legendary) yet.

I'm in the same boat....

I kinda miss playing singleplayer games for hours and never getting bored, now I hesitate buying offline games.

I still get random disconnects as well, and it's never happened on any game before for me. Going into the second week of Diablo 3, this is a pretty big problem imo. I was a huge fan of D2, and I spent plenty of time soloing there, but in D3, I'm needing to rely more on friends and parties to keep up the excitement. I think I'm just getting jaded. And I think the barbarian kinda sucks comparatively (I rolled wrong ).

Hack'n'slash is extremely boring, so if you don't enjoy turning your brain off this isn't surprising.

Spoilers.

Risking my life (HC) vs some elite nasty affixpack for +10 vita on new blue item, i even forgot the name . Midgame really sucks, in D2 there are tons of middle class uniques that are worth fighting for and increase the joy immensely.

D2 was a slot machine hack and slash but boy it was fun, and the amtmosphere was 10 times better than in D3 when you are interrupted for 24355345 time to see the exact same lame story cutscene/monologue. And to be frank art in comparison to D2 is mediocre at best, and thats supposedly the strongest trait of D3...

I feel like i will elaborate more on that, D2 art was based around contrast, so you progressed from swamps, catacombs, pentagrams drawn with blood, into bright desert with worms egyptian-like tombs, arcane sanctuary than into jungle with aztec ruins etc. It was a journey, i never felt it in D3, while background progressed, it was all dark because of some foggy filter on it. In fact i have no lasting memories from D3 besides Belial first contact. While in D2 there was at least 1 or 2 moments in each act that put me in awe. Colors are shitty in D3, there is no contrasting, you venture through whole world of sanctuary yet you really dont feel the heat of sand, the wind of arreat etc. Weak contrast. Well there were few interesting areas but too few.

Next is story and narrating of it. Lame ass cutscenes you care on your first run became annoying already on your 2nd run, you already know what will happen and mash spacebar even before it happens. Whats the point? Diablo is game based on repetetiveness then why force people to listen to the same content over and over again its interfereing with the gameplay not improving . I dont want bosses to make big long monologues i prefer one sending-chills-on-my-spine "even death cannot save you from me" you got in d2. I still remember how i shitted myself when i played D2 for the first time 10 years ago when i heard it.

Credit where its due, Belial changing into his full stage was one of those few moments, but i cant put few moments over whole content which still looks slightly above average. And above average for something that has diablo as its name is equal to bad.

There are good elements like surroundings being devastated or reacting to aoe spells/abiltiies, your follower getting trapped suddenly before diablo fight, most of soundtrack was decent, UI (graphically) is really well made.

HC is putting people to big challange and its really one of few positives, its severely underpopulated which helps for AH balance, so if not for HC i would seriously stop playing. But bring god damn midgame itemization, because as HC player im really prone to repeat low/mid levels and those are incredibly boring compared to D2.

Haha I am completely the opposite. Ever since mass gaming starcraft and counter strike I have just completely gone off playing against humans. They are such shit, always ruining the experience of immersion by being power gamers. You have to join them to beat them of course, then it just becomes a grind to beat humans which is exactly what the rest of life is. A fun enjoyable experience in gaming is sinking into an immersive universe and enjoying a story and that's impossible with other people in the game.

I was having some horrible disconnection problems as well. What has worked for me is logging into the General chat channel and staying there. Strangely seems to fix everything. If you're on the NA server, add me LGZorkmid#1993 and we'll play!

@Lyter I didn't try Skyrim yet although I was close because I wasn't too sure how long I'll play it for. While I used to enjoy SP games, I think the only game that I've played the SP in the last couple of years is SCII.
@DaCruise Maybe you're right but I still can't figure out why lol. I'm going to just chuck it up to the disconnects so you lose the immersion as well as a lack of special items.
@HoriZoNXI Yep, somewhat of the same boat lol.
@DarkPlasmaBall Maybe, tbh I dunno. I wanted to roll Barbarian but I thought I should roll a Wizard. I'm still in the mindset of playing a Barbarian though because I try to get up close to the enemy XD The disconnects are also annoying so I agree, hopefully they get fixed.
@-Kira While I would agree with that, I never had issues before with hack'n'slash so it's just surprising but you are on to something
@bgx Nice writeup. Ya, the fog filter or whatever is really annoying. I have yet to finish the first act because of getting disconnected constantly so we'll see how I feel about the other acts and the general atmosphere. There are good features though, like the constant recording to give some story or on monsters. I also do like the soundtrack and the UI is very well done. I guess part of it has to do with the fact that we are going against the lesser evils and I wanted to fight the prime evils again.
*spoiler*
Yes I read somewhere that you have to fight Diablo again but I dunno what the background is or how the fight pans out in comparison to the Diablo II fight.
*spoiler*
@sc4k Competition is good though. SCII SP becomes boring after a while so you need to play MP. Take it from someone who played SP like 3-4 times now XD I agree though, it becomes like grinding but I don't think it's all that bad
@Zorkmid interesting, maybe I should try that. I'm going to try and finish a run through first but if I decide to do coop, I'll definitely add you then. Want to just get through once to see if the story is as bad as they say

Well don't worry, legendaries aren't that good anyway, if you check the AH, it's full of them.

Please don't try to replace Diablo 2 with 3. I started playing and I won't lie I was like, this isn't Diablo 2, this isn't as good, this isn't the childhood game I played. It took me a while but I eventually came round to telling myself that noshit diablo 3 isn't 2.

Also have you tried getting 3-4 people in your group? Diablo 2 was always best with friends, I prefer Diablo 3 with friends too.

ya no worries, I know the two games aren't the same and I like some of the new changes in Diablo III but even then, it's lost some of its appeal to me in comparison to Diablo II but that's fine and it doesn't mean I'm completely disappointed with how it turned out

I don't know if I'm alone on this, but I assume that most of the target audience for D3 never played D2 (12 years ago man!). There's something a bit sad going on when people played two videogames released more than a decade apart with a hardcore voracity.

If you think the game is foggy, you might want to change your video settings. I seriously have no idea what you guys are talking about when you say its foggy.

@Zorkmid Ya but I think part of it is that those who played Diablo II expected the same of Diablo III and while it's not crazy different or anything, the feel isn't the same. Probably nostalgia as well as some of the small changes here and there which contribute.
@Ghin I've played with the settings because it was laggy and I thought it was my video card but I dunno, I get that foggy feeling a decent amount(mostly outside) :/
