As of this moment, I am typing this blog with one hand while the other is supporting a ice pack on my increasingly swelling chipmunk sized cheeks.
So earlier I had my bottom wisdom teeth removed by the local dentist because they were beginning to emerge and would soon cause problems to my teeth formation. To start off, they injected these gargantuan sized needles into my gums to numb the surrounding area which surprisingly, didn't hurt at all. Next, they used a screwdriver-like? knife as well as a chisel to cut the tissue and gums around each tooth, this part was uncomfortable because it was very difficult to breath with a suction tube directly above your uvula. But it wasn't as uncomfortable as the next part when all the cutting was done, which involved using a chisel to literally uproot the tooth like a crowbar that caused some SERIOUS discomfort.
When the teeth were finally removed and cotton wedges were shoved to block the wounds from bleeding, I was done. I quickly rushed to the local Walgreens to pick up my prescribed Vicodin(painkillers) and 2 gallons of ice cream. I got some strange stares from passing consumers when they saw me pressing the 2 ice cream cartons against my cheeks to reduce swelling.
I want to know your experiences with wisdom teeth removal and some tips on how to deal with recovery. The constant bleeding is killing me! Apparently the cotton wedges aren't enough, so I'm constantly having to go to the bathroom to spit out large amounts of blood which is really disgusting me at the moment.

When I had mine removed they put me out, which seems far preferable to your experience O_O. All I remember is sitting in the dentist chair, then next thing I'm laying on my couch watching Oprah (wtf..), and my mom tellin me I was rockin out to We Will rock you on the way home.
The bleeding is super annoying, gotta have gauze in there forever... and eating kinda sucks for a good while.
|
i pulled my top wisdom separate from my bottoms. the top was very easy. simple extraction. bled maybe a couple of hours. didn't even need medication after.
bottom was different. needed them surgically removed, (couple of shots in the gums, was awake for the whole thing) had to cut the gums and everything. hurt for about a week. went back once for a followup. after that one week i was cool. dentist just gave me extra strength advil. Just takes time bro.

Pretty much sums up my experience. But apparently they had a little trouble waking me from the anesthetic (I was a light weight).

How do I swallow my vicodin pills with a mouthful of blood?
|
|
If you're bleeding so much that you can't swallow pills you might have a a more severe problem and should call your dentist.
|
I think its because my cotton gauzes got loose, should i replace them or will it bleed even more?
|
Replace them. I had to several times.
|
I was sedated when I had mine taken out since all of them were impacted. I remember passing out after they put the I.V in me and waking up I didn't even realize he had done them. I then got home and passed out for like 15 hours, good times. I didn't bleed too much so that wasnt a problem, but for some reason when I took Vicodin at that age it made seriously sick, gave me vertigo and horrible stomach pains so I ended up just using Tylenol for the week after it. All I remember that week is eating alot of sherbert and soup and playing video games when I wasn't passed out.
One thing that helped me was to rinse with salt water. Just get some warm tap water and mix in some salt and swish it around in your mouth. Isn't the best taste-wise but it will keep everything pretty clean in there.
And yeah, just replace the gauze. Will probably be bleeding for a couple days at least.
|
Try doing something to take your mind off the pain since if your brains is too busy dealing with sensory input from elsewhere it won't acknowledge the pain signals. Rinse your mouth regularly and maybe get some mouthwash, just in case of bacterial infection(?). It will sting, but it's a good precaution to take.
Maybe make some ice water (place a bowl of water in the freezer, let it semi-freeze until it's an ice slush) then soak some cotton wool in it so when you put it in your mouth it helps numb the pain. Using multiple containers would let you constantly have access to ice cold water. Keep replacing the cotton wool as necessary.
For taking pills, don't be afraid of swallowing blood. It's your blood after all. You won't catch any disease from it or anything.
Also, eat lots of ice cream. At the very least, it's an excuse to snack on foods before Azunyan arrives early to the club room one day and finds out you've been secretly sneaking food behind everyone's back.
And for no other reason than because I can, here's some images of the best K-On character.
+ Show Spoiler + It's ok, the pain is only temporary! D: I mentioned ice-cream right? Yes? Ok, good. Just be careful if you decide to make ramen. =( Or use your ojou powers to magically make cake!

about a year and a half ago i had mine taken out. my bottom right one wasnt numbed all the way and it hurt so bad, but i couldnt manage to say anything to the dentist during it. i didnt eat much the following days cause it was difficult :/ at least its over for you! feel better soon
|
Yeah I had myself but out, and therefore felt nothing for the whole thing. Naturally, I was pretty fucked up after I was taken home, but at least I didn't have to sit through the procedure.
The worst part by far is the soreness for the next week or two and the fact that you can do almost nothing that causes your heartrate to increase. I couldn't play SC for 2 weeks because it caused my mouth to bleed, so I had a bit of catching up to do later haha. Also, be sure to hydrate a lot, otherwise your gums will start to hurt a lot.
About the bleeding I would just use as much gauze as you need, its better to just deal with it rather than risk an infection or permanent damage from doing something else. Swallowing the pills is kinda tough but you just have to deal with it.
|
Yea... keep replacing them, you'd probably be bleeding for at least 2 hours, but if its up at 4 hours then you might need to call your dentist again.
I took one out earlier this year, and yeah, the crowbaring feels really strange, and then the pliers came and she just yanked it with force. Not exactly a delicate artwork, but simplicity is great
|
After 3ish~ hours most of the bleeding stopped and I can feel my tongue and most of my mouth, feel really really drowsy after taking vicodin, gunna go nap
|
I had all 4 of mine pulled at the same time, except they put me to sleep. I don't really remember much, except that it was sore for several weeks, with some intense swelling.
|
I am about to have my wisdom teeth removed and you seriously scared the crap out of me with the description.
Thankfully, ensuing posts described what I was hoping for. Sedation and not remembering a darn thing.
|
I thought the pain medication they had completely shuts down the pain receptors, thus resulting in the pressure receptors taking the primary role in detecting sensation. I should probably check my source again. Also, to anyone who's about to be sedated in this operation: watch out! Depending on the type of medicine they use, you could just be knocked out, or put in a state where you are incapable of forming memories. Whilst in this state, you can do some pretty embarassing shit. Best comparison I suppose would be a person drunk enough to not remember anything except having a wild time, except with this sedation you wouldn't remember even that. When I got this medicine, I asked the same question to the doctor every few seconds, and also almost fell face-first into a toilet after I pissed in it. Of course, from your perspective at least, the two different methods of sedation are functionally the same. Still, watch out (or have your parents watch out, since you really can't do it yourself) for any mishaps like falling face-first into a toilet full of your own piss.
|
Keep an empty glass next to your bed in case you wake up in the middle of the night with a mouth full of blood.
|
Wow, they did that without putting you under? I got mine done at an OMS (oral & maxillofacial surgeon). Go in, go under, go home with dissolvable bandages over the extraction site. Eventually they dissolve and you're good to go. I don't remember any extraneous bleeding, and hardly took any pain medication (don't get me wrong, it was uncomfortable (no solid food for like 4 days, chewing was a bitch), but not painful). Honestly I didn't even know general dentists were allowed to extract wisdom teeth unless they were already fully emerged.
|
For me, they put me to sleep, and then they let me sleep, and i woke up like an hour after the operation. I dont think it was that bad, but i was definitely not sharp after the operation

Technically they can I think, as long as they can just pull them out and they don't have to cut up your gums. That said, I had a bad experience with a dentist who wanted to extract a bad tooth. Fucker ended up breaking it and I have to go to a surgeon anyways. So yeah, If a dentist ever tells me he wants to extract one of my teeth I will say "no thanks" and just pay an oral surgeon ~_~

I got mine removed when I was 13 or so Three in total
During the procedure, I took a total of probably 8 anesthetic shots The dentist was so surprised at how quickly the numbess was wearing off, and had no choice but to keep giving me additional shots My cheeks swelled up, and the pain i felt for the 2 hours right after the operation was ridiculous. I don't think I've ever felt anything as bad as that. Sharp, aching pain, I began crying (I admit it).
For the next week or so, I had some really terrible breath. I was struggling to brush my teeth, and the blood in my mouth was giving my mouth a terrible odor. I struggled to eat, and usually ended up chewing food with my incisors (very inefficient)
|
Just had my bottom right one taken out about one and a half months ago. Its still kind of uncomfortable for me to eat on that side of my mouth. Also it feels extremely weird when i stick my tongue back and feel that part of my mouth.
|
I can't have my lower wisdom teeth removed without serious risk to nerves in my jaw - so they've stayed in place until or unless they decide to impact themselves. (They have, somehow, decided to lay sideways.) But I had my upper wisdom teeth removed (as well as one that was in danger of crumbling) and I have to say - I had the option of being knocked out, or staying awake while the maxillofacial surgeon did it. Given that I don't want to be awake while a guy shoves his hand into the back of my throat while standing on my chest, I paid a little bit more and got knocked the hell out. I don't remember the rest of that day. By the time I noticed reality again, I was taking percoset (the "sets" are pretty nice - perco, darva, etc) and the pain was managable. But I didn't eat much beyond soup for the next couple of days. Pain medications are good, and you want to be leery of any "solid" food for a week or so.
|
Oh boy, I remember having all four teeth removed in one feel swoop. It didn't hurt but the feeling of having a part of you levered out by force and the sound of it will always stay with me. I don't remember spitting out blood, though, after the cotton wedges it was healed up in a matter of days, no complications.
|
I got mine removed with local anesthesia only. However, the one of the teeth was firmly lodged and wouldn't come out. It took so long that the anesthesia they originally put in kind of wore out, then it started hurting like crazy. They tried to inject more anesthesia but it wasn't working really well for some reason. (my guess is that it just leaked out thru the cuts before having much effect, but i dont know for sure, im not an anesthesiologist.) After this, I just decided to bear it for the rest of the procedure. It was incredibly painful. The total time was about 2 1/2 hours for 2 teeth.( left top and bottom left,) after that, i was exausted. When i got home I didn't take any painkillers cause those are for pussys, so I just went to sleep. I survived on porridge, soup, and yogurt for the next few days.
|
Pfff, weakling.
I had two teeth pulled, then a hole drilled in my jaw and one of the pulled teeth put back in there. Sedation only being in my mouth so I got to enjoy the feeling (pressure, not pain thank goodness) and sounds of it.
|
Day 2: Most of the bleeding stopped, occasionally it leaks a little out though. Enjoying my yogurt+porridge, my cheeks aren't that bloated so I look relatively normal. Upset stomach though from taking 2 penicillin pills+vicodin every 6 hours.
@Thorakh Ouch, a hole drilled into your jaw that must've been nerve-wrecking. The pressure from the operation I can still feel it :\
|
It was. But the worst thing was the feeling of blood spattering everywhere :p But boy, was I glad that they surprised me with the operation. I thought we were going for a sort of take-in appointment. Well, I guessed wrong haha. I hugely preferred it this way though because I think I wouldn't have been able to sleep waiting for the day of the surgery to come.
The pressure is indeed very uncomfortable. I once had one of my molar teeth removed and my goodness, they couldn't get it out (it was huge). The pressure and the sounds.... They tugged on it for over five minutes. I still get shivers when I think about it.
And does anyone else always get that unbelievably bitter sedation? Sometimes I can still taste it weeks after... but that might just be my imagination.

Five minutes, not so bad. The dentists trying to remove my bottom wisdom tooth took over an hour. Imagine that.
|
I have no idea why you guys got all that bleeding. When my bottom 2 wisdom teeth were removed the dentist just stitched the hole so there was hardly any bleeding at all. The OP sounds like he ran out of the dentist practise before the operation was finished
|
I requested no stitches because it meant you had to come back another time to remove them I thought?
|
Wow, local anasthesia sounds terrible. I can't believe its even allowed. Luckily they put me out, and gave me fentanyl so I felt nothing. Then they gave me a prescription for percocet so I didn't really have any discomfort aside from the swelling. Modern medicine is great.

Don't be a sissy, I had all four removed like this at the same time and I wasn't given any painkillers. I bled on my pillow the whole night, we had to throw it away.
Chin up soldier!

Well, yeah, it's still allowed to be a real man.

The stiches aren't that bad. The removal was painless. Btw, my dentist told me to swallow the blood because spitting would cause it to bleed more, and the blood is nutritous too.
|
I strongly recommend being put under general anesthetic. I just had mine done and I was put under local. It numbs you and your tongue for a while but once they are removing it, the amount of pressure feels as if no anesthetic were issued. Horrible pain tugging on the tooth. HORRIBLE. So if you have a choice go for general. Being awake and seeing all sorts of tools enter your mouth isnt worth it. I was shaking from nervousness. You will bleed a while and make sure to ice yourself after the surgery.
|
|
I had two removed in the past months, in two separate sessions.
Both experiences where comfortable. Local anesthetic + like 10 minutes, anesthetic weres off in like 2 hours, not much pain at all.
With the first tooth I was actually afraid to eat something solid so just ate jogurt + mashed banana or curd.
The second time I pushed further and ate rice+meat normally at dinner time. Some of the rice pieces got into the hole, so I needed to removed them carefully not to damage the blood clot. Otherwise more bleeding or dry socket can occur.
The next days I used mostly a syringe with water + salt(actually I've used chlorhexidine instead) to wash the hole after eating.
Still these teeth where easy, growing normal but I still have one growing horizontally which may be more of an issue to extract.
|
I still got mine. They didn't excessively shift my teeth, but I fear they narrowed something down in my ear channels I think, that's still to see how it turns out though.

Honestly whether or not you need GA depends on how impacted they are to begin with. I got all 4 of mine pulled earlier this year and just got some local anesthetic injection (none of them were majorly impacted but the gums were starting to get inflamed), and all I could feel was a bit of pressure as he tugged at my teeth. The painful part was hours later after I got home and the anesthetic wore off, which is when the excruciating pain kicked in (for some reason I didn't get any special painkillers so I was stuck using OTC ibuprofen).
Another tip is to stick a tea bag on either side where the teeth were removed since it helps to clot the blood. It tastes pretty awful but you'll be glad when the blood stops gushing. Also don't drink anything with a straw for a few days since that suction can fuck with the blood clots.
|
Use mouthwash after brushing your teeth, that helps (but not longer than 2 weeks).
I had my wisdom teeth removed this year as well. It sucked, but I survived. One time I asked for extra numbing injections and I came to the conclusion that it doesn't really help.
As for eating, I only ate soft foods, ice creams and yogurt. If you have a blender, I suggest you use it for everything you eat, even soups. In my experience it really does help. I even used it to make meat into smaller pieces (couldn't survive without meat )
Try to drink less water during the first few days, I found out that it causes my mouth to bleed less. And don't forget your pain pills.
Kids, don't be afraid to go to the dentist. The earlier your problems get detected, the better. I admit, I was afraid of visiting a dentist, and now I regret it. There will definitely be less problems that way (you don't want to be a 20-something wearing braces, now do you?)

As I am writing, I am sitting in front of the Tv because I got all my four teeths removed wednesday. I just got a local anesthetic injection and it wasn't funny at all :-( they had to inject me in total 13 times because they stopped working. Furthermore, there were some complications with my bottom-right teeth, which took the dentist alone 1,5hours to solve. The first two days I could barely eat, now it is a little Bit better, but I am still taking painkillers.
|
recently got mine out as well and i have a dry socket from over swishing salt water so i recommend not doing that :/ Either than that use some heat after like 3 or 4 days to loosen up your jaw and stretch it a bit. Ice a lot and all will be swell for you
|
So many Horror Stories in here :D Actually i got one wisdom tooth removed and it wasnt a problem at all. I got a local injection and then they broke the tooth out of my jaw. took maybe 5-10 minutes and didnt hurt at all. I didnt even need painkillers after the removal and the swelling maybe lasted 2 days at most. So for me it wasnt a bad experience.
|
I got super wasted the night before and went to the dentist at eight in the morning with a hammerinf headache and sweating bullets for the suffering I was sure I would endure. Apart from getting nauseous from those huge needles it was a very painless and non traumatic experience. I guess I'm just pretty hardcore.

Woo, not the only one!
I'm keeping mine as well, even got a cavity that the tooth apparently was made with filled in. After reading the stories in this blog I'm happy with this decision.

hehe mine went very well. I was actually very lucky I feel. I got all 3 pulled (I only had 3). I was put to sleep and I only had to take 2 pain killers that day and never had to after that. I could barely eat cause it hurt to open my mouth to wide, but I felt almost normal the 2nd day (I had very little swelling) and that was nice. I couldn't eat solid food till the 3rd day iirc, but for me everything went nice and smooth thank god. I feel for you I was worried something bad would happen to me to cause complications or something xD.

Update: one week has passed since the removal and I am still taking painkillers because it still hurts like hell! Any in my opinion it didnt get any better the last few days. Sucks so much, because I have holidays now, but cant do much. Friday, i have another appointment with the dentist, removing the fibers. I Hope that After that the pain will stop. How Long did it hurt for you?

For me it only hurt 1 day. Damn sounds like you got it bad that blows T_T.

i had not problems with the removal, it didnt really impact me afterwards much.
But during the removal there was a time when the numbness somehow went away and i started feeling stuff, but luckily it was only local paralyzation, so i was able to point the doc towards his mistake and he injected more stuff.
It felt a bit strange, but nothing horrifying. Especially since you know what they are doing and that they did it thousands of times.

I know that this thread is old but here we go. The procedure itself was essentially painless, most of the injections to numb my mouth were only slightly uncomfortable. Two of the injections in the roof of my mouth stung a little but it wasn't a big deal really. After I had my wisdom teeth removed, the dentist gave me a prescription of codeine and told me I could also take ibuprofen at the same time if the codeine wasn't enough. I also took antibiotics.
Luckily, I never had any relevant amount of pain. I didn't touch the codeine and didn't even use any over the counter painkillers. I suppose the procedure went pretty smoothly. 2 of the wisdom teeth were impacted.
I remember however that for a few days, I had the "holes" at the back of my jaw and food would often lodge in them on one side. Those ended up closing up and now it's perfectly smooth back there.
I recall that when I was walking out though, my mouth was so numb I couldn't talk, and I could taste the blood. I had to talk (sort of) to the receptionist about paying for the procedure when a lady walked in with her kid. Hopefully I didn't have any bloody drool when the kid looked at my face but man was that timing terrible. I don't think he saw anything. Hopefully not, for his parent's sake... A little while later I was home, looked down for some reason and created a significant puddle of bloody drool on the ground. It was kind of amusing, although unsanitary
