Why hello there. I played BW LoTR games for 10+ years. I still play some inhouses occasionally . Wouldn't mind running into a sc2 lotr scene, except for the whole lack of custom maps thing :/

I was one of those BW players that shunned the wc3 lotr scene. I think rightfully so... the mechanics required and gameplay is not condusive to the wc3 unit style. Arb maps in BW weren't great either, but still better than wc3 lotr

ThatGuy89 probably wanted you to explain what BW LoTR is.

My friend's brother plays lotr helms deep RH every day on US east. There seem to be a number of ppl who still play that alot.
Why would I play sctoo when I can play BW?

I play BW casually and play Wc3, mostly custom games. I play 2nd Age, 4th Age, BFME, etc on Wc3, which are lotr related.

I was never much of a ladder person back in broodwar. Wasn't until SC2 came around that I finally started to get into the laddering aspect of things - build orders, improving macro/micro/map awareness/multitasking/etc...
So what did I do to kill the time in BW? Custom maps mainly. A large variety of them in fact. Defense maps, RPGs, Hero Wars, anything. But one map in particular shone brightly above the rest. That map which if spotted in the custom maps list I would join immediately. Subconsciously even. That one map that I could just never seem to get enough of...

LoTR SoG RH.

The sheer amount of time that I must have sank into this single custom map is incalculable. It became a part of by daily routine. But compared to many other maps, it was hard to find a game. Most days went like this: Log in to BW -> look at custom maps -> get disappointed that SoG isn't there -> try and host it -> remember that nobody could join my hosted games in BW ("game creators latency is too high") -> sit in a chat channel waiting for a freind to come online to host it.

In fact, that's probably one thing that I loved so much about SoG. Something that's missing from SC2. That community feeling. The fact that so often, I'd log into BW, only to be instantly greeted by a group of people saying 'JOLLY! Get the fuck in here! We need one more!". The fact that we could sit in a chat channel for an hour, just trying to get a game going, failing multiple times because we can't get enough people, but still having fun just hanging around in the chat channel. The fact that even if the game wasn't organised with friends, upon joining I'd still recognise the names of most of the players, just because the community was so small. I even keep in touch with a few of them today over facebook.

For a long time I've been hoping someone would remake it in SC2, but now that I think about it I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much, becuase the community feel isn't there in B.Net 2. Half the fun wasn't the even the map (even though the map was awesome :D), but just playing with people that were brought together by it.

I miss SoG...

Now that I think about it, LotR maps in WC3 were probably the first custom to get me into truly microing, which then led to my competence in SC2 ladder.

Kind of funny how you managed to get so many posts without every spelling out that LotR = lord of the rings, lol . Also, why do you keep capitalizing T in LotR? Just curious.

Played Helms Deep everyday for hours on bnet before sc2 came out. Really hate new custom game system, doesn't give a chance for games like Helm's Deep or HLD to be played

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that Helms Deep is really a lotr style map.

Kinda sorta loosely. Some basic tenets are there... Heroes don't res, you can't rebuild structures, and there are spawns every x minutes, specific hero maneuvers to accomplish x goal.

But on the whole they are very very different, SoG is a lot harder IMO. I was never good at LotRish

Edit and off topic: Best custom ever was temple siege C1F though :D

I never even seen anyone host LoTr on BW Bnet, but Wc3 lotr scene is pretty alive with a couple of clans on east and euro still making maps and playing.

Hey, thanks for all your posts! Lemme get some stories!
How did you guys get into LoTRish?
Ever have a win you are significantly proud of?
Also, ThatGuy, LoTRish is an interest custom map game mode.

Here is the idea. Every player gets a good amount of heroes based of Lord of the Rings, one or two, maybe sometimes THREE arbiters, and a bunch of bases which spawns minerals and units periodically. Together with these resources, most of which don't come back, one must defeat his opponent. In attempting to do this, one must be creative and perform certain maneuvers such as hero ops, elite rushes, and other tactics that abound in LoTR maps. I hope this helps .

Sounds like great fun, I was super confused there for a minute!

I remember playing BFME (Battle For Middle-Earth) and Helm's Deep in WC3. I didn't ladder at all.

The only downside was that many of those games weren't noob friendly AT ALL, and there was no other way to learn. The minute people realized that the one controlling the Fellowship was a noob, they would all leave.

I really loved the epicness of the battles. Like really really loved them. And heroes were sooo valuable and yet so squishy sometimes (especially some melee fighters who were prone to get stuck in front of other units).

Does SC2 have any similar mods?

I definitely played more than my fair share of Sauron's Deceit, Siege of Gondor, Peril of the Noldor, and Last Alliance. Later on, they started to lose popularity, and I joined the group making Kerrigan's Demise, which was also pretty fun, if extremely silly in late-game.

Come hang out in channel Pub on USEAST, we don't exclusively play LOTR but it's part of our broad scheme of custom maps (mostly dealing with historical warfare or historical diplomacy related maps - no not 7.7 diplomacy, actual diplomacy maps)

LOTR has always been popular on East though (especially Helms Deep games which are like always hosted and there's about a dozen unique versions of it). Battle for Osgiliath, Battle for Minas Tirith, LotR Last Alliance are all good too and there's probably several I can't remember off the top of my head.

By far my favorite would be LotR - March of Sauron.

Man, I can't remember the last time I was able to get a good game of Battle for Osgiliath going. 2-3 players would always have no idea what to do, but that scenario was just so much fun going into the late-game.
