If you haven't gathered, my local server is the SEA server, and quite honestly, it really is the least of all the servers. I log onto sc2 regularly, like most people here, and I always note the number of games in your region, and on average im always finding it to be 600~1000. So if we assume that all these games are 1v1's (which isnt true, but for the sake of argument we will) This would mean that 1,200~2,000 players are playing 1v1...But we know that this is VERY inaccurate. I am not sure if the game counter counts the custom games or not, but again, we will assume it does. So if we try to factor in 2v2's, 3v3's, 4v4's, FFA's and customs, we could probably say that 50% of the games are 1v1's. Which means that there are 600~1,000 players doing 1v1 ladders, spread out among the divisions. Most of these players would be Diamond and above, the ones that take sc2 a little more seriously than the rest.
Why do I bring this up? Because im stuck in Gold, and have been for a while now, the main problem is the 5-10 minute queue times, and when I do get a game, it is against some bronze player that has 6 games under their belt and it really isnt too much challenge sadly. The brings out the problem of actually getting better at the game. I mean, if im constantly going against bronze players that have not any clue what they are doing I cant get better, and when matchmaking actually places me against platinum or higher its a real struggle to do anything. Its like as if you were playing against bots, then go play experienced players for the first time.
Now, I know some people will say "Then play on the NA server, rofln00b" or something to that effect, but here lies yet another glaring issue. Lag. It is unavoidable and gimps your play from the first 3 seconds in. There is about 1.5 seconds worth of delay, and that makes it rather annoying to do anything.
So for actually playing 1v1's, its pretty damn horrible.
Now obviously there are people that are going to object to what im about to say, and probably have a valid point, but I cant think of any other real way of allowing those in the SEA server who actually want to get good at sc2 to do so.
A merger of the SEA server and the newly merged CN.TWN/KR server. Now I know a lot of people are going to be all , WELL HUURR LANGUAGE BARRIER DURRR... To which I have to say...you are only adding in a small audience that speaks english. Seriously. They just merged a Mandarin and Korean speaking server, and it isnt like these people dont know some english....It really wouldnt be that much of a big deal. I would rather sit in a silver league where queue times are 20 seconds than sit in high gold where queue times are anywhere from 5-10 minutes.
TL;DR version; SEA server has nearly no population and nearly no competitive aspect to it. NA server has too much lag to play well on. Proposing that the SEA server merge with the CN.TWN/KR server.

EDIT2:Ping time to the TW/KR server is 15-50ms on average.

This blog is interesting because it addresses the issue from a casual player perspective and without truckloads of rage, as is too often seen. Unfortunately, there isn't much I can say on the topic (we have 10 sec queue time at 2am in Europe...), but I sure hope your issue gets resolved in some reasonable way.

I understand your frustration. We have about 10 times that many games on the EU server atm - and for sure this is not the prime time now. The thing is, TL can't help you with that, you will have to post that on the SEA battle.net forums. Not sure if that really helps, but it might be worth a try.

You can buy a TWN/KR version on sc2sea http://www.sc2sea.com/cartplog.php
You might want to check your latency to the KR server for some people NA is better than even SEA, and for others KR is better it depends on your ISP.
BTW I agree with you that SEA should be merged with TWN since it makes more sense that way.

I had this problem too when I was laddering only on SEA 3 months ago. That's why I got a Korea/Taiwan account: no lag at all from here, latency even better than SEA itself, and I get a match in more or less 10 seconds. And I got really challenged in the Diamond below leagues which motivates me to improve: there are macro games and cheeses and early aggression and shennanigans. The real treat is in Masters above where the games are really worthwhile. It's only $40 on OffGamers (compared to $64 on sc2sea).
I doubt that Blizzard will merge KR/TW with SEA/ANZ. Let's hope for the best this 2012 or come Heart of the Swarm.

There is currently a thread on the forums questioning the population of the SEA server, and it wasnt made be me, and by the sound of things, the GM of the SEA server have 2 minute queue times, Diamond/Plat has 90 secs avg. Everyone else struggles to get games.
Good to know that im not the only one on the SEA server who is experiencing this.

Well im currently downloading blizzards "Free Sc2 for a week" thingy for the Taiwanese server so Ill use that to check the latency, although I have a 20Mbit down, so I think it will be fine, but you cant be too careful before throwing $40-60 away

well you are gold (stuck in). And you say competitive aspect?

I can beat plat and diamond players, sometimes masters, in 1v1, but my "official" ranking is gold yes. Competing against nobody in your division is quite a sad thing really. I could hit rank 1, stop laddering, come back at the end of the season, and still be rank 1. There is no "thrill of the chase". And besides that 80% of my games are against cannon rushing protoss, 2 proxy rax terrans or zergs that double extractor trick 12 pool and try to plant 2 spine crawlers in your base.

Sounds like a good idea - just be aware that on the KR server, you won't be in Gold league, probably high Bronze or Silver. If that's an issue for you of course...also the KR server is still cheesy.
You were complaining about lag to NA server, but if they merge you might get lag to KR server as well. The only server I have latency issues with is EU. The other servers are 100-200ms, which is to be expected in Australia.

Just play on NA, the lag is not that bad and maybe a bit worse than to the kr/tw server but the player population is huge and 5 min queues are uncommon at most times of the day.

I understand that Gold in SEA is basicly high bronze in KR and im ok with that.
As for cheese in KR, yes it still happense, but at least they dont immediately leave when you find their proxy pylon =\

Maybe its a bit worse in my case, primarily because i share my internet connection with 5 others, so international connection suffer. Because 1.5-3 seconds of delay (depends on who is downloading what) is a steep amount of delay.

No, don't merge with Taiwan please. Their Protoss's are numerous and cheesy little fucks. They can stay in their own corner please.

How strange that you lag on the NA server.
I ditched the SEA server and made masters on NA without any lag issue.
|
i really agree that there are so little pple playing starcraft 2 on SEA. like even teamgames, they take so long to search thesedays as compared to the days where sc2 just released. and for 1v1, you play the same pple over and over again. i really hope some merger can happen for SEA
|
It's even worse having a MMR at the high master/GM level. I regularly come up against the same player 4 games in a row. I wouldn't mind a merge, the player base is much too small on SEA. I ping ~200ms on the TW server, about ~70ms more than SEA. Would have to get used to the increased lag, which would wreak havoc on clutch FF placements.

I think op is being unreasonable about it in the first place.
I get 250 ping to na 350-400 to sea. Didnt stop me from getting masters on both two seasons ago. And when i do queue it only takes me 1 1/2 minutes to find a match.
The reason you're stuck in gold is the fact that a player who is still in gold season 5 is a casual who can't get better than the inactive mean, or because you started late last season...
NA is quite bearable ping imo, every other isp in the country should have better connection than me.
|
Pardon me if Im wrong but wouldnt someone in the SEA area have reasonable ping on the KR server? Obviously its a much more difficult server to play on but if your goal is to improve that seems the flat out best place to go.
|
^ Korean/Taiwan server should have okay ping, however Australian ISP sucks so...
US server is about the same sort of ping as Sea. I haven't noticed any difference when playing, At one point I forgot to change region while waiting for server reset and played next 30 of so games on SEA lol.
do what we all do? switch to US server for games :/
