Just posting to iron out some facts about merger and server locations.
NA and LA servers could merge because both of them were ran from the same server in NA. TW and KR servers could merge because both of them were ran from the same server in KR.
SEA server is ran in Singapore. Hence merging with another region is unlikely, that's why Blizzard gave SEA accounts access to NA.
edit: checking the IP address for cn.battle.net shows that the CN server is ran from Beijing, China.

Ahh, cool info. Makes sense once you know this.
Although I appreciate and can see where blizzard was coming from with the NA access for SEA players, but even so I think it would have been smarter to allow TW or KR access instead, just because of latency.
I tried the "starter edition" for the TW/KR server and it is instant, no delay at all. (19ms) NA has 250~ms

I play SEA and NA and unless things have changed a lot in the last month, I never had any trouble finding games on SEA. At worst I've run into the same people 2-3 times in a session, but that's no big thing at all. I didn't have any trouble finding games when I was gold either. Granted it was a little bit back, but I find it hard to believe its that barren now.
As for competitiveness I don't find NA harder whatsoever.

Unlike the amusingly idiotic post on the last page suggests, however, top SEA GMs are also GM in NA. The server difference isn't huge, hence most competitive SEA players play on KR.

I think MrBGJM you are being a sook. Game wait times are about a minute max 1v1 and ping isn't that bad. I don't think you would find Naniwa complaining that he can't get out of gold on Sea because of his ping and load times lol

This blog is interesting,it pin points one of the greatest problems involving localizing and money grubbing attitudes by Activision/Blizzard.But don't you get an AM key with your purchase of the SEA server?I know the ping is horrid but atleast its probably better than the TW/KR server!I know quite a few Aus. players that don't lag in NA.
|
Eh. I get the same amount of latency on both SEA and NA servers. I always assumed they just pulled a WoW and put the NA and the SEA servers in the same place.
|
For the Australians comparing ping to SEA and NA, your point is moot if you don't post which part of Australia your in, cause Western Aus has better ping to Singapore and Eastern Aus has better ping to NA.
It also depends on if your ISP is using the Perth-Singapore line or routing through Japan. I don't remember which ISPs do and don't but my friends across Aus (whom I used to raid with in WoW) have done the checks and comparisons before between SEA and NA servers.
edit: I would imagine if your ISP routes through Japan then your best ping would come from TW/KR server.

What would you know? You are from the UK. The standard connection in AUS will be at least 50/50Mbps, and the more expensive one 100/100. Sure, maybe no Korean speeds, but it is a huge upgrade from 20down/1up being a "high speed connection"

As for competitiveness I don't find NA harder whatsoever. I ran into the same player 5 times in a row a few days ago. It was sad because those 5 games where his placement matches.

Yes I get access to america, but for whatever reason, i get 250-300ms on the NA server, and i only have 19-40ms on the TW/KR server. The choice is obvious.

Im sure my ISP routes through japan. I have 250-300ms to NA and only 19-50ms to TW/KR. I think its damn obvious which one someone would choose.

No he wouldnt, because he would get placed in at least diamond in the SEA server, one of the reasons being the low pool of players.

I play on both NA and SEA. Honestly I get about 500ms if not less lag on the NA server nowhere near 1.5seconds. I am also in Gold and play infrequently but whenever I search I wait no longer than 2 mins and am always against Gold's or Platinum's. I don't know when you're trying to play, maybe your time online is just odd hours.
In relation to the lag, what sort of net do you have?
Edit: I live in Farn North Qld and my net max's out at like 8mbs on a good day

I dont think 5pm-9pm are odd hours for SEA server. I find it a stretch to think that im the only one who has 2-5 minute queue times or longer. Its cable internet with 20/1 speeds on a normal day. I live in sydney, and it seems that it might not be the best place for connection the NA, as I have 2 seconds of delay today.

Your ping is better than mine on all servers wtf
Are you sure you understand what 'laggy' is?
but if you are getting that ping just drop the whole 'sea is terrible' shit, change servers and move on. We don't need that cynicism in our scene.

Might be better off playing on Korea with delay like that :/

stop doing whatever it is you're doing and do some proper research

SEA server is located in Singapore, TW/KR server is hosted in Korea. My internet routes through Japan. The NA server is on the other freaking side of the world from Japan. Im sorry, whoever you are, but the latency doesnt lie, 250~300ms to NA 15-50ms to TW/KR. The same to SEA as TW/KR.
And thus the point of this entire ordeal...Why would I, play on the underpopulated SEA server, when I could just play on the Korean ladder, with no penalty? You would have to be steadfast stupid not to be able to conclude that.
