Hello.

My name is Jun and I am very sorry that I have caused such a disruption to the whole community for translating something that was not verbally right.

There might be a very few people who remember me from the last year when I brought translated interviews when there were not not many people doing. I have always loved e-sports and believed that e-sports will grow much better when non-Korean community and Korean community were communicated better for fans. I have stopped translating articles and interviews until a few days ago as I was busy finishing my degree. As soon as that was nearly over I started to post interviews, articles and maybe some other threads that may or may not been useful. I also lately commentated on Korean progamers stream in English so more people get to communicate with a Korean progamer.

I am writing all this because even if you do not see one thread from me acceptable, I hope that you could maybe see that I am genuinely an e-sports fan who only tried to help to as I have love for the industry that I had no intention of causing damage to the communities.

"코드S는 프로게이머한테 주는거지 아마추어 상금 사냥꾼한테 주는게 아니라고 안준데"

The above statement came from my friend who was watching GSL in Korea. At the time when this was said to me it seemed that many people were asking more about it apart from a former PlayXP's reporter Ethan_Ahn. To make things clearer (which it didn't) I decided to ask my friend what he said and I translated what he told me which was a very wrong thing to do. I apologize..

NHY also told me that there must be a translation problem or at least suggest that the translated could not be true. I reacted offensively to him by saying piss off as I was abused by a few people yesterday for translating Thisisgame's article about Naniwa as they believed I wrote the article. I assumed that NHY was one of those trolls who like to pick on other people's translation. I was very irrational and maybe I could have edited it or even try to find out more.

I am very sorry that I did not prevent this from happening when I had a chance. I know that saying sorry and all these writings won't help to bring pieces back together. I am also trying to get in touch with Mr.Chae to explain what I have caused in TL.

Once again I am very sorry about what I did and I will try to redeem myself by bringing articles and interviews fast from credible sources only.. I am deeply sorry about what happened. I hope this can be all sorted out soon.

Kind Regards,
Jun

It is alright, mistakes happen. But please let GOM and Mr. Chae know that some of the backlash was coming from a mistranslation so that they know some of us still support them.

Don't feel so bad, shit happens. I for one feel it's kinda funny. You'll just have to endure the backlash coming your way now, but you'll survive.

The ones that must be really angry are mods though. I mean, dealing with all that shitstorm... at least some of it would hav been prevented.

Don't worry, mistakes happen

Well, lesson learned i guess. But to be honest, you aren't the first and only one who has done this.

It was an honest mistake out of an effort to help the community. People should have asked for a source before going on a rampage. Still hopefully this is a lesson in verifying sources. Mistakes happen, as long as a lesson was learned its all cool.

Oh you translated the TIG article? Well that was a great job and provoked quite a discussion. Sorry to hear people actually trolled you about the translation.

I guess this was more a lapse in judgment as I can personally understand the desire of translating info and giving it out fast as possible. However seeing as the situation was akin to promethium on fire you should have taken more precautions. As long as you recognize what you did then it's fine, just don't translate second hand sources, always translate the source directly.

You did the translation as a favor to the community with good intentions, don't beat yourself too hard up over with it. Hope you will feel better soon, you do a great job, despite this mishap. (Love your work for SlayersMin, by the way)

I am sad that people overreact to everything, both for and against in equal measure. It should be more about progress to ensure the bad things don't happen and less about attaching blame, right now the proportions are all wrong.

I hope GOM will clear up the air with the forthcoming statement, only wish we would have had it in written form before it was mentioned on live television.

We all live and learn. Stay strong!

Yepp, some punishment is in order i think, thinking temp ban or something. If not else so that the community feel that justice is done in some way, and you will probably be treated better afterwards than if you didn't get anything. I'm just backseat moderating though, so don't mind me, sorry.

Anyways, I hope you come back and continue with translations after any punishment. Probably you will now be more careful than most other.

Also, while a mistranslation like this is really bad, you alone are not responsible for all the drama. The community members should be more careful, and request source and independent translations for this kind of scandalous messages. As it was, we all happily dived deep down in the drama without any hesitation. A big discussion was raised about the contradictory information about promise/not promise of the code-S spot, but as far as I know, none ever questioned the validity of your translation, which was only based on your word.

So we all got something to learn here: request independent sources! Be skeptical of scandalous information!

All the blame and other shit the OP is already getting is enough of a punishment itself. He still has guts to apologize for it and IMO, if he is going to directly apologize GOM for misinterpreting their message and "causing" some of this "unnecessary shitfest" is more than enough(with this apology) to ask for such mistake.

Banning is ridiculous and i'm sure he has understood that this is kind of a "warning" already. Next time its better to do things right, instead of trying to push the info out asap. People learn from mistakes.

Hi OP,

thank you for your efforts. Please note that in the title of this post, "incredible" is not the right word to use, what you mean is "noncredible".

Temp ban him for a mistake he made while trying to contribute to the community in a way that few of us can? I hope you never get to be a moderator O.o

Yeah, I see what you mean, and I agree that the OP probably won't repeat it even without official TL punishment. He also seems to be a very nice and humble guy, and a good contributor to the community otherwise. And again, thanks for your contributions as translator OP! It is also very nice of him to apologise the way he does. He seems to get more "dont worry, mistakes happen, np" than blame though, but that I'm very happy for! <3 forgicing TL. Maybe we were not looking in the same thread though and he got more shit in other threads, so many around... Anyways.

I was more thinking from a political standpoint if you understand what I mean. Like, teamliquid putting the foot down and saying that you are not allowed to start a thread putting very incriminating words in the words of GOMtv. Maybe they don't have to give a ban, but I would like TL to in some way officially say that this is not ok. That if you are going to post such an incriminating thing, you better be damn sure that your information is accurate. The OP knows that very well now, but I think TL should take the opportunity to let others know as well. Maybe they can give a "the user was warned for this post" and then put an official statement somewhere... I would be perfectly ok with TL sending a message to the community without harming the OP personally if they can do that. I dont know what the best way is, but just silence from TL is probably not a good idea imo. What do you think?

I'm sure they discuss this in the mod forum right now though, so we will see what conclusion they reach.

edit:
Actually, what they could do is to set up very clear rules for how a drama OP can look. For example, that FACTS should be clearly presented in an unbiased way with easy-to-follow sources so that people can check the information should they want to. Then the OPINION of the OP can follow, if he choses so, but then clearly separated from the facts. Any OP with the least incriminating information not following these guidelines give [severe consequence]. Then the OP could get away free, as the rule doesn't work retroactively, but they still send a strong message. As side-effect, the TL community will learn a bit about critical thinking. How does that sound?

I'm glad to see you admit to your mistake and apologizing. An incredible (haha me so funny -_-) number of TLers don't know how to do that.

I used to (and still sometimes) do voluntary translations for TL, for the sake of contributing to the community. Voluntary is the key word here - we don't get paid. We don't even get Christmas cards from the TL admins, how rude, right? Haha. We translate for the sake of, and for the benefit of, the TL community. Most of my past translation work has been SCBW (SPL) interview translations, but I've done major projects like Messages for Violet, which was well-received.

One day, a major incident broke out involving one of our prominent translators, Milkis. I'm not sure whether you know about the incident, but what came out of that for me was a huge disappointment towards the community. Past contributions vanished into the void, and he was trashed by almost the entire community.

That is why I've decided to focus my efforts on doing an actually paid translator job now (I work for Fomos, and translate articles for Fomos Global). Hey, if all goes to worst, I fall back on the last "reason for translation": cash. While that may sound disappointing to you and for other volunteers in the website, I felt like it was the right decision for me.

I'm glad more volunteer translators are contributing to the community. Mistakes will be made, but because there are many volunteers, it will be corrected (like in this case). Don't be let down by the repercussions, keep your spirits up and please continue to contribute - but yes, it's important to be credible and correct!

Thank you - you guys cheered me up. By the way, if mods want to temp ban me I would gladly accept it. But I will still translate articles and sent to mods so they can upload it.

Also I can't fix the typo in the title as you can't edit titles.

Meh, there's no reason for a ban here, I don't think... I mean maybe a warning at most, but it's not like you've translated 5000 articles and they were all wrong, or false info, etc.

You had one hiccup, and you're definitely more aware of your sources now, right? I mean the only reason for moderation would be to have you "learn your lesson" but it seems like you've already done that.

I think it was a honest mistake, and although his name disturbs me, should be forgiven cos it's obvious he wasn't trying to start some mischief. Honest mistake while trying to help the community. I for one have forgiven this and I hope you'll continue ur efforts into translating and casting etc (I believe there was a thread where u aired the idea). Don't lost heart Keep going!

Anyone mind telling me where the mistake was. I'm not sure how I missed this aspect of the fiasco, so it would be nice what part of the information I read was false.

By the way, Cryingpoo (Jun), i always love to see interviews of players, especially Korean ones. I always noticed the effort and speed at which you get things to us. So whatever it is, I'm sure it sucked to have happened, but we all make mistakes, and I think anyone saying you're not geniune is misinformed. Thanks agian!

Would also like to request what exactly the mistake was? And just to reiterate, translating something with the pure intention of providing information doesn't really seem like a huge offense. I guess just check what you're translating in future more? Keep up the great work though, people like you bring us the news from across the globe .

No problems buddy, stick to official first hand sources IMO. As far as I am concerned, no harm no foul. People will be mad at GOM with or without the statement you misconstrued.

TL admins banned this guy? People do make mistakes and he is clearly very remorseful of it. Some Nazi mods need the ban themselves imo if this is the case!

Hope you learn from your mistakes and look forward to great translations!
