I bought a Damascus Katana that was made in Japan a few months ago, and have been curious what the Certificate that came with it says. Sadly I can't copy/Paste from a sheet of paper, so it would be great if somebody who can translate Japanese would help me out.

Much thanks in advance

Most of it is just translating what the English says above it.

I can't read well enough to decently translate it though so I won't really attempt to do that.
How does it feel knowing you wasted another 3 seconds of your life reading this again?

No, it's the category (which is same as English) and then the actual value.

I could get most of it just from the Kanji but I'll leave it to people who speak Japanese.

Yea, I figured most of the technical things out (like length, 4500 carbon steel) but was mainly interested in the "Name of Sword" and craftsman.

The first thing I read on that was "Length" and then I looked up a bit and saw "Thickness" and briefly thought to myself "Well this is an odd birth certificate"

lol ._.

The name of the sword is "Patterned Steel Green Dragon Sword"

As for the craftsman, that is a Chinese name. I did a quick search on google and found some chinese site that deals with swords, and that particular page mentions how that one of the swords made by that craftsman was put into some museum in China.

The website itself is sketchy as hell though. No physical address.

Material: 4500 layers damascus steel (the number of layers has to do with how the sword is forged, more is better quality)
Handle: Pearl fishscale cotton cloth
Tsuba material: Steel
Name: Patterned Green Dragon Steel (approx. word by word translation)

The numbers on the right are in degrees.

FYI I don't read Japanese, most these words are in Chinese Traditional, could be mis-interpreted.

I asked my mom what it said, and we did a bit of google searching. We came to the conclusion that its probably not a Japanese made/sold sword. The kanji that is used in a few of the words aren't used in Japanese. For example, the Japanese kanji for authenticity would be 鑑定証. It seems like its written in Chinese, so we couldn't really read it in Japanese.

But there's hiragana... That means Japanese does it not?

And sorry. I can only read Hiragana/Katakana. I don't know enough Kanji to be any help :/

Yes, there is hiragana included, but the kanji is not Japanese. They might have included some hiragana so it looks like a Japanese product to a non-Japanese speaker. Some of it is readable in Japanese, but a decent amount of the words don't make sense or aren't used in Japanese.

「鑒」is an alternate way of writing「鑑」which I personally have never seen used before (actually needed to google it to find its meaning). So it actually says 鑑定書(かんていしょ)which is like a letter of appraisal.

But yea, I have a strong suspicion that the person who wrote this was Chinese as there are many discrepancies such as this (like using「劍」instead of「剣」) and the fact that what the blade material/sword name/handle material are isn't written in colloquial Japanese.

Most likely poorly translated Japanese from a Chinese source.
Thank God and gunrun.
