I've always been a sore loser. In fact, there have been countless times that I've gotten so frustrated over losing a game to a significant other that I run off and mope. With friends I'm generally more composed, but it doesn't change the frustrating and burning I feel in my chest.
It's silly. Beyond silly, actually. I don't cry during sad movies, I don't cry when people are harsh to me, I don't cry when I get hurt, but, by God, if I am about to win in a game of Smash Bros and you last second combo me out, the tears will start leaking.
I never considered this raging, it's more frustration than anything. I can be terribly prideful despite my enjoyment of making fun of myself in public forums. I picked up a "losing is not an option" mindset from my father (you can understand why, he's an utter badass: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=254775 ). However, it makes actually losing quite hard to deal with!
Still, the only anger I usually experienced was directed at myself. That is, until, I started playing ranked in League of Legends. I swear something about that game encourages raging. While this generally can be combated by having really nice and supportive teammates, there is almost always at least one asshole on your own team or on the enemy team. As soon as one person starts bitching at other or being excessively rude, I feel my temperature start to rise. Having a terrible player say completely bs and rude things for 30 minutes really makes me compelled to start breaking things.
While new experiences, good and bad, are generally opportunities to grow, I really wish I never had and never will against experience rage.
What about you guys? Have events occurring in games made you upset?

I rage when terrans play poorly in the GSL. In a similar vein, when my favourite sports team (or person) plays badly and loses.
|
I understand your pain with smash bros. I am a N64 smash player, me and my good friend used to play constantly, and since we got so good no one would want to play the 64 version of smash with us anymore hah. We moved apart but i sill play on an almost daily basis. I usually dont rage, and if i get frustrated i just do something else... but something about smash gets to me because sometimes dumb stuff happens.
Example - Playing Single player 64smash, 1 life, very hard, no continues.
I am on polygons, which are such a bitch to beat, i was link - who has a hard time getting back on the map to boot.
There i am, being super pro, owning up some polygons. I hit the last one, Yes! He flys into the air, im sitting at 150%. I am waiting for him to turn into a star so i can get the victory! He is falling in the back ground.
A Bomb-bomb spawns over my head, lands on me, explodes, i go flying left before i can even react, i am shot off the screen literally fractions of a second before that last poly disappears and i win. Defeat! NO! NOOO! sdfjkldsjlfks *throws controller*
I am just thankful my controller still works. kek. That is my most recent example of my losing it to a game, does not happen often. I typically dont get emotional, if i play my ass off against another player and somethings stupid happens im more angry at myself than anything, but it doesn't last. But oh man, losing that round against the polygons. Gawd.
|
Solo ranked queue? Yeah that makes me rage so hard. There's always some asshole who locks in Eve or Mundo when you need a support, then he ends up flaming and just generally being shit all game. Definitely makes me rage -_-
|
I never rage at HoN because I play casual mode for the lulz.
I rage a lot everywhere else. I get really unhappy when I get smoked in Age of Empires II

Playing League of Legends solo queue eventually turns any human being into a horrible twisted avatar of rage.

Don't you ever use /ignore? I raged for the first time in several years last night, when I played mid Veigar, and died a couple times to a roaming Twitch that my allies decided to feed 11 kills to, so that he could 3-shot me. They then proceeded to spend 5 minutes calling me terrible and bad before I just /ignore all'ed.
Soooooooo useful. :p

what i want you to do is set up a video camera and get an xbox and mw3 and some popcorn.
then turn into ultra rage mode and rage at every cod fanboy on xbl. record yourself do this
then later turn on the video and laugh at yourself raging while enjoying some popcorn :D boom raging cured
obv this should only be attempted if you can laugh at yourself

Madden/NBA Jam/NFL Blitz/NHL Hitz rubberband AI. Fuck that shit.
I think that's the only time I've thrown a controller.
|
I am pretty competitive in everything I do (school, video games, sports), so naturally there are times when I rage significantly. The worst game I would say is FIFA 10/11/12. Never has a game made me throw my controller as hard as FIFA. Not only does losing suck, but it literally feels like the game hates you (the opponent makes shots that seem impossible, the refs call things that they ignore for the opposing team, etc). I broke a headset and controller because of FIFA, but I don't regret playing it. Another one that comes to mind is NFS: Most Wanted. The stupid rubber band AI shit pissed the hell out of me. Especially when getting to the top 3 out of 15, they caught up so quickly that making one mistake in the last lap cost you the entire race. Also collecting bounty was a bitch, even using the cheap way (which isn't really cheap because its almost impossible any other way) took hours. Fuck that game.
Also halo 3. Trying to get to rank 50 in team slayer without a real team was almost impossible, especially once derankers started becoming more frequent.

Sore loser is the correct term. Don't try to twist it into something positive or inspirational like 'losing is not an option.' All it means is that you can't appreciate and respect your opponents and that you think too highly of yourself.
It's not always the case, but I usually find people who are okay with losing have the most capacity to learn from their mistakes and become truly skillful. People who are not okay with losing tend to learn much slower.
I have had games which were very intense and emotionally charged, but that is exactly it. It's just exciting. I don't get mad at my opponent or at myself because of the game. The only time I feel frustration from playing a game is if I was already frustrated before playing, went to play the game to try and relax/take my mind off it, and instead just played horrible and felt shitty the whole game thus wasting time. But that really has nothing to do with the game.
|
I never really get all that mad during games. When I grew up I mostly played games alone or with my dad and neither he nor I cared all that much but we played a lot. It surprised me when I made it to college and most of the people I played games with were prone to rage during games. But now that I've played games more socially I think it's pretty common that people rage while they play games. Especially girls. Lol (I haven't met all that many gamer girls though, so I'm sure some can handle their emotions) I remember there's this girl from my school who's like the "league of legends girl" and I thought that was cute so my friend and I decided to play a couple rounds with her. I briefed her on how my friend wasn't that good because it was like only his 30th game of League of Legends (as opposed to her ~900th). We had a long conversation about being nice and treating the game like a game and not a lifestyle. She seemed pretty composed until about 20 minutes into the game. My friend at the time was under the impression that katarina was designed as a character who killsteals other characters, so he had been killstealing her the whole game. I had no idea lol. I was playing blitzcrank and there was a point in the game where the whole team was chasing after someone, and the passive on blitzcrank's ult (the lightning bolt) shot down and killed the person. She literally bitched at us over skype for the next 15 minutes. Lol. I was speechless. Never played a game with her again. I really do recommend learning to play with such an attitude that allows you to lose with grace. I think it makes playing the game that much more fun when you can enjoy winning and losing. I think it's much more difficult in a game like LoL than it is in a game like Sc2.

Normally, if I start to rage I'm kind of half-joking or if I do something silly (slam desk, throw something, ect.) I laugh at it immediately after. I don't really understand the point of legitimately getting mad while playing a video game on a non-pro level. You're supposed to be having fun. Being competitive isn't really an excuse because if someone was truly competitive, then they'd know that raging doesn't help at all.

There's a difference between being a sore loser and being competitive. In sports, you can drop the ball or miss someone, but it's the things that nobody will blame you for which makes you lose. Not putting in that extra effort in a run, or not covering your guy tightly because you're tired, having your feet in the wrong position.
If you're competitive at games, you should be beating yourself up over missing larva injects or not last hitting a creep perfectly, or losing a track of an enemy hero while you're csing.

In Melee I played Marth and Mewtwo. I was pretty decent back when I played a lot.
In Brawl, I can drunkenly mash at a controller while playing Lucario and never die. Brawl is fun, but they made it way too easy to recover.

1) As always, I exaggerated.
2) My father literally says things like "losing is not an option" and "there is doing and not doing, there is no 'try.'" I wasn't trying to be inspirational.
3) I really only get noticeably frustrated when I make a fool of myself in front of my boyfriend. Not sure why, because I can just royally suck in front of my friends and shrug it off.

I stopped playing SC2 because I raged too much. I went through a period where I was high diamond as a result of of playing like 9 hours a day (before there was masters league). I felt burned out, so I gave playing for fun a try and I still raged at how trash I was. It got to the point where I was punching things. SC2 is the only game to ever require me to sit up straight and devote all my mental energy. When I played competitive TF2, CS, Quake, etc. I was able to chill, lean back, and do relatively well. It probably has to do with playing FPS for almost my entire life, so my FPS mechanics are very solid and natural.
I only rage at my own mistakes though and I knew I wasn't playing at high enough level for race balance to matter so I never raged about balance. I have friends who rage at LoL/Dota if they have bad teammates, but if I'm in a situation like that, I take comfort in thinking that I'm not as bad as my teammates are. I feel horrible when I play like trash in front of my teammates though.
My little brother rages hard at Gears of War 3 though, I should set up a hidden camera. :D
|
I rage when a Riku blog has no photos.
I don't rage much at SC2, never raged much in Dota (mostly just utterly sad and frustrated, since there comes a point after your 25th death that you just realise there's no point to, well, anything).
I rage like f**k on a golf course, though. If I was rich I'd probably be smashing half of my clubs every round in anger.

Why is playing a game on a non pro level a reason not to get upset? Just because something isn't being played on a pro level, doesn't mean it can't be a serious competition. If anything, playing at a pro level should mean you try to control your emotion, because you are playing for money. Also, winning is a lot of fun.

My experience in athletics is the exact opposite. People that take losses devastatingly hard seem to work the hardest to prevent them from happening again. That is of course unless they just quit all together, but then they won't be continuing to learn at any rate so I assume that 2nd scenario should be tossed out.
Side note: taking a loss hard does not have to equal tears and depression.

because when you're playing on a non-pro level, it doesn't mean anything. winning is fun and being competitive (while not being pro) is fun, but when people take the losses so seriously and deeply, it sucks out the fun of competition and if you're playing a team game, it usually annoys other people as well. they're making a big deal out of something that means nothing.
Just to clarify, I'm talking about legitimate and lengthy rage fits, not short outburst.

We rarely bet when we played, but we did lots of Smash Bros drinking games. Only for Melee and Brawl, though, 64 was srs bsnss.
I actually own my own gamecube controller, though not a gamecube. The controllers most people owned tended to be messed up, so I would always bring my own over with me to play with.

Silly as it is, all my mopey SC moments come the feeling of disappointing others. I had a really good friend who was coaching me for weeks in preparation of a small local tournament, and I ended up performing terribly during my first game. I guess his comments were pretty harsh, I literally curled up in a corner on my bed after the game and cried. [Haha I really hope he doesn't see this post] The idea our friendship based on my skill at a game was unbearable. Good thing that's complete BS, considering we're dating and I still suck massively at SC. But yeah, I do rage at myself for being bad, but what really breaks me down is when I can't fulfill others' expectations. Can't imagine how pros deal with it. @____@

Also, winning is a lot of fun. because when you're playing on a non-pro level, it doesn't mean anything. winning is fun and being competitive (while not being pro) is fun, but when people take the losses so seriously and deeply, it sucks out the fun of competition and if you're playing a team game, it usually annoys other people as well. they're making a big deal out of something that means nothing. Just to clarify, I'm talking about legitimate and lengthy rage fits, not short outburst.
I guess we just have different definitions of what being upset means. I think of it as playing video games is something I invest my time into, while winning may be just as much a waste of time as losing, I definitely have a lot more fun when I'm winning. Its not a legitimate reason to ever get angry to the point where you make other people feel like shit because of it, but I don't see much wrong in being upset at yourself (especially in SC2 where I know what mistakes I made).

if LoL makes you rage, then dota or hon will make you hate yourself... the level of flame is huge. If you are being ganked heavily, you will be behind throughout the whole game and your team will flame you non-stop

All my nice friend turn to stupid asshole after they play League of legend

Okay someday there has to be a TL SSB64 tourney. I seriously have an unquenchable desire right now to deliver some sweet Link down-A justice onto iGrok's DK.
Also, Riku did you ever play against your bro or sis if you have one? Losing to your sibling is the pinnacle of rage-inducing.

Hm, there are some games that make me rage a little bit. The most recent example would be Driver: San fran, whenever I have to drive a truck and navigate it with a time limit. The controls on the truck are wieldy and awkward, so it's really stressful.
An older example would be a Naruto game for the PS2, that had a fault with it (I think it was an universal fault, considering I had the disc switched twice) where the game would randomly crash during loading and save screens. This lead to me having to do the same content over and over and over and over and over and over. And then it crashed again.
Basically any game with bad controls or poor camera (this mostly applies to 3D games, especially the Nintendo 64 ones that were the first of their time) are enough to piss me off.
Oh, and getting that stupid artifact or whatever it's called for Lulu in FF10, where you have to dodge 100 GODDAMNED LIGHTNING BOLTS (this involves sitting there like a retard and pressing "X" when the screen flashes. Over and over) is enough to get me to throw my controller at the screen.
On the topic of FF10, FUCKING BLITZBALL. It's DULL, BORING, and REQUIRED to get Wakka's asshole spiked volley ball of shit or whatever. I sat for HOURS playing that.
AND SPEAKING OF FF10, that goddamned Tidus artifact where you had to do a chocobo race and get a 0 second record. BULL. SHIT. Took me HOURS of that goddamned minigame, with that goddamned music, and those goddamned birds shitting in your face.
But yeah, in general I don't rage much at games.

If this ever happens with the 64 smash, i would be soooooooo happy. Then when i win without trying very hard ill be a sad panda D: ;P But srsly, someone who knows how to program needs to like... make the Smash emulator on project 64 have online play. Could you imagine it? Online multiplayer super smash.
Id pay for that. And then we could have this tourney :D In my dreams at least.
ps- i am in the portland Oregon area, if anyone out there wants to get down on some super smash 64 and is in the area, and your not crazy.. lol
