I've always been a sore loser. In fact, there have been countless times that I've gotten so frustrated over losing a game to a significant other that I run off and mope. With friends I'm generally more composed, but it doesn't change the frustrating and burning I feel in my chest.
It's silly. Beyond silly, actually. I don't cry during sad movies, I don't cry when people are harsh to me, I don't cry when I get hurt, but, by God, if I am about to win in a game of Smash Bros and you last second combo me out, the tears will start leaking.
I never considered this raging, it's more frustration than anything. I can be terribly prideful despite my enjoyment of making fun of myself in public forums. I picked up a "losing is not an option" mindset from my father (you can understand why, he's an utter badass: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=254775 ). However, it makes actually losing quite hard to deal with!
Still, the only anger I usually experienced was directed at myself. That is, until, I started playing ranked in League of Legends. I swear something about that game encourages raging. While this generally can be combated by having really nice and supportive teammates, there is almost always at least one asshole on your own team or on the enemy team. As soon as one person starts bitching at other or being excessively rude, I feel my temperature start to rise. Having a terrible player say completely bs and rude things for 30 minutes really makes me compelled to start breaking things.
While new experiences, good and bad, are generally opportunities to grow, I really wish I never had and never will against experience rage.
What about you guys? Have events occurring in games made you upset?

I rage when terrans play poorly in the GSL. In a similar vein, when my favourite sports team (or person) plays badly and loses.

I understand your pain with smash bros. I am a N64 smash player, me and my good friend used to play constantly, and since we got so good no one would want to play the 64 version of smash with us anymore hah. We moved apart but i sill play on an almost daily basis. I usually dont rage, and if i get frustrated i just do something else... but something about smash gets to me because sometimes dumb stuff happens.
Example - Playing Single player 64smash, 1 life, very hard, no continues.
I am on polygons, which are such a bitch to beat, i was link - who has a hard time getting back on the map to boot.
There i am, being super pro, owning up some polygons. I hit the last one, Yes! He flys into the air, im sitting at 150%. I am waiting for him to turn into a star so i can get the victory! He is falling in the back ground.
A Bomb-bomb spawns over my head, lands on me, explodes, i go flying left before i can even react, i am shot off the screen literally fractions of a second before that last poly disappears and i win. Defeat! NO! NOOO! sdfjkldsjlfks *throws controller*
I am just thankful my controller still works. kek. That is my most recent example of my losing it to a game, does not happen often. I typically dont get emotional, if i play my ass off against another player and somethings stupid happens im more angry at myself than anything, but it doesn't last. But oh man, losing that round against the polygons. Gawd.

Solo ranked queue? Yeah that makes me rage so hard. There's always some asshole who locks in Eve or Mundo when you need a support, then he ends up flaming and just generally being shit all game. Definitely makes me rage -_-

I never rage at HoN because I play casual mode for the lulz.
I rage a lot everywhere else. I get really unhappy when I get smoked in Age of Empires II

Melee or Brawl, if Melee, what character, and were you good?
If Brawl, ignore my question lol

Playing League of Legends solo queue eventually turns any human being into a horrible twisted avatar of rage.

Don't you ever use /ignore? I raged for the first time in several years last night, when I played mid Veigar, and died a couple times to a roaming Twitch that my allies decided to feed 11 kills to, so that he could 3-shot me. They then proceeded to spend 5 minutes calling me terrible and bad before I just /ignore all'ed.
Soooooooo useful. :p

Madden/NBA Jam/NFL Blitz/NHL Hitz rubberband AI. Fuck that shit.
I think that's the only time I've thrown a controller.

I am pretty competitive in everything I do (school, video games, sports), so naturally there are times when I rage significantly. The worst game I would say is FIFA 10/11/12. Never has a game made me throw my controller as hard as FIFA. Not only does losing suck, but it literally feels like the game hates you (the opponent makes shots that seem impossible, the refs call things that they ignore for the opposing team, etc). I broke a headset and controller because of FIFA, but I don't regret playing it. Another one that comes to mind is NFS: Most Wanted. The stupid rubber band AI shit pissed the hell out of me. Especially when getting to the top 3 out of 15, they caught up so quickly that making one mistake in the last lap cost you the entire race. Also collecting bounty was a bitch, even using the cheap way (which isn't really cheap because its almost impossible any other way) took hours. Fuck that game.
Also halo 3. Trying to get to rank 50 in team slayer without a real team was almost impossible, especially once derankers started becoming more frequent.

Sore loser is the correct term. Don't try to twist it into something positive or inspirational like 'losing is not an option.' All it means is that you can't appreciate and respect your opponents and that you think too highly of yourself.
It's not always the case, but I usually find people who are okay with losing have the most capacity to learn from their mistakes and become truly skillful. People who are not okay with losing tend to learn much slower.
I have had games which were very intense and emotionally charged, but that is exactly it. It's just exciting. I don't get mad at my opponent or at myself because of the game. The only time I feel frustration from playing a game is if I was already frustrated before playing, went to play the game to try and relax/take my mind off it, and instead just played horrible and felt shitty the whole game thus wasting time. But that really has nothing to do with the game.
|
I never really get all that mad during games. When I grew up I mostly played games alone or with my dad and neither he nor I cared all that much but we played a lot. It surprised me when I made it to college and most of the people I played games with were prone to rage during games. But now that I've played games more socially I think it's pretty common that people rage while they play games. Especially girls. Lol (I haven't met all that many gamer girls though, so I'm sure some can handle their emotions) I remember there's this girl from my school who's like the "league of legends girl" and I thought that was cute so my friend and I decided to play a couple rounds with her. I briefed her on how my friend wasn't that good because it was like only his 30th game of League of Legends (as opposed to her ~900th). We had a long conversation about being nice and treating the game like a game and not a lifestyle. She seemed pretty composed until about 20 minutes into the game. My friend at the time was under the impression that katarina was designed as a character who killsteals other characters, so he had been killstealing her the whole game. I had no idea lol. I was playing blitzcrank and there was a point in the game where the whole team was chasing after someone, and the passive on blitzcrank's ult (the lightning bolt) shot down and killed the person. She literally bitched at us over skype for the next 15 minutes. Lol. I was speechless. Never played a game with her again. I really do recommend learning to play with such an attitude that allows you to lose with grace. I think it makes playing the game that much more fun when you can enjoy winning and losing. I think it's much more difficult in a game like LoL than it is in a game like Sc2.

Anyone remember Pikachu's OPness in the original SSB? Rofl.

Normally, if I start to rage I'm kind of half-joking or if I do something silly (slam desk, throw something, ect.) I laugh at it immediately after. I don't really understand the point of legitimately getting mad while playing a video game on a non-pro level. You're supposed to be having fun. Being competitive isn't really an excuse because if someone was truly competitive, then they'd know that raging doesn't help at all.

That was such an awesome game. Better than Brawl IMO.
