first rant: the usage of the term 'bonjwa'
second rant: commentators using the phrase 'ace match' to denote the final set of every series.
pretext: the term/concept of an 'ace match' was introduced by kespa in 2005 as part of the new proleague broadcasted by both ogn and mbcgame. in order to make the best of 5 more interesting, for the fifth game (if needed to be played), teams were allowed to re-use any player on their game day roster to play in the now called ace match. unsurprisingly, this would see top players of each team be used, resulting in most of the time, a high-level match to end the day.
edit: ace match was also referred to as the 'closer', although i would have no personal qualms if a commentator used 'closer' in its stead.
my gripe here is this, why the fuck are commentators suddenly using the term to denote the final set of an individual league's series as an ace match when it has nothing to do with the original concept at all? it grossly frustrates me how over-used this term is becoming out of the wrong context.
just like the term 'bonjwa', keep it where it is supposed to belong, and don't misuse it.
in team leagues where the final set is determined by a blind picking of a player from the two opposing teams (so yes, the last set of the all-kill format is NOT an ace match) on a pre-determined map to see who will win the match for the day.
thank you.

Kinda annoyed me but I didn't see it being used to an extent that it got me pissed off.

You know I dislike about 95% of the commentators to this day holy crap they annoy me -_- so I feel your pain there. Extreme over-hype with a lot of words / players I know they're trying to do their job by bringing excitement but come on you can definitely be more creative -__-;;

lol Plexa :D
I'll agree with the gripe though, as I'm noticing more and more casters using the term outside of blind pick.

right here with you brother
husky i hate you for starting this trend

Someone should give this guy a hug. Someone fast enough to dodge the bowie knife.

It bugs me more that commentators use the future tense ("It looks like the bunker will go down") all the time just because it's the thing to do.
|
You have done the world justice.
|
I think they're more insinuating the tennis useage of the word "ace" and not the proleauge BW usage of it.
in that case it would be completly correct just fing annoying.

I agree man,its kinda annoying to me and confusing to the new guys.

I really don't care when they use it as the last set for winners league. Makes me mad when they use it in 1v1 Bo3 or Bo5. wtf
|
I want the Proleague format in SC2. Please GOM... wanna see more diversified player pools.
|
Agreed, this bothers me in the back of my head whenever I hear it. It's just one more way I filter out the really solid casters from the gimmicky ones.

GTR generally you are correct about these things but referring to the last game in a series with sports has been called an Ace Match. Granted it is mostly for team sports but... what televised sports weren't a team game where a series was required.
No caster is using this term incorrectly when both players have 2 wins and its a bo5. The 5th game is indeed... the ace match. Any series can come down to one. If however it is a bo1 and somebody calls that an ace match then they are wrong in using the term. This term did not start with Kespa.

This. Are BW terms sacred now?

Well, it bugs me because it's so different from how it was treated in bwl.

i've never, ever heard/seen commentators and/or sports writers use the term 'ace match' ever. if you can link me to some articles/videos of them using the term, it would be appreciated.

Totally agree. 5/5 Anyway, I think foreign casters are pretty bad in general, they all look like acting rather than being naturally moved by the game. For example, compare their forced GG at the end the game with Korean casters' GG.
edit :

what ?! I thought it was called ace match because teams would send their ace player to play a second game. Why would you call the last game of a series with the same players an ace match ?

Well, I think the tiebreaker sets for badminton (3rd and 5th in a Bo3 and Bo5 respectively) are called ace sets.

That sort of annoys me too. I've even heard it used in the GSL at times for normal Code S/A matches

let me rant a bit as well: you're a pedant. why are you making such a big fuss over nothing? words change over time; that is the beauty of langage. id like to point out that "qualm" was previously a general term for illness that causes nausea, i really hate how people are using it to describe feelins because that wasnt its intended original meaning. i really like the old meaning more because its old and therefore the best.
see how much of an idiot that makes me sound like? meanings change, get over it.

I really don't agree that words changing over time is necessarily good. The word that annoys me is 'bail' in skateboarding which is when you kick the board away from you when you're scared or not gonna make something so it doesn't injure you when you land. However probably thanks to Tony Hawks (the games not the guy) and morons the word seems to be used for any kind of fall or when something goes wrong which is just not right at all. I kind of except that in generally language evolve and words take new meanings. But in this case it’s really irritating because everyone uses the word all the time having no idea what it actually means. Does this mean that I and all the other actual old generation skateboarders are now wrong because the majority of the population and new skateboarders have no idea what the word actually means? It’s ridiculous.
GTR I emphasize entirely with the anger you feel.
edit:my spelling is getting so bad

Final match in a bo7 could be denoted as an ace match if you assume teams are sending out players of lower caliber first and the final boss last.
This is the same assumption that a team will send their best player in a bo5 (ie: jd/flash instead of killer/violet).

This is the same assumption that a team will send their best player in a bo5 (ie: jd/flash instead of killer/violet). Not sure I agree. In the true ace match the teams can choose from all their team who they think is the most likely to win the match. So we normally get the best player except for decisions based on sniping or on the map.
In winners league it’s quite normal for teams to not send their best player out last. Quite often they send them out first to see how far thought the opposition the bets player can get and then they have the rest of their squad to choose from to finish of the other team (backfired for OZ when they sent out Jaedong first against KT and he lost to violet in the first match). So when choosing their last player for the final match they don't necessarily have their best players left and by the same token the best player of the other team might have already played won a couple and then lost.
edit:spelling again.

see how much of an idiot that makes me sound like? meanings change, get over it. It's called ranting yo. People can make a fuss with anything that they choose. It's a little rude to shut down someone just because you don't agree with them.

It was a little funny when GSL listed teams 'closer' and 'ace' during the GSTL.

I don`t rant about this, but GTR is right though.

see how much of an idiot that makes me sound like? meanings change, get over it. I think you're extremely potato and the stance you've taken is happily glocked. Words have fundamentals and suddenly racketeering them flusters the language and makes you harness finicky connotations. For juxtable, 'push' has a very stupendous connotation, referring to the action of tanks slowly muling across a flying buttress, in a gradual constantinople. Unfortunately, the landing has been watered down, and now horrendously refers to any attack, regardless of its ferociousness. In essence, we have lost a foundry of that tactic and it is no longer a useful landing.

One day they will realize that the colossus is a shitty unit and they will call it reaver to make it look better.
That will be GTR's rant #3.

Hmm, well I think the term push is really not such a stretch from what it is used for in other games. CS, Dota, and various MMO's ect use this term pretty generously. So it doesn't really seem so out of context for me, basically a generalization for the idea for attacking with a strong force into hostile territory or making an advance out of a friendly area with something not considered a scouting tactic.
On the bright side for you I guess, most casters don't say things like "push mid" ala Painuser. Something like that actually makes a lot less sense to me, as you never here someone say in a recap or during a 2v2, "shit there's 3 dts coming mid".
As for ace match, it's a slightly harder to rationalize, but since ace generally refers to your best player or last chance in context, I don't really think it's off the wall.
I would however ask for curiosity's sake, are these terms "ace" and "push" something that the viewers denoted as the correct terms for said circumstances, or was this the direct translation from the korean and foreign pro's/casters?
I think the answer to that question gives you a little more to argue with, if there's really something to argue about.

GTR, watching starcraft2 streams must really piss you off And I have to agree with both of your blogs, though I haven't seen or noticed any streamer yet that said "bonjwa" but I don't watch that much, maybe it happens quite frequently and if it does I'm happy I've missed it.

Either this is something thats totally flown by me or this must be an SC2 thing...
