Hey guys, making this blog to ask advice about how to handle acne. This is not for me as I have grown out of acne, but rather for my cousin. He has pretty bad acne and always asks me for advice. I just tell him to use BP (Benzoyl Peroxide), but he says it is too drying for him. My knowledge on acne is limited and I was hoping fellow TLERS could help me out!
-thanks

Changing pillow cases every night helps a lot.

If he has a problem with his skin getting dried out from acne treatments, tell him to buy a little bottle of Vitamin E and rub it on his skin with a cotton ball after he showers.

Sometimes it's really hormonal though and you just have to wait it out.

Sleep with a clean towel on your pillow at night and shower daily along with acne medication.

accutane solves, but can be potentially dangerous. it is also full of side effects, worst for me was bone pain in my back. if it is truly bad acne (scaring), then definitely do that.

I heard about Accutane. Yes, it is a miracle drug in the sense that it can get rid of all your acne, but...Doesn't it have really bad sideffects? I asked my cousin about it just now on MSN and he said that it can potentially make acne more prone to scarring.

Don't take Accutane.

I've had pretty sensitive skin all my life, and I find my skin is best when I drink lots of water + get sunlight/ fresh air open ( Keeping my window open when I play video games doesn't count).

Working out helps too. However you need to watchout with this. I've had people report bacne if they were doing something like intense situps on their dirty carpet and things of that nature.

Stress levels and diet also come into play. For me atleast, stress leads to worse skin.

Proactiv is quite expensive but you cant deny that it is a really good solution. (http://www.proactiv.com). Using it myself since a few months and can really recommend it.

i can only speak from my experience, but the only scarring i had after my course of accutane was where the acne was prior to taking accutane. so it didnt introduce anything.

my guess would be that not having accutane would cause more scarring, since it is the acne which leaves the scars. and accutane will certainly destroy all your acne (for life).

the side effects are bad but certainly manageable, and you could have close to none. if you do have a lot and you want to stop you can. but the benefits from having clear skin (easier to get a job, get laid, etc) are certainly worth it.

After two long periods on prescription accutane, I can safely say that your results are not the same for everyone, at least not for. My acne returned to its initial severity after both periods. There is NO guarantee that accutane will "cure" your acne. As for side effects, my joints ached and it hurt to run for an extended period of time.

acne is caused by food, stress, and other inflammatory factors. tell him to experiment with cutting out food groups that may disagree with him, the most common ones being sugar/grains/dairy. also getting sunlight, good sleep, etc will help, as mentioned above

edit: personally i have had some acne for all my teenage/young adult years, not severe but definitely annoying. it cleared up after i started eating a lot cleaner, and would come back occasionally if i binged into unhealthy stuff again. i would never resort to drugs, specially ones with potential side effects. Imo using acutane or w/e doesnt solve anything, it just masks the outward symptoms of the problem

PLEASE do NOT take medical advice from TL

Go to see a doctor, acne can be bacterial and can be treated by antibiotics, but your doctor will know what is best.

As for people talking about accutane, you cant use your experience with/without side effects to base any argument at all. The drug does work, and any doctor that prescribes it will have multiple follow up sessions to see if the drug works and whether side effects are causing any issues. here in AUS the doctor will do bloods and warn you about what vitamins/foods you should avoid/not avoid while on it to avoid side effects and the like.

If you want real medical advice go to a DOCTOR. Medical advice off the internet is never good.

EDIT:
it really irks me when people make medical related posts and people just spew crap without knowing anything at all about it, and then people potentially taking that advice/opinion on board. Like the guy who typed

" Imo using acutane or w/e doesnt solve anything, it just masks the outward symptoms of the problem" and posted crap about eating foods that cause acne, without really having any idea what he's on about

What makes acne so frustrating is that there are so many different skins types. What's best is to keep trying new solutions and to always keep experimenting.

What worked for me:
While I haven't rid myself completely of acne (I swear if it clears up on my face I MUST break out on my back) things that have worked best for me are:

-clean pillow case (this one feels more universal, can't hurt. It's not like clean cases promote acne lol)
-drinking lots of water and avoiding particular foods (chinese in particular for me. That devastates my skin)
-multivitamins: some people disagree as to whether these make a difference, they appeared to for me
-getting enough sleep. I had very clear skin for a few months until I started watching GSL live. Until it became my normal sleep schedule, waking up at 5am really seemed to affect my skin.

Do not take one persons experience as any proof of potential side effects. Chances are his back pain was caused by somethign else anyways.

EDIT:
just wanna put it out there that people really have no clue on the internet about medical advice. For example, the amoutn of people i've heard say that accutane causes depression, when statistically its in fact the opposite.

yeah, I know, asking professionals is always the best option. I told my cousin that, and he has asked plenty of professionals (I think like 10?). Nothing seems to be working for him...and hes getting desperate and I feel bad for him is all. I know a lot of people on this forum are not as informative as professionals; however, my cousin knows tons of information about acne and any information that I give him will be taken in intelligently. I made this post merely as a way to gather information and give potential ideas, which my cousin can consider using.

Im not 100% on the american medical system, but see a dermatologist, only professional you need to see.

In australia you would see your general doctor (equivalent to the family doctor i think in us?) and they would refer you to a derm if you didnt clear up on AB's

EDIT: as a matter of interest, are we talking male/female?

Yeah, I agree. Thats the part thats pain in the ass though.... if you can not find something that works...it must be pretty depressing. I mean, this guys tried AT LEAST 100 different things. Be it natural, OTC, or some type of oral medicine. He has considered going on accutane several times, but always gets put off by the side effects. He said he has really oily skin. Lots of sebum production. Any idea what product can help contain that? Perhaps if he can get rid of reallly oily skin, it will reduce lesions?

Alot of pseudo-science revolves around this issue.

There are 2 main kinds of acne, normal and cystic.

Cystic acne cannot be 'cured' through products like proactiv or treatment such as that.

The only solution for cystic acne (which is more commonly known as scarring) is through drugs such as roacutane.

Never touch your face with your hand and sleep with a new towel on your pillow every night.

I've never had much acne but it helped for the little bit I got in the area between my cheeks and my ears.

If he is feeling dry, he can get a moisterizer in the supermarket, get a good one tough. Also while he is in the supermarket he can get a cream that cleans up his skin. To be used 4 times a day if he has that much acne.

Everyone's skin is a little different, but these rules helped me
- Cut sugar out. No soda, no candy, no chocolate etc
- Drink a lot of water. 6-7 glasses a day
- Exercise.
- Sunlight - google vitamin d/e effects for skin.
- Clean face and get a moisturizer.
- You are what you eat.

I second this.
Especially hormonal treatments, they can work very well if you have a serious and capable dermatologist, but should only be used under medical control. Things can turn bad if you don't know how to manage it.

Simple advice that you can do by yourself has already been given: don't touch your face, don't pick it, wash it twice a day with a special washing cream for young acneic skins, change your pillow case as often as possible. The rest, I'm not sure.

Oh, and too much sun is definitely good in the short term (dries your skin), but only makes things worse in the long term. Use a 50+ sunscreen on your face.

But first of all, find a good dermatologist.
Le long pour l'un pour l'autre est court (le mot-à-mot du mot "amour").
