Basically, ever since I can remember (EG, 4 years old/probably before that.) every once and a while I will hear a ringing sound in my ears that resembles a sine wave. It may happen less than once a month, or it may happen more than once a day. There is no describable pattern to when they occur, and I take efforts to make sure I don't put my ears in a situation where the decibel level causes any kind of pain (E.G. I don't blast my music, the loudest I ever set it is when I am mowing the lawn and vacuuming. For music use noise canceling in-ear earbuds that block at least 15-20 dB of noise, or if I'm not listening to music I wear actual musicians' earplugs (Linky to the earplugs I wear). I even wore earplugs at MLG Anaheim and freaking Disneyland rides (lol) because it the sound levels were uncomfortably high).

The actual ringing usually lasts like, 2-5 seconds, 10 seconds max. Might have even been ~30 seconds a few times. Basically I've never experienced things like the hour+ long ringing people experience the day after they've been to a concert. The tone is usually between 800-2000 Hz., but it's been up there at over 9000 Hz before (I'm funneh amirite??)

Basically, I am asking if anyone else experiences the above anomaly that I do, and/or if I should be concerned about it or not. I am trying to get a full ear exam, but even in Canada, land of the free (healthcare), shit takes forever to get anything done. My next doctor's appointment is on Tuesday so hopefully stuff will happen then (Beyond shining that useless light inside your ear to see if light comes out the other end). I do have ADD (Not ADHD), and apparently people with that often have "sensitive ears", in quotations because I have no clue as to what that means. Do they just get pissed off at loud sounds b/c of the ADD itself or do their ears actually get damaged more easily?

Also I can't really seem to hear anything past 15k hertz, I've tried speakers, several sets of earbuds and a headset rated to go up to 26k hz, but there's jack all past 15k, dead on the money. Considering I'm under 18, protect my hearing, and to my knowledge haven't been in any traumatic jet plane engine or M16 related abuse as a child, I should be able to hear well up to 22k Hz, at least 20k at my age. Again, I haven't had an ear exam yet, but w/e v_v

(PS sorry for the excessive number of brackets in this post ())

I get random weird short duration ringing occasionally as well, but it doesn't seem to be linked to loud noise. If anything, I think it occurs more often when its silent.

your ears ringing is a very normal thing. And over time your hearing will decrease. (i.e. those ringtones with a super high pitch where some people / teachers can't hear it, or a TV that's on but muted some people hear it ringing, florescent lights, etc...)

Nothing to worry about imo. I once heard a rumor/tale that when you hear a ringing then that means it's the last time you'll ever hear that tone again as it's part of your ear dying. Then I found it that was complete bullshit.

Bro. I get a type of ringing I'm not sure if it's like you. Basically I can hear my heartbeat in my ear. Do you have these? Put your finger on the vein on your temple next time you hear stuff and if it beats to the right beat then it's your heartbeat pumping blood.

I believe the "sensitive ears" thing is that you may be more prone to distraction due to your ears just because of... well, whatever it is that your ADD* does to/for you.

However, ringing in your ears is pretty common and can occur after any prolonged duration of a constant sound, extremely loud noises, high pitch noises, suddenly "hearing" silence (e.g. abruptly turning off a song), etc. So my opinion is that you're fine. I hope your doctor tells you the same.

*I don't know much about ADD itself or other related issues, but I'm quite certain about the ears. As for you not being able to hear the frequencies you "should", we'll all end up with similar hearing in a few years, and then as we continue to age. No need to worry, even if you are losing the ability to hear certain higher frequencies a little sooner than other. It's just like how some people bald faster, etc. Everyone's different.

Totally get this once in a while too, usually happens when it's dead silent. Suddenly there will just be a loud noise, that doesn't really seem to have a source, it's just there.

well one reason i have trouble sleeping sometimes is because if there isnt some music playing, or a movie/sc2 cast in the background all i hear is ringing. lol mind you ive played drums in a tiny room since i was a teenager and only in the passed few years have i used hearing protection, also worked in a saw mill since i was 13 lol, so all these things dont help obviousy. But im not deaf, and my hearing is fine actually, just some weird high pitched sounds once inna while, and if its totally quiet i hear a slight ringing, which is annoying, but its only when trying to sleep. Which i drown out with some Tastosis GSL casting lol. But GL man, hope all goes well for you.

your hearing doesn't necessarily decrease over time, until you are in your mid-40s or something like that...if it does before that then there's a problem such as with myself massive hearing loss from birth that continued to spiral down until i was 14~ from there it has remained literally on the exact line of measurement between disabled and severe hearing loss (have to wear hearing aids even though i tend not to [they're quite uncomfortable at times]) for the normal person without any severe trauma to the ears (ala an accident or hearing louder noises [such as music] for an extended period of time) then the ears should not lose hearing until around the mid 40s

My ears ring all the time ever since i can remember, like it does when you are around a loud noise for a while then walk away, except it never goes away. It really sucks cuz i've never heard what complete silence sounds like just a constant ringing ALL THE TIME. I've gotten used to it tho. I've never been diagnosed, but i'm pretty sure i have tinnitus.

It's relatively common for people to get ringing noises once in awhile. They can commonly occur when it's very quiet, especially after a loud noise (eg, being alone in a car after a door has been slammed shut). I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it started becoming more frequent and/or started impacting you in your other activities, such as unable to concentrate or can't sleep.

You could try lipoflavonoid, which is an over the counter supplement rumored to improve inner ear circulation. There are some who claim it can cause cancer though, so do your own research before deciding.

Another reason for your ringing/buzzing could be herpes. The herpes virus, which an estimated 8 out of 10 adults have, lies dormant in sensory nerve cells and has been proposed as a cause of ear ringing or even full blown tinnitus.

Overall, you might have some success eating an anti-inflammatory diet (google "Paleo Diet") and/or taking supplements like Omega 3's, which are also anti-inflammatory.

Hey i have the same thing happen to me. When its silent that noise is always kinda there. But i am talking about like losing hearing kind of ring. It happens to me like once a week, usually in my left ear only, occasionally it will happen to my right one tho. It has never happened both ears at the same time.

I have no idea what it is tho. It lasts a couple seconds and is gone. Just a riiiinnng gone everything normal again. I just tend to ignore it although Ive been wanting to go see or ask a doctor about it. Maybe next time i go into the doctor (which usually only happens if i cut part of my finger off at work or something lol.)

Oh and the ring happens at any time. Could be at work, could be where its loud, quiet, doesn't matter. Its super random. Glad to know i am not the only one tho =o i just assume its from going to rock shows or something and my ear got damaged over the years.

I have never tested my hearing with pitches or anything tho, would be interesting to find out how my hearing actually is. hm...
It rained today inside my head...

I have the exact same thing you describe OP. I've had it as long as I can remember and I always assumed it was tininitus. My hearing is actually very good (I'm not as sensitive to loud noise as you are though) but occasionally I'll have that ringing you describe, mostly at night.

I'm not too concerned, it's never lasted long enough to be a nuisance but I've never talked to a doctor about it so who knows.

Is it the tinnitus localized to one ear or present in both?
Have you tried hearing tests with a bone conduction device?

go see an audiologist as soon as you can dude.

could be tinnitus, could be a bunch of other things as well. Could be a sign of hearing damage.

i had this for a while too and it was because I had years worth of damage to the nerve because of bad ear infections, and then they realized I also had an issue with one of the three bones in there too, which had to be replaced

Worth getting checked out just so you know if you have an issue that may get worse down the road

1) It isn't a 'constant' noise, though if I am wearing earplugs at night AND cover my head with pillows etc. I swear I can hear something, though that might just be internal noises, so I am not sure if it is still called tinnitus. It can be in either ear though, no pattern, though the tone has always only been in 1 ear at a time.

2) I don't really no what that is, but if it is what I think it is, no I haven't stuck any chicken legs up my ear recently D:

3) Planning on it.

umm... no thanks, no i don't have herpes (If you read OP you would know I had this since I was 4, my parents don't have STDs either (Or at least didn't, lets not go into that tho >.>), and I take multivits lol O;
